2010 - 2011 Annual Giving Report
From the Board President
The past year was full of an unusual degree of turmoil and volatility: in the economy, in global
politics, and in the weather. In the midst of this maelstrom, the Library held a steady course, and
moved forward. Our progress was only made possible by a remarkable degree of collaboration among
all the stakeholders dedicated to moving the Library into a new century. We were able to tap into the
tremendous well of knowledge, energy, and skill that lies in our community, and in the Library’s staff.
Our director, Maxine Bleiweis, exemplifies passion for the Library. In well-deserved recognition of
her work, Maxine was hailed by the CLA as the state’s Outstanding Librarian of the Year.
As we keep a sharp eye on online developments, we must never lose sight of what remains one of our
most important missions: allowing people to connect with one another. Every day, we strive to balance
and blend the best of what the Library is already known for, while embracing the potential that future
developments promise. I find it especially energizing to be part of this excitement. Together, as a
community, we will meet that challenge.
Eduardo Andrade, President, Board of Trustees
From the Friends President
Free and open to all! Just knowing that this is the mission of the Library says it all. Free. . .and open
to all ideas, points of view and uses. Depending on the moment, the Library is a theater, concert hall,
Internet café, study hall, business office, resource for jobseekers, and a haven for readers and thinkers. What’s even more inspiring is the fact that the Library has all this and is up-to-date, even ahead
of the curve, in anticipating what people want next.
The Library can do so much for so many because so many see themselves as part of it, and they are!
Thank you to everyone who supports the Library, each in their own way, keeping it free and open to
all, and to all future possibilities.
Robin Berggren, President, Friends of the Library
From the Library Director
Good public libraries step up to the needs of their community, and this past year we have listened to the
local fallout from a weak national economy. Our response? A wildly popular Jobseekers program, the
third standing-room-only forum on the state of the economy by our own David Komansky and Marc
Lasry, and our open doors to the multitude of people who use our space daily as a mobile office.
We are here as a resource and refuge for navigating difficult times. More people are using the Library
than ever before — for work, for learning, for creating, and for relaxation and enrichment. We are
changing with the times; we lend e-readers, laptops, and iPads. We launched a new website and new
services such as text-a-librarian. We post and tweet and recommend, but still show favorite movies and
host book clubs and read aloud to children. We are here for you, your community campus, open to all.
Maxine Bleiweis, Library Director

The Library is open
to all…thanks to you.
The Westport Public Library is the
town commons, open to everyone
from toddlers to retirees, open for
all to come together to connect,
create, learn, and work.
We have grown into an essential
community prize, evolving into
an even more vital public hub
because you understand the value
of generosity, collaboration, and
involvement.
You are the foundation, donating
your time, interest, and resources.
You provide the speakers, the music,
the art, and the energy.
You are all friends, and the Library
would not be what it is without you.
For that, we are deeply grateful.
On the cover Pageant of Literature by Robert Lambdin. The cover image is part
of a 77-year-old mural in The Great Hall that illustrates the convergence of literature and history,
displaying an array of famous characters from Pocahontas to Huck Finn coming together in a
celebration of art. The antique treasure, commissioned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as
part of a program to keep artists working during the Great Depression, dwelt in the foyer of the
Saugatuck Elementary School for 57 years before it was restored and moved to the Library in
1992, where it remains for all to cherish. See pages 12-13 for the History Panel of the mural.

Nina Sankovitch
Paz Meyers
The Library has hosted the extremely
popular Kids Summer Reading Club
for decades, but the start of Nina
Sankovitch’s book chat was the first
club for adults. It was inspired by the
publication of her book, Tolstoy and
the Purple Chair, a moving memoir
chronicling her year of reading a
book a day as a way of coping with
her sister's death. Participants in
the group discuss which books they
should read.
“The book chats became a community
experience, and have become a part
of my life,” said Nina, who lives in
Westport with her husband and four
children. “I meet new people, people
I wouldn’t have known otherwise.
It has made me realize how multidimensional Westport is.”
Isabel Gordon
Fourth grader Paz Meyers is very
comfortable in the Library. Coming
from a family of library lovers, he
started volunteering along with his
mom, Heidi, at the Friends Summer
Book Sale. Dubbing his work
“library camp,” he arranges books
in the Children’s Tent. The job has
turned into a regular gig; he now
lends a hand in the toddler area of the
Children’s Library. Heidi is thrilled
about how excited he is about helping
out, “taking care of things so others
can enjoy them.”
Isabel Gordon reads books on her
iPad, swims every day, and runs
a book club. She’s 95. A former
copywriter in New York City, she
moved to Westport with her husband
Richard after World War II, and
Joe Pucci
started illustrating children’s books.
One of them was The Shadow Book,
which became a classic. Some of the
photographs from the book are part of
the town’s permanent art collection.
When Joe Pucci isn’t running,
biking, and swimming as a triathlete,
he might be found at the Library
sitting in a comfy chair overlooking
the river. A financial advisor and
member of the Library’s development
committee, Joe remembers bringing
his two children to Itty Bittys on
Saturday mornings years ago. He has
always been a Library patron, and
sees himself as an ambassador. “It’s
so important that the Library is a
first-class institution,” he says. “Not
only for my family and me, but for
others as well.”
The phrase Open To All is more mission statement than
slogan, signifying how the Library is open to all users,
ideas, points of view, uses, and technologies.
FYI Westport Public Library is the busiest library
in New England in daily transactions.

