If you like action and adventure, you
won’t be able to put down the novels
featuring Emerson Moore, including
Sandustee: The Search for the
Nazarene’s Code, where Emerson is
on a worldwide chase for clues to find a
lost Biblical scroll. Rainbow’s End has a
touch of Civil War conspiracy and Vatican intrigue meets Hurricane Katrina
in Promised Land. The Other Side of
Hell has scuba action, drug running, and sunken treasure in the
Caymans and the President disappears during a bioterrorist crisis
on Lake Erie in Tan Lines. Adamov is a graduate of Kent State
University and lives in Wooster. [Table 34]
Ian Adams
Ohio is a glorious natural land and
Cuyahoga Falls wildlife photographer
Ian Adams has three new calendars capturing some of the Buckeye State’s most
photogenic sites. The Ohio State
Parks 2014 Calendar has stunning
photos of Ohio’s pristine and unique
parks. The Ohio Nature 2014 Calendar also celebrates Ohio’s natural
splendor of colorful forests and stunning
wilderness. Ohio’s cities serve up a rich mix of history and the
arts while friendly, small towns and farms offer a more relaxed
and scenic atmosphere. Delight in the most picturesque places of
interest with the Ohio Places 2014 Calendar. [Table 26]
Mark Wayne Adams
Mark Wayne Adams has roots
in Canton, and is the illustrator of Bobbie Hinman’s popular
Fairy books, including The Belly
Button Fairy (ages 4-8), about a
grandmotherly fairy that makes
sure every child has a belly button,
and The Fart Fairy (ages 4-8), a
mischievous little fairy responsible
for the funny sounds and odors that are a part of everyday life.
When doing ridiculous things, his mom would say, Nicholas,
That’s Ridiculous! (ages 4-8) at least thirty times a day!
Children will relate to ridiculous Nicholas and Jilli, That’s
Silly! (ages 4-8) while parents will appreciate the humor behind the happenings. King for a Day: Story of Stories
(ages 4-8) is a heartwarming tale about friendship, integrity, and
self-discovery. [Table 30]
Susan Albers is a psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic, specializing in eating issues. In
EatQ: Unlock the Weight-Loss
Power of Emotional Intelligence,

is as it relates to your EatQ. Albers will
help you identify a strategy for weight loss
that factors in your personal schedule,
understanding what you eat and why, and
how cravings, environment, and mood
affect your relationship with food. Companion volumes 50 Ways to
Soothe Yourself Without Food and “But I Deserve This Chocolate!”: The 50 Most Common Diet-Derailing Excuses and How
to Outwit Them provide mindfulness exercises to help you reroute
your thoughts so that you can meet your health goals. [Table 10]

Hiking is a great way to relax, connect with
nature, and enjoy time with your family.
Bringing your kids along can be rewarding,
but it can also add new challenges to your
trip. Get Your Kids Hiking: How
to Start Them Young and Keep It
Fun is loaded with everything you need to
know to hit the trail with kids; from gear to
simple techniques that will make your hike

included bears, bugs, blisters, and skunk bedmates. [Table 16]
Dan Andreasen
Medina illustrator Dan Andreasen’s warm
illustrations accompany Someone’s
Sleepy (ages 3-6), a tender rhyming
picture book about a mother readying
her child for bed. In Saturday with
Daddy (ages 4-8), a young elephant
and his father spend Saturday running
errands, sipping lemonade, and having a
cookout. Colorful, playful animals romp
and cavort to the holiday song The
Twelve Days of Christmas (ages 4-8) and in The Night Before
Christmas Deep Under the Sea (ages 4-8), the classic poem is reimagined in a cheerful underwater setting. The Giant of Seville:
A “Tall” Tale Based on a True Story (ages 4-8) is a heartwarming story about the legendary resident of Seville, Martin Van
Buren Bates, who stood at well over seven feet tall. [Table 16]

Carl Sferrazza Anthony
Tom Batiuk
Ida McKinley: The Turn-of-theCentury First Lady through War,
Assassination, and Secret Disability is the first full-length biography
of Ida McKinley, born in Canton in 1847,
and the wife of President William McKinley (from 1897-1901). Long demeaned by
history because she suffered from epilepsy,
this fascinating biography is essential reading
for anyone interested in the life and times of an extraordinary First
Lady from Ohio. Anthony writes frequently on the subject of the
political and social power of presidential wives and families. He will
also sign copies of his biography of Nellie Taft as well as his books
on America’s First Families and The Kennedy White House.
[Table 39]
Mindee Arnett
Sixteen-year-old Dusty Everhart is a
Nightmare. Literally. Being the only
Nightmare at Arkwell Academy, a
boarding school for magickind is hard
enough, but when Dusty sneaks into Eli
Booker’s house, things get a whole lot
more complicated. Eli is dreaming of a
murder. Then Eli’s dream comes true.
In The Nightmare Affair (ages
12-16), Dusty has to follow the clues—
both within Eli’s dreams and out of them—to stop the killer
before more people turn up dead...and before the killer learns
what she’s up to and marks her as the next target. Mindee Arnett
lives on a horse farm in Germantown, Ohio. [Table 40]
James Jessen Badal
From 1934 to 1938 a nameless phantom
named the “Mad Butcher” littered Cleveland with the remains of dismembered
corpses. Never caught or even officially
identified, the Butcher simply faded into
history, leaving behind a legend that both
haunts and fascinates Cleveland to this
day. Badal’s In the Wake of the Butcher:
Cleveland’s Torso Murders recounts this
dark chapter in true crime history. His
second work, Though Murder Has No Tongue: The Lost Victim
of Cleveland’s Mad Butcher, is a study of the arrest and mysterious death of the only man ever charged with the killings. Badal
now concludes his examination of the case with Hell’s Wasteland: The Pennsylvania Torso Murders, looking at similar murders that took place just across Ohio’s state line. [Table 13]

