AGING AND MEMORY SEMINAR PRESENTED BY

Join Aging and Memory - Researchers from the Wayne State
University Institute of Gerontology will be presenting on cognitive
changes that occur during normal and abnormal aging, with a
particular emphasis on memory. This presentation will address
neurobiological and cognitive changes in older adulthood as well
as memory promotion strategies. Those interested individuals
with memory concerns can also learn about opportunities to

The clinic will operate at the Civic Park Senior Center on the 2nd and 4th Friday of every
month. The purpose of our “Ask the Lawyer” Legal Clinics is to offer free, limited legal advice to residents of the State of Michigan on a first-come, first-served-basis. Legal volunteers cannot file court papers for you or appear in court on your behalf. They do not offer
legal representation. Their manner of advocacy is direct assistance, legal advice and counsel, research and scholarship, education, media outreach, policy development and public
programming. Attorneys may charge up to $10.00 for performing each notarial act. Please
arrive at least 30 minutes before 3:00pm.

Walk through a real-life truck plant, view one of the world’s largest "living roofs," and see a

trucks filled with jaw-dropping special effects, to a short documentary about the factory’s

SENIOR CENTER TRANSPORTATION BUS (S.C.A.N.)
The Senior Center Transportation Buses provide curb-to-curb rides within the City limit
on a donation basis. Rides are available to local shopping districts, grocery stores,
Westland Mall (1st & 3rd Thursday 10:30am) and to the Senior Center. Service hours for
the Senior Center are Monday thru Friday.
1. Senior Center. Buses leave from the Senior Center at 8:30am and we ask that you be
ready for pick up by 8:30am. Buses return home 1:00pm Monday–Friday and 3:00pm
Mondays & Tuesdays & Special Event Days.
2. Grocery Shopping Monday-Friday (Locations Vary) depending if you are North or South
of 5 Mile Road. Call (734) 466-2555 for shopping locations. Driver will inform riders the
amount of time allowed at the store and pickup location at designated time.
3. Westland Mall Shopping takes place on the 1st (minimum of 4 riders) & 3rd
Thursdays of every month. Bus departs for pickup at 10:30am so please be ready for
pickup at that time. Once at the Mall the driver will inform you the amount of time you
will be allowed and the pickup location (Usually where you are dropped off).

Monday-Friday 9:30am-2:30pm
Monday-Friday the Civic Park Senior Center offers a shuttle to Doctors’ Offices within the
City of Livonia and up to one mile outside the City Limits. Please contact (734) 466-2700
to make your advance reservation. There is no charge for this service (Donations Gratefully Accepted). This service fills up quickly so please call as soon as you know the date
and time of your appointment. All Vehicles Are Wheelchair Equipped. Age 60 and over.
Reservations accepted up to 90 days in advance. Maximum of two (2) rides per week. You
must make your appointment so that you are able to get home before/no later than
2:30pm. No reservations will be accepted from Nursing Homes or Assisted Living facilities. We Do Not Transport Medical Emergencies!

AARP TaxAide Livonia is looking for volunteers!
Every year AARP provides free tax preparation at the Civic Park Senior Center for Livonia
seniors and others February through April. We are looking for new volunteers to become
tax counselors or to help with other aspects of the program. You should know how to use
a computer and the internet, but training would be provided to learn the tax software and
tax law. Two-day training classes in early-December and in mid-January are being
scheduled now. Volunteers would be expected to work about 1 day/
week during the tax season. If you are interested and want to know

The clinic operates at Livonia’s Civic Park Senior Center on the 2nd & 4th
Fridays between 1:30-3:00pm. The clinic will focus on legal issues affecting
the elderly.
Each party is asked to sign in and complete the registration form. All
appointments are on a first come, first served basis. Each appointment may
have a predetermined time limit. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before
the closure time of 3:00pm or you will not be seen.
We are a Michigan not-for-profit legal corporation dedicated to providing
limited free legal services to members of the general public regarding
Michigan & Federal Law.
The purpose of Ask the Lawyer Legal Clinics is to offer free, limited legal
advice to residents of the State of Michigan. Legal volunteers cannot file
court papers on your behalf. We do not offer legal representation. Our
manner of advocacy is direct assistance, legal advice and counsel, research
and scholarship, education, media outreach, policy development and
public programming.
Attorneys may charge up to $10.00 for performing each notarial act.
Our mission is to provide friendly, quality legal assistance from qualified lawyers to residents of
the State of Michigan in a clinical setting which will help each client to achieve a resolution to the
matter they brought to the clinic.

New Performing Arts Center highlight of summer bond projects
The new Performing Arts Center at Franklin High School
Hoover Elementary School’s renovated office
Livonia Public Schools is proud to share an update
on the bond issue projects that are occurring in our
schools!
“We are grateful to the community for supporting
the funding for these much-needed improvements
to our buildings.”
Summer 2016 Phase III renovation projects took
place at Grant, Hoover and Randolph elementary
schools, Johnson Upper Elementary, Holmes
Middle School, as well as Franklin and Stevenson
high schools.
The renovations have transformed the learning
environment for students, with improved lighting,
ventilation, classroom technology, furniture,
mechanical upgrades and security enhancements,
to name a few of the improvements.
The renovations are made possible through the
bond issue that was approved by voters in 2013.
School exteriors, entrances, offices, classrooms,
restrooms, hallways, gymnasiums, cafeterias,
computer labs, music rooms, and the addition of a
state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center at Franklin
High School highlight the work that was completed
during the summer months.
“We are extremely proud of these beautiful updates
at 17 of our schools, so far,” said Stacy Jenkins,
administrator of district communications for LPS.
The community will be invited to a grand opening
celebration of the new Performing Arts Center at
Franklin later this fall. Watch for details.

Students and families at Livonia Public Schools’
Niji-Iro Japanese Immersion Elementary
School are really “big” into playing games and
having fun.
Instead of hosting the typical Muffins with
Moms or Donuts with Dads events, the school’s
PTA decided to super-size the fun by throwing
a Games with Grown-Ups event that featured
over-sized games for kids and adults to enjoy.
The games included huge versions of: Angry
Birds, checkers, dice, Frisbee, bubbles, Connect
Four, Scrabble, Jenga and croquet – all set up
on the Niji-Iro lawn.
“Many schools hold Game Nights, but, in the
spirit of trying to encourage more physical
activity, we thought, what if we made
everything super-sized?” said Rebecca Lenk,
PTA member. “Unlike other events, which
can be very labor intensive, we wanted every
single parent to just relax and play with their
families. That was a key to the success of this;
we required no volunteer effort during the
event.”
Games with Grown-Ups caught the attention of
PTO Today magazine, which recognized NijiIro Elementary in its 2016 Parent Group of the
Year contest, in the Outstanding Family Event
category. PTO Today issued a $500 check and a
certificate to the Niji-Iro PTA.
