Information
About Monodraught
We have taken our own steps to reduce and minimise our direct impact on the use of energy, waste and water, and have also
taken steps to make indirect impact on our environment with respect to procurement and influencing Clients’ views on low
energy.
Monodraught Ltd seeks to explore, develop and create innovative low energy concepts and building services solutions in
response to the need to reduce energy consumption of buildings and for their users to reduce energy costs.
Accordingly, by maximising natural available energy from the wind and the sun, Monodraught’s products help their users
reduce their energy consumption, costs, and carbon footprint. Monodraught’s extensive R&D department is key to the
successful development of products such as the WINDCATCHER® natural ventilation systems that provides a controlled
quantity of fresh air into a room from roof level, whatever the wind’s direction, and without mechanical assistance; the
SOLA‑BOOST® solar assisted natural ventilation systems that uses the WINDCATCHER technology in coordination with a
solar powered fan to guarantee additional ventilation on sunny days; and the SUNPIPE® natural daylight systems that delivers
daylight to areas that windows cannot reach.
The latest technology to benefit from this dedicated R&D resource is the range of PCM (phase change material) systems
that provide extremely low energy consumption cooling and ventilation systems and provide a stable room temperature
environment.
Armed with all of these systems Monodraught can provide the optimum low energy solution to the client.

PLANNING PERMISSION / BUILDING REGULATIONS, ETC:
For the SUNPIPE systems you do not normally need to apply for planning permission, but it would be advised to check your local planning department prior to commencement of works. WINDCATCHER natural ventilation systems will require planning permission due to the aesthetic impact on the exterior of the building. Considerations will also need to be made to ensure each individual installation meets with Building Regulations. The requirements for ventilation, acoustic attenuation and thermal performance will need to be assessed. Monodraught can provide assistance in ensuring systems meet with requirements and systems can be tailored to suit each installation.

Square SUNPIPE systems
Square SUNPIPE 300, 450
Sizes available: 300, 450
Monodraught’s SUNPIPE® natural daylight system can be installed on almost any roof type and directs sunlight into a room.
The SUNPIPE collects daylight using a patented Diamond dome, then the MIRO-SILVER® finish aluminium tube transfers the
light to ceiling level before the ceiling diffuser evenly distributes the light around the room without glare. SUNPIPES are suited
to almost any application, and have been installed anywhere from residential bedrooms to the Olympic Handball Arena in
London.
Monodraught’s Square SUNPIPE® natural daylight system is suited to applications where the room being served has a flat
ceiling, as opposed to a typical loft conversion with a vaulted ceiling where a normal rooflight can be used.
Monodraught’s Square SUNPIPE has been specifically developed to provide an unobtrusive termination tile and slate roofs.
The Square SUNPIPE is used in conjunction with Monodarught’s standard 300 and 450 SUNPIPE kits. The square rooflight
measures 475 mm x 570 mm and includes an adaptor to allow it to fit the 300 or 450 circular SUNPIPE systems. With the

SUNCATCHER® natural ventilation and daylight system
The Monodraught SUNCATCHER systems are a method of effectively conveying natural daylight and natural ventilation from
roof level down into the building below by combining the principles of the WINDCATCHER® natural ventilation system with
Monodraught’s SUNPIPE® natural daylight system.
Page 25