In The Complete Funky Winkerbean
Volume 1: 1972-1974, we meet the comic
strip’s cast of characters, including Funky,
Les, and band director Harry L. Dinkle,
who is based on a real figure from Batiuk’s
junior high school days in Avon Lake.
The Complete Funky Winkerbean
Volume 2: 1975-1977 sees the comic
strip rounding into the form that will carry
it into its middle years. With gentle humor
and not-so-gentle puns, Les, Funky, Crazy Harry, and the gang comment on life’s little absurdities. Batiuk has been recognized for his
humorous portrayals of the students and staff at Westview High and
acclaimed for his sensitive treatment of social issues as exemplified
by the comic sequence which portrays character Lisa Moore’s battle
with breast cancer, collected in the book, Lisa’s Story. [Table 1]
Richard Baumgartner
Civil War historian Baumgartner’s Fractured Paths of Duty is the third
volume in his regimental letters series. The
first volume, Yankee Tigers II, provides a
collection of letters covering the service of
the 125th Ohio Volunteer Infantry—one of
the most celebrated fighting regiments from
the Buckeye State. The second volume, The
Bully Boys: In Camp and Combat with
the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, 1861-1864 focuses on the very first regiment to heed the
call to arms and leave for the scenes of conflict. The 244 collected
letters presented in Fractured Paths of Duty: The Civil
War Letters of Surgeon J. Dexter Cotton and Adjutant George B. Turner tell the story of their regiment—a
valuable contribution since no formal history has been published
before about the 92nd Ohio Volunteers. [Table 42]
Lester Beachy
Why do the Amish live as they do?
Lester Beachy lives in Sugarcreek and
is a member of the New Order Amish
church. After frequently being asked
questions about the Amish, he decided
to put the questions and answers into
a book. Our Amish Values covers
topics such as Amish origins, the church, dating, holidays, nonresistance, Rumspringa, school, excommunication, tradition, and
more. Categorized alphabetically, the commentary for each letter
is accompanied by full-color, full-page photos from the camera of
Amish Country photographer Doyle Yoder. [Table 8]
Gail Ghetia Bellamy
Duffy Brown
Remember how Christmas felt as a kid?
Gail Ghetia Bellamy’s Cleveland
Christmas Memories takes a nostalgic look at the season from the Cleveland
perspective: seeing Mr. Jingeling, waiting
in line to see Santa at Higbee’s, and ice
skating on Public Square. Numerous
photos of historic and contemporary
scenes, advertisements, and toys will stir
up your memories of decorating the tree
and the gifts you hoped to see beneath it. Gail is a native Clevelander and takes a delicious look at the past in Cleveland Food
Memories, celebrating the food that Clevelanders loved and the
people and places who made dining special. [Table 18]
While others girls dreamed of dating
handsome celebrities, Duffy Brown, of
Milford, Ohio, longed to take Sherlock
Holmes to the prom. Today she conjures
up who-done-it stories featuring newly
divorced fashionista/sleuth Reagan Summerside. In Iced Chiffon, Reagan turns
the first floor of her Savannah home
into a consignment shop and fills it with
the remnants of her rich-wife wardrobe.
When her ex-husband’s new girlfriend is found dead, the gossips
flock to her store with information more precious than a vintage
Louis Vuitton. Then, in Killer in Crinolines, Reagan should
be devoting her energy to her cosignment shop, but when her dear
friend is arrested for killing her husband, Reagan vows to clear her
friend’s name. [Table 36]
Tim Bowers
Everybody knows your typical dragon
breathes fire. But Crispin doesn’t. Crispin
wonders if he’ll ever find his inner fire in
Not Your Typical Dragon. Hamster Seymour is in for a life lesson as well
in Memoirs of a Hamster, when
he only begins to fully appreciate his safe
and cozy home after he’s been out of his
cage. Tim Bowers’ whimsical illustrations
also accompany Maestro Stu Saves the
Zoo as well as the dinosaur tales Suppose You Meet a Dinosaur:
A First Book of Manners and Dinosaur Pet. Snow won’t hold
back a dog—especially not Snow Dog, Go Dog who loves to
run and play and go sledding with her boy. Tim Bowers lives in
Granville (all his picture books are for ages 4-8). [Table 21]
Richard Bradley
Spiders are among the most diverse
groups of terrestrial invertebrates, yet
they are among the least studied and
understood. Common Spiders of
North America is the first comprehensive guide to all 68 spider families in
North America, with beautiful color illustrations of 469 of the most commonly
encountered species. Group keys enable
identification by web type and other
observable details. Species descriptions include identification tips,
typical habitat, geographic distribution, and behavioral notes. A
concise illustrated introduction to spider biology and anatomy
explains spider relationships. Dr. Bradley is an associate professor
at OSU and his book is a delightful resource for curious naturalists. [Table 12]
Rae Carson
Chosen for an extraordinary destiny,
Elisa, a 16-year-old princess will become
the heart of a revolution—if the prophecy is fulfilled and if she finds the power
deep within herself in The Girl of Fire
and Thorns (ages 13-17). In the sequel,
Crown of Embers (ages 13-17), Elisa
faces sorcery, adventure, untold power,
and romance. In the trilogy’s conclusion, The Bitter Kingdom (ages 13-17), Elisa will travel into an
unknown enemy realm to win back her true love, save her kingdom,
and uncover the final secrets of her destiny. And she must rise up as
champion—even to those who have hated her—or her kingdom will
fall. Can Elisa be fiercer and more cunning than her adversaries? Rae
Carson lives in Worthington with her family. [Table 23]
Jody Casella
Ever since the car accident that killed his
twin brother, Marshall Windsor has been
consumed with guilt and crippled by
secrets of that fateful night. He has only
one chance to make amends, to right his
wrongs, and to set things right. He must
find a Thin Space (ages 13-17)—a
mythical point where the barrier between
this world and the next is thin enough for
a person to step through to the other side.
Blending the relatively unknown Celtic myth of the thin space
with the universal teenage struggle for identity and selfhood,
debut author Jody Casella of Upper Arlington brings a fresh voice
to the real-life issues of love, loss, and responsibility. [Table 9]

