Journey back through time to
a simpler era with a visit to
Downtown Northville's 23rd
annual Victorian Festival.
Experience the art, history,
and romance of the 1800s
amid Northville's historic
downtown district and tree-lined streets.
The festival begins with the traditional parade on Friday at 6:30pm
and continues throughout the weekend. The streets will be closed
to automobile traffic as townspeople, artists, and business owners
turn back the clock and transform themselves into a Victorian
Village complete with period costumes, storytellers, magicians,
musical entertainment and demonstrations.
Ryde Park features rides for kids and the Victorian Saloon
(sponsored by Edward Jones) offers entertainment for adults. Tethered Hot Air Balloon Rides will be available on Saturday, September 17 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Ford Field. The free rides are sponsored
by ReMax Dream Properties. (continued on page 4)

artist Richard Horvath. Mr. Horvath has worked in
mixed media for over 10 years having been a Toledo
Art Museum blacksmith student. He began making
clocks using natural and painted slate, willow
branches, and blown glass. He constructs one of a kind
grandfather clocks from steel and slate. The First Friday exhibit at Northville Gallery shouldn't be missed!

In celebration of Northville's annual Victorian
Festival, Northville Gallery will feature a selection of oil paintings depicting that period of
history in our town.
Beautiful Victorian florals
and scenes will be priced
especially for the festival. Northville Gallery is also the
home of Northville's original fairy doors, posters and
books. Visit to see a variety of painted fairy doors for
sale as well as unfinished doors for you to paint yourself. Classes are currently being offered for building
fairy tree houses - just in time for Christmas!
The First Friday Experience takes place all year long
from 6:00 - 9:00pm with artists featured at many of the
galleries.
Complimentary hors d’ oeuvres and beverages are
generally available while you browse or shop.
The First Friday Experience is not just for gallery lovers. In addition to of our art galleries, many of our
shops are also staying open - some of which will also
have a special event going on and others will simply
have their welcome mat out. The following shops and

For 27 years, Mr. Keeter
inspired young artists at
Detroit's Center for Creative Studies. He was the
kind of teacher his students recall vividly 20
years after his untimely
death in 1991. The kind
of teacher no one ever forgets. In his own right, Mr.
Keeter was a talented artist who specialized in the
human figure. As an instructor, he strove to open students' vision to their paths as artists.
Two decades after his death, the Northville Art House
is honored to present an exhibition that delves into the
unique relationship between a gifted teacher and artist
and his students. Including works from Mr. Keeter himself and a number of his students, the show is intended as both a tribute to Mr. Keeter's legacy and a
broader reflection on the invaluable, yet often underappreciated lifetime impact of great teachers. The
show is curated by
Jeff Cancelosi.

Artist Statement: I have concentrated on representing Michigan's seasons, portraying the extreme icy
cold winters and the serene, hopeful spring. Some of
my work is more representational than others. Most
often I portray the feeling of a season, rather than the
appearance. However, in all of my work, I continue to
use my techniques of layering and building of texture.
Each layer must have 24 hours to set and dry. Therefore, each piece takes weeks before completion.

Each Sunday afternoon the historic buildings are open
for public viewing. Costumed docents are on hand to
inform visitors about the buildings, their contents, and
about Northville’s past. Mill Race Village is open to all,
and there is no admission charge. The grounds are
open daily from sunrise to sunset; the buildings are
open on Sunday afternoons from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.

Eclipse Baseball Club
Mill Race Village will come alive with the sights and
smells of the early 1900’s as horseless carriages arrive on Friday, September 9th.The South Michigan
Motorists Chapter of the Horseless Carriage Club of
America and the Snapper's Brass & Gas Touring Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America will
be at Mill Race Village with all pre-1090 vehicles.

The Northville Eclipse Base Ball Club is a "vintage"
ball club. Club members play (and behave) according
to 1860s baseball rules and manners, recreating an

Victorian Festival Activities at Mill Race Village

A variety of activities will take place at Mill Race Village during Victorian Festival. Museum Buildings will
be open from noon to 4pm. Delicious food will be
served in the Northville Council of PTAs food tent.
There is also a Fairy tea party, a used book sale,
children’s games and races and a show by Ming the
Magnificent, a illusionist.

Designer Show House Last Chance Tour includes
dessert, coffee and tea for $10.00 per person. Tickets
available at the door on the day of the event.
Typically homes featured are widely different in
architecture and interior design, span three centuries
of construction and reflect how families have adapted
to 21st century living in a community with a Victorian
village at its heart.
One of the favorite events of the day is the Grand
Finale of the Victorian Festival, the annual Duck Race.
Join the excitement as the ducks are released at Mill
Race Village Dam and race their way to the Griswold
Street Bridge. The first five and the very last duck over
the finish line win excellent prizes.
The home tour is a signature fund-raising event of
AAUW which directs its support to advance education
in the local, national and international community. For

not by Brooms, but by Bewitching Artwork at
Ghoultide Gathering
A collective of artists has been assembled for the 5th
annual art show known as Ghoultide Gathering - A
Halloween Artists Spectacular. Juried artists work to
create spooktacular collections to charm and sell at
this Halloween-only show. Using both traditional and
non-traditional mediums, their visions of Halloween
offer a spellbinding take on the season that has
fascinated many since childhood.

tour is always a hit! This year boasts a Show House
decorated by designers as an addition to the event.
The Show House featured is located at 800 Griswold
and will be hosted by Dr. William Demray, DDS.