The SUNCATCHER system is divided internally into four quadrants so that whichever direction the wind is blowing one or
more quadrants is facing into the wind. The windward quadrants supply air under the action of positive wind pressure, and the
leeward quadrants extract stale air under the action of negative wind pressure. On still days, the SUNCATCHER system acts
as a conventional passive stack system using the natural buoyancy of warm internal air to stimulate air flow out of the building.
The SUNPIPE collects daylight using a patented Diamond dome, then the silverised mirror-finished aluminium tube transfers
light to the room, and finally the ceiling diffuser evenly distributes the light around the room without glare.
•
FEATURES:
»» Type: ABS 350, ABS 550.
»» Shape: Circular.
»» Controls: Manual.
»» Outer Casing: ABS.
»» Ceiling grille: White hit/missed grille or white powder coated eggcrate.
•
ADVANTAGES:
»» Cost effective: No running costs or energy consumption.
»» Healthier system: Brings a steady supply of fresh air into the building, whilst at the same time expelling stale air to the atmosphere.
»» Is sustainable energy in action: Does not use any fossil fuelled energy but relies on harnessing wind power and the thermal rise of warm air.
»» Night time cooling.
»» SUNPIPE top domes are self-cleaning due to their shape.
»» Evenly diffused natural daylight provided to internal spaces.
•
STANDARDS:
»» Complies with Building Regulations (E&W) Approved Document F in providing a Passive Stack Ventilation (PSV) system in accordance with BRE Paper, Reference 13/94. Manufactured in compliance with BS EN ISO 14001 and BS EN ISO 9001.

SOLA-VENT systems
SOLA-VENT 230, 300
Sizes available: 230, 300.
The SOLA-VENT® solar powered daylight and extract system is a fully integrated bathroom light and ventilation kit,
incorporating the SUNPIPE® natural daylight system, two compact halogen downlighters and a solar powered extract fan all
in one unit. The system is ideal for bathrooms and shower rooms where ventilation is essential.
230 SOLA-VENT System: This system incorporates a 230 SUNPIPE, a solar powered extract fan and two
compact‑flourescent downlighters. The system is ideally suited to internal bathrooms and shower rooms to meet current
Building Regulations to provide 15 l/s extract ventilation.
300 SOLA-VENT System: This is designed for larger areas, such as kitchens and utility areas, utilising the 300 SUNPIPE,
which provides approximately twice as much natural light as the smaller 230 SOLA-VENT system. It also incorporates a higher
rated fan. When these systems are used on commercial applications, such as Schools or Office areas, the overall performance
of the SOLA-VENT system actually increases.
Both systems also have an option for a mains powered back-up facility whereby if the system is intended for use for long hours
than designed for, the mains supply can charge the battery pack should the batteries fall below the threshold voltage provided
by the solar panel.

X-AIR systems
WINDCATCHER X-AIR
Sizes available: 110, 140, 170, 200.
The WINDCATCHER X-AIR is a the next generation of natural ventilation system featuring Monodraught patented
ACTIVLOUVRE® modulating aerofoil louvre technology. The system consists of an external static louvre and internal active
louvre arrangement, which varies the opening and free area through the louvre face. The variable louvres can provide
maximum ventilation rates when fully open or modulated to vary weather resistance or closed to prevent the ingress of
precipitation allowing Monodraught to have our unic no leak guarantee.
In addition to the ACTIVLOUVRE arrangement, the system also incorporates external air catchment fins to provide greater
area at the louvre improving performance in relation to wind speed. Pressure release vanes at the fins provide a means to
reduce face pressure under high winds. The systems can also be specified to include solar powered architectural lighting.

X-AIR systems
SOLA-BOOST X-AIR
Sizes available: 140, 170, 200.
The SOLA-BOOST X-AIR is the next generation of natural ventilation system featuring the patented ACTIVLOUVRE®
modulating aerofoil louvre technology and DC solar powered fan controlled by Monodraught’s PowerTrack™ system.
The system consists of an external static louvre and internal active louvre arrangement, which varies the opening and free area
through the louvre face. The variable louvres can provide maximum ventilation rates when fully open or modulated to vary the
weather resistance or closed to prevent the ingress of precipitation.
A fan served by a central core provides intake or extract air (intake as standard), powered by solar panels situated at within the
system capping. The fan is designed to provide the additional ventilation when it is need most, during summer, but with zero
running cost. In order to maximise the performance of the solar powered fan, the system utilises the PowerTrack™ control
system, which maximises the solar output to provide a smooth current from the solar panels and optimised fan flow.

