The Kobe-based Refugee Assistance Headquarters (RHQ) provides a
confidential counseling service for refugees, convention refugees, their family
members, and asylum seekers in English and Japanese on every Thursday of
the month (10:00 - 16:00) at the NIC 3F Info Counter. Reservations are

Over 10,000 English language books including travel guides, popular manga,
non-fiction, fiction, children’s books, and Japanese study guides. Borrow up to 6
books for a period of 14 days! Membership is free and open to everyone resident
in the Chubu Area. A form of ID that shows your current address is required.

The Nagoya City Multicultural Coexistence Promotion Plan (NCMCPP) is
the set of guidelines (covering the period 2012 – 2017) for Nagoya
City’s comprehensive and systematic promotion of measures to build a
society of multicultural coexistence. Nagoya City is currently gathering
opinions from a broad section of the community as it works toward the
formulation of the 2nd NCMCPP.
At these meetings on the theme of the Multicultural Coexistence
Promotion Plan , participants will think about building a community of
multicultural coexistence through the discussion of how they feel about
Nagoya in their daily lives, how they feel it could be better, and how
they would like to change it. Participants of any nationality are
welcome!

NIC Japanese Class for Adults NIC日本語の会
For non-native speakers of Japanese, up to 15-20 places available
per course. All lessons are held in Japanese, and knowledge of
hiragana and katakana are assumed. In the event of excess
applications, places will be allocated by lottery. A range of courses
are available from conversation to kanji. See the website for more

NIC Japanese Class for Children
NIC子ども日本語教室
For non-native speakers of Japanese who were born between
April 2, 2000, and April 1, 2009. Maximum of 50 places. In the
event of excess applications, places will be decided on a needs
basis. Students will learn Japanese skills necessary for school
and daily life.
When: 10 lessons every Sunday from 17 Jan. to 27 Mar. (10:00 11:30; No class 14 Feb.)
Where: Nagoya International Center, 3F Lecture Room 1 and 2
Cost: 1,000 Yen for 10 lessons.
How to Apply: Come to NIC 4F Lecture Room 3 on Sun. 10 Jan.,
between 9:45 and 10:15. Following completion of the application
procedure, applicants will be interviewed. Applicants must attend
with their parent, guardian, or person responsible for their welfare
(ie. teacher, etc.). Application forms and information can be found

Physical and Mental Health Consultations for
Foreign Residents

健康相談会
This comprehensive consultation session, held in conjunction with related
specialist medical organizations, aims to help resident foreign nationals
who might be hindered by differences in language and customs to feel at
ease about their health, through early detection of illness, prevention, and
providing information about the medical treatment system. Interpreting will
be available in English, Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, Filipino, and
Vietnamese. Organized by Nagoya City Health and Welfare Bureau,
Nagoya International Center, and Medical Information Center Aichi, there
will be free health consultations, tuberculosis testing, consultations for
foreign children and their guardians, and a corner with information on the
Long-Term Care Insurance and the National Health Insurance systems.

Disaster Support Volunteer Training Course
災害時外国人支援ボランティア研修
NIC will be holding a training course for volunteers providing support to
foreign residents in times of disaster. Participants are sought to play the role
of foreign disaster victims during workshops and simulations. There will
also be a report on support activities for foreign residents in the wake of
the disaster caused by the torrential rains in the Kantō and Tōhoku regions
in September 2015.

The Nagoya Certified Public Tax Accountants' Association together with the
Nagoya International Center will be hosting free tax income consultations for
foreign residents to assist with their income tax returns and other tax related
issues.
① General Consultations: Sun. 21 Feb. 10:00 to 16:00 (no consultations
12:00 – 13:00) at Nagoya International Center 5F Conference Room 1.
② Individual Consultations: 13, 20, 27, 28 Feb., and 5, 6 Mar. from
13:00 to 17:00 at Nagoya International Center 3F Information Counter.
Places: ① Up to 30 people ② Up to 36 people
Cost: Consultation free; Fee of 10 Yen per page payable for printouts of
materials.

The Elements of Nagoya Cuisine
特別展
「名古屋めしのもと」
Nagoya-meshi (Nagoya cuisine) such as miso-katsu,
miso-nikomi-udon and kishimen are becoming tourism assets,
attracting the attention of people throughout Japan. To examine
the unique characteristics of Nagoya's food culture, this special
exhibition looks at the elements of Nagoya-meshi: mame-miso (豆
みそ/soybean miso) and tamari soy sauce. The diverse food culture
that has existed here since before the appearance of
Nagoya-meshi is also featured.

Nagoya City Fire Department's 2016 New
Year Event 平成28年名古屋市消防出初式
See around 2,000 brave figures (professional and volunteer
firefighters, and members of community disaster prevention
organizations) and vehicles including fire vehicles, ambulances and
fire helicopters in a display of fire equipment, and a thrilling
comprehensive disaster drill on land, water, and in the air as
firefighters demonstrate coordinated rescue activities, culminating in
a huge water discharge exercise. There will also be an encounter area
in the Jetty Plaza in front of the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium with
musical performances by the Fire Department band, and a kids'
corner (with fireproof uniforms to try on). Nagoya City volunteer
firefighter supporters, dela, will also be hosting an event.

