Each year the Fringe Festival employs over 50
individuals - we like to think of ourselves as job
creators. The full time staff of Know Theatre would
like to give a big THANK YOU to all of the venue techs,
box office staff, jury, managers and everyone who
help us make this Festival great. Thank you.

A Note from the Producer
Approaching this letter is always a daunting task for me, but never more so than
this, my final year as producer for the Cincinnati Fringe Festival. I am not someone
that people would generally call sentimental, but this year I can’t help but look
back on Festivals past. When I do, I have a great deal of pride in what we’ve
accomplished together.
born out of two artists meeting at my first Fringe. I remember the first thank you I
received from an artist and the smile it brought to my face feeling that I’d helped
make their work better in some small way.
In just the first year…
I have also thought a great deal about what I will remember once I am gone. I
will remember the Fringe Staff and their tireless work to build one of the best
Fringes in the world, piece by tiny little piece. I will remember the contributors
who have helped every year to support a Fringe Festival in a city that didn’t
seem ready for it at one time. I will remember the Board who has allowed me the
privilege of producing this Festival for seven years…and paid me to do it! I will
remember the volunteers, who make things run smoothly filling in gaps that even
after seven years I don’t know about. I will remember the audiences who are the
most adventurous, most excitable, most opinionated, most thoughtful, and most
extraordinary group of theatregoers I’ve known.
I remember what a strange and exhilarating feeling it was to read my first set of
artist applications and I remember recognizing the responsibility I had to curate
well. I remember the first time I walked around Over-the-Rhine peeking in the
windows of vacant storefronts, instead of occupied ones. I remember designing
my first poster and my first guide. I remember signing my first Fringe-related
contracts. I remember my first Closing Night Party. Within hours of that, I remember
my first post-Fringe depression.
I remember Dr. Theirauf, whom I barely knew, but who impressed me at once as a
Fringe Champion. I remember Jason Bruffy’s disdain that my system of scheduling
did not include the use of post-it notes. I remember Greg Hardman telling me how
important he thought Fringe was to the City and to OTR. I remember a lot of people
telling me that. I remember Jeff Syroney sizing me up the whole time.
I remember dealing with the first Fringe Artist I’d pissed off. I remember the first
time I made a huge scheduling mistake. I remember Ensemble Theatre opening
their doors and welcoming multiple Fringe shows. I remember fighting with a jurist
to convince them that a show should be accepted, and I remember when that
show sold only one ticket.
C i n c i n n at i F r i n g e F e s t i va l
I remember my first technical rehearsal. I remember seeing the excitement on
the faces in a room full of artists and realizing how special this was to them. I
remember meeting my first Fringe Friends. I remember the collaboration that was

There are so many things.
I hope that you have Fringe memories as plentiful and as fond as mine.
Thank you to everyone who reads this. You are the reason this Festival exists. You
are the reason it thrives. We have all helped build this Festival for Cincinnati. You
should be proud of yourselves and I hope you continue to share it with more and
more people each year.
I will miss you.

Outgoing Producing Artistic Director
4th Annual FringeNext Series
FringeNext was conceived to give high school-aged artists an outlet for their creativity
at the Cincinnati Fringe Festival. This year’s applications to FringeNext were
exceptional. In fact, there were so many strong submissions that we felt compelled to
accept an extra production, for a total of four.
Some of you know what it takes to transform little more than an idea into a fullystaged production. These motivated young artists have done just that. FringeNext
shows are written, directed, designed, produced and performed by high school
students. Think about that for a minute: During the final throes of the school year, with
distractions like graduations and proms and exams, these young artists have chosen
to create a brand new work of theatre and premiere it at the Cincinnati Fringe Festival.
We find them incredibly inspiring.
Join us for FringeNext performances, hosted once again by our friends at The School
for Creative and Performing Arts. We believe you’ll be inspired, too.

