This year is the 80th anniversary
of the beautiful and tranquil
Blue Pool
The Blue Pool Teahouse first opened
to the public in June 1935 and
this year we have had a wonderful
time celebrating this great 80th
Anniversary year.
Over the summer months we
welcomed various Bands and Choirs
to sing on Sunday afternoons.
We finished this amazing Season with
our Halloween Event for Half Term,
Once again many families came and
enjoyed the Autumn colours and took
part in our many trails looking for
Squirrels, Fairy Doors, Skeletons and
Pumpkins.
We opened for Easter and welcomed
many old and new Season Tickets
holders, as well as many families.
May started with a Bank Holiday and
one towards the end followed by our
Scarecrow Festival.
We hope you will come and see us
sometime next year, we shall open in
time for Easter.
On the Sunday 7th June our fantastic
Anniversary Celebration over 2,000
visitors come to enjoy this unique
Attraction.

It’s raining
Divas!
Whatever the weather, TV weather presenter Carol
Kirkwood is always smiling because she knows just what
to wear. A fan of British-made Diva dresses, Carol is often
spotted wearing these stylish, body-con dresses which
are now available at Fab Frocks of Westbourne.
Designed to flatter, these dresses have
sleeves to cover your arms elegantly,
clever ruching across the tummy, are
so easy to wear and don’t need ironing!
A real plus when you need to be up and
looking glam by 6am every morning!
With its sharp, figure-flattering
silhouettes, it’s no wonder Diva is all the
rage amongst TV celebrities including
Susanna Reid, Nigella Lawson, Louise
Minchin, Carol Vordeman, Ruth Langsford
and Amanda Redman. So why not
unleash the Diva in you!

Quality technicians you can trust
The Independent Service Centre
for Mercedes | BMW | MINI | Smart
Your vehicle deserves the Star Treatment
Call us on 01202 694758 or visit star-tech.co.uk
Ask the Expert, Q&A with Matt Peacock, MD of Star Tech, Poole
Q: Why would you only use genuine parts and oils?
A: We use genuine Mercedes and BMW parts on all the
cars we work on because we can be certain that they will
fit right the first time. Not only that but you get a 2 year
parts and labour warranty (European wide) with any part.
Q: I bought the car from the main dealer, and is still
under the manufacturer warranty. Do I have to use
them for the servicing?
Q: What’s the benefit of using an independent service
provider such as Star Tech for my servicing?
A: No, as of 2002 the European Union changed the law to
make the market more even for car drivers. They said that
the owners could take their car where ever they wanted
to get it serviced provided the garage uses genuine parts
and works to the manufacturers service schedule. If all of
this is adhered to then you can keep your warranty.
A: Our focus is to offer competitively priced services from
experienced technicians with a superior knowledge of
Mercedes Benz, BMW, MINI and Smart motor cars. In
addition to expert technicians, Star Tech also boasts a
purpose fitted service centre that is equipped with the
latest specialist servicing and repair tools.

caring for your pet
Caring for your pet
Recognising illness
in old age pets
Just as we can have
more health issues
as we get older, so
too can our pets and
often they are similar
ailments. So what
should we be looking
out for? PDSA Vet
Vicki Larkham-Jones
explains.
• Lack of energy or an unusual increase in
activity
• Finding it difficult to walk or stand up
• Loss of appetite
• Drinking or going to the toilet more
than usual
• Toileting in unusual places
• Bad breath or one with an unusual scent
• Lumps or swellings
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Seeming disorientated or bumping in to
things
• Becoming restless or making unusual
noises at night
It’s important to remember that many pets
live a perfectly healthy older life, and even if
your pet is ill, the earlier it’s diagnosed the
more treatment options you will have.
Looking after our pets as they reach their
elder years is just as important as giving them
a good start in life. It’s quite normal for our
old age pets (OAPs!) to start to slow down but
still live a happy and healthy life, but it’s also
important to keep an eye out for signs that
may indicate a serious illness.
As with humans, arthritis, dementia and
certain cancers are all more prevalent in older
pets. A quick check-up at the vet every six
months will help detect any illnesses at an
early stage, meaning there’s a better chance of
successful treatment or management of many
conditions.
It goes without saying though that if you’re
worried about your pet’s health at anytime you
should take to them to see your vet as soon as
possible. Here are a few signs to keep an eye
out for which may indicate an illness:
• Weight loss or gain – such as more
prominent bones, or a swelling of the
abdomen.

