Besthorpe Nature Reserve is one of Nottinghamshire
Wildlife Trust’s largest nature reserves and provides
ideal habitat for a wide range of birds, wild plants and
other wildlife such as great crested newts.

to Gainsborough road, take the most southern
of the two turns into Besthorpe Village and
follow Trent Lane to its end where you can
park and enter the reserve.

Mansion containing a fascinating collection of
clocks and watches. Group visits / tours available
by prior appointment.

of Eakring, to the south of Kersall and north
of the minor road from the A616 near Caunton
to the A614 just north of Bilsthorpe.

One of the best remaining neutral grasslands in the
County. The meadows provide a good habitat for
butterflies and birds. Care should be taken to avoid
trampling the wildflowers if visiting during May and June.

Visit the Gilstrap Centre in the grounds of Newark
Castle and find out more about the history of the Castle.
Discover also Newark’s Civil War heritage: Newark was
a key town in the struggle between King and Parliament
in the 1640’s. Find out more in the Castle and Conflict
Exhibition – decide if you want to enter the world of
the mediaeval castle.

Standing proudly on the banks of the River Trent in the pretty
market town of Newark, the Castle was built in the 12th
Century and is said to have the finest gatehouse in England.
The grounds have been awarded a Green Flag Award and

13 hectare park which has recently undergone a £2million
transformation resulting in a new visitor centre (with
toilets, cafe and exhibition area), children’s play area
and gardens. Interpretation panels explain the park’s
rich history, including the Queen’s Sconce (the finest
surviving example of a Civil War earthwork in the country)
and a new bridge allows visitors to view the surrounding
countryside from the top of the Sconce. The park also
contains a range of wildlife habitats, including the
riverside Devon Pastures Local Nature Reserve.

created in a Victorian coach house and stables. Facilities

Way and the Robin Hood Way. Sustrans national
cycle route 6 runs through the park.
Country Park open daily from dawn until dusk.
Visitor Centre open Tuesday to Sunday.

country. Visit the beautiful Assembly Room, the Council
Chamber, the Art Gallery and the Mayor’s Parlour, with
its collection of civic treasures.