Cinda Williams Chima
Richard Cowdrey
For the first time, all four books of the
critically acclaimed Seven Realms series
(for ages 13-17) are available in a paperback boxed set: The Demon King, The
Exiled Queen, The Gray Wolf Throne,
and The Crimson Crown are epic
fantasy at its very best, rife with political and romantic intrigue as the fates of
former thief Han Alister and Princess
Raisa unfold. Universes collide, intrigues
abound, and familiar faces return in The Enchanter Heir,
Cinda’s brilliant new chapter in the beloved and bestselling
contemporary fantasy Heir Chronicles series (for ages 13-17). Both
series are available singly or in boxed sets. Cinda Chima lives in
Chagrin Falls. [Table 6]
Richard Cowdrey is an illustrator from
Gambier who does the Bad Dog, Marley
series (ages 4-8) of picture books. Cowdrey’s timeless, endearing illustrations bring
new life to Felix Salten’s Bambi (ages
9-12), the story of a special deer’s life in the
woods. Children will delight in celebrating how far love will travel to find them in
(ages 4-8), a beautiful love story that is
appropriate for adopted children. The Donkey that No One
Could Ride (ages 4-8) is a lowly creature that believes he can do
nothing noble, but that’s before he meets the Master. The Legend
of the Candy Cane (ages 4-8) is a Christmas story that will help
families celebrate the mystery and miracle of the season. [Table 7]
Mark Clark
Julie Cummins
Searching For the You We Adore
first book left off, chronicling the historic comeback of the series
and its emergence as a pop-culture touchstone. [Table 43]
Born and raised in Loudonville, Julie now
lives in New York state and her small town
and big city experiences come together
in Country Kid, City Kid (ages 4-8) in
which two kids with different backgrounds
meet. Sam Patch: Daredevil Jumper
jumped right into American Legend when
he plunged into Niagara Falls in 1827.
The word “daredevil” sparked more books:
Women Daredevils: Thrills, Chills, and
Frills (ages 5-10) and Women Explorers: Perils, Pistols, and
Petticoats (ages 5-10). Julie’s newest book features another daredevil pilot, Flying Solo: How Ruth Elder Soared into
America’s Heart (ages 5-10), about a vivacious beauty queen’s
attempt to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927. [Table 40]
Shelley Costa
Robin Davis
Mark Clark lives in Mentor-on-theLake, and writes about classic movies and TV series. Star Trek FAQ:
Everything Left to Know about the
First Voyages of the Starship Enterprise tells the complete story of Star
Trek, beginning with the books, films,
and TV shows, through the dramatic
behind-the-scenes stories of the show’s
production, along with in-depth looks
at the show’s iconic leads, and profiles of guest stars. Star Trek
FAQ 2.0: Everything Left to know about the Next
Generation, the Movies, and Beyond picks up where the
You Cannoli Die Once is an
entertaining and delightful mystery
where Italian chef Eve Angelotta and
her cousins start their own investigation
to clear their grandmother’s name after
she gets arrested for murder. When her
grandmother’s boyfriend is found dead,
the question arises: Can a woman this
fiery and stubborn be capable of
murder? The police seem to think so,
and they put Eve’s grandmother behind bars, while Eve, sexy
neighborhood attorney Joe Beck, and the entire family try every
trick in the cookbook to unravel a tangle of lies and expose the
killer. Shelley Costa lives in Cleveland and teaches fiction and
screen writing at the Cleveland Institute of Art. [Table 31]
6
Robin thought she would never marry,
join an organized religion, or move back
to Ohio. Never say never! Recipe for
Joy: A Stepmom’s Story of Finding Faith, Following Love, and
Feeding a Family shares Robin’s stories
of food, faith, and family life, and the
discovery that “food” is the language we
can speak when stepping into unfamiliar
territory. You and your family will have a
great time fixing up Star Wars-themed treats with Wookie Cookies
or The Star Wars Cookbook (which contains several recipes from
Wookie Cookies as well as some new ones) which will delight any
Jedi appetite. Prior to joining the staff at Kenyon College, Robin was
the food editor at the The Columbus Dispatch for 11 years. [Table 28]
Faith Durand
David FitzSimmons
Everyone loves pudding! Chocolate,
pistachio, butterscotch, maple bourbon.
But why stop there? No-bake desserts
include rice pudding with lemon, Nutella
fluff, Thai sticky rice with mango, and
wholesome “jello” made with fruit juice.
No-bake cookies, and icebox cakes with
whipped cream and graham crackers round
out these special, delicious desserts. (Lots
of them are gluten-free as well.) Bakeless
Sweets is the first cookbook to give you all of these beloved nobake desserts in one big book. By day, Ohio native Faith Durand is
executive editor of The Kitchn, a home cooking and kitchen design
blog. By night she writes cookbooks and food essays. [Table 32]
As a child, David FitzSimmons loved little
critters, often collecting and sharing them
on the school playground. Today he continues sharing this love of nature through
his photography and his children’s books.
In Curious Critters (ages 5-10),
amazing animals—from a beautiful butterfly to a wise old owl—pose for portraits.
Luckily, David also jotted down what the
pink katydid, jabbering jay, poetic possum,
and other Curious Critters had to say! Kids ages 5-12 can explore
the amazing, up-close worlds of these animals in an interactive
presentation with David at 2:30 p.m. [Table 29]
Lynda Durrant
Amanda Flower
In late October 1776, Ariel is only nine
years old, but General George Washington asks him to be a spy just before an
