Continuing the Police Theme, this time with a Real Car!!. According to Cars Guide,
Tricky Dicky (Johnson) has “tweaked” this GT-F to a mere 600 Kilowatts!!! The
October 2 article indicates that this “Weapon” joins two other Hot Sedans in the NSW
line up. The two Falcon GTs and one HSV GTS are used to target hoons in New
South Wales.

Presidential Ponderings Well folks November is upon us already. We had a good turnout at the All Ford Day cruise with a new
destination this year to enable everyone to check out the new venue that will be used for the All Ford Day
Show next year. Not sure on the numbers, but we sold 300 sausage sizzle in a couple of hours and could
have sold quite a few more. Well done to Alen & Lisa for again bringing the club trailer and manning/
womaning the B.B.Q. and big thank you to the ladies selling the food. Not a huge turnout of club members
but the ones that did show up enjoyed themselves. An especially big thank-you to Mark and Jeanne
Thompson who travelled all the way from Port Hedland to Perth(1600km) with their XB GT just to attend the
run now that’s commitment. They also drove from Queensland to Port Hedland earlier this year when they
bought the car good to see another member not scared to clock up the miles in their car.
The Croatian chef and his better half cranking out the sausages again. Who let that fat man in the
background play with sharp implements?
Planning for the trip across to the GT Nationals has been finalised with all motels for the trip across now
booked, with 12 cars travelling so an extra 8 days of partying for those of us who are driving both ways.
Gary has again jumped in the driving seat to put the magazine together. It’s not the first time Gary has done
this so thank you again Gary. The club wouldn’t be what it is today if it wasn’t for members like Gary and a
few others continually giving up their time for the club and mentoring newbies like myself.
Keep those photos, stories, jokes, what’s hidden in your shed etc. coming in so we’ve got something
besides adverts to read in the magazine.

Regards Rob E ditorial Oh Crap!!!, been collared again!!! Technology is proving too much for Cliff. He tells me Telstra
are going to take 3 weeks to connect him up to the world. He only means of communication with
the outside world is via old world technologies, i.e. actually going and talking face to face with
someone or standing on one leg, on top of his mailbox, holding his left arm at a 45 degree angle
towards the moon. This gives him adequate signal to use a mobile phone for SMS purposes.
You will notice a theme to this months “funnies” in honour of Cliff’s woes with Telstra.
As for the cover photos to refer to this car as “tweaked”, as they do in Cars Guide, is a bit of under
understatement. Going from 351 kilowatts to 600 is a significant change in performance. For the

All my research suggests the story is on the level. I think N.S.W. Police have too much spare
cash outlaying over $300K on 3 cars! The other GT on their fleet, only 400 kilowatts, is build No.
150 of the R-Spec cars to commemorate 150 Years of the Police Force.
Last month I inserted a couple of happy snaps as parking tips for Falcon GT owners. This month I
decided I would look for some photos on how to drive, so did a search for “Falcon GT Burnout”
and found these interesting snaps with a heading “Trains can do Burnouts too!”.
The fact that these images were linked with a search for Falcon GT got me wondering if there was
a link between these and our President..
According to the story apparently there was a comms breakdown between 3 locos pulling a large
load. 2 Locos applied the brakes while the 3rd powered on!!!
The article on the 9 Inch Diff is something I found on the web and have done the best I can to
improve it, and remove a lot of the dribble about American Cars and tried to limit the discussion to
specs of the diffs.

