Community Services Committee
I am happy to announce that the Board of Trustees
of India Association of Indianapolis has approved the
formation of a Community Services Committee (CSC).
The goal of this committee will be to pursue initiatives
designed to increase the visibility of IAI both within
the local Indian community and on a wider scale, in the
local Central Indiana community.
This goal is to be acheived by 1. Expanding our volunteer services programs
2. Providing regular workshops and seminars on
topics of high interest to the community.
3. Enhancing our website to a more interactive level.
4. Creating a database of professionals and
volunteers to interact with those seeking assistance
and many other such initiatives.
The committee is being formed at this time and you
will soon start to see information on expanded volunteer opportunities and programs of interest.
If you have a strong interest in this agenda and
would like to be part of the committee or volunteer
pool, please contact :

Tsunami Relief Efforts: Update
The Tsunami Relief Committee is pleased to inform the members of
IAI that we have so far collected $37477.61 ($30244 towards direct
contribution to IAI funds and another $7233.61 towards the American
Red Cross). A total of $19,233.61 was presented to the Red Cross
(on the Republic day function) towards the immediate relief efforts.
The remainder ($18244) and additional donations will be channeled
towards the needs of the “Tsunami Orphans” specifically in India.
We are in the process of identifying organization(s) that are
efficient in completing these goals.
Although, we are very pleased with your support so far, we would
like to remind you that this is going to be a long-term effort and the
magnitude of damage is enormous. Your continued support is quite
vital. The TRC, IAI, and the IAI board gratefully acknowledge the
following donors.
Sincerely yours,
Srinivasan Chandrasekhar and Venkat Ishwar

Let us pass along Indian-American values
Ram S. Ravindran
We are either Indian immigrants or the first generation
American citizens of Indian heritage. Our children who are
born and raised in the US are Indian-Americans. We raise
them as the way we were brought up by our parents. Since
they are going to be living in this country, shouldn’t they have
American values? Only if they possess American values,
they will feel like all-American kids. Having not been raised
in this country ourselves, how can we teach them American
values? A compromise would be to teach them both…meaning
the best of Indian and American values. If that be the case,
one might ask, “what specifically are Indian values and what
are American values?”
In spite of multitude of differences among us, we hold on to
certain common Indian values. They are: valuing education,
respecting teachers and elders, not engaging in pre-marital or
extra-marital sex, not encouraging single momhood, being
more tolerant of our spouses, not resorting to divorce easily,
being loyal to the family, enjoying spending time with the
family, being conscious of our duties and responsibilities,
worshipping some form of God at home, living a thrifty life and
respecting authority figures. Yes, we should attempt to
inculcate the above good values in our children. At the same
time we need to recognize the bad values that are passed
along to the next generation Indians in India as well as here.
These include being prejudicial, superstitious, isolationistic,
not believing in one’s ability to make changes, being very
tolerant of various injustices and not doing anything about it,
lack of community (not caste or religion) consciousness and
not outwardly friendly and mingle with others.
Let us look at some of the good American values. I would cite
them to include: respecting manual work, being practical, be
more of a problem solver, being passionate about work and
taking pride in the work they do, pursuing various forms of
human endeavor, pursuing a career that is deep inside their
hearts (than following what is safe and secure), following
rules and regulations (than simply fearing authority), valuing
privacy, cherishing and fighting for personal rights and
privileges, giving any human being some courtesy, being
involved in various organizations (team, church, hobby clubs,
schools, colleges) being generous to church, schools and
colleges. Like in Indian values there are some bad American
values like focusing on things other than education in schools
and colleges, excessive pursuit of happiness, somewhat being
self-centered. We should make sure that they don’t fall prey
to those values either. It is not easy to be a parent. It is not easy
to teach American values when we were not raised here.
However, we can attempt to teach our kids the best of both
the values and truly make them really Indian-Americans! D