SCPA (45 minutes)
Fri, May 30 @ 9:45 pm
Sat, May 31 @ 4:15 pm
A young man’s journey to find acceptance in a world unlike his dreams.
Ikelus is an evocative story of a young man’s journey to find acceptance in a world
unlike his dreams. This production captures, through the lens of a teenage boy, the
importance of feeling emotion in everyday life. This compelling story follows a
besieged Ike along his journey as he struggles with narcolepsy. As the story evolves,
we begin to see how the struggle of one boy represents the common struggle
everyone has with expressing themselves.

The piece deals with the remembrance of the Holocaust and explores it from the

are they influenced by the way my country wants me to remember it? I try to

It takes everything we’ve got to just be.
Hey there, Fringers! The six of us have decided to accept ourselves in all our varied,
neurotic, and often contradictory glory. We’re applauding our triumphs, cringing at our
failures, and rooting for each other as we learn to just be. We sing, dance, and talk,
about relationships and stuff. Our passion is mixed with self-doubt, but we promise to
give you everything we’ve got! Let’s laugh and cry together, shall we?

anguish of institutionalization. Influenced by Bill Watterson (Calvin & Hobbes),
reflections on prison reform have never been illustrated so “wittily.”

great myth of the body-mind divide. Reflections brings you into the dark places of
one’s mind, while shining light on the possibility of freedom.

Jerry Sandusky’s wife, Dottie, reimagined in monlogues.
In the Jerry Sandusky scandal, one figure remains the most enigmatic to the public; his wife, Dottie,
or Sarge, as she was known. People tend to dismiss her as complicit, a liar, naive or delusional.
Sarge, imagines her in three settings over the course of a year as the Sandusky scandal plays out.

The goal? All 30 original plays must be performed in 60 minutes, and the clock is

actors meet their 60-minute deadline, they get to eat cookies. If they don’t meet it,
they get to watch the audience eat the cookies.

In the aftermath of her rape, a young girl flees her tormenting community and becomes lost in time.
After her sexual assault, 15-year-old Lauren has survived one trauma only to confront another: a
cycle of torment from classmates and neighbors. Desperate to hide from scorn, Lauren becomes
lost in time, witnessing the woman she will become, the girl she was, but always waking in the
present, to the struggles that await her. What role do we play in a violent act? The answer isn’t
simple. And it changes with time. Slut Shaming: A Time-Travel Rape Adventure

A solo performance about laughter, surgery, activism, and a brand new vagina.
Something Something New Vagina is a solo performance about loving one’s self and one’s
body. It’s also about a vagina: Rebecca Kling’s fancy new vagina. Kling was last seen at
CincyFringe in 2012 with Storms Beneath Her Skin; now she’s back (she was never one to call
it clits) and is ready to tackle issues of identity without ovary-acting. Climaxing with a Strip Q&A,
you’d be doing yourself a dis-cervix if you miss it.

Dad’s shoes would be easier to fill if they were pumps.
Joe Hutcheson shares a hilarious collection of stories about growing up gay in the
Hutcheson family, where all the men are nicknamed “Hutch” and boys who identify
with soap opera heroines can’t identify with their dads. Until they grow up. Whether
trying to get kicked off the football team or making his brother act out soap opera
scenes, Hutcheson shows the audience the 1980’s through the eyes of a little gay boy
who doesn’t want to be a Hutch.

with data, charts, and dramatic life-changing stories, this TED-inspired talk proves that
the rich aren’t so different when they’re forced to get close – real close – to the rest of

Desperate to give meaning to the death of the man that served as his muse, Denny

FringeDevelopment
The Cincinnati Fringe Festival was created to give artists an outlet to exhibit their
original work. The final productions take months or sometimes years to create from
inception to production. But what you see on stage is only the last chapter in the
creation of a new show.
Often in this process of developing new work, the creators need an infusion of
support, ideas, personalities, and questions. FringeDevelopment provides that
opportunity by taking advantage of the critical mass of creativity at the Festival, and
leverages them to create something entirely new.
Over the course of the Festival, Fringe artists will work with creators to provide
feedback, creative criticism, and support. You’ll get a chance to see these worksin-progress as a part of the Festival line-up. While these will not be fully realized
productions, they will allow you to catch a glimpse of and participate in the process
of creating a Fringe show.
A special thanks goes out to all of the artists who volunteer their time to collaborate
and to help create something new!