Successful All Ford Day Cruise
The All Ford Day held a successful cruise on Sunday 2 November with approximately 400 classic
Ford motor vehicles attending.
The cars started from 3 locations ie Belmont Forum, Cockburn Central and Pinjarra with all 3
groups arriving at the new location at the Kingsway Football Club at about 12 noon.
Once assembled at Kingsway Oval, many spectators viewed the cars in nice sunny weather and
chatted to 2 of our main charities being Manna Inc. and Rosco McGlashan the Aussie Invader.
Manna Inc. even had on display the Ford transit van that was donated to them by the All Ford Day
earlier in the year. At 2pm formal announcements were made including giveaways, supporting
charities and the show 'n shine event also to be held at this new location in November 2015. The
All Ford Day is utilising a new location as Bassendean Oval limited the Show 'n Shine event to
some 600 cars. Please visit our website at afd.asn.au or our Facebook page for further details

Finally, the club itself ran a successful sausage sizzle where approximately $1,000 was raised for
the club. Thank you to all club members who assisted on the day either on behalf of the Falcon
GT Club or the All Ford Day.

Business Arising Request from Roy Lane re 404 Concession Roy Lane has requested to put 5 of his pre 76 GT’s onto concession code 404. It was noted that
although Roy doesn’t attend meetings, he is very supportive of the club and the AFD and has
contributed to the club in many ways. One of the cars is actually a 71 Fairlane
Committee discussed – stumbling block may be how the cars are currently registered. If they are
registered in a company name, then wont be able to put them on 404 concession. Rob to follow up
licensing status of the vehicles with Roy prior to committee decision being made.
Postage Costs to Metro Members Due to ever increasing postage costs, Gary has suggested that we start saying to ALL metro area
members that they need to collect Welcome Pack, Magazines, Membership Cards etc from the
Club during a Sunday Meeting, if not they pay postage. – suggested $20 per year for magazine,
$10 for membership welcome pack, $2 for Membership Card. No Charge applicable to regional
Members.
Committee discussed and came to view that this was fair, and that Metro Members should pay for
postage if they choose not to attend Monthly meetings to collect items.
Email from Warren Postuma(?) re: award for his car. The club received an email from Warren Postuma noting that he was disappointed that he never
received a club award for the restoration of his GT, and was there a chance the club could send
him one. He noted that his restored car was debuted at the Tambellup Show in 2009. Warren also
noted that he is not renewing his club membership, and is therefore no longer a member of the
club.
Extensive discussion about the request occurred. It was pointed out in discussions, that to the best
of the clubs knowledge, no before / after photos of the car were ever submitted to the club (as per
the club rules for nominating to receive an award).
The committee came to the consensus not to present an award to Warren for his car, primarily on
the basis that a) he is no longer a member of the club and b) club requirements for submitting
before/after photos of the car were not met.
Committee also noted that if Warren had continued his membership, and was also able to provide
the club with before / after photo’s of the car (as per club award requirements), then the club would
be able to present an award to Warren as part of this years awards at the AGM.

up/ become sparodic over the last few weeks. Rob to follow up with the Nationals committee
and ensure appropriate people in the club are included on the mailing list.

