The final decision to opt
for SkyTrain technology was
the right one, but the process
that led to that decision was
flawed.
That’s what Auditor General
John Doyle said in a report
released Thursday, which
points to a lack of cost analysis options and bloated ridership projections.
“While my audit ultimately
concluded that the SkyTrain
extension was the best option,
it did this using information
not present in the Treasury
Board submissions,” the
report stated.
The report notes business
case models developed in
2008 and 2010 did not include
enough information around
costs, benefits and risks when
comparing the three modes
contemplated: SkyTrain, light
rail or bus rapid transit.
“What we found was that
the information that went to
Treasury Board wasn’t robust
enough — it should have
gone further, and further
questions should have been
asked,” Assistant Auditor
General Russ Jones told The
NOW Thursday.
“The information was all
there. It just hadn’t been
brought together and put into
the business case for Treasury
Board to make their decision.”

It was the unexpected end of Mike Vinter’s
working days that prompted him to hatch
his art career.
More than 20 years later, that change
turned out to be a life-altering decision.
The 82-year-old Coquitlam resident, who
specializes in designing ornamental eggs,
credits his relatively newfound passion as
being responsible for saving his life.

before I was ready for it,” he said.
“For a year or so, I was brooding and
didn’t know what to do with myself. I
thought, ‘Well, I can’t continue like this,’ so
I got into [art].”
Though he wasn’t artistically inclined in
his younger years — he “hated painting”
in years past — some prompting from his
daughter led him towards an art form that is
widely practiced across central and eastern
Europe.
“I doubted that I would be interested, but
I got hooked on it,” he said. “At first it was
really amateurish.”
Vinter’s process begins with selecting an
egg — typically he opts for a chicken egg,
though he’s also used eggs from quails,
ostriches and geese.

Park subject of development fears

I
t’s considered the crown jewel of
the Tri-Cities.
Now both the city of Port Moody
and the Village of Belcarra are teaming
up in hopes of keeping the shine on
Admiralty Point in Belcarra Regional
Park.
Both municipalities have passed
motions asking the federal government to either transfer the lands to
Metro Vancouver or lease the space in
perpetuity to ensure the lands are preserved for park use.
The federal government had originally signed a 99-year lease with the
City of Vancouver back in 1912 to keep
the lands for park purposes.
The Admiralty Point lands were
then handed over to the Greater
Vancouver Regional District — now
Metro Vancouver — in 1969 for the
same purpose.
But the lease ran out in 2011, and
municipal leaders in both communities are worried the lands could be
developed.

The 75-acre parcel of land is located
at the tip of Belcarra Regional Park
along Burrard Inlet.
The land is used as a popular trail
and recreational area and also serves
as an environmental habitat.
Clay suggested it wouldn’t be worth
using the land for any type of residential or industrial development since
there are no amenities in the area and
it would need new infrastructure and
servicing.
He argued that not having a new
agreement in place opens the door to
development and speculation, and also
creates uncertainty.
On Tuesday, Port Moody passed a
motion asking Ottawa to step in, while
the Village of Belcarra passed a similar
motion on March 11.
Belcarra Mayor Ralph Drew told The
Vancouver Sun recently the waterfront

with his complaint to the

the tasks, they should be able
to stay on the job.
“I believe there is a lot
of merit in a case-by-case
option,” he said, adding there
may be some younger members who can’t keep up with
their older counterparts.
“There are people out there
at 60 that are in prime physical condition and can do the
job.”
The chief even suggested
there is a trend by departments to remove the language
around mandatory retirement
from collective agreements.
But in Port Moody, Faedo,
who will also be watching the
Chilliwack case closely, said
the age requirement hasn’t
been tested, and in many
cases firefighters are opting to
retire early.
In Port Coquitlam, Fire
Chief Nick Delmonico sees
the debate as a pension issue
for firefighters. He noted
pensions are built to give
firefighters an ability to retire
early, and considers challenging the current system a
“slippery slope” that could set
a precedent.
Delmonico also appeared
to favour letting firefighters
work past the age of 60, suggesting people at that age are
far more fit than they were at
the same age 30 years ago.
“I don’t want to make a
qualified statement based on
someone’s age or physical
ability to do a job. I believe
in the fire service, it’s more
based on the structure of their
current pension and that they
can retire early at 30 years,”
he said. “I don’t think you can
have both.”