Pet Care Q&A
Your questions
answered
the only suitable medication, then it’s a good
idea to ask for a demonstration about how to
give your cat the medicine or ask if it’s ok
to administer in a bit of food, for example.
Remember that vets and nurses give medicines
to pets every day but we don’t expect owners
to do this without some tuition, so we regularly
demonstrate this to owners. Have a chat with
your vet, explain what you’re finding hard to do
and I am sure they will be able to help you.

I have just bought a female hamster
and have had her for 48 hours. She
has not drank once but she has been
to the loo. What should I do to
encourage her to drink?
Natasha
I’ve just adopted a three-year-old
cockatiel, and have been reading up
on how to care for her. But I’m not
sure about grooming her – do I need
to give her regular baths? If so can I
use normal soap? Rita
A) Try not to worry too much as it’s possible
that you may not have seen your hamster
drink as they’re nocturnal, so she may have
had a little drink overnight while you’ve been
sleeping. Due to their smaller size, they also
tend to drink so little at a time that you may not
notice the amount of water in her bottle going
down. Make sure the water bottle is always
clean and that you provide her with fresh water
every day. You could also offer her some fresh
fruit and vegetables, such as apple, carrot,
broccoli, pear and cabbage – this will increase
her water intake and give her a bit of variety.
If you are still worried that she’s not drinking
enough or if she seems at all unwell in herself,
it would be worth taking her along to see your
vet for a check up.
A) Cockatiels benefit from having the
opportunity to bathe regularly to keep their
feathers in good condition, although birds do
have a natural way of doing this through their
preening gland. The readiness of birds to
bathe often varies according to their personality
but one option is a type of bath which attaches
near to the cage opening. It must be big
enough for a cockatiel and the water should be
changed after she has used it. These are good
because they let your cockatiel bathe when she
chooses to, in her own time, and they don’t
get the surrounding area wet, which can be
unhygienic and cause health problems. Another
option would be for you to spray her with tepid
water from a plant spray. It is important that
her living environment doesn’t become damp
through this, so do this outside the cage if
possible, and clean the sprayer after use. If
she obviously doesn’t like it then don’t continue
with this. Never use soap as this can be harmful
to the feathers and skin. The chance to bathe
should be offered daily to most caged birds.
My cat was prescribed a liquid
medicine for breathing difficulties,
but we’re finding it nearly
impossible to administer. Is
there any other way he can get
the medication he needs without
the added stress of us having to
literally push them down his throat?
Christopher
If you have a pet question
you’d like to ask Vicki, email
[email protected]
A) The best thing to do is to discuss this
with your vet to see if they can suggest other
medicines that might help your cat. If this is

men’s health
Men’s Health
Movember
The campaign has steadily grown from there and
now supports many aspects of mens health with
several partnerships and more and more countries
now taking part. So much so that since 2003, over
four million people have participated, 770 men’s
health projects have been funded, 12 countries take
part and an incredible £346 million has been raised!
By Danielle Jordan
The ladies have Race for Life
supporting Breast Cancer Awareness,
and in recent years, November has
become the month for the lads to
raise money for men’s health. Dubbed
‘Movember,’ the idea is that on
October 31st, men shave for the last
time for the next 30 days, and grow
and groom a moustache in return for
sponsorship money.
And you don’t have to be a man to get involved,
the official website encourages ‘Mo Sista’s’ to hold
fundraising events, support fellow ‘Mo Bros’ and
generally assist the cause. Whole communities can
take part, sports teams and any individuals can join
in. In fact, with the huge importance on exercise
and having an active healthy lifestyle, within the
Movember movement there is a sub section known
simply as ‘MOVE,’ encouraging people to ‘MOVE
for men’s health,’ and all men, women and children
are encouraged to be part of it.
In fact under official Movember rules, each ‘Mo
Bro,’ is supposed to use the power of the moustache
to create conversations about men’s health and
must conduct themselves like a true gentleman. As
the popularity of Movember has grown, more and
more employers who may normally have a stricter
facial hair policy are supporting the movement,
even setting up work teams and or company events
in support of the cause such is the increase in
participation.
Movember may originally have been known for
being primarily hugely popular with University age
lads who enjoy competing with their friends over
who can grow the most impressive moustache, but
the foundation goes way beyond that. In only the
eleven years since its conception, it has changed
the face of men’s health and made massive steps
towards raising awareness and helping to fund
projects to improve the lives of many. Whether it
be prostate cancer, testicular cancer or mental
health, the companies vision is to
have an everlasting impact on the
face of men’s health, and with the
obvious growth in popularity of
the campaign, not only have they
made an enormous difference and
definitely achieved their objective,
they have surpassed it. So this
November, whether you choose
to become a Mo Bro or a Mo
Sista, or just come across someone
raising money for the cause,
think about your husband, your
father, your son or your brother,
consider how invaluable they are
to you, and give what you can to
a fantastic cause.
For more information, you can
go to the official UK website
But where did such an influential movement start?
In Australia in 2003 by just two friends Travis
Garone and Luke Slattery, who got 30 other people
to join them, in that first year,
the logo was designed and
rules were set out (rules
that are still the same
11 years on), one of the
original 30 participants,
Adam Gerone registered
the company and set
up a website with Justin
Coghlan running the
Queensland campaign the
following year, and in 2004
Spain and the UK joined
in the event with all costs
being covered by the four
founders. All donations went
to the PCFA (Prostate Cancer
Foundation of Australia) and
it was the single largest cheque
they had ever received! They
were the first official beneficiary’s
of the now unstoppable Movember!