important battle. Ariel Bradley, Spy
for General Washington (ages
5-10) tells how Ariel’s valuable intelligence helped the colonists win the Battle
of White Plains. Later in life, Ariel Bradley settled in Summit County, Ohio, with
his family. Lynda’s previous novel about
Johnny Appleseed, The Sun, the Rain, and the Appleseed (ages
9-12), also takes place in Ohio and Imperfections (ages 9-12) is
set in a Shaker community in Kentucky in the 1860s. My Last
Skirt (ages 9-12) tells the remarkable true story of Jenny Hodgers,
a brave woman who dressed as a man and served for three years in
the Civil War. [Table 44]
Amanda Flower lives in Tallmadge and
has a new stand-alone mystery, Murder, Plain and Simple, as well as two
new books in the Appleseed Creek mystery
series. In A Plain Death, Chloe debuts as
a sleuth when an accident turns to murder. In book two, A Plain Scandal,
Chloe takes on a mysterious assailant
that is cutting off the hair and beards
of Amish women and men. Now, in A
Plain Disappearance, Chloe has a new romantic interest,
but she is thrown into another mystery when the couple discovers a murder victim on their first date. Amanda is debuting a new
mystery series for children. When Andora “Andi” Boggs discovers
proof of another Andora Boggs hidden in a Depression-era trunk,
she determines to find out who she was and what happened to
her in Andi Unexpected (ages 9-12). [Table 9]
Mary Ellis
Judith Fradin
Mary Ellis’ New Beginnings series is about
fresh starts and how faith provides peace
and joy in a turbulent and ever-changing
world. Amy King faces life-altering challenges in Living in Harmony when she
suddenly loses both of her parents in a
house fire. Then in Love Comes to
Paradise, Nora King is torn between
falling in love with an English-leaning
man or committing fully to her Amish
faith. After watching both her sisters get married, Rachel King
yearns for her own new beginning at a Thoroughbred horse stable
in Kentucky in A Little Bit of Charm. Mary Ellis lives in
Medina and will also sign copies of An Amish Family Reunion,
a stand-alone novel about faith and family. [Table 32]
Judy Fradin lives in Illinois and has written many acclaimed non-fiction titles for
young readers. John Price took a chance
at freedom by fleeing to a tolerant community in Ohio and The Price of
Freedom: How One Town Stood
Up to Slavery (ages 5-10) tells how
the townspeople of Oberlin stood up to
slavecatchers in a dramatic showdown,
attempting to rescue Price. 5,000 Miles
to Freedom (ages 10+) and Stolen into Slavery (ages 10+) are
also harrowing tales of the slave experience in America. Through
riveting narrative and eyewitness stories, young readers will learn
what it’s really like to be caught in a Tornado or witness the
explosion of a Volcano (ages 9-12). [Table 35]
7
P.L. Gaus
Jill Hardie
P. L. Gaus illuminates Amish culture in
mystery novels that are as fascinating
as the Amish themselves. Starting with
the first novel, Blood of the Prodigal,
we meet recurring characters Professor
Branden, Sheriff Bruce Roberston, and
Pastor Cal Troyer who work together to
restore justice. In Gaus’ new release, The
Names of Our Tears, Ruth Zook
returns home to Ohio, carrying a heavy
suitcase and a heavier heart. Coerced into transporting drugs, Ruth
retaliates by destroying her illicit burden and pays for it with her life.
Paul lives in Wooster and will sign all eight books in the AmishCountry Mystery series. [Table 3]
Sam is so excited about Christmas! He’s
thinking about his Christmas list and
puzzles over one very mysterious gift: a
sparkly box sitting on the mantel. Sam’s
parents will only tell him that The
Sparkle Box (ages 4+) is a special
gift they will all open together, but that
they need to fill it first. Meanwhile, Sam
and his family give to people in need
throughout the season. Then on Christmas morning, when Sam finally opens the sparkle box, what he
finds inside sheds light on the true meaning of Christmas. Jill
lives in North Canton with her family and hopes that the sparkle
box included with her book will help other families start a new
Christmas tradition in the true spirit of the season. [Table 22]
Geoffrey Girard
Trying to develop a new breed of bioweapons, the Department of Defense
secretly clones the world’s most notorious
murderers, hoping to study their DNA
and isolate a genetic predictor for evil.
But everything changes when the most
dangerous boys are set free by their creator.
Former black ops soldier, Shawn Castillo
is hot on their trail in Cain’s Blood,
but Shawn didn’t count on the quiet
young boy he finds hiding in an abandoned house—a boy who has
just learned he is the clone of Jeffrey Dahmer. Project Cain (ages
13-17) is a thrilling young adult companion to Cain’s Blood, told
from the perspective of a fifteen-year-old boy—who has just learned
that he is the clone of Jeffrey Dahmer. Geoffrey Girard was born in
Germany and currently lives in West Chester, Ohio.[Table 19]
W.H. “Chip” Gross
For nearly two decades, R.T. Stewart
infiltrated poaching rings throughout
Ohio as an undercover wildlife law enforcement officer with the Ohio Dept.
of Natural Resources. As told to Chip
Gross, Poachers Were My Prey: Eighteen Years as an Undercover Wildlife
Officer chronicles Stewart’s many
exciting adventures and will appeal to
readers interested in law enforcement,
wildlife, preservation, hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. Gross
frequently writes on the outdoors and is a seasoned walleye angler.
He covers every aspect of walleye trolling, offering advice on basic
and advanced trolling equipment, choosing bait, and more in
Trolling Big-Water Walleyes. [Table 38]

