Dear friends and colleagues,
In our December 2008 issue, I first wrote about the signs of a crisis in our industry.
Unfortunately, this is our last issue of 2009 and we are still experiencing the
difficult financial consequences of a weak global economy.
Contrary to the optimistic attitude of some of the
experts, we do not see any light at the end of the
tunnel.......or at least not as yet.
Our main concern has always been to make sure
that our seamen feel secure and confident that
they will be employed by Marlow, whatever the
case may be. Therefore it makes me happy to be
able to confirm that despite this unprecedented
shipping crisis, the total number of seamen
employed on ships under our Crew Management
has remained stable.
Since we are almost at the year’s end, it is the appropriate time for
reflection on the past year but also time to set new targets and goals for the year to
come. We of course, wish and hope for a speedy recovery of the world wide
economy in general and shipping markets in particular but besides this, our
main target for 2010 is related to the further improvement of the safety of our
seamen working on board. This is an ambitious aim and we are determined to
implement all those procedures and take all necessary measures towards this
direction.
Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your
continued support which helps all of us to master these strenuous and
challenging times. Also I would like to wish all of you on land and on board a Merry
Christmas and a Happy 2010.

Activities On Board
M/V INDUSTRIAL CENTURY
Every week, the crew is given the
opportunity to vote for the crew of the
month. The picture shown below was
taken at the bridge where the crew cast
their votes after the drill and safety

competition to select the “Crew of the
Month” where all the crew is monitored
on their daily performance on board, how
they apply SOLAS, keeping themselves
safe during cargo operations, cargo
oil transfer, showing respect to their
officers and also regarding safety and
environmental awareness.
Each week the result is published and the
winner is announced as the “Crew of the
Week” and this procedure continues till
the end of the month. The winner is
chosen at the end of each month, by the
crew casting their votes as well as the
officers. In the photo below we can see

Unfortunately, one of the hidden A/Bs,
eager for some action, jumped up quickly
and poured a bucket of sea water on the
Captain’s head. The effect was that the
cadets were petrified and it was easy for
the other hidden A/B to water them. All
finished very quickly and in good humor.
The speech was not necessary anymore!
"Crossing the Line" ceremony on
M/V CSA LONGUEN
On the 5th September 2009 we had
another baptism ceremony which took
place on board the M/V CSAV Longuen.
It was the first time that Deck Boy
Gregorio Celo Jr. was crossing the
Equator. As is the tradition he was well
and truly “baptized” by his shipmates to
mark the occasion and received a
Certificate from Capt. Duro Bagovic to
always remember the day he became
“Man of the Sea”.
Who digs a hole in the ground for
somebody else, might fall first in it!

Rescue Operation of M/V ‘DORIAN’
In the previous issue of our Newsletter,
we wrote about the successful rescue
operation of all who were on board the
passenger vessel M/V “DORIAN”.
Appreciating the crew that took part in
the rescue operation Messrs Komrowski
Befrachtungskontor KG. awarded such
crew with appropriate medals. Some of
the crew received their medals from the
Capt. Vadym Albul presenting the medal to
M/Man Aquino Esmeraldo.

Marine Story
In the 70’s a young British officer, at his
first international voyage, reached
Gibraltar. The vessel was under repairs
for about a month and the young man fell
in love with the place. He wanted to
remain there forever and because he had
no other background, other than the sea
he thought that it would be good if he
would find a job as a pilot in the area.
He wrote a letter of application towards
the Gibraltar Harbour Master, but due to
his lack of experience and short
curriculum, he wrote in the letter about
his family, that he is freshly married, and
that his wife recently delivered a baby boy.
In his way, the man was trying to express
that he is a family man, and he is ready for
long commitments. He attached to the
letter, a photo with his wife with their
baby son in her arms and himself, as
evidence. Then he sent his application to
the Gibraltar Harbour Master.
Years passed and no reply was received.
As his sea career and his experience,
knowledge and skills developed, it is easy
to understand that step-by-step the hero
of my story became a Master. Anytime,
the vessel under his command was
passing a European Point, the Captain
could not hide the smile, remembering his
youthful ambitions.
In the 90’s, after twenty years since his job
application, he received a letter from
Gibraltar. He was asked if he is still
interested about a pilot job in the area. He
could not believe that was real, but in the
90’s it was much easier to contact by
phone the Gibraltar’s office and to clarify
that it is not a joke. They offered him the
job of his dreams !
A simple check of his large sea service
and following a test, he became a
Gibraltar Pilot.
His only question was “why did you pick
me ?”. The reply was:
“Dear Captain, in the last year, two of our
pilots retired. We had a vacancy and
checking the folder with applications, we
found out that you are the only one who
applied in the last 20 years. So we were
ready to check if you also qualify for our
open position. Congratulations, you got
the job!”
While listening the story, one could not
stop himself from asking the pilot if he
ever had doubts, in the very beginning, if
the job offer was for himself, or for his
son, now a 20 year old young man. The
pilot told him that he had this thought for
a second, but his son was not following
him in a sea career, but computer industry.
Lesson to be learnt (lesson that he
learnt!): the continuously improving of
knowledge and the growing experience
should be doubled by patience, for
achieving our youth age dreams. Or, in
other words, you cannot get a “10
years of service” reward watch after
one contract!

Farewell
Retirement
On the 15th October 2009, Capt. Bernd
Port of Rotterdam for piloting his vessel
all by himself.
Voigt who has served with Marlow
Navigation and Reederei Juengerhans for
more than a quarter of a century brought
the M/V “DANA HOLLANDIA” into
Rotterdam port for the last time after
which he retired from the sea.

He may perhaps not qualify for the
Guinness Book of records but it is quite
an accomplishment from his part and
Capt. Voigt receiving his watch as a reward for his
long sea service with Marlow
deserves our admiration.
On this occasion our colleagues at
Marlow Rotterdam presented Capt. Voigt
with a farewell present on behalf of
Marlow Navigation Cyprus and Marlow
Navigation Rotterdam for his long and
loyal service. He was rewarded with a
watch and also with a beautiful painting
of the skyline of Rotterdam.
Capt. Voigt will best be remembered for a
flawless 14 years’ calling weekly at the

Father Christmas
Father Christmas has two addresses, Edinburgh and the North Pole.
Letters addressed to “TOYLAND” or “SNOWLAND” go to
Edinburgh, but letters addressed to “THE NORTH POLE” have
to be sent there beacause actually there is such a place.
Christmas Day
December 25th was not celebrated as a birthday of Christ
until the year AD 440.
Christmas crackers were invented by Thomas Smith. He
had imported some French novelties to sell as Christmas
gifts, but these were not popular until he wrapped them
up and added a snapper.
Christmas Food
Christmas Pudding was first made as a kind of soup with
raisins and wine in it. Christmas Pudding originates from an
old, Celtic dish known as “Frumenty”.
Christmas Decorations
Electric tree lights were first used just 3 years after Thomas Edison has
his first mass public demonstration of electric lights back in 1879.
Thomas Edison’s assistant, Edward Johnson, came up with the idea of
electric lights for Christmas trees in 1882.
In 1895 Ralph Morris, an American telephonist, invented the string of electric
Christmas lights similar to the ones we use today. The actual strings of lights had already been manufactured for use in telephone switchboards. Morris looked at the tiny
bulbs and had the idea of using them on his tree.
Christmas Carols
St Francis of Assisi introduced Christmas Carols to
formal church services. The word comes from the ancient Greek
“choros” which means “dancing in a circle”, and from the Old French
word carole, meaning “a song to accompany dancing.”
The first instrument on which the carol “Silent Night” was played
was a guitar.