As an avid gardener, it’s not
surprising that the majority of
Vinter’s designs reflect some
type of floral theme. Some of
his eggs also follow specific
patterns or shapes. Others are

“I try to make them as
colourful as possible,” he said.
Born in the former
Czechoslovakia, Vinter was
first exposed to the time-honoured tradition by his grandmother.
“When I was a kid growing up back in Prague, my
grandmother, who was in her
late 70s, used to send us these
coloured eggs,” he said. “They
really became a family treasure, more or less.”
Given the length of time
that had passed since then,
Vinter had all but forgot-
ten about the eggs, let alone
attempting to decorate them.
It wasn’t until the early 90s
when his daughter — a teacher in Squamish — asked him
if he was interested in helping
her decorate the eggs she was
working on.
That simple query triggered
memories that had been lost
for decades.
“At the time my daughter
showed me all of this, I finally
remembered this after 60
years, that these were treasures that we had when I was a
kid,” he said.
Vinter dove headfirst into
the artistic process, and was
selling his eggs at Place des
Arts the year after he began
learning the craft.
Since that time, he’s sold
eggs typically on a seasonal
basis — at Easter and around
Christmas — through the
Maillardville-based arts centre
and at his Burquitlam home.
“I get so much pleasure out
of this. My time just goes so
fast when I’m making them.
I go down into the basement
and start on it, and my wife
doesn’t see me for three

Police warn mother
after child left in car

A Coquitlam woman who left her two-yearold child unattended in her vehicle won’t
face any criminal charges, according to local
Mounties.
Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung told The
NOW Thursday the department fielded a complaint at about 5 p.m. on Tuesday regarding
a child left unattended in a vehicle in the 100
block of Schoolhouse Street.
Though the vehicle was gone by the time
Mounties got there, the complainant recorded
the vehicle’s licence plate number and gave it
to the attending officers.
“We were able to locate the mom and the
child later on,” Chung said. “We spoke with
her and she understands that what she did was
not OK and that it could have turned out badly
very easily. What if someone was to jump into
her car to steal her vehicle?”
Chung did not disclose the name of the
woman, nor her age, but confirmed that she is
a Coquitlam resident.
He said the child was left in the vehicle for
“more than a few minutes,” though no injuries
were reported.
“This incident could be a wake-up call for
other parents and caregivers that leaving your
children unsupervised in a vehicle even for a
brief moment is not OK,” he said.
“Even on a cooler day, with the sun in the
sky, the car could have been heated up to 20 or
30 C in a matter of a few minutes.”

The next Coquitlam council meeting could be one of
Selina Robinson’s last.

request a four-week unpaid
leave of absence at the April
8 meeting. If granted, the
April 15 meeting will be her
last before the provincial writ
drops one day later.
“Once the writ is dropped I
want to put all my efforts into
the campaign,” she said in a
press release.

as the NDP candidate in the
riding last year after outgoing
MLA Diane Thorne announced
her impending retirement.
Last week, Steve Kim was
acclaimed as the Liberal contender in the riding.
“Since I was nominated,
I’ve put my private practice on
hold so I can fulfill my duties
as a city councillor and do
the door-knocking I want to
do as a provincial candidate,”
she said.
“But I know the four weeks
of the campaign will be very
busy and I want to be able to
devote all my energy to the
campaign.”
Robinson’s request
comes two weeks after fellow Coquitlam Coun. Linda
Reimer asked for the same
type of leave. Reimer is the
Liberal candidate in Port
Moody-Coquitlam, and is pitted against incumbent MLA
and former Port Moody mayor
Joe Trasolini.
Meanwhile, Port Coquitlam
MLA Mike Farnworth received
yet another vote of confidence

as the NDP candidate in that
riding.

