NEC Academic Honor Roll
Scholar-Athletes
2009 NEC Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year:
Daniel Bostock, Monmouth
Major: Communications
Monmouth senior defender Daniel Bostock (Nottinghamshire, England/Virginia Intermont)
was the 2009 NEC Scholar-Athlete award winner in men’s soccer. In a landmark season for the program,
the central defender helped lead the Hawks to an 18-2-2 record, a #5 NSCAA/adidas national ranking,
the program’s third NEC title and an NCAA Tournament victory over UConn. He anchored a defensive
unit that led the nation in goals-against-average (0.45) and ranked second in save percentage (.891).
The accolades rolled in for Bostock at year’s end, beginning with his selection as the NEC Defensive
Player of the Year and third All-NEC honor of his career. He was subsequently named the ECAC Defensive
Player of the Year and to the NSCAA North Atlantic Region First Team before culminating the award
season with his selection to the NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-America Second Team (alongside
teammate Ryan Kinne) and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team. Bostock started all
58 of his career matches with the Hawks posting a 42-10-8 overall mark and 21-4-2 conference record
in his three seasons, all of which resulted in NEC regular season titles. Bostock, who hails from
Nottinghamshire, England, worked towards a 3.59 grade point average majoring in Communications.

Congratulations to the 2009 Team GPA Award Winner: Long Island (3.41)
Northeast Conference Fans:
Welcome to the 2010 Northeast Conference Men’s Soccer Championship!
Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Northeast Conference is excited to present its men’s soccer championship along with tournament host, Monmouth
University. The NEC men’s soccer student-athletes have played some extremely exciting games this fall, and we expect this event will be a memorable one
for the participating teams and the fans alike. The stage is set for three highly competitve matches, and we look forward to crowning the 2010
champions!
Consisting of 12 institutions of higher learning located throughout six states, the NEC is committed to providing opportunities for student-athletes to
achieve their fullest potential both in athletic competition and in the classroom, as well as becoming an NCAA Division I leader for athletic success,
academic achievement and integrity, sportsmanship, equity and diversity, community partnership and national engagement. NEC member institutions
include Central Connecticut State, Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island, Monmouth, Mount St. Mary's, Quinnipiac, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart, St. Francis
(NY), Saint Francis (PA) and Wagner. Bryant University will become a core member of the NEC in 2012 upon completion of the five-year NCAA Division
I reclassification period.
NEC institutions span a number of diverse locations, from the urban bustle of Brooklyn, NY to the rural settings of Loretto, PA and Emmitsburg, MD,
to the beaches and shoreline of West Long Branch, NJ. But when it comes to intercollegiate athletics, the goal of the NEC is consistent - to provide its
members the opportunity to participate in quality competition at the Division I level while operating programs that are fully integrated in the academic
mission of each institution. The NEC’s commitment to academic excellence has translated into national recognition for both individual student-athletes
and the league’s member institutions as a whole. NEC student-athletes consistently graduate at well above the national average and its athletic programs
continue to be honored for their Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and Academic Progress Rate (APR) figures. On a conference-wide level, more than
2,200 student-athletes qualified for the NEC Academic Honor Roll in 2009-10, a 13 percent increase from the previous year. Fairleigh Dickinson and
Saint Francis (PA) posted the highest overall GPAs in the conference to share the NEC Institutional Academic Award.
On the field of play, the NEC has enjoyed many successes both regionally and nationally, competing in 23 NCAA championships each year. In men’s soccer,
Monmouth has been ranked nationally 21 straight weeks, reaching as high as fourth in the nation earlier this season. The Hawks reached the second
round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago, joining CCSU (Sweet 16 in ‘07) and Fairleigh Dickinson (Elite 8 in ‘01) as teams making their mark nationally
over the last decade. The future of the NEC looks even brighter with new facilities and improvements recently completed, under construction or in
planning stages at a majority of the league’s member institutions.
We also would like to thank you, the fans, for your support and tremendous enthusiasm for the sport of men’s soccer. Enjoy the action!
Sincerely,
Noreen Morris, Commissioner
Message To Spectators
Northeast Conference member institutions value the principles of sportsmanship and the ideal of
pursuing victory with honor in intercollegiate athletics. The Conference believes that athletics
should be conducted in a way that reflects positively on the individual participants and institutions. The essential elements of sportsmanship and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept
of character building and seven core principles: respect, responsibility, fairness, honesty, integrity, caring and civility. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects
these seven principles.
The NEC has communicated this message through public service announcements that air on televised football and basketball games, public address announcements at all events and signage on each
member campus. The Conference also implemented a new Team Sportsmanship Award program in
2008-09 to recognize those teams and student-athletes who adhere to the principles of sportsmanship and pursue victory with honor. Saint Francis (PA) finished the year with a league-high six
sportsmanship awards, which are voted on by student-athletes and coaches following the conclusion of each athletic season.
In 2010-11, the NEC is once again partnering with the NCAA on a "Respect" campaign to address sportsmanship and fan behavior issues through
education, communication and enforcement when problems arise.

2009 Championship Game Recap:
Monmouth Tops Quinnipiac, 2-1, For 2009 Northeast Conference Men’s Soccer Title
West Long Branch, NJ -- Goals from No. 8 Monmouth’s Hermann Trophy Award Watch list duo lifted the top-seeded Hawks to the 2009 Northeast
Conference (NEC) Men’s Soccer Tournament title for the first time since 2006. MU improved to a program-best 18-1-1 overall mark with the 2-1 victory
while Quinnipiac finished its season 9-4-7.
Junior Chase Barbieri (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and classmate Ryan Kinne (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck) scored less than three
minutes apart to give MU a 2-0 lead early in the second stanza. Quinnipiac cut the lead in half at the 60:37 mark by virtue of a tally from senior defender
Shane Recklet (Shelton, CT/Shelton), but the Bobcats couldn’t find the equalizer as the Hawks went on to win their third-ever tournament crown.
Both squads had scoring opportunities early into play, the first of which came from MU when Ryan Clark (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township)
collected a pass in the center of the box, but the QU back line was there to break up the attack. Minutes later it was QU’s turn when Bobcat junior forward
Nick Pelicaen (Scoten, Belgium) made a hard run down the left side to get past the Hawk defense. Junior goalkeeper Bryan Meredith (Scotch
Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) rushed off his line to smother the play, but Pelicaen was able to send a ball across the box, which made it’s way
past the open net untouched.
With 11 minutes left in the first stanza, MU sophomore defender and Tournament Most Valuable Player RJ Allen (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough)
lofted a free kick service that found the head of Clark, who nodded it far post forcing Bobcat senior all-league netminder Frederick Hall (St. George,
Bermuda) to lay out to make the save and keep the scoreboard clear. Minutes later another Hawk free kick opportunity found the foot of Barbieri, who
chipped a one-touch shot on target, but Hall got a finger on it to tip the ball up and over the crossbar.