Karen Harper
Lifelong Ohioan Karen Harper’s new
Home Valley Amish suspense trilogy is now
available in mass market paperbacks, as well
as a new companion novel Upon a Winter’s Night. Readers are introduced
to the fictional setting of Home Valley in
Fall from Pride where an arsonist may
be looking to burn more than just barns.
In Return to Grace, a Halloween
party has a deadly ending and Hannah Esh
is pulled back to her Amish past as the investigation gets underway.
Finally, the arrival of a former Wall Street whistleblower brings a host
of new complications in Finding Mercy when he is relocated to
Home Valley by the witness protection program. [Table 10]
Anna Lee Huber

wherever she goes—this time to Edinburgh. But the city is full of
surprises and in Mortal Arts, Lady Darby faces another deadly mystery and works to prove the innocence of a beloved family
friend and to save the marriage of another. Anna Lee Huber grew
up in rural Ohio and now lives in Indiana. [Table 46]
Ann Freedlander Hunt
Gone But Not Forgotten: A
Freedlander Legacy comprises 105
Katharine Kenah
years of history of the H. Freedlander
Company in Wooster, Ohio. Ann Freedlander Hunt’s great-grandfather, David
Freedlander, traveled to Wooster from
Buffalo, New York by horse and wagon
to begin his entrepreneurship as a pack
peddler in 1884. The original store, a
one-room clothing haberdashery, was
called The Buffalo One Price Clothing House. Ann was inspired
to write this history when the much-beloved department store
was demolished in 2009. [Table 47]
Katharine Kenah was an oceanographer
before starting to write for children. Her
brand-new series for early readers (ages
5-8) features The Saturday Triplets, firstgrade triplets Ana, Bella, and Carlos who
take turns picking an adventure for the
day. Nothing ever goes as planned! Follow
the action with them in Lost in the
Leaf Pile, where they race to rake the
fastest, the best, and biggest leaf pile ever;

Angela Johnson has created a brand-new
world for Lottie to dream in—alongside
a brand-new friend—in Lottie Paris
and the Special Place (ages 4-8).
Lottie Paris has a favorite place: the
library! She loves to go there and read
about space. Carl likes the library, too.
He loves to read about dinosaurs. When
Lottie and Carl meet, they become fast friends, and now Lottie
reads about dinosaurs, and Carl loves space! Angela has received
numerous awards for her work and lives in Kent with her family.
New in paperback, A Certain October (ages 12-16), is a
compelling coming-of-age story about surviving the unimaginable
and adding your own flavor to life. [Table 23]
Carved out of the Northwest Territory,
the state of Ohio has a long and rich history, one that played pivotal roles in every
phase of our nation’s history. Ohio: A
History of the Buckeye State is
the first entirely original and complete
history of Ohio to appear in 25 years.
In it, Professor Kern traces the course of
Ohio’s history, from the earliest geological
periods to the present day. Drawing on
the latest scholarship from history, archaeology, and political science, this comprehensive study presents the most up-to-date, interdisciplinary history of the state currently available. With thematic
chapters weaving together major social, economic, and political
trends over time, Kern presents the full sweep of the history of the
state of Ohio. He is an Associate Professor at Akron U. [Table 43]

Julia Keller was born and raised in Huntington, WV, and worked as a journalist
for The Columbus Dispatch while earning
a doctoral degree in English Literature at
OSU. A Killing in the Hills is her
powerful, intricate fictional debut, featuring a mother and daughter trying to do
right by a town and by each other before
it’s too late. Carla Elkins, daughter of Bell
Elkins, the prosecuting attorney for Raythune County, WV, is a witness to the killing of three elderly men
at a local café. When mother and daughter collaborate to solve the
crime, will their own lives be put in danger? Bell’s new case in Bitter River is a bad one: when a pregnant teenager’s body is found
at the bottom of Bitter River, Bell has some searching to do when it
turns out the teenager didn’t die from drowning. [Table 20]
The character of Johnny Appleseed
stands apart from other frontier heroes
like Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone,
who employed violence against Native
Americans and nature to remake the
West. Creating a startling new portrait
of the eccentric apple tree planter, William Kerrigan carefully dissects the oral
tradition of the Appleseed myth and
draws upon material from archives and
local historical societies across New England and the Midwest.
Johnny Appleseed and the American Orchard is more
than a biography of John Chapman and the story of the Johnny
Appleseed legend, it is a compelling history of life on the frontier. Kerrigan is a professor of American History at Muskingum
University in New Concord, Ohio. [Table 34]