Outage no help to Earth Hour
At approximately 7 a.m. on Sunday, March 24, the
power went out in our area, the south side of Port
Coquitlam, Cameron Avenue and Pitt River Road
location.
It was out until just past 12:30 p.m. It was
reported that 1,300 homes were affected.
We later were advised that BC Hydro
reported cable problems.
In all the 32 years we have lived in
Port Coquitlam, we have never been

actually, was BC Hydro’s problem?
Wouldn’t the significant loss of electricity consumption over those five-and-a-half hours to 1,300
homes (7,150 hours) in Port Coquitlam help make
up for the previous night’s shortfall in the Earth
Hour number of 1.9 per cent?
Now that Port Coquitlam has attained the ranking
of Canada’s 33rd best place to live, we would hope
that our Earth Hour numbers help keep us in the
running.
Earth Hour, between 8 and 9 p.m. on March 23,
was reported as seeing just a modest reduction in
energy use, according to BC Hydro.
On Saturday evening, the three communities reduced their electricity use by
just 1.9 per cent each during Earth Hour
— the same as Burnaby and just slightly
better than Surrey at 1.8 per cent.

Next stop: a bland
station somewhere
A
nother step in the long-and-winding
route towards the Evergreen Line was
crossed with Saturday’s unveiling of
station names.
Although politicians who oversee the
spending of taxpayers’ money can smile
with ease, someone should have ventured a little deeper when the roll call of
Burquitlam, Inlet Centre and Lafarge LakeDouglas stations were presented like an
Oscar-winning nominee.
None of the names offend or appear
wonky — although the uncomfortable
amalgamate Lafarge Lake-Douglas skirts
the line. Four carry the bland ‘Centre’ or
‘Central’ vernacular. How can everything be
in the ‘centre?’
It adds up to bland language that fails to
highlight our community.
How strange and somewhat unique
would it have been if those who selected
the names had used an ounce of creativity
to make their choices?
Where is the link to local history, or a TriCities touchstone? Inlet Centre has a generic
weight that would sink a canoe.
An obvious option would have been
Newport, which reflects the new Port
Moody downtown site. Or even better, the
name of Ioco — a reflection of the route to
the old town site — would have added a
historic touch.
It’s true that most stops and stations
along the Millennium and Expo lines are
simple street and neighbourhood tags. For
some, there is no better reference point
than what is the most local street crossing.
But would it have really been terrible to
have shown some flare of creativity and to
have given the Evergreen Line a sense of
something outside the standard box?
School districts may be leaders of innovation and creativity when it comes to naming
new buildings. The Evergreen think tank
should have taken a longer look before

In the beginning, it was an idea
hatched amongst friends — let’s
form a soccer team.
The friendly, jovial camaraderie
of the game, which most had played
at the higher minor levels, was the
driving force. But when push comes
to shove, it’s winning that is the
glue that binds the Port Moody SC
Blues men’s soccer team.
“I said from the get-go that while
we want to have fun, we’re in it
to win,” said playing coach Blake
Ceron. “Everyone was on board.”
The Blues head into this weekend’s Bradner Cup final against the
Chilliwack Rapids in Surrey aiming
to add another win to the list.
In their second year together, the
Fraser Valley Soccer League squad
has emerged as steely challengers to
any title put before them.
“Last year it was just a few of getting together deciding to make a
soccer team,” recalled Ceron. “We
started in Division 4, we won our
league and the President’s Cup and
now we’re in looking at a shot at the
Bradner and Provincials.”
In most recent play, Port Moody
edged out the Div. 1 Langley Young
Guns 3-2, while they blanked the
Fraser Valley 3-0 three weeks ago.
Their toughest test came in the
quarterfinals, when after 25 minutes they trailed the men’s premier
North Delta squad 3-0. Port Moody
got one back before the half but
faced an uphill rally — and did it.
“We came out flying in the second half and scored to make it a
one-goal game, then tied it up,”
recalled Ceron, who is assisted by
Devin Kirk. “To win it in the shootout was very sweet.”
Finishing second in the Div.
2 loop this season, with a 11-2-5
record, assured the squad a berth to
the provincials. But the Bradner has
a lure of its own, too, noted Ceron.
“I personally think it’s huge. The
Bradner is one of the oldest competitive cups in Canada, so there’s quite
a bit of prestige on the line.”
With a roster stocked with 21- to
24-year-olds facing older rivals, the
club’s accomplishments aren’t lost
on the youthful coach.
“In our league there are definitely
some teams led by salty veterans,
but I think our young flare gives us
that edge, that fire.”