OPEN to All Ideas
The McManus Room is the Library’s
heartbeat, the place people come to
share ideas and listen to the viewpoints of others. Last year saw a
dazzling array of speakers discussing
a diverse range of topics. Carnegie
fellow Karim Sadjapour explained
Iran’s complex political system, and
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist
Steve Coll examined
U.S. policies
in Afghanistan and Pakistan and the
effect they have
on national security.
The director of Yale’s cardiology
department, John Elefteriades, MD,
told us about the ethics issues of
organ transplants. David Goldhill
shared his Atlantic Monthly essay
examining the state of American
healthcare before President Obama’s
bill was passed.
The McManus Room is
the pulse of the Library…
Finance experts David Komansky
and Marc Lasry translated the latest
Wall Street issues and what they
mean for Westporters. Publisher
Simon Boughton talked about
winning a Caldecott award for
A Sick Day for Amos McGee, and
Alex Ross took us inside our heads
when we listen to music. Nationally
known local tech experts, including
Richard Fritsch, David Pogue, and
Irving Wladawsky-Berger, shared
their know-how about e-gadgets and
the cloud that powers them. And we
were enlightened by legends in the
arts: actor Christopher Plummer,
dancer Jacques D’Amboise, and
artists Maira Kalman and Rick
Meyerowitz.
Over a thousand programs for
adults, teens, and children were
offered, from the Rabbit Hill
Festival of Literature to teen
animé nights, and an airing of the
Royal Wedding. WestportREADS
invited patrons to contemplate the
devastation of New Orleans after
Hurricane Katrina through Dave
Eggers’ Zeitoun, a true story of
a Muslim-American from Syria
who lived in the Big Easy with
his family. Art lovers were treated
to a refurbished McManus Room,
with its unique display of “Black
& White Works on Paper” by
Westport artists.

July 2010 At the Friends Annual Book Sale, over 300
volunteers unpacked 3,500 cartons, an equivalent of
100,000 books!
FY I There were 650 people in line on Saturday morning,
which was a new record. A total of 88,800 books sold.

“as you like it”
You wanted healthy,
organic food, and that’s
what is now in the café,
along with the best Texas
Slammer and Chai Tea
Latte anywhere around.
Plus, amazing whole grain
muffins, fresh-baked
cupcakes, and a selection
of sandwiches from
Oscar’s Deli and The
Organic Market. Nearly
every item in the café is
either produced locally
or provided by a local
vendor, and all the plates,
napkins, and cold cups are
recyclable. All of this is
now available seven days
a week.
OPEN to All Uses
In addition to regular well-attended
Jobseekers programs, the Library
offers one-on-one free sessions with
executive coach Steve Temlock,
who works with individuals to
strategize and energize employment
searches. A consultant with a 30-year
track record of success in corporate
management, Steve wanted to give
back to the community by helping
professionals find work, so he
volunteers, helping people network,
think creatively, and understand the
perspective of senior management
in corporations.
The Library has become a coveted
site for the Staples High School
internship program, which brought
in four seniors to work in various
parts of the Library. Ben Meyers
was one of them, and he left
knowing how to run a small café.
He said he wanted to do something
different from what he did at school.
“I wanted a break, to just learn about
making coffee. But it became so
much more than that. I learned all
about the procedures manual, sales,
and inventory. It was a pint-sized
version of running a business.”
Beyond books and information,
many patrons are drawn to the
Library for its excellent and varied
art exhibits and music programs.
Among the highlights of the
year’s offerings in art were “Chas
Addams: Favorite Haunts” and
“Cuba 2010, An Impression,”
photographs by David Kalman.
In music, the programs featured a
range of performers, from electric
blues violinist Heather Hardy to
Espiritu Andino and Sue Matsuki.

August 2010 Summer reading now includes both
teen and adult programs.
FYI Children read 18,150 books during the
Summer Reading program.

OPEN to All Technologies
An important part of the
Library mission is to provide
the most up-to-date ways for
people to read and learn.
That includes Kindles, pre-loaded
with a wide assortment of titles,
which patrons may check out for a
week, and special “travel Kindles”
for people to take with them on
trips. Assistance is available for
those who would like to learn
how to use these e-readers. And
thanks to the Nancy J. Beard
Foundation, patrons can check
out a MacBook Pro for use within
the Library, a service which has
saved a few people from frantic
trips to the office. Several other
e-services have increased in
popularity this past year, including
Rocket Languages, an interactive
online program for learning eleven
languages including French,
Italian, Hindi, Chinese, Arabic,
and American Sign Language.
Freegal, a service for downloading
free and legal music, continues
to grow every month. Westport
cardholders are entitled to three
downloads a week. The same
company that developed Freegal
announced in June that the
Library would be one of just ten
sites in the nation to pilot a new
model for lending e-books called
Freading. Library patrons will
be able to download books for a
two-week loan with a two-week
renewal option. The real attraction
of Freading is the ability to have
multiple users simultaneously check
out the same book.
John Blossom and Peter Propp…
know them? Seen them around the
Library? The Westport residents
had tweeted with each other for
years, and finally met at a Library
roundtable about future technology
strategy for libraries. An idea was
born, and they now create and
produce their vlog (video blog)
Ten Minute Strategies, a series of
videos about business strategies,
at the Library.
“The library is a small business
incubator,” said Propp, a marketing
strategy consultant on mobile and
social media. “It’s a place to be
productive.” Blossom, a veteran
content industry analyst, agrees.
“ One of the most important
roles for a library today is
the role of the commons; it
is the town green and a
valuable public resource.
It’s a great place to network.”

help by donating funds, as they
have yearly for decades, because
they believe the Library is an
essential part of their community.
And there are those who stretch
their contributions by giving
generously through stock gifts and
corporate matching fund programs.
The Library is what it is today
because of Friends. Thank you so
much for your time and generosity.