See around 200 individual multicolored plants of the family
Orchidaceae in the large Crystal Garden hothouse. Plants will also

In the lead up to St. Valentine's Day, a variety of flowers heralding
the coming of spring await visitors in the Crystal Garden. A
number of events are scheduled, including Happy Kids Dance
(Sat. 16 & Sun. 17 Jan.; 13:30 - 15:30) a Christmas Rose Fair
(Thu. 28 Jan. to Wed. 3 Feb.; 10:00 - 17:00); an Ice Tulip Garden
(from early Feb.); a Flower Valentine event (Mon. 8 Feb. to Sun.
14 Feb.) featuring a Valentine decoration exhibit contest, bouquet
making, etc. A Valentine concert is also planned, and the Flarie
Café will be offering original Valentine-themed sweets.

January at Atsuta Shrine 熱田神宮の1月行事
Tōkashinji 踏歌神事
Said to draw from court rituals of the Heian period, ritual dancers
decorate their headwear with cherry blossoms and dance as the
earth begins to show signs of the coming spring in this Shinto
ritual to pray for the removal of misfortune and invite good
fortune.
When: Mon. 11 Jan. (from 10:00 and 13:00)
Hoshashinji 歩射神事
A traditional Shinto ritual held annually at Atsuta Shrine. Three
pairs of Shinto priests take turns shooting arrows at a target. A
total of 36 arrows are shot, when the last arrow hits the target,
spectators rush to pick up pieces of the target that the arrows
broke up as it is believed that bits of the target help keep away
bad luck.

7-minute walk from Jingu Nishi Station (神宮西駅) on the Meijo
Subway Line (地下鉄名城線).
Dairyūji Temple: Hatsu-Kannon Daruma Kuyō
大龍寺
「初観音 だるま供養」
Daruma Daishi (達磨大師 / Bodhidharma) is worshipped at Dairyūji
Temple due to his influence on the revival of the temple around 500
years ago. When the building was destroyed in the Nobi Earthquake
in the Meiji period, too, the priest prayed to Daruma Daishi for its
reconstruction, and it was reestablished over a period of 20 years.
Today, the temple offers prayer Daruma figures (祈願だるま), avatars of
Daruma Daishi, each one bearing a prayer slip so that the recipient's
prayers might be fulfilled.
During the Hatsu-Kannon Daruma Kuyō, the temple is filled with
people returning Daruma who have helped with their prayers, and
receiving new ones. After a prayer meeting at 10:00, the Daruma
Kuyō (Daruma burning ceremony) is held solemnly from 13:00. The
used Daruma are piled up, and burned on a bamboo fire to chanting
as sutras are recited. Around 10,000 Daruma are burned over the
afternoon. With around 100 street stalls, the event is sure to be an
enjoyable day out for families.

Access: From the bus terminal in front of JR Gifu Station (JR岐阜駅),
take the Gifu Bus bound for Takatomi (高富) departing from Stop 12,
and alight at the Takatomi-Dairyūji-mae (高富大竜寺前) stop; From
outside Meitetsu Gifu Station (名鉄岐阜駅), take the Gifu Bus bound
for Takatomi departing from Stop 4, and alight at Takatomi-Dairyūji-mae.
Osu Kannon Setsubun Ship Parade
大須観音節分会
Setsubun (節分) is the last day before the first day of spring on the old
Japanese calendar. Each year at Nagoya’s Osu Kannon Temple a

Islands of Aichi: Himakajima あいちの離島:日間賀島
Did you know that Aichi Prefecture
has a number of islands that you can
get to in under two hours from
Nagoya? Himakajima (日間賀島),
Sakushima (佐久島) and Shinojima (篠
島) are also great places to get away
from the hustle and bustle of
everyday urban life, either for the day
or overnight.
This issue we take a look at
Himakajima.
Himakajima, known as the closest
island to Nagoya, is located in
Mikawa Bay (only around 80
minutes), 2.4 km off Morozaki at the
tip of the Chita Peninsula. A treasure
trove of delicacies from the sea, the

'octopus island' or 'fugu (pufferfish)
island,' and visitors are greeted by a large octopus monument
upon arrival, and octopus
and fugu can even be
found on manholes around
the island.
Come November, the sight
of dried octopuses swaying
in the breeze can be seen
here and there around the
island. It is said that these
stretched and dried
octopuses are the origin of
Hoshi-tako (dried octopuses)
the expression
'hippari-dako' (ひっぱりだこ, lit. 'pulled octopus'), meaning 'to be in
great demand.' At New Year, they are presented as offerings to
the patron deity to pray for bumper catches, the safety of one's
family, and good health. It is from this that the island gets one of
its other names, 'Tako-no-shima' (多幸の島, lit. 'island of much
happiness,' but with the same pronunciation as 'octopus island.').

The winter months are the best
time for fugu. The season for
fugu cuisine begins in October.
As the weather gets colder,
fugu becomes even tastier.