CMC Delegates Report:
AHMH - still in turmoil – looking for new person to perform delegate’s role
Concession 404 – DoT business plan is now complete, but not yet distributed or
implemented. Waiting on updates to DoT TRELLIS System before can implement.
Have been some changes in relation to Test + Tune – now limited to 30Km max radius from
storage location of vehicle. This has caused concern amongst member clubs. CMC have raised
concerns with DoT but DoT are standing firm on rules. Noted that can do test & tune further than
30km, but will need to be recorded in club meeting minutes. Gary noted that this requirement has
been part of the GT Club Concession regs for a while now, so shouldn’t cause too many issues.
Questions were asked from the floor re: penalties if caught in breach of rules. If deemed to have
broken rules, then owner/driver will be deemed to be driving an unlicensed vehicle – whatever the
standard penalty for this offence will then apply.
DoT had noted that similar limits (re test & tune) existed in other states – some are as low as
15km, others up to 45km, so the 30Km limit set for WA was deemed to be fair.
New 404 Concession applications will require a statutory declaration to be completed prior to the
vehicle being accepted for concession under new rules – existing 404 concession cars should be
OK.
Alen queried the current club guidelines for clarification. Current club rules state 404 concession
can be used for Sanctioned club events and Test + Tune. Frequency for test and tune is not
defined. Gary noted that the end result once the new system is implemented is that should provide
more clarity around what the rules are, and re-enforces that the onus is on the vehicle owner to
ensure they are doing the right thing. As always, recommended to always keep a copy of the club
calendar in the glove box!
All Ford Day: No significant update. Meeting locations will be announced at the next club meeting.
Suggestion was made that we should perhaps look at getting club trailer / bbq to the destination
for a sausage sizzle – consensus from the floor was to take the trailer / bbq and do a sausage
sizzle.
General Business GT Nationals Show of hands requested for those planning on driving to the Nationals – a number of members
are planning on driving. Rob suggested a list of points to be aware of be put together and
distributed to those driving.
Alen suggested a detour to the NT on the way to visit the unlimited section of the highway J
Jan – volunteered to come up with a list of spare parts that should be carried within the group
driving. Suggestion that each person driving supplies a couple of parts on the list, so that everyone
is not doubling up
Rooms – See Rob after the meeting if you have a query about, or need a room at the nationals.
Club Trailer / BBQ Alen P suggested its about time the club trailer be cleaned out again, and any gear we no longer
use / need be removed / thrown out. One example of gear no longer required is the angled
aluminium display poles – these apparently cant be used anymore, as most rules state that poles
need to be vertical (not angled).
Discussion was also held regarding replacing the BBQ.
General consensus was that the BBQ should be replaced, and the trailer cleaned out.
XB Falcon Calendar Wayne is seeking anyone interested in helping sponsor ($150) the making of a Calendar featuring
XB Falcons – proceeds to support Breast Cancer research.

Phone Story As Told to Will by His friend, 'Shaky', in the Pub
Shaky rushes in and announces loudly, 'I tell you, women drivers are a hazard to
traffic. Driving to work this morning on the freeway, I looked over to my right and there
was this woman in a BMW doing at least 110 kph with her face up next to her rear
view mirror putting on her mascara.
I looked away for a couple seconds and then the next thing I knew was she was
careering all over my lane.
It scared me so badly that I dropped my electric shaver in my coffee, and it spilled all
over my mobile 'phone.'
Fast Phone Service
Ian Bell, a lorry driver, who had never owned a cell-phone, was a frequent user of the
pay telephone at Weybridge Café, in Brooklands Road, and was greatly
inconvenienced when the 'phone broke down.
He made repeated requests for it to be repaired but sadly the telephone company only
made promises.
After several days, Ian, decided to contact the phone company again and told them
that there was no longer any hurry to repair the box. He added that the 'phone was
now working fine, concluding with 'except that all money was being returned to callers
upon completion of each call.'
A repairman arrived within the hour.
Guy's Funniest Phone Joke
The telephone rang in the stately home of Lord Armstrong in North Yorkshire, England and his butler
answered the call.
'It's me. Please go to my wife's bedroom and tell her that I'll be home late from the club.'
I'm sorry, Milord, her ladyship is already asleep.'
'Then wake her and tell her, while I hold the 'phone,' the caller demanded.
'Yes, Sir,' the butler replied.
The butler returned and said, 'My Lord, her ladyship's door was locked, and when I knocked, a man's voice
told me to go hell.'
The caller then ordered gruffly, 'Damn them! Get a rifle from my collection, break down the door, and shoot
them both.'
'Yes, Sir,' the butler responded.
A few minutes later, the butler returned to the 'phone and reported, 'My Lord, I tried my
best. I killed your wife, but as I was about to shoot the man, he jumped through the
window and into the garden, and ran away.'
The confused caller then said, 'Eh, what garden? There's no garden next to my
bedroom window.'
'In that case, Sir, I am afraid you dialled a wrong number. Good day.'

http://www.nafgtc.asn.au. All vehicles entered into the GT Nationals must be submitted for inspection, entrant number processing, prejudging
and photography on the nominated scrutineering day(s).

