What is
Jump Canada?
Jump Canada is the committee of Equine Canada
that is responsible for all hunter, hunter equitation and
jumper activities in Canada from the grass roots to the
international level. Jump Canada is governed by a
board of directors, the majority of whom are elected
by the stakeholders in the sport. There are 20 board
members and 14 sub-committees that are responsible
for the operation of Jump Canada with the support of
manager, Karen Hendry-Ouellette, who works from the
Equine Canada offices in Ottawa. A complete outline of
the Jump Canada structure and responsibilities can be
found on our website www.jumpcanada.ca.
CORE OBJECTIVES
1.
To develop, build and grow Canada’s hunter/
jumper community at all levels.
2.
To improve the effectiveness of communications to
internal and external audiences.
3.
To promote rider and horse development at an
international level.
4.
To administer and manage the Jump Canada
organization.
5.
To improve and increase funding and sponsorship
base.
Since its inauguration in 1998, Jump Canada has
initiated important national programs, fostered grass
roots development within the provinces, fielded
successful teams at World Championships, Pan
American Games and Olympic Games, and maintained
financial responsibility.
Owners are particularly important to the success of
show jumping in Canada. Through their support of
the athletes and ownership of their horses, owners
make it possible for Canada to field competitive teams
in international events. Their support is paramount
to Canada’s success and, each year, Jump Canada
presents the Owner of the Year Award in recognition of
their invaluable contribution to the sport.
Jump Canada has created a number of other programs
and awards in order to recognize contributions to the
sport and to provide support for participants. The
following are the Jump Canada programs developed
to date. The complete criteria for each program can be
found on the Jump Canada website.

Erynn Ballard
Birthplace:
Oakville, Ontario
Birthdate:
September 13, 1980
Hometown:
Hillsburgh, Ontario
Erynn began riding at the age of five with her parents, David and Sandi Ballard, and entered the show ring one year
later. Equally talented in hunter, jumper and equitation, Erynn became only the second Canadian to win the prestigious
ASPCA Maclay National Championship at the 1998 National Horse Show at Madison Square Gardens. The following
year, she and Leacock captured the Individual Gold Medal at the 1999 North American Young Riders’ Championship.
Stepping up to the Grand Prix ranks, Erynn made her Nations’ Cup debut at the 2006 Spruce Meadows “Masters”
tournament, helping Canada to achieve victory for the first time in the event’s history, and was named Equine Canada’s
“Equestrian of the Year” for 2006. In March of 2007, she and Robin Van Roosendael delivered two clear rounds to help
Canada win the Nations’ Cup competition in Wellington, Florida.
Erynn is the professional trainer and coach for her family’s business, Looking
Back Farm. Recognized for her ability to ride all types of horses, Erynn is
often the pilot of numerous mounts in the Young Horse classes.

Birthdate:
June 21, 1970
Hometown:
West Vancouver, BC
Gary Brewster is one of Canada’s brightest stars for the future of show jumping. Having worked his way up the ranks,
Gary is now a mainstay at the Grand Prix level, competing throughout Canada and the United States.
Gary was named to the 2006 Jump Canada Talent Squad, a means of recognizing competitors with the potential to
become future members of the Canadian Show Jumping Team. He quickly realized that potential by being named to
the 2007 Canadian Team Short List where he has remained ever since.
A successful 2007 season saw Gary place second in the $75,000 Kubota Cup Grand Prix at the Royal Manitoba Winter
Fair followed by a win in the $40,000 Kubota Cup Grand Prix at Edmonton
Northlands riding Hurricane. With Royal Viali, Gary opened the 2008 season
with a win in the $25,000 HITS Grand Prix in Tuscan, Arizona.
Gary is based at Twin Oaks Farm in Richmond, British Columbia. He and his
wife, Suzanne, an accomplished amateur rider, have one son, Henry.