(thinly-sliced fugu sashimi)

cuisine in courses, with fugu
prepared and served in a variety of
ways, sometimes with the option
of enjoying a hot bath, either as
part of an overnight stay package,
or for day visitors (see the
Himakajima Tourism Association
website for details). Travel agents
including Meitetsu World Travel (名
鉄観光) also offer packages with or
without accommodation.
Activities
Even on foot, it only takes about
two hours to get all the way
around Himakajima, but renting a
bicycle at either the West Port (西
港) or East Port (東港) and cycling

around to the island's sights is
another option.
For lovers of seafood who want to catch their own, fishing gear
can also be rented near the high speed boat disembarkation
points, and you can also arrange to be taken out to try fishing on
a boat. In summer, you can also try the unique experience of
catching octopuses with your bare hands.
Other summer attractions include Himakajima's beaches. The
Sunrise Beach (サンライズビーチ) on the eastern side offers a great
view of the rising sun in the morning, and you can watch the
sunset on the western side's Sunset Beach (サンセットビーチ). A
number of events are held over the summer, including up-close
dolphin encounters.
Access: By train: From Kōwa Station (河和駅, around 50 minutes
from Nagoya) on the Meitetsu Kōwa Line (名鉄河和線) walk to
Kōwa Port (河和港, 5 minutes) and take a high speed boat to
Himakajima (around 20 minutes; Adults 1,400 Yen one way, 2,690
Yen return / Children 710 Yen one way, 1,360 return). Boats stop
at West Port or East Port, or both, then go on to Shinojima (篠島).
By car: From Morozaki Port (師崎港) take a high speed boat to
Himakajima (around 10 minutes; Adults 700 Yen one way, 1,340
return / Children 350 Yen one way, 670 Yen return). Boats stop at

Beginning in 1964 as a tiny model shop in Osaka, Kaiyodo became a meeting place for fans of plastic models. Their production of figures (フィギュア / figyua) began when they started producing figures of characters they themselves wanted as
small lot "garage kits," before their phenomenal shokugan (食玩 / snack & toy) figures. Figure modeling later came into
fusion with otaku culture, and international recognition as works of art came through Kaiyodo's collaboration with artist
Murakami Takashi. The company has also striven to develop new products such as the Capsule Museum and Capsule Q
Project series. Not only is this the story of Kaiyodo, but also an opportunity to reflect on how the figure came to assume its
place in culture. Commemorating Kaiyodo's 50th anniversary, this exhibition presents the company's history and transitions
through a wide variety of works, from the early days through to some of the most recent products. The creations of model
artists responsible for works that have attained the status of art internationally are also featured.

Rarities from the Tokugawa Art Museum 知られざる徳川美術館コレクション 珍品・奇品・迷品!?
The Tokugawa Art Museum has continually striven to introduce select
artworks gleaned from regular surveys of its holdings. Yet there are
objects that have been difficult to display in the standard exhibitions
centered on the samurai culture of the Edo period. Indeed, there are
many that have never been displayed. There are others that have only
been mentioned in written commentary. This exhibition will debut some
of these unfamiliar works.

Released in May, 1977 (1978 in Japan), the epoch-making film Star Wars has remained wildly popular all over the world.
No longer constrained to the world of cinema, it has transcended genres and continues to fascinate people of all ages and
walks of life. This exhibition introduces the appeal of Star Wars through the theme of "vision," with pictures commissioned
from artists carefully selected from all over the world by George Lucas himself, and concept art, costumes and props actually
used in the production of the films from the collection of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, combined with video footage.

Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art: The Secret
of Picasso's Genius 愛知県美術館「ピカソ、天才の秘密」
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) created numerous artworks with superhuman
creativity, an artist truly worthy of the label of "genius." Focusing on his
Blue (1901-04) and Rose (1904-06) periods, this exhibition presents the
first half of his life, from his boyhood to Cubism. Assembled with the
cooperation of galleries and private owners not only in Japan, but around
the world, this is a precious opportunity to reexamine Picasso's work
from this period, more than one hundred years after the Blue and Rose
periods, and his spearheading of the Cubist movement.

Nagoya Sightseeing Route Bus Me∼guru

Do you know about the Me~guru sightseeing bus? Whether
you’re a tourist or a longer-term resident looking to check out
some of Nagoya’s sights in a convenient way (and minimizing the
risk of getting lost while navigating between attractions), the
Me~guru is a great, economical way to do it.
When: The Me~guru operates Tuesday to Sunday. (No service on
Mondays, or the following day if Monday is a national holiday.) On
weekends and national holidays, buses depart every 20-30
minutes; on weekdays, buses depart every 30-60 minutes.
Where: Me~guru buses depart from Nagoya Station, Bus Stop
8 and stop at the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and
Technology, Noritake Garden, Nagoya Castle, Tokugawaen (The
Tokugawa Art Museum, Hosa Library), Cultural Path Futaba
Museum, Nagoya City Archives South, Nagoya TV Tower, Hirokoji-Sakae, and Hirokoji-Fushimi, before heading back to Nagoya
Castle, Noritake Garden, Toyota Commemorative Museum of
Industry and Technology, then return to the terminus at Nagoya
Station.