Ford 9 Inch Differentials
The most popular rear end around is no doubt the Ford 9 inch
unit, it is used by restorers, street rodders and racers alike,
regardless of what brand of car the axle is going in. Many
custom made axle housings for the GM boys utilize the 9 inch
Ford, even though they hate to admit it. Ford used the axle from
around the 1957 model year right up until the early 1980’s in
cars and trucks. It was not the only axle used, but was by far one
of the best. Variations by Ford exist in the size of the outer axle
bearings in the housings and carriers both, as well as with the
spline count on the axle shafts. Generally most cars received the
small axle bearings and 28 spline axle shafts. Exceptions to this
were the ultra Hi performance Boss 302’s, Boss 429’s, 427’s,
428 CJ/SCJ and the 429 cars which received the 31 spline
carriers and axle shafts. Some of the heavier cars like the
Galaxies, later Tbirds and mid 70's Torinos also received the larger wheel bearing housings.
How to Identify some typical Ford Centres
Let's start with the 9"
First off, the 9” is a removable carrier type rear end, it shares this design in common with it’s baby
brother the 8”, while the 6 ¾”, 7 ¼’, 7.7” , 8.8” and Dana rears also used in Fords are integral carrier
types. Both GM and Mopar also had earlier removable carrier type rear ends, they are no where near
abundant as the Ford. Removable carrier means these are front loading differentials, they have no
cover / inspection plate on backside-the 8.8's etc. are considered rear loaders. When a gear ratio
change is desired, a entire carrier assembly (previously assembled) can quickly be installed by
simply pulling the axles and drive shafts, then undoing the ten centre retaining nuts.
Quick ways to identify a 9” visually:
From rear of car look for a large centre hump in middle
of backside centre section (post 66 models), in general
a round appearance, it is a 9”.See photo above.
From front side look at the bottom two centre retaining
nuts, if a socket cannot access them to remove, only a
wrench, then it is a 9” See photo below.
THE N Case vs WAR Case
"Standard or WAR cases, were cast in gray cast iron which has a grain structure that does not have
the best shear strength characteristics. The N stands for nodular iron, which is made by adding
magnesium to molten iron. What this does is change the grain structure from flakes to nodules much stronger and less likely to fail under shear load." - contributed by Paul Bartus.