India Community Center
4420 W. 56th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46254
The board of trustees of India Association of
Indianapolis would like to bring to your kind notice the
following changes instituted by ICC to serve our community
members and renters better.
• As you have already seen, we have changed the
flooring in the entrance, in the kitchen, and in the small
hall. This has taken the ambience of ICC to a higher
level.
• On the same note, we are on a sprint to fix some of the
other issues in ICC so that our renters would not be left
in the cold.
• We have also converted the small carpeted hall to a
well furnished recreation room.
• We are also re-enforcing the doors and providing
separate locks to the halls in ICC to help our renters
help us manage the center in a better way.
• The rooms available for being rented are defined as the
Main hall, the Small hall, the Kitchen, and the Recreation
room. The renting of the whole facility does not
include the Recreation room.
• Kitchen is available to be rented for any event on days
prior to the event day.
• To make sure that the center and its renters are safe and
have a good time during an event, we are having an
armed security guard during the events that go beyond
6PM. With the winter days being short, we do believe
that you would appreciate the extra security provided
to you and your event attendees.
• The locks to the center are being changed. If you have
a key to the center, please let us know. We will evaluate
to see if you should really have a key and if needed, we
will give you a new key.
To enable us to serve you better and implement these
changes, we have to make the following adjustments:
• The renting method has been changed for monthly
arrangements. Instead of quarterly or semi-annual
billing, you will be billed quarterly in advance.
• If you are going to have an event in the evening going
beyond 6PM, you will have to pay a security guard fee
of $25 per hour.
• All the renters have to complete our application form
and submit it with an advance deposit to the administrator
with in two weeks of initial booking.
• We require that you pay the full rent one month in
advance to the event. Once your booking is confirmed,
you will be sent an invoice for the total amount of the
cost minus the advance deposit. Please make sure that
the rent is paid with in 30 days before the date of the
event to avoid cancellation and forfeiture of the advance
payment.
• Before you get the key to the center, you are required
to pay a damage/cleaning security deposit of $500. At
the time the key is returned, the $500 deposit will be
returned if no damage is present either inside or outside
the center and the facility is left clean inside and
outside, and the facility was used in
adherence to the terms and condition of
the contract. In case of a dispute, the
determination of the Board of Trustees
will be final and binding on the renter.
• If you are using ICC to store any of your
association’s property, we might have to
negotiate a proper place for it than where
it is stored now.
We appreciate your continued patronage
of ICC. We believe that with these changes,
we can serve you better. To help you in
your booking, you will be given a copy of
rental rules and rental information with the
application form.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I
thank you for your continued patronage of
ICC facilities.
Sincerely,
Subhash Mahajan, Chairman
Board of Trustees