Frankie Chesler-Ortiz
Birthplace:
Miami, Florida
Birthdate:
December 20, 1980
Hometown:
Orangeville, Ontario
Born in Miami, Frankie began riding at the age of four and has successfully competed in the western disciplines of barrel
racing and team penning. Her first taste of international jumping success came at the 1997 North American Young
Riders’ Championship where she captured Individual and Team Silver medals with Braveheart.
At the age of 17, partnered with Ravenna Z, Frankie was selected to represent Canada at the 1998 National Horse Show
in New York City, making her the youngest Canadian to ever ride on a Nations’ Cup team. In 2001, she participated
in a Canadian Developing Riders Tour and, in 2004, furthered her European education by spending the season based
in Holland and Belgium. It paid-off with a spot on the Wellington Nations’ Cup Team in 2005 as well as two major
Grand Prix victories in Ottawa and Collingwood. In 2007, Frankie guided Picolien Zeldenrust to three clear rounds to
place second in the €300,000 ($400,000 US) CN WorldWide Grand Prix in
Wellington, Florida.
Show jumping runs in the family – her parents, Alan and Sherry, were also show
jumping competitors, as is her husband, Juan Ortiz of Venezuela. Frankie
enjoys the support of several sponsors including Finish Line, Ariat, Bioniche
Animal Health, Vettec, CWD, Running Fox, Exhibitor Lab, and Comfort Tech.

Mac Cone
Birthplace:
Memphis, Tennessee
Birthdate:
August 23, 1952
Hometown:
King, Ontario
A steady performer at the international level for more than 30 years, Mac Cone is the only athlete to have competed
on both the United States and Canadian Equestrian Teams. Following early beginnings that saw him train under the
legendary Bert de Nemethy and win Nations’ Cup events for the United States, the Memphis native moved north in 1979
to marry Canadian Brenley Carpenter.
Riding the Hannoverian stallion, Elute, Mac was the highest-placed Canadian rider at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. It
was a feat he would repeat at the 2002 World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain, riding Cocu. His current grand prix
string consists of Melinda, his Team Silver Medal partner at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, and Ole,
the winner of the $60,000 Kilkenny Cup Grand Prix at the highly-competitive
2008 Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida.
In addition to his skills as a rider, Mac is deservedly recognized for his
coaching abilities having trained 1986 World Champion Gail Greenough. He
counts 2003 Pan American Games contender, Mark Samuel, and 2002 World
Equestrian Games teammate, Melissa Brown among his current clients at
Southern Ways Stable.

Mario Deslauriers
Birthplace:
Venise en Quebec, Quebec
Birthdate:
Hometown:
February 23, 1965 Bromont, Quebec
Mario began riding as a child and, in 1984 at the age of 19, became the first Canadian and the youngest rider to ever win
the World Cup Final, a record he still holds. Later that year at the Los Angeles Olympics, he was involved in a three-way
jump-off for the individual bronze medal, eventually finishing fourth with Aramis.
A two-time Canadian Show Jumping Champion, Mario has represented Canada at every major international event.
While competing at the 1999 World Cup Final, Mario was awarded his World Cup Silver Medal for competing in over 100
World Cup Qualifying competitions. He again represented Canada at the 2000 and 2001 World Cup Finals.
Mario remains an integral member of the Canadian Show Jumping Team. He helped Canada win back-to-back Nations’
Cup titles in 2006 and 2007 in Wellington, Florida, and, in September of
2006, was a member of the Canadian Team that scored its first victory in the
$350,000 BMO Nations’ Cup at Spruce Meadows, Calgary.
Mario is based at Bromont Equestrian Centre, site of the 1976 Olympic
Games equestrian competition.

Darrin Dlin
Birthplace:
Edmonton, Alberta
Birthdate:
March 2, 1970
Hometown:
Wellington, Florida
Alberta native Darrin Dlin rocketed onto the Canadian show jumping scene in 2007. With impressive results during the
winter circuit in his hometown of Wellington, Florida, Darrin made the decision to spend the summer season in Canada
contesting the 2007 Pan American Games Selection Trials.
As fate would have it, he won the first two qualifying events in the Canadian World Cup League. In July, he led the
victory gallop in the $70,000 World Cup Grand Prix Jumping du Quebec in Blainville, Quebec, and, one month later,
claimed the $100,000 Caledon Equestrian Park Grand Prix in Palgrave, ON. At the close of the Canadian World Cup
season, Darrin’s position in the standings earned him an invitation to the World Cup Final in Goteborg, Sweden, where
he made his debut riding for Canada in international competition. Even more
impressive is the fact that his horse, Catwalk, was bred in Canada.