SOLA-BOOST CLASSIC (Square)
Sizes available: 95, 125, 155, 185, 225.
The SOLA-BOOST CLASSIC is an energy free natural ventilation system encompassing the benefits of both topdown and
passive stack ventilation and DC solar powered fan controlled by Monodraught’s PowerTrack™ system. The system consists
of an external louvre protected internally by a Trilayer Weather Protection and internally divided. The simple, but effective
design of the system provides fresh air during the daytime as well as providing night-time cooling.
Due to the flexibility of the WINDCATCHER CLASSIC, the system can be tailored to suit the needs of almost any area. The
systems technological ability has been proven within schools, colleges, healthcare environments, commercial properties as

TRILAYER WEATHER PROTECTION (Square)
Monodraught’s TriLayer Weather Protection combines the use of the WINDCATCHER Classic’s external louvre bank, anti bird
mesh and Rain Trap Louvre feature with an internal fibre mesh to protect against extreme weather conditions and is supplied
as a standard but is also suitable for retro fit installation.
The system assists in preventing snow ingress into Monodraught’s WINDCATCHER Classic systems by averting it before it
reaches the trunk of the system and channelling it back down the Rain Trap louvre. The TriLayer Weather Protection system
has been proven to be effective against simulated fine particle blizzard conditions.

HEAT HARVESTER 5/25, 8/35, 12/75
Sizes available: 5/25, 8/35, 12/75
Heat Harvester systems are a revolutionary de-stratification fan as they thermally equalize the air temperature in an enclosed
space. The significance of this is that the system prevents all the hot air in the space rising to the ceiling and all the cold air
sinking to the most important area, ie. the floor. The Heat Harvester system can also be used in a cooled air conditioned
environment to equalize the temperature. The Heat Harvester system is suitable for any buildings, and can suit ceiling heights
ranging from 2.5–31 m. The system is available as a free hanging unit.

Building Simulation
DAYLIGHT SIMULATION
Monodraught have a range of daylight design tools available to simulate the anticipated conditions experienced within a
given building as a result of the installation of our natural daylight systems.
IES VE-PRO
There are two daylight simulation packages available in the VE-Pro suite that are used as design tools by
Monodraught’s Design Engineers – FlucsDL and RadianceIES.
•
FLUCSDL:
The FlucsDL module enables the designer to determine
the indoor daylight conditions in different rooms within a
building model to ascertain the daylight factors and light
levels experienced within a space. Monodraught have
experimentally determined the design parameters
associated with our natural daylight systems, herefore
our Design Engineers have the ability to model physical
representations of our systems and the subsequent
daylight conditions achieved in the areas that they are
intended to be installed within.
•
RADIANCE IES:
The RadianceIES module enables our Design Engineers
to analyse the daylight levels in a room that has
Monodraught natural daylight systems installed within it.
The programme provides the user with the capability to
produce photo-realistic renders of the internal spaces,
which can also be used to ascertain the exact light levels
within a room. The module can also link with the thermal
simulation modules of the VE-Pro suite, using daylight
dimming profiles for lighting gains to enhance the thermal
comfort for occupants.
DIALUX
The package is renowned for its accuracy in modelling daylight
and the visualizations that can be produced give the client an
insight into the quality of light that can be achieved within a
space by Monodraught natural daylight systems.