Other standard pinion supports encountered: WAT B2(on a WAR case),C0AW-A,C5AW-4668A,C6AW-4668-A,C7AW-C(guarded), D2AW-A (guarded) and a D2SW-4668-C(marked with the
4668).The D2SW-C seems to be the most common encountered through 1979 on the C7AW-E
cases I have viewed.
Daytona Supports
Photo left shows the D2OW-C hooded Daytona pinion
support which may have been the last Ford production
Daytona support from what I have seen.
Daytona pinion supports are found in conjunction with N
cases, they have the same size outer bearing as the
standards supports, but the inner bearing is much
larger, and the inner webbing much stronger. Visually
on the outside look for a flat surface with no raised
areas around the mounting holes (this is true for the
non-guarded/hooded supports only). Photo below
shows a standard support on left and a D2OW-4668-C
Daytona support on right with their respective bearings.
The D2OW-4668-C is the only Daytona support that I
have seen to have the guard/hood cast in. Inner bearing
number for Daytona support (D2OW-C) is HM89443,
with a HM89410 race. Aftermarket supports of equal or
greater strength (larger bearing sizes) are available.
Earlier Ford Daytona pinion supports: C5AW-4668-C,
D10W-4668-A .
Housing Types and Sizes
Shown left is the typical 1967 and up 9" (lower) and pre1967 8" housing (upper).Note no fill plug on back of the
67 and up housing, this is true for the 67 and up 8 inch
housings too. Earlier housings, like the 65-66 Mustang
8" pictured have the fill plug in the back, this is true for
the earlier 9" as well
One of the ways many people spot a 9" rear end in the
car is by looking for the hump in the centre of housing,
this is not always the best way, as 9" housings made
prior to sometime in 1966 do not have the this large
centre protrusion. The one shown above is out of a 63
Galaxie, note its roundish appearance, two dimples and
fill plug in housing back.
Here is the housing style familiar to most, note the large
centre protrusion or simply the "hump" in the middle.
Housing also has the two dimples, but note lack of fill
plug. This housing is out of an early Bronco.
The little brother to the 9" housing is the 8" housing,
note its more oval appearance when compared to the
above two 9" housings. This one is out of a 65-66
Mustang, note the two dimples and fill plug.
Housings and Bearings, etc.
This is a new section with some recently obtained specific information I have gathered on the types
of bearings and housings used by Ford. For the nine inch there are two bearing sizes used for
housing ends, the smaller eight inch used just one. However, for the nine inch (as assembled by
Ford) there are 3 different bearings- one small and two large. The two large are the same size ( I.D. /
O.D specs), but different types of bearings- one is the traditional sealed ball bearing, while the other
is the oil bathed roller bearing and race type. The eight inch and most nine inch housings used the
small bearing- including the 31 spline CJ cars, Mustang Hi-performance etc.. This bearing was of the
sealed ball bearing type, # RW207CCRA (specs: 1.378" I.D., 2.8246" O.D. by 0.8449" width). Early
Galaxies and Broncos and some mid 70's Torinos used the large type sealed ball bearing, which
meant they had a large tube housing end, bearing # 88128-RA (specs: 1.5312" I.D., 3.1496" O.D. by
width). The second type of large bearing (roller type) was used in later pickups and larger Ford cars,
bearing # A20 (specs. 1.530" I.D., 3.1530" O.D.), the seal was on outside of bearing. Because of the
two different size bearings used in the 9 inch, there are also two (actually three) different backing
plate mounting patterns as well. The standard small bearing has an approximately 3 1/2"
(horizontal)by 2" (vertical) pattern with 3/8 inch mounting hole diameter, while the large bearing is 3
1/2" by 2 3/8" respectively with 1/2 inch hole size.
Housing Ends/Brake Backing Plates
Shown above are a large bearing housing (to left) and a
small bearing (right), the bolt spacing is different
between the two as is the centre hole opening, thus
they utilize different backing plates for the brakes. Most
small to medium size cars utilized 10" rear brakes, in 1
3/4", 2" or 2 1/2" widths. The larger cars and many
trucks utilized 11" brakes, typically 2 1/4" width. Finding
the small housing 11" backing plates can be a little more
difficult than some of the other applications. Another
popular alternative is to upgrade to 10 X 2.5" . Photo
below shows the two different size backing plate
mounting studs- large and small used with respective
size bearing housings.
Axle Shafts
Shown left is a 31 spline shaft end in a 69 Cyclone CJ
Ford used either 28 spline or 31 spline axle shafts with
the nine inch, the eight inch came only in 28 spline, as
did the majority of nine inch car applications. For the
most part eight inch and nine inch car axle shafts will
interchange between housings of the same width, spline
count and bearing size (i.e. 8" 67 Mustang 28 spline
axle shafts will work in 9" 67 Mustang housing, etc.).A
method to identify 28 spline axle shafts can be by
looking at the centre brake hub area, a rectangular slot
in the centre will indicate 28 spline axles. The 31 spline
axle shafts will have a different appearance, with one
small centre chamfer and two outer holes in the centre
hub, however, 28 spline shafts can also appear like this
to, so it does not always indicate 31 spline shafts (see
photo below). Early axle shafts of the 28 spline variety
cannot be shortened, due to either a reduced diameter
between spline end and bearing end (early Mustangs,
Fairlanes, Falcons etc.), or because of a tapered shaft
which doesn't allow for re-splining (early full size).It
appears starting around 1967 the 28 spline shafts
became more solid and the shaft diameter increased
along the entire length, so shortening is possible and
they can be re-splined to their original 28 count. Most 31
spline shafts can be shortened and re-splined with no
problems.

