School of
Thought
The Westport Library is dedicated to the
principle that learning and discovery are
the birthright of every individual. Like all
educational institutions, our goal is to
nurture a population of thinkers, seekers,
artists and visionaries. We are committed
to providing a welcoming environment that
offers free and open access to information
for all. The Library is far more than a place of
books, movies and computers. It is Westport’s
center of intellectual and creative inquiry.
MORRIS K . JESUP (1830–1908)
Born into a prosperous Westport family, Morris Ketchum Jesup was
a man with strong civic pride and a keen sense of community. His
commitment to universal education and passion for scientific study were
a driving force behind his funding of the first Westport Library in 1908.
His thoughts on philanthropy are summed up in the following words:
“Giving wisely and with heart…always brings
a return of joy and peace.”
Your support of the Library
is greatly appreciated!
1
LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT
On behalf of the Library Board of Trustees,
I am proud to present the fiscal 2014 – 2015 Annual Report.
This report comprehensibly illustrates the solid work, effort
and creative spirit of the Library, its staff and the support of
the community. This year, the Library was able to expand
its services, offer new technologies and provide thousands
of children and adults with a wide array of programs and
wonderful opportunities for civic engagement.
We were delighted to hire Bill Harmer,
director of the Chelsea District Library
in Michigan, to serve as Executive
Director, replacing Maxine Bleiweis
following her 17 years of exemplary
service. Bill is an innovative leader
with an impressive background and
the energy and enthusiasm to take our
Library through the next phase of its development. Even
with our many successes and reputation for excellence,
standing still is not an option. Our strategic plan calls for us
to transform the Library into an even greater destination
for learning and exploration.
The Westport Library has been blessed with wonderful
volunteers, a dedicated staff, generous donors and
community leaders who support the Library’s mission.
The Board and I remain committed to ensuring that the
Library evolves to meet the needs of the community.
Your continued support is more necessary than ever and
is greatly appreciated.

“When we moved to
Westport in 1966, the library
was already a vibrant place.
It has evolved into the
cultural and social center of
Westport where we study
French, teach writing, enjoy
robots, munch croissants
and, oh yes, take out books.
We look forward to helping
the library realize its plans
for the future.”

Learning from
One Another
Cooperative learning brings people from all backgrounds and
stages of life together to share ideas, discover new interests and
master new skills. On any day at the Library, you might find a
sixth grader teaching a retired executive about 3D printers or a
grandmother sharing a bit of town history with a teenager. Twice
weekly, the Tech Help staff assists hundreds of patrons with
their smartphones and tablets. This year, our humanoid robots
visited community youth programs in Norwalk and Bridgeport
to show and tell how children can get involved in science and
technology. Robotics training at the Library attracted over
1,200 attendees.

Fostering a love of reading and developing
skills for critical and creative thinking is at
the heart of a multitude of programs that
support childhood literacy. The Library
focuses not only on young minds, but offers
sessions in movement, dance, yoga and
the unique opportunity to practice reading
aloud to a four-legged friend. Minecraft,
a three-dimensional building video game,
attracted hundreds of young players and
the annual Teen Photography Contest
drew more than one hundred submissions.

A Campus at
the Center of the
Community
is a civic gathering place that connects people, ideas and experiences.
12
The McManus Room is
frequently a standing-roomonly venue for lectures and
performances. Film series
and family movie sing-alongs
attract people of all ages.
Ever-changing art exhibits bring
fine art and photography from
around the world to the center
of the Library experience.
The popular WestportREADS
program brought friends,
educators, poets and even
knitters together to explore
James Joyce’s Dubliners with
group discussions, lectures and
dining-out events around town.
Visitors to our downtown
waterfront location find
outdoor space for recreational
use as well as stunning places
to read along the river.
Many people stopped to
purchase gifts from the
Library Store or grab a snack
at the Library Café. Patrons
ordered over 10,000 cold
drinks and over 17,000 hot
beverages. Now that’s a lot
of latté!

Annual Book Sales
Book lovers and bargain hunters turned
out in large numbers to the Library’s
three book sales — made possible through
generous donations from the community
and the help of numerous volunteers. This
year’s summer sale featured a remarkable
collection of post-war jazz records and a
rare Mickey Mouse book by Disney.

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Now is a thrilling time for the Library as we move
forward to respond to the need for reimagined
space and essential upgrades to the building’s
physical infrastructure, making the Library safer
and more accessible for everyone. It is obvious
that this well-thought out plan is the product of
creative input from the Library’s stakeholders.
The current plans for the transformation of the
building will support its ever–expanding role in this community.
The best is yet to come.
I would like to extend my deepest thanks and gratitude to the
remarkable staff and to the Board of Trustees for their collective
efforts in helping us achieve extraordinary programming and initiatives.
Because of the support of our patrons and contributors, this Library
will continue to be a vital civic resource and community treasure.
Let’s go to the Library!
William H. Harmer