Kim Farlinger
Birthplace:
Toronto, Ontario
Birthdate:
July 30, 1984
Hometown:
Annan, Ontario
A natural athlete, Kim Farlinger spent her youth participating in track and field and equestrian, and her natural riding
ability quickly saw her skyrocket to the top levels of the sport.
In 2003, Kim won the North American Young Riders’ Championship Junior Individual Gold Medal and made her Grand
Prix debut the next winter. Following a successful summer competing at Calgary’s famed Spruce Meadows facility,
including being invited to the prestigious CSIO Masters Tournament, she closed out the 2004 season by finishing a
close second to Ian Millar in the Canadian Show Jumping Championships.
Kim is currently competing at the Grand Prix level with two mounts, Cordoba and Bay Street. At the 2008 HITS Desert
Circuit in California, Kim and Cordoba enjoyed victory by winning the $25,000
Ariat Grand Prix and also placed second in the highly-competitive $75,000
Grand Prix.
Kim graduated with honours from high school in Owen Sound, Ontario, and
enjoys downhill skiing and music. She operates her own business, Kim

Schomberg, Ontario
One of Canada’s most talented riders, Eric Lamaze is a serious contender whenever and wherever he enters the grand
prix ring. The three-time Canadian Show Jumping Champion has represented Canada at the past four consecutive
World Equestrian Games in 1994, 1998, 2002 and most recently 2006 where he placed second during the first two days

Ian Millar
Birthplace:
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Birthdate:
January 6, 1947
Hometown:
Perth, Ontario
With eight Olympic starts as of the 2004 Athens Olympics, Ian Millar has competed in more Olympic Games than any
athlete in Canadian history, in any sport. At age 61, he is still on top of his game and hopes to make his ninth Olympic
appearance in August of 2008.
If Millar’s Olympic record is impressive for longevity, his Pan American Games record is equally so for his medal count.
He has earned nine medals in eight Pan American Games, more than any other show jumper.
In spite of his Olympic and Pan American Games records, it was the World Cup of show jumping where Millar first
broke new ground. In 1988 and ’89, he and his legendary partner, Big Ben,
became the first-ever horse and rider combination to win back-to-back World
Cup Finals.
The most decorated equestrian in Canadian history, Millar is a member of the
Order of Canada, was Ontario’s Athlete of the Year in 1989, was inducted into
the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1996, and was awarded an honourary
doctorate by the University of Guelph, Ontario in 2005.

Birthplace:
Port Hope, Ontario
Birthdate:
June 19, 1979
Hometown:
Brantford, Ontario
Andrew Hyde Moffatt had an unusual introduction to horses. When he was five years old, a girl at school brought in her
horse for show-and-tell and Hyde was hooked!
Hyde entered the grand prix ranks riding Ting Tin, a son of the well-known sire Chin Chin. Starting their Grand Prix
career together in 2004, Hyde and Ting Tin steadily improved with each outing, enjoying top ten finishes at several of the
biggest horse shows in Canada including the Capital Classic Show Jumping Tournament, the Collingwood Horse Show,
Tournament of Champions, and the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. In 2007, Hyde brought two more horses up to the
grand prix level, Denver and Kelly du Lautier. He also competes with several horses in the Young Horse Development
Series including Atlanta van de Padenborre, who was crowned the 2007
National Seven and Eight-Year-Old Champion.
In addition to his equestrian pursuits, Hyde also enjoys long distance
running.

