There’s no way around it. We have serious energy challenges ahead.
When we’ve let large corporations solve those challenges in the
past, the results benefited those corporations, not society and the
environment. When people demand cleaner energy, the natural gas
industry rushes to re-brand its product as a “clean” fuel. When
people demand renewable energy, the oil industry scours the earth
in search of more oil while boasting about all the jobs they’ll create.
Then when the renewable energy industry tries do the right thing,
they charge forward the only way they know how: building up
centralized, massive wind, hydro and solar installations that can
endanger fragile ecosystems and bleed money away from local
communities to distant shareholders.
Where does this leave us?
There’s a better way: community power. Renewable energy projects
can be built, owned, and operated locally. They can be designed for
our needs, make use of locally available resources, and reinvest the
profits into our neighborhoods – all while getting us off fossil fuels.
Already, countless examples of community wind turbines, rooftop
solar panels, and even small-scale hydropower projects exist around
the world.