Building Simulation
THERMAL MODELLING
Monodraught have a range of thermal modelling tools available to simulate the anticipated thermal conditions
experienced as a result of the installation of our natural ventilation and low energy cooling and ventilation systems
within a given building.
•
Dynamic Thermal Simulation:
A dynamic thermal simulation encompasses all the design parameters that influence the way in which a building responds to the external environment. Users can create a model that replicates the exact physical form of a building, incorporating all aspects of the construction specification and the internal heat gains to simulate the anticipated internal conditions in accordance with industry recognised external weather data. There are three dynamic simulation packages currently used by Monodraught for the thermal modelling of buildings:
IES VE-PRO
Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) are the global leaders in the field of building performance simulation and
their package, the IES <Virtual Environment>, is widely recognised within the industry for its ability to enhance the
sustainable building design process.
VE-Pro is the most powerful suite of building performance analysis tools available, and it is therefore the primary design
tool used by all of Monodraught’s Design Engineers. The ApacheSim thermal simulation engine, supported by the
Suncast and Macroflo modules, complies with the requirements of CIBSE Application Manual AM11, and the software is
recognised as one of the most accurate means of modelling natural ventilation strategies using bulk air flow simulation.
•
Natural Ventilation Design Consultancy:
Monodraught offer a complete design service for our natural
ventilation systems. If the necessary information to compile
a thermal model is made available, our Design Engineers will
construct a complete dynamic thermal model of a building for
a specific project in order to ascertain the size and number of
systems required for a particular natural ventilation or low
energy cooling and ventilation strategy. This service is provided
free of charge, and we issue detailed proposal documents that
outline the input design parameters used for the model and the
resultant compliance with the associated thermal comfort
criterion for our proposed strategy.
Alternatively, our design engineers also have the ability to
simulate our systems using IES models that have been provided
by an external party. The advantage of this approach is that the
client can pre-define the input parameters in their model, thus
ensuring that our Design Engineers are using thermal and
construction templates that accurately reflect the building fabric
and its internal environment.

THERMAL MODELLING
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
•
IES Performance Components:
To help architects and consultants deliver low maintenance, energy efficient designs within the built environment, Monodraught have collaborated with IES to develop Performance Components – a revolutionary way of modelling natural ventilation systems using the Virtual Environment Suite.
Conventional modelling of wind tower systems involves constructing a 3D representation of the WINDCATCHER within a specific model and assigning each face with a performance factor which quantifies its ability to ‘catch’ the air. This process is, however, often misinterpreted by external parties who wish to simulate wind tower systems due to variations between software packages and the manufacturers of such systems being unable to provide the required input data for a particular model. Only now, with the launch of performance components, will there be a defined method for modelling wind tower natural ventilation systems that will soon come to be recognised across the building design industry.
The VE-Pro suite now features a library of predefined 3D component
representations of our systems that can be dragged easily from a
catalogue of products onto a building model constructed within the virtual
environment. The performance and energy savings can then be assessed
in an open and transparent process by the client alone, thus building
confidence in the application of WINDCATCHER natural ventilation systems
and demonstrating the true capabilities and potential for natural and hybrid
ventilation schemes. Each performance component replicates the shape,
texture and colour of the associated WINDCATCHER system, with the
performance characteristics and control strategies predefined to optimise
the usability and efficiency of the tool.
Users will find the simplicity of the ‘drag and drop’ feature rapidly
decreases the modelling time typically associated with these types of
systems. With each performance component already assigned the relevant
construction templates, thermal templates, and flow profiles, they are ready
to simulate as soon as they have been positioned in the model, allowing
users the flexibility to explore the possibilities of natural ventilation as an
alternative to a more conventional mechanical system. The analysis tools
that are available in the VE-Pro suite provide the user with a visual insight
into the performance of WINDCATCHER systems year round, and the
authentic textures offer architects and designers a means of understanding
the aesthetics of Monodraught systems and how best to integrate them
into a building.

NAVENSYS
The NAVENSYS thermal simulation software was developed by Monodraught to
model natural ventilation strategies within buildings. The software has been built
upon Monodraught’s forty years experience in manufacturing natural ventilation
systems and 4 years of academic research by Brunel University.
The NAVENSYS program is a simplified dynamic thermal simulation engine,
requiring fewer inputs than the likes of an IES or a Tas model. This means it is a
useful tool for sizing Monodraught natural ventilation and low energy cooling and
ventilation systems during the early stages of a project, when full details of a
building are not always readily available. The by NAVENSYS simulation software
has been collaborated against performance data from the Tas thermal modeling
software.