Reds’ returnees embrace new roles

W
hen Kyle Williams draws up his pitching
rotation, he notes that there is no dominant
ace returning and no pitcher who carries a
Verlandian presence to the mound against opposing
batters. At least not yet, anyways.
As the B.C. Premier Baseball League gets ready for
the seasonal charm of an umpire’s call to “Play Ball,”
the Reds aim to present a balanced approach in their
charge up the circuit’s ranks.
“Our pitching is a strength, but not like in the
past where we were top-heavy,” said Williams.
“Whereas in previous seasons we had an ace or
a streak stopper right out of the gate — a [Jeff]
Heidema, a [Matt] Trimble and a [David] Otterman
— this year we have seven strong pitchers who’d be
top-four on any other team.”
And while the club may not boast that ace today,
returning righthander Curtis Taylor says he’s ready
for the job and the responsibility.
“I have high expectations of myself,” said Taylor.
“This year I want to be the PBL’s top pitcher and
break the Reds’ record for best [earned run average].
I know the goals sound lofty but I like to set them
high.”
That’s the kind of talk a manager likes to hear as
the season kicks off — with the opening pitch coming April 6 in Whalley.
Williams’ rotation includes returnees Brandon
Becking and Austin MacDonald and junior grads
Jonathan Keltie and Ryan Mose.
For Taylor, there is some evidence to back up his
higher expectations. With three consistent pitches in
his arsenal, the PoCo native is working on adding a
slider to the mix.
“This past season I’ve gained [about] seven miles
per hour on my fastball. I’m starting to throw harder
and I’m hitting my spots and that’s the key,” said
Taylor.
This year’s roster has some obvious strengths and
some certain question marks, but Willliams is confident that as the pieces come together, the club will
be in the mix come playoff time.
“I’m not sure exactly what we have this year,” the
recently married school teacher said. “On paper we
look good, our outfield matches up with anyone’s,
our pitching is something it wasn’t last year — deep.
“If we have some concerns it’s for our infield,
where we have an entirely new look.”
If there’s a player that will personify this year’s
potential it’s the sweet swing and gutsy play of centrefielder Max Hollingworth.
The six-foot-one outfielder lit up opposition pitchers in Arizona, sending a couple of bombs far.
“He just mashed the ball [in Arizona],” said
Williams. “He had two triples, two home runs, two
doubles — he was a one-man wrecking crew.”
Hollingworth posted a .242 batting average during
the regular season, driving in 19 runs. In the playoffs
he was a completely different hitter, going five-fornine including a home run over five games. He has
since added an element of leadership that has been a
pleasure to watch, said the fourth-year Reds coach.

not just what he’s done on the field. Max has become
like another hitting coach for us, adopting a couple
of our younger hitters and helping them out,” said
Williams.
The graduation of infielders Darren Honeysett,
Taylor Lawrence and Tyler Yorko opened spots for
competition — and a competition is what there is.
McDonald will get a lot of playing time at shortstop when he isn’t pitching, while both Becking and
junior Kevin Heidema will also line up in the infield
when not on the mound.
It’s the new reality with the infield, where dual
roles means a lot of lineup changes game to game.
The club spent part of spring break in Arizona at a
tournament, where they finished with a 6-1 record.
They got to play a few American and eastern Canada
teams, but most of their opponents were fellow
BCPBL squads escaping the seasonal wet weather.
The benefit of such a journey isn’t just the games
but in settling together as a team, and Williams said
the trip was a success in that regards. Now to translate that on home turf.
“If it’s anything like our eight days in Arizona,
[team chemistry] should be great,” he said. “The
boys bonded, they worked well and behaved. I
thought we’d have some who’d look at it as a holiday
but they didn’t. It was very business-like.”
Last year’s barely better than mediocre 26-22 regular season showing would later evolve into a Final
Four showing, where they finished third overall.
Coquitlam doesn’t play at a home game until
April 18, when Abbotsford comes to town.