Bangalore 2004: Impressions
of an ex-resident
By Melkote Ramaswamy, Ph. D. (Part2)
The affluent class is becoming aware of diet and
exercise. I saw several women in saris doing aerobics at
a public park in Kamalanagar at 6: 30 AM. The park had
a nicely laid out perimeter strip which was used by
walkers and joggers. I subsequently saw similar parks in
Jayanagar and elsewhere in Bangalore. I saw ads that
guaranteed weight loss and incentives such as lose 10
kg’s for the price of 9. BMI (Body Mass Index) has
entered the native vocabulary!
Coffee, tea and badam milk are served steaming hot,
least worried about McDonald-type law suits. As a matter
of fact, people expect it. Some servings are as small as 20
ml. Even in buffet-style service, coffee and tea are served
at the table and waiters are eager to bring any item on the
buffet to you.
Train reservations are streamlined and can be done
online. There are special counters for senior citizens
(lumped with Freedom Fighters and Disabled) and a
separate counter for ladies. Air conditioning in Chair cars
and sleeper compartments is very effective. Ticket on
express trains such as Shatabdi includes snacks. Coffee
and tea are served in disposable paper cups. Broad gauge
is replacing meter gauge, while some hilly sectors continue
to run on narrow gauge. The railway time table is a fine
piece of publication and contains valuable information to
tourists—local and foreign. Strangely. reservation charts
list names of passengers along with their ages! By the
way, Senior citizens enjoy huge discounts on train fares,
among other things.
Air travel is beginning to compete with trains. Air
Deccan was promoting a fare of Rs. 500 for Bangalore to
Delhi flights! Passengers are mostly under 30—a contrast
to the over 50 phenomenon prior to the software
revolution.
The sari is alive and well, especially among women
over 30. There are numerous sari shops all over Bangalore.
What is new is the facility to exchange old sari for a new
one. We saw one such in Malleswaram. Seen as often is
salwar-kameez. With the 15-30 age group, anything goes
within acceptable limits. Temples are crowded more than
ever and cultural activities and religious discourses are
dime a dozen, especially during festival season. We were
there during Ganesha festival and Navarathri and on a
given day, I had a choice of 10 music concerts and 6
religious discourses. The pomp and pageantry was
unparalleled. Loud speakers are generously used and are
accepted as a way of life.
In the US, most festivals are relegated to weekends—
hardly, if ever celebrated on the actual day, thus losing
quite a bit of impact.
13
Cinemas are back in full swing and run to packed
houses.
Even and smooth sidewalks are hard to come by.
Sidewalks are partly taken over by vendors (in spite of
police crackdown). MG Road and Brigade Roads in
Bangalore appeared to be somewhat of an exception.
People have no choice but to walk on the street and share
the road with vehicles.
City buses continue to be crowded with people lining
up before the bus arrives and abandoning queues when it
arrives. Men and women rush separately! Taxis are easy
to get. City Taxi service is a great convenience.US style
department stores are springing up. At Nilgiri’s in
Malleswaram, we could see several US brand products.
Coffee Day is emerging as the Starbucks counterpart
GE has an amazing R&D facility the like of which is
hard to find even in the U.S. The Satya Sai Baba hospital
next to GE is an architectural masterpiece.
I was surprised to see a Taekwando class in session in
Malleswaram.
Bangalore now has probably as many cars on the street
as cycles at one time. There are as many brands of
automobiles as in USA. US companies have unique
versions (Ford Ikon, GM’s Optra). Hyundai has Santro.
Mercedes Benz C-class, Honda’s’ Accord and Toyota’s
Corolla and Camry are making waves as luxury cars.
Incidentally, British cars have virtually disappeared. Most
cars have air conditioning, and automatic transmission is
just coming in. Many have diesel options. Jeeps and
SUV’s (Toyota’s Qualis is in the preferred list) are slowly
creeping in. We liked Tata’s Indica. Maruti’s Wagon R
with its extra head room is catching on. Seatbelts are
required for driver and front seat passenger.
Car buying is becoming easier and more affordable.
You can make a modest down payment and pay the
balance in installments over 7 years. Banks are eager to
make loans. Certified used vehicles costing lot less than
new cars are creating a new market. I saw one such
buying event in Malleswaram that attracted a large number
of prospects.
Speed bumps are designed to slow down traffic flow,
but pose a hazard especially at nights. Even major roads
like Kuvempu Road in Rajajinagar have several of these.
Stop signs seem to have disappeared from some
intersections in Malleswaram.
Right now, petrol is available freely, but may need to
be rationed if the number of vehicles grows at the current
rate. Only one grade is sold.
Power interruptions are routine and for extended
periods—both scheduled and un-scheduled. Commercial
outfits have UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) and if
you were to shop in Commercial Street when the power
is out you are in for a sound barrage. During a classical
music concert I attended in Malleswaram, power went off
for nearly 30 minutes and half the audience left. D

Thirty four years ago
54 of you and many more
responded to nation’s call of duty
and put your lives on the line
to defend the nation,
our pride, our freedom
against an enemy
fought with valor and bravery
defeated the enemy
made us secure and proud
all else returned home
but left you behind
we celebrated the victory
with wine and dine
while you were braving torture and crime
could hear your screams and crying
received your letters
got all your messages
you waited
for us to take you home
but we were too busy
sorry, we had no time
we let you down
we let you down

A Prayer When It Looks Like
You Have Failed
God, are you trying to tell me something?
For:
Failure doesn’t mean, I’m a failure
It does mean, I haven’t yet decided.
Failure doesn’t mean, I have accomplished nothing.
It does mean, I have learned something.
Failure doesn’t mean, I have been a fool.
It does mean I had enough faith to experiment.
Failure doesn’t mean I’ve been disgraced.
It does mean, I dare to try.
Failure doesn’t mean I don’t have it.
It does mean, I have to do something in a different way.
Failure doesn’t mean I am inferior.
It does mean, I am not perfect.
Failure doesn’t mean I’ve wasted my life.
It does mean I have an excuse to start over agin.
Failure doesn’t mean I should give up.
It does mean I should try harder.
Failure doesn’t mean I’ll never make it.
It does mean I need more patience.
Failure doesn’t mean you have abandoned me.
It does mean you must have a better “DEAL”
Submitted by Dr. Mohini Ahuja