Rear Axle Tags
Rear axle tags if present on your housing can aid in identifying what is behind your centre for gears,
splines etc. Ford has changed the tag over the years, but generally the application number-which
begins with the W on line one and in format of Wxx-x etc. (these can be referenced in id manuals to
identify original car/truck type installed in), the gear ratio and date code are given as well- with the
gear ratio generally starting the second line followed by the date code (most of the time). If the unit is
a locking type, the gear ratio will have an "L" after the first digit and before the final two digits (else
there will be a blank space for an open). The final info given on later tags is the housing type installed
into (which can be used to identify car/truck line installed in as well) – i.e. an 8 inch Mustang, 9 inch
Mustang, 8 inch Fairlane etc., housings can be slightly different even for similar or the same models.
For instance, an 8 inch Mustang housing (67-70) is "930" while an 8 inch Cougar for the same years
is a "931".The slight difference probably due to the different style lower spring plate and larger centre
pin hole used on the Cougar housings with the rubber pads - similar to the Fairlane mounting set up,
while the Mustang housing has a smaller centre pin hole in spring perch. This final axle Id number
can also be found on a cars build sheet (67 on up), just look under "Axle" section, it will appear
slightly different, with the a single digit at start that stands for model year followed by the three digit
axle housing Id number and then a letter suffix (this suffix will sometimes appear on tag line as well).
Thus an 8 inch housing used in a 68 Mustang would have "8930A" in the box labelled "Axle" on its
build sheet, and most likely just the "930" or "930A" on axle tag itself. A similar build sheet for a 67
Mustang with an 8 inch housing would have "7930A" etc.. Axle housing id numbers I have are the
following:

generally found attached to the passenger side of carrier assembly secured by one of the nuts on the
housing studs. Here are some examples:
Above is the earliest style tag I have seen used (mainly
on 57/58 Fords), it is quite simple - just the ratio given,
here 3.56.
Another early style tag used by Ford, this one is off a 62
Galaxy with a 3.00 open 9 inch. Tag reads C2AA4001
DV 100,second line:: 3.00 1MA
Here is a common Mustang tag WCZ-V identifies it as a
67-70 Mustang and 67-68 Cougar 8" rear with 2.79
ratio, open. Note no L between 2 and 7 on second line.
A "Posi", Equa-Lok or Traction-Lok rear is identified by
an "L" in between the 1st and 2nd digits of the ratio
given on the second line of tag. Here is a 2L80 ratio with
tag number WDJ-B, which corresponds to a 8 inch used
in 65-66 Mustangs.
This tag is off an open 3.25 ratio 66-70 Fairlane or 67 to
69 Comet with an open 9 inch differential. Note date
code of 7BD ( 7= model year:1967,B= Month: February
and the D= week: 4th week of Feb.1967)
Ford changed the layout of the tags sometime in the
early 70's or late 60's, here is a WFE-BK2 tag, followed
by a date code of 4E24 (April 24,1974), the second line
now gives besides the ratio-here a 3L50, the ring gear
actually used inside-this one is a true 9" gear. This tag
is off a 74 Ford truck.
Here is an example tag of a 9 inch that isn't quite up to
the full measure, it is a 3.50 ratio, but followed by that
are the numbers 8.7 which denote that this carrier is
sporting a ring gear of an actual 8 3/4 inch diameter.
This one is off a 1970 Bronco, built 3rd week of April
1970.This would have been a 28 spline unit when
checked in manual.
How to identify a “Posi”
The two basic types of “Posi” units (Posi is the G.M. name for its positive traction system which has
been become a part of the nomenclature) are the early Equa-Lok and the subsequent Traction-Lok
units ( I will refer to them here as “spools” to simplify things). I am not exactly sure when the EquaLoks first appeared, early units are scarce – I haven’t seen many prior to 1964/65 and these are quite
rare. From what I have seen the Equa-Loks were used up until 1969, which is when I believe the
Traction-Lok units first appeared. There are visual and internal differences between the two spools
and most parts do not interchange.
Shown above is an example of an Equa-Lok in its
carrier, you will note the recessed bolt holes and 5/8”
headed bolts, as well the rough cast appearance of the
cover assembly, it is not machined as it is in the
Traction-Lok units.
Internally the number of clutch disc and plates differs
between the Equa-Lok and Traction-Lok spools, the
Equa-Lok having only 3 fibre plates and 4 steel with one
large belveder spring applying force. The Traction-Lok
unit utilizes 4 fibre plates and 5 steel plates, with 4
smaller springs applying force. Both Equa-Lok and
Traction-Lok units were available in 2 pin and 4 pin
varieties, in either 28 spline or 31 spline versions. The
four pin 31 spline unit would be more commonly found
as a Traction-Lok piece. The four pin being the heavier
duty unit utilizing 4 spider gears vs just two in the two
pin variety (as noted in figure above a four pin variety
will have actually just 3 pins and a two pin will in reality
just have 1 pin- the number of spider gears is actually
what is being referred to).Shown below are the internals
of a four pin Equa-Lok, note the five “fingers” on the
steel clutch plates-the tiny circular tabs on outer edge(Traction-Lok units will have only 4).
The Traction-Lok
Shown left is an open 28 spline spool (on left) and a
Traction-Lok “Posi” 28 spline 2 pin spool ( to the right).
Here is a close up of the Traction-Lok spool, note
recessed bolt holes through cover for holding ring gear
on.
Notice the flat surface around holes on the open spool.
The heads of the bolts which pass through cover and
fasten ring gear to the spool are also smaller on the
Traction-Lok piece 5/8” socket size, and they use a thin
metal washer.
The bolt retaining ring gear on the open spool is 3/ 4”
socket size, no washer used.
Above are a 28 spline 2 pin Traction-lok unit and a 31
spline 4 pin Traction-Lok unit, notice anything wrong?
The arrows are pointing to the cracks in the 31 spline
unit removed from an N case carrier.
Unfortunately this is the end result, a destroyed Posi
unit, this is even the improved cover – D0O part
number, earlier units were even more prone to cracking
here, thus the necessity for the Detroit Locker units
used behind many of the higher performance
applications.
Gears, Yokes etc.
Here are two nine inch ring gears side by side, one from
a 3.00 ratio (thinner gear), the other from a 3.50 ratio
(thicker).An easy way to spot a nice ratio after a while is
by visual id.-the thicker the gear the better the
performance ratio, thinner the gear= less performance,
more fuel economy and better highway performance.
These two gears are the same ratio- 3.00, but one is
only 8 3/ 4” diameter, the other a true 9”.When gear is
installed in the case, a true 9" ring gear will have very
little clearance between housing and large gear (most
noticeable at bottom), while an 8 3/4" setup will have
almost enough room to put your finger tips into between
gear and case (but don't due it- it can hurt).Don't feel
slighted if you find you only have an 8 3/4" setup, they
are plenty strong, Ford used them behind the HiPo 289
applications in many Mustangs and others.
Can you spot the difference in the left two pinion gears?
Both are 10 tooth gears taken from 3.50 gear ratios, but
one has been used behind a Daytona pinion support
with the larger inner bearing (see above sections for
discussion
on
Daytona
pinion
support
identification).Note the larger bearing on support to the
left.
These two yokes are quite similar and take the same U
joint, except the shorter one is used with the larger
bearing Daytona Pinion used in an N case. I believe the
shorter yoke was necessary due to the added size of
inner bearing. When installed on there respective
carriers, supports equal out to approximately same
height. I am told that the standard yoke can be
machined down to work with the Daytona pinion.
Crush sleeves are used when setting up most 9 inch
carriers to set bearing load, but on the N case with
Daytona pinion a non-crush solid spacer is used, shown
above are the two side by side (solid spacer on right).