Express coaching void sparks rumour

He hasn’t accepted the job nor has he
applied for it.
However, Todd Harkins admitted that
he was looking for a coaching position in
junior hockey.
A Vancouver radio station on Tuesday
stated in tweet messages that Harkins was
the leading candidate for the head coaching position with the Coquitlam Express.
The club relieved head coach and general
manager Jon Calvano of the post last week
after three years on the job.
“I’ve not ever applied for the job, and
I have not accepted it,” Harkins told The
NOW. “[But] I’m not getting any younger,
so coaching junior hockey is something I’d
like to do.”
Harkins, who stepped down as hockey
director of the North Shore Winter Club’s
hockey program last week, said he is
preparing his resume and is looking for a
junior coaching position.
“I’m definitely interested in pursuing a
job coaching junior hockey,” he said. “[The
North Shore Winter Club] has been a great
organization, but after a 12-year run at
the North Shore I’m looking to test myself
elsewhere.”
The 44-year-old said he plans to circulate his resume in the coming days.

The Coquitlam Express hope to celebrate a win in the
coaching department, as it fields applications for the
recently opened head coach position.
Aquasonics in synch
The B.C. Aquasonics synchronized swim club posted some
impressive marks at last week’s Synchro Canada national qualifier championships in Calgary.
Five of the six teams advanced the national championships,
with the Canadian Open championships slated for late April.
The senior national stream team, which includes Port
Moody’s Breanna Riou-Green, collected silver in the Senior
FINA free team routine. Anmore’s Alexia Iten, Coquitlam’s Rene
Bell and Riou-Green were part of the senior combo squad that
finished sixth in the combo final.
In the 13-15 national stream team, the squad — which
includes Coquitlam’s Lani-Marie Carbonel and Anmore’s Kalista
Iten — placed eighth in team routine and 10th overall.
“We had an extremely successful week at the Qualifier in
Calgary,” says B.C. Aquasonics head coach Susan Kemper. “Our
competition was fierce but our athletes handled it with great
determination and as a result we achieved many of the goals we
set for ourselves.”

first day with a polished even-
par 72 that included four birdies and parring 10 other holes
to take a two-shot lead over
Gudz. Lee stood three strokes
back of the lead.
On Tuesday, Lee shot 72
around a single birdie and 16
holes of par, while Ewart posted a three-over 75 and Gudz
shot par to slip into first.
In the girls competition,
Avril Li finished tied for ninth
with a two-round showing of
163 (80-83).
Gleneagle senior take table title
Adrian Lee picked up his second senior B.C. single boys tabel
tennis title to lead a strong showing by the Gleneagle Talons at
the provincial championships last week.
Lee, an honours student who won as a Grade 10 and finished
second last year, reclaimed his title in his graduation year.
Collecting third place in boys team competition was the trio
of You Pen, Kasuki Sakui and Lee.
Gleneagle, which had 12 athletes competing in the event, was
also the host school. Drawing nearly 20 volunteers to help make
the event a success was teacher and coach Ali Tootian.

Vancouver Northwest Giants major midget
program from 2010-12 in when the club
won back-to-back major midget titles. He
also served with the Express as director of
player personnel and a scout in 2009 when
the franchise was located in Burnaby.
He took over the Giants head coaching
position from Calvano in 2010, when the
young skip was hired by Coquitlam.
A native of Cleveland, OH., Harkins
career in hockey saw him play 48 games in
the NHL with Calgary and Hartford.
Darcy Rota, president of the Express,
told The NOW last week the organization
had a short list of candidates and would
name a successor within a month.

TRAFFIC OPERATIONS COORDINATOR
Jack Cewe Ltd. is looking for an experienced Traffic Operations
Coordinator to join our construction division team. The successful
candidate will work closely with our construction Foreman and
Superintendents and will report directly to our Health & Safety Manager.
Applicant must possess a valid BC Traffic Control Person certificate and a
minimum of 2 years Lane Tech and TCP experience in road construction
and a valid class 5 driver’s license. Knowledge of and experience in
Rapid Plan Software is essential.
Your duties will include but not be limited to: the submittal of road closure
permits and traffic management plans as well as ensuring their approval
in a timely manner and kept up to date and tracked. Good computer
skills and proficiency in MS Office is required. Planning, organizing,
strong communications and interpersonal skills and demonstrated
ability to perform effectively in a team environment are essential to the
success of this position.
