thepastfourorĮveyears.Maybetheducks(andlackofhunters)wasrelated
totheweather,whichturnedpreƩynastyforawhilewithlightning,thunder,
fairlyhighwindgusts,andpelƟngrain.ButaŌerthesquallspassedthrough,
thesuncameoutforabitforourboatridehome.AŌercleaningapileof
ducksandeaƟngabigbowlofhomemadechilifordinner,weallagreeditwas
apreƩyspectacularday.

toputonthiseventforthesecondyearinarow.Weare
alreadylookingforwardtodoingitagainnextyear.
Allinall,wehad38adultsand41youthsaƩendthe
event,andpartofthemhadalreadygonehunƟngthat
morningand/orwereplanningtogooutthataŌernoon.
Whiletheweatherwasgreatfortheeventitwasnotreally
goodhunƟngweather—89andsunny!!!
WaterfowlProspects Thereshouldbelotsofopenwateravailable.
PotholesReservoirisaddingaboutone(1)footperdaythe
last10daysastheirrigaƟonseasonwindsdown.Accessto
thebackbaysandpotholesshouldbecomeeasier.Ifyou
boatondeeperwaterpleaseuseyourpersonalŇoataƟon
devices(PFD’s,akaLifeJackets).Unfortunatelywehavehad
two(2)unnecessarydrowningsonPotholesthisyearbecause
thefolkswerenotwearingPFD’s.
TheweatherintheareaissƟllhotandsunnywitha
fullmoonatnightsoĮeldhunƟngwillprobablybepreƩy
slowwiththebirdsfeedingearlyandlateintheday.

RidgeĮeldNaƟonalWildlifeRefuge(NWR)WorkParty
OnSaturdaySeptember27thhuntercheckstaƟon
volunteerDaveLescalleetandwifeCindy,alongwiththe
USFWSParkRangerJosieFinleygreetedthevolunteersfor
adayofblindcleaningandrefurbishing.DaveisareƟred
federalwildlifeenforcementoĸceranddonateshisƟme
runningthehuntercheckstaƟonatRidgeĮeld.With23
willingworkersthegroupsetouttopreparetheRefugefor
thenewhuntseason.
WereplacedthehunƟngstoolsinthenewpitblind
#12thatwedonatedlastyear.Thesmallerstoolswillallow
moremobilityintheblindandshouldbeabeƩerĮtforthe
hunters.Thelidsonpitblind#5hadrustedoutandwere
replacedwithlidsfabricatedbyKirkBensonforhissenior
highschoolshopproject.Wewereabletoquicklycamo
theboxblindswithRealGrasspanels.EricAndersonand
otherRefugestaīhavekeptthereplacementpumps
runningduringhighƟdeforthelastseveralweeks.They
havehadtostartandshutdowntheauxiliarypumpsystem
atallhoursofthedayandnight.Theirworktoprovide
waterinspiteoftheundergroundpowerlinefailurehas

Itallcametogetheron27Septemberaswehad16
volunteersandmembersshowuptogotowork.Alsohad
thepleasureofworkingwiththeHostsandCrewfromTV’s
WaterFowlEvoluƟon.Notonlyweretheyhardworkers
andgotrightin,theyreallyhelpedoutinmovingthe
chipperaroundandgeƫngtrucksunstuck!Iwon’tsayany
namesnow,butifitsurvivestheediƟngroomyouwillbe
abletoseeitinanepisodestarƟnginJanuary2015onthe
PursuitChannel.