Being an Awesome Ally to the Transgender Community
Being an ally definitely takes some thought, but it need not be scary. This workshop,
with ample time for questions and discussion, will look at allyship from the simple
and easy things anyone can do to more active and hands-on ways of providing
support to the entire trans community. Led by returning Cincy Fringe Artist Rebecca
Kling, who regularly tours performance pieces and educational workshops to colleges,
universities, and theater festivals around the country.
Dogs put on a farce.
Animal Engine develops their latest work by combining dogs and farce. What do you get? A dog
show. Humans playing dogs playing humans. Quick entrances and exits, mistaken identities, and
love triangles will collide with panting, sniffing, and of course lots of leg humping! The Corgi is in love
with the Schnauzer who just can’t get that Puggle off of his mind. You know, something like that...

Nightfall ... absurdly seen through the lens of media sensationalism.
“One of the funniest apocalypses of our time.” It is nighttime in the world. The world
is dark. Everyone’s afraid. Nobody knows if the sun, once down, will ever rise again.
The Governor issues excited statements appealing for calm. A news team is on the
scene but are they reporting the news or creating it? The media has more questions
than answers. But there is a witness, and the witness will speak.

Cincinnati’s original ______ ______ comedy.
Continuing their storied Fringe careers with another one-night-only engagement, OTRimprov
will pull from its grab bag of forms and styles and put on a one-of-a-kind show. Will it be “The
Chronicle”? Could it be “Kentucky Man”? Do you know what any of these things are? Only
one way to find out. Come to the show! Well, I guess you could call and ask, but what fun is
that, plus we are going to be busy. It’s Fringe! Come see the talented cast use your suggestions
to create a night you won’t soon forget. No matter how hard you try.

their deteriorating apartment incessantly begs for repairs, their only comforts:
visitations from Justin Timberlake and Harrison Ford. Authorial Intent (25 min):

The School for Creative and Performing Arts is a K-12 Cincinnati Public School
offering world class pre-professional arts training and advanced college
preparatory academics. Approximately 1370 students attend SCPA, which is
housed in the new Erich Kunzel Center for Arts and Education in downtown
Cincinnati. Artistic Departments include Creative Writing, Dance, Drama,
Instrumental Music, Technical Theater, Visual Arts, and Vocal Music. Academic
departments include English, Foreign Language, Mathematics, Science, and
Social Studies.
Since 1973 Coffee Emporium has been dedicated to bringing fresh perspectives
to the craft of traditional artisan roasting and coffee and espresso preparation.
As the oldest locally owned coffeehouse in the city, we are committed to seeking
out the best coffees from all over the world. We believe that the way to ensure
the greatest quality and achieve the greatest good is to bring control of the
process to the local level; which is why we buy many of our coffees direct from
the farmers at above market prices, roast the beans ourselves, and supply
customers with only fresh, locally made pastries and lunches.
Elementz is a youth center, located in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine Gateway
Quarter, whose purpose is to engage inner-city teens and young adults in positive
ways as an alternative to the street culture of guns, gangs and drugs. Elementz
teaches creative expression using hip hop and urban art as an overall theme, as
hip hop allows expression in music, spoken word, dance and visual expression.
In addition to teaching young people to express themselves through various art
forms, for teens ages 14-18, we focus on engaging them in the community and
building a network of caring adults to help them stay in school, advance to higher
education, create a vision for their future, and stay out of serious trouble. For
young adults we provide additional professional training for serious artists and
help them market their artistic skills.
MOTR Pub is where original music happens in Over-the-Rhine. Free shows.
Every night. Open seven days a week. Join them for dinner seven days a week
and brunch on Sundays! Visit them at motrpub.com