Tamie Phillips
Birthplace:
Kamloops, British Columbia
Birthdate:
December 1, 1972
Hometown:
Strathmore, Alberta
Growing up on a ranch in Kamloops, British Columbia, Tamie Phillips started taking formal jumping lessons at the age of
nine and, after successfully showing as a teenager, turned professional on her 18th birthday. Her first taste of national
success came in the mid-90’s when she qualified for the Talent Squad Finals at Toronto’s Royal Horse Show.
In 2004, Tamie moved to Strathmore, Alberta, where she operates Caragana Show Jumpers. A fabulous 2005 season
at Spruce Meadows riding Starlet saw Tamie receive the Chrysler Leading Canadian Rider Award. In 2006, Tamie
was named a Canadian Team alternate for the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany, and, after winning the
$35,000 Kubota Cup Derby in Richmond, BC, riding Lucas, was crowned the Western Canada Kubota Cup Champion
for the second year in a row.
Horses are a way of life for Phillips and her family. Her mother, Merle Gardner, and her younger sister, Shawna Phillips, operate a horse business in
Williams Lake, British Columbia. Tamie and her mother bred both Lucas and
Starlet, promising indications of what their small breeding program is capable
of producing.

Chris Pratt
Birthplace:
Toronto, Ontario
Birthdate:
April 18, 1969
Hometown:
Belfountain, Ontario
For Chris Pratt, it all began with four goats. After spending his first ten years in the city, Chris moved to a farm north of
Toronto. There were sheep, chickens, goats - everything but horses. Tired of hearing Chris ask for a pony, his father
finally relented, trading four goats for what would become a lifelong commitment for Chris.
The first sign that Chris was destined for greatness came in 1994 when he topped the Kanatek Talent Squad and also
received a Firestone Development Scholarship. Over the past five seasons, Chris has racked up impressive victories
including back-to-back wins in the $125,000 CN Grand Prix and the $60,000 Kubota Cup Grand Prix during the Bromont
International in July of 2006. That same year, Chris made his official Nations’ Cup debut in Wellington, contributing two
clear rounds to help Canada secure victory, and represented Canada at the
2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany.
At the beginning of 2007, Chris headed to California to work with U.S.
Equestrian Team member, Richard Spooner, and has been enjoying
impressive results ever since, most notably in World Cup qualifying
competition. When not riding, Chris can often be found on the golf course.

In 2006, Elissa qualified for both the National Talent Squad Championship and the Kubota Cup National Finals at
Toronto’s Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. In 2007, she captured everyone’s attention with her consistent performances
at the grand prix level. At the beginning of August, Elissa was one of nine athletes who jumped-off for victory in the
$100,000 Caledon Equestrian Park World Cup Grand Prix during the CSI-W Caledon Summer Festival in Palgrave,
ON. Clear over the shortened jump-off course until the final fence, Elissa finished fifth among a field of Olympians and
international veterans.
Her top horse is the beautiful Taboo’s Iveena S and, under the tutelage of Robert Sharpe, the pair is maturing into toplevel competitors. Her successful 2007 season earned Elissa short listed
status with the Canadian Show Jumping Team for the first time.
Elissa holds her bachelor of science from the University of Guelph.

Ainsley Vince
Birthplace:
Oakville, Ontario
Birthdate:
August 3, 1976
Hometown:
Milton, Ontario
Following a successful junior career, Ainsley Vince was named to the Canadian Equestrian Team in 1995 after enjoying
consistent finishes in several World Cup Qualifiers riding Hocus Pocus.
Ainsley has experienced tremendous success with the veteran campaigner, Catch 22, a gelding that she purchased as a
six-year-old. The pair made their international debut riding for Canada at the 1999 Washington International Horse Show
before helping Canada win their second consecutive Bank of Montreal Nations’ Cup at Toronto’s Royal Horse Show.
One of this country’s most successful horse-rider combinations, Ainsley and Catch 22 were back-to-back Canadian
Show Jumping Champions in 2001 and 2002. Ainsley and Catch 22 have represented Canada at the annual World Cup
Final on three occasions, in 2000, 2003 and 2004. Also in 2004, Ainsley and
Catch 22 were members of the winning Canadian Team in the Nations’ Cup
in Wellington, Florida.
Ainsley operates her own training and sales business, Linden Ridge Limited,
on her parents’ farm in Milton, Ontario. Her two younger sisters, Courtney
and Sydney, are also successful show jumping competitors.