Joy Kiser
J. Patrick Lewis
Joy Kiser is a former librarian at
the Cleveland Museum of Natural
History and last year heralded the
publication of America’s Other
Audubon, a book chronicling the
story of Genevieve Jones and her
family, and reprinting for the first
time the extraordinary lithographs
making up Genevieve’s nineteenthcentury work, Illustrations of the Nests and Eggs of Birds of Ohio.
Images from America’s Other Audubon make up the Nests &
Eggs Notecards featuring six carefully crafted nests and the
colorful and speckled eggs they protect. The companion Bird
Watching and Other Observations Journal is rife with
tips for casual and beginner birders and nature enthusiasts. [Table 14]
In moving verse, Children’s Poet Laureate
J. Patrick Lewis of Westerville gives new
voice to seventeen heroes of civil rights in
When Thunder Comes (ages 4-8).
In Face Bug (ages 4-8), drawings and
photographs are combined with Pat’s sly,
humorous poems to introduce readers to
each of 14 bugs. Animal lovers will also
enjoy the National Geographic Book of
Animal Poetry (ages 5-12) which pairs classic poems with vibrant
animal photography. During the rainy season, when the river rises,
The Good Ship Crocodile (ages 4-8) helps many creatures
cross to the other side, but when the rain stops and the river dries
up, it is the crocodile who needs help getting home. Young readers
and lighthearted adults will love Pat’s amusing poems in If You
Were a Chocolate Moustache (ages 8+). [Table 45]
Lisa Klein
While in London, Will Shakespeare meets
Meg, a tavern maid who pretends to be
Mack, a boy thief. In Love Disguised
(ages 13-17), mistaken identities, love
triangles, and comic villainy combine in a
lively drama that could have sprung from
Shakespeare’s own pen. Lisa Klein lives in
Columbus and is a former English professor. Shakespeare also influences her novel
Ophelia (ages 13-17), and the follow-up,
Lady Macbeth’s Daughter (ages 13-17). In Klein’s historical novels,
Cate is banished to Roanoke Island in Cate of the Lost Colony (ages
12-16), and cousins find themselves on opposing sides in Two Girls
of Gettysburg (ages 12-16). [Table 12]

The Browns have played nearly one
thousand games over the past eight
decades, and The Browns Bible: The
Complete Game-by-Game History
of the Cleveland Browns tells the
tale of each one. Within these pages are
snapshots of the drama inherent in each
contest, from the ultimate highs to the
heartbreaking lows, and the moments
quickly forgotten and those remembered forever. Through individual game stories and box scores, The
Browns Bible narrates the Kardiac Kids and Dog Pound eras and the
heroics of celebrated players of the past unfold. Jonathan Knight has
been writing about northeast Ohio athletics for more than 25 years
and is also the author of Classic Tribe and Classic Cavs, each featuring 50 of the teams’ greatest games. [Table 47]

Five-Star Trails: Columbus is a
brand-new and comprehensive guide to
hiking in northeastern and central Ohio.
Each hike includes detailed landmarks,
flora, fauna, and local history. The hikes
are also rated on their scenery, trail condition, difficulty, appropriateness for children, and solitude. Robert Loewendick’s
decades of experience in Ohio’s outdoors
has helped him gather the most current information to guide the
hiker to that perfect excursion. Best Tent Camping: Ohio reveals
50 sites around Ohio that provide a variety of tent camping opportunities. [Table 16]
From Brecksville author Kylie Logan (who
is known by many names, most recently,
Casey Daniels) comes an exciting new
book-related series featuring a plucky trio
of sleuths—the League of Literary Ladies—
whose first mystery, Mayhem at the
Orient Express, involves the murder
of the owner of a new Chinese restaurant.
Josie Giancola, of Button Holed and Hot
Button, knows her buttons. But in Panic Button when she
comes into contact with a rare charm string, she never imagines it
will lead to murder. Chili Con Carnage launches another new
series this year, where Maxie’s father, the king of the chili cook-off
circuit, has been missing for six weeks. Then, her ex-boyfriend
turns up dead. Maxie needs to find the real killer so that she can
get back to finding her father. [Table 31]

the proud but struggling franchise. Few
teams have risen above years of mediocrity, but the Cleveland Indians in the early 20th century brought the world championship
to their city of passionate fans in a spectacular style that has yet to
be replicated. Scott Longert is a Park Guide for the National Park

Make bedtime memorable and meaningful with Dandi’s special collection
of Bedtime Stories and Prayers
(ages 3-6). I Love You Mommy and
I Love You Daddy board books
(ages 3-6) help children express thanks
to their parents for the loving relationship they share. The Gift of the
Christmas Cookie (ages 4-8) tells a
tender story of giving—not just cookies,
but gifts of the heart that last forever. For teens, Dandi offers The
Silence of Murder (ages 13-17), a mystery of love, secrets,
and silence. She will also sign the four books in the Starlight
Animal Rescue series where troubled animal lovers find salvation
helping to rescue horses, cats, and dogs. Dandi lives in West
Salem amongst her horses, cats, and dogs. [Table 5]
Brian McClellan lives in Cleveland
and has studied writing under Brandon Sanderson and Orson Scott Card.
Promise of Blood is the first installment in The Powder Mage Trilogy, and
it opens in the aftermath of a bloody
coup fought with guns and magic.
Although Tamas’ coup brought bread to
the starving, it also provoked war with
the Nine Nations, internal attacks by
royalist fanatics, and greedy scrambling for money and power by
Tamas’ supposed allies. Promise of Blood takes a thrilling look at
politics, kingdoms, and the retribution that falls swiftly on broken
promises. [Table 33]
Ali Maier
A sister and brother, forced to write during the summer, and share one journal?
Ugh! This is exactly what happens to
10-year-old twins Maggie and Max when
Mom comes up with a plan for the twins
to keep a summer journal. Through their
writing, Maggie and Max find out they
have very different (and hilarious) views
about growing up, family, and life—a
conclusion they only discovered because,
as Max and Maggie say: Mom Made Us Write This in
the Summer (ages 8-12). Ali Maier lives in Strongville and her
journal-style book captures the loving (and not-so-loving) relationship between close siblings and their family. [Table 39]
Mindy McGinnis
From teen librarian and debut author
Mindy McGinnis comes Not a Drop
to Drink (ages 14+), the story of a
not-so-hard to imagine future in which
water is more sacred than gold and
one girl who will do whatever it takes
to defend her pond. When wisps of
smoke appear on the horizon, it can
only mean one thing to Lynn and her
mother: strangers. Will the strangers be
a threat to Lynn’s own survival, or might they join forces to work
together? Lynn’s dangerous and romantic journey for survival in a
frontier-like world will leave readers breathless. Mindy is a graduate of Otterbein University and, having grown up near the woods,
she always wondered if she could survive out there on her own if
the situation ever presented itself. [Table 20]