POOLE HARBOUR INFORMATION & CONTACT NUMBERS
The International Regulations for the Prevention
of Collisions at Sea apply to all vessels – including
those racing.
Take particular care with boats under sail,
especially when they are racing.
Be visible and make your intentions clear. You may
think you know what you doing and where you are
going, but put yourself in the shoes of the Master of
the cross channel ferry – does he know what your
intentions are?
You may see a large ship at all times, but if you
disappear from the view of the Master of a ship you
are too close.
Do not underestimate the speed of other ships.
If your boat is slow you might not be able to take
effective action to keep clear if you find yourself on
a collision course. If in doubt, take avoiding action
and take it early.
Do not anchor or drift in any navigational channel
or create an obstruction within the channels.
Do not secure to , or obscure any navigational
marks, buoy, beacon or stake.
Mariners are advised that large inbound vessels
will tend to be on the port hand side of the channel
between the Harbour Entrance and North Haven
Point to avoid Chapman’s Peak.
navigation hints
See Admiralty Chart 2611 or Imray Chart Y23
The approach to Poole
If approaching from the Solent, the entrance is
identifiable from the high cliffs of Anvil Point.
When closer, the rocks of Old Harry (Handfast
Point) are clearly visible. The Swash Channel is
clearly marked.
When leaving for, or approaching from the west,
beware of the race off Handfast Point on the ebb
tide.
The Harbour is accessible at all states of the tide
and is only dangerous in very strong S and SE
winds, particularly on the ebb tide.
The entrance channel ‘The Swash’ passes between
the Training Bank, on the western side, and Hook
Sands to the east. Be careful of the Chain Ferry,
just at the entrance, as the ebb can run at 3 to 4
knots.
Navigational Safety Guidance
Avoid sailing in the main navigational channels
where possible, especially in poor visibility. Be
aware of the effect of passing close to a large vessel.
The ship’s hydro-dynamic displacement can pull
the water from under you without notice.
Give right of way to large vessels which are limited
in their manoeuvring space. Remember they may
have less room than is immediately apparent.
IF THERE’S AN ACCIDENT
If you are involved in a marine incident or accident,
no matter how minor, within Poole Harbour and its
approach channels, you must report the incident to
the Harbour Authority as soon as possible.
Standard report forums are available in the
Harbour Office but an initial report should be
made to Poole Harbour Control or to the Harbour
Masters patrol launch, call sign ‘VIGILANT’ on
VHF Channel 14 or 16.
Report forms are available to download from the
PHC website: www.phc.co.uk
If you have to proceed within the channel keep to
the starboard (right hand) side.
Be Alert – keep a sharp look out for vessels
surveying, dredging and laying buoys or moorings.
Look around you – especially astern.
Watch you wash – even when you are proceeding
within the speed limit, you may be creating a
wash. Slow down whenever you see other vessel
activity which could be affected, for example craft
embarking passengers or youngsters in canoes.
