This mechanism helps to contain the reaction that originates at the input, when removing the wrench (or ratcheting back) in order to get more of an angle to retighten. The non-existence of such a mechanism makes the use of the multiplier, in some cases, uncomfortable, dangerous or quite simply impossible. The anti-wind-up ratchet mechanism locks the multiplier onto the bolt once torque is applied. The multipliers can then be used upside down, and will support their own weight.