Orphan Meg Fellowes makes her living
picking pockets—until she steals from the
wrong nobleman. Instead of being sent
to prison as she expected, she’s whisked
away to the court of Queen Elizabeth and
pressed into royal service in the Maids of
Honor, the Queen’s secret society of protectors. Before long, Meg’s investigations
uncover the Queen’s own secrets, and at the
same time, she finds herself growing attracted to the Spanish courtier she is tailing. Danger is lurking around every corner in Maid
of Secrets (ages 13-17), and Meg will be forced to choose among
protecting the crown, her heart, or her own life. [Table 35]
Karen’s interest in history was sparked
in grade school with field trips to Indian
mounds and to the Ohio Historical Society. She enjoys sharing her excitement
about Ohio’s early settlers in her historical
mysteries (all are for ages 9-12). Missing
at Marietta is the first of Karen’s Mysteries
of the Ohio Frontier. Rachel’s change from
wilderness-hater is an exciting journey
through early Ohio in Whispers at
Marietta. In the first book of the Settlers of the Ohio Frontier
series, Conflict at Chillicothe, Joshua Stewart and his family
struggle to survive the dangers of the Ohio River. Then, Joshua
joins the militia with his father and they run into unexpected
danger on the way to the Battle of Blue Licks. [Table 37]

Astronauts, Cannibals, and Other Stupendous Tales, the memoir
of the late Clevelander Larry “Bozo the Clown” Harmon. Not only is
Harmon’s book by turns incredible and hilarious, it’s also an inspirational testament to the power of one man’s positive attitude, dedication, and work ethic—and how he changed the world. [Table 17]
Meyer-Crothers explains precisely how
she has managed to save thousands for her
family of nine by clipping coupons and
using them wisely. Joni teaches readers the
basics of couponing, maximizing your savings, and thinking outside
of the box when it comes to how you shop. Through extreme couponing, Joni has been able to spend $200 for nearly $5,000 worth

about 80 percent of her groceries to local food banks. [Table 22]

A deeply evocative story of ambition and betrayal, The Paris Wife
captures the love affair between Ernest
Hemingway and his first wife Hadley.
After the pair sets sail for Paris, they
become the golden couple in a lively
and volatile group—the fabled “Lost
Generation”—that includes Gertrude
Stein and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Though
deeply in love, the Hemingways are ill prepared for the harddrinking, fast-living, and free-loving lifestyle of Jazz Age Paris. As
Ernest pours himself into his writing and struggles to find the voice
that will earn him a place in history, Hadley strives to hold on to
her sense of self as her roles as wife, friend, and muse become more
challenging. Paula lives in Cleveland and will be on-hand to sign
copies of The Paris Wife from 10:00 am until noon. [Table 3]

David L. Mowery, a native resident of
Cincinnati and a graduate of the University of Cincinnati, has lived at various
points along the path of Morgan’s Raid
for most of his life. A military operation
unlike any other on American soil, Morgan’s Raid was characterized by incredible speed, superhuman endurance, and
innovative tactics. Confederate General
John Hunt Morgan took his cavalry
through enemy-occupied territory in three states in one of the
longest offenses of the Civil War. The effort produced the only
battles fought north of the Ohio River. Morgan’s Great Raid
contains 25 maps and more than 40 illustrations, taking a new

Dara Naraghi & Brent Bowman
C.F. Payne
Dara Naraghi was born in Iran and
graduated from OSU, making Columbus his home. His latest graphic novel is
illustrated by fellow Columbusite Brent
Bowman. In Persia Blues, Minoo Shirazi is a rebellious young Iranian woman
struggling to define herself amid the strict
social conventions of an oppressive regime
and the wishes of an overbearing father.
She is also a free-spirited adventurer in
a fantasy world, a place where aspects of modern America and
ancient Persia meld into a unique landscape. Dara’s other notable
works include the graphic novelization of James Patterson’s teen
series, Witch & Wizard (ages 14+), and Lifelike. [Table 33]

real inspiration for Lois Lane, the template for Superman’s costume, the boys’
unknown lives after they left Superman, including Siegel’s secret work
during World War II, and what exactly happened with the infamous
check for $130 that pulled Superman away from his creators—and
gave control of the character to the publisher. Brad received his PhD
at Case Western Reserve where he currently teaches. He will also sign
his poetry collection, American Mastodon. [Table 15]
Michael J. Rosen lives in Glenford and

Sharon Short
Centerville author Sharon Short’s new
novel is set in the 1950s and features a
pair of siblings yearning to escape the
strictures of their family and their small
Ohio hometown. Donna’s little brother

help him fulfill his quest...and his dream
to actually visit his land. In so doing, she learns to reconnect with
her own dreams and to understand how the unfulfilled dreams of
those around her impacted her family’s life and tragic past. My One

touch of nonfiction to this charming notjust-for-bedtime book. Betsy brings along other children’s favorites,
including the new board book version of Sweet Dreams Lullaby

When the kids are grown, Eloise has plans
to finally start a life that’s hers alone. But
when her mother creates a competition for

to death. Convinced that her friend is
innocent, Bridget sets out to find the
real killer, joining forces with Martha

Rounding out the series that includes
Identifying and Feeding Birds and
Hummingbirds and Butterflies, Bird
Homes and Habitats helps homeowners enhance their backyards even
more with advice on how to provide
shelter and nests for birds. It’s easy
enough to hang a birdfeeder, but there
are plenty of other things that can attract
birds to a landscape—and, in fact, birds
need four essentials: food, water, shelter, and a place to nest. The
more of these elements a yard has, the more attractive it is to birds.
Bill is the longtime editor of Bird Watcher’s Digest and he lives in rural Whipple, Ohio. His new field guide to Midwestern Birds
is a perfect no-nonsense, easy-to-use reference for the 55 most
common bird species in the Midwestern United States. [Table 27]

Franklin Inventions (ages 6-10) gives
young readers a comprehensive look at
the man who gave us the lightning rod,
the harmonica, bifocals, the post office, the first public library, and
so much more. Carmella Van Vleet lives in Lewis Center and loves
science and history and will also sign Explore Ancient Greece and
Seven Wonders of the World (also for 6-10). [Table 38]

Geoff Williams
The storm began March 23, 1913, with
a series of tornadoes. Then the rains
started and the flooding began. It continued for days. It was the nation’s most
widespread flood ever. Geoff details
the incredible story of the flood—its
destruction, its heroes and victims, and
how it shaped America’s natural disaster
policies—in Washed Away: How
the Great Flood of 1913,
America’s Most Widespread Natural Disaster,
Terrorized a Nation and Changed It Forever. A longtime newspaper reporter and journalist, Williams lives less than an
hour away from the Great Flood’s epicenter in Dayton. [Table 27]
James A. Willis
When it comes to chronicling the
haunted history and supernatural mysteries of Ohio, there is no author more
knowledgeable on the subject than James
Willis, founder of The Ghosts of Ohio,
a paranormal research organization.
The spirits of Native Americans, Civil
War soldiers, and alcohol-smuggling
gangsters are just a few of the undead supernatural entities that still roam Ohio.
The Big Book of Ohio Ghost Stories offers an eclectic
mix of more than 75 of the best, most spine-tingling accounts of
Ohio hauntings. Strange people and unusual sites abound in the
Buckeye State and make up every page of Weird Ohio, the biggest,
most bizarre collection of Ohio stories ever assembled! [Table 19]
Doyle Yoder
Doyle Yoder lives in Millersburg and has
been photographing the Holmes County
sights and citizens for over 25 years. A
self-taught photographer, his new Amish
Country Calendar 2014 offers
breathtaking scenes of Ohio’s Amish
community. Doyle’s 1,000-piece jigsaw
puzzles are fun for the whole family, ages
12 and up. Colorful Curve features
breathtaking fall scenery while Working
on the Farm shows a lovely winter scene. Hanging dresses up to dry
under the grape vine is a convenient location in the Clothes Vine
image. Stutzman’s Crossing Covered Bridge is a new bridge, named
after Holmes County’s first Amish settler Jonas Stutzman. A farmer
returns home in Milk Hack and Master’s Bouquet captures a twoseated buggy passing a majestically grown rose bush. [Table 8]
Buckeye Book Fair
Supports Literacy in Ohio
The annual Buckeye Book Fair brings Ohio authors together with the reading public and raises money for libraries
and adult literacy programs. Created as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization, Buckeye Authors’ Book Fair Committee Inc
was incorporated in 1987. From providing seed money
for programs designed to foster and encourage a love of
reading, to providing funds for enhancing and updating
book collections in classrooms and libraries, the Buckeye
Book Fair has awarded $205,491.96 in 256 grants since
its inception.
Literacy Grants Awarded
Six literacy grants totaling $3,000 are being spent by
Ohio schools and libraries at this year’s Fair. Last year’s
grants were awarded at the November 3, 2012 Buckeye
Book Fair. The recipients were:
• Crestview High School (Ashland)
• Slate Hill Elementary (Columbus)
• Wayne High School (Huber Heights)
• Clark County Juvenile Detention Center (Springfield)
• Northern Local Elementary Schools (Thornville)
• Franklin Township 6th grade students (Wooster)
Apply for a Grant
Librarians and literacy program administrators may inquire at the Book Fair Information Table to receive a 2014
grant application. Grants of $500 in books are awarded to
enhance book collections; or gift certificates totaling $500
are awarded to individuals of classrooms and literacy programs for the promotion of reading.
Why Is There an Admission Charge?
The Buckeye Book Fair has certain fixed expenses that
must be met each year. Your $2 admission helps offset
these costs so that more funds can be made available for the
Buckeye Book Fair’s grants for literacy program.
No Strollers or Home Books
In order to keep aisleways clear, please do not bring baby
strollers into the Book Fair.
Patrons will NOT be permitted to enter the Book Fair
with books brought from home to be signed. To keep the
lines moving for paying customers whose purchases make
the Book Fair possible, only books sold during the Book
Fair will be signed by authors.
Thank you for your understanding.
Submit a Book
Ohio authors are welcome to submit a book to be
considered for possible inclusion in the Buckeye Book Fair.
Send a review copy of your book to the address provided
below, or check out our website www.BuckeyeBookFair.com/
pages/submissions for more information.
