St. Anthony Sophomore Accepted into Prestigious Music Program
Christopher Gokelman, a sophomore at St. Anthony Catholic High School, was accepted into the Castleman
Quartet Program in Fredonia, New York, for the summer of 2013. The Castleman Program is a prestigious,
intensive music study program, lasting 4-7 weeks in June and July. The program is run by internationally
known violinist, and teacher at the Eastman School of Music, Charles Castleman. Students in the program are
paired up to perform chamber music and also are coached in solo repertoire. Admittance into the program is
by audition. Only 36 students, high school and college aged, are accepted. Gokelman said “I am very
excited about this opportunity to learn from a renowned faculty and to perform with other talented students
from across the country.” Gokelman recently received the Principal’s Award for his high academic
achievement. He plays the violin in the school choir and with the St. Anthony High School Jazz Band.
Small Token of Appreciation Brings Big Smiles
St. Anthony Catholic High School principal Rene
Escobedo proved that big things do come in
small packages when he gave each full-time
teacher an iPad mini as a token of gratitude
for hard work and a job well done. The tool will
serve many purposes as the high school
faculty stays ahead of the growing demand
to innovate in their classrooms. "Our teachers
are way ahead of their times in using
technology creatively in their classrooms.
Giving them each an iPad mini just makes it a
little easier for them to communicate
seamlessly with their students," said Mr.
Escobedo. The iPad minis were doled out during
the last faculty meeting of the year.
Many Hands Make Light Work
St. Anthony Catholic High School students
volunteered at the annual Catholic Life
Insurance work day May 18 at the Casa de
Padres priests’ retirement center. Noah and
Jordan Torrens, Gaby Cancino, Ryan E.,
Elizabeth Cedillo and Andrew Stinson were
among 45 volunteers who raked leaves,
cleaned roof gutters, moved furniture, trimmed
shrubs and washed windows. Msgr. Alois Goertz,
Msgr. Albert Hubertus, Msgr. John Wagner and
Msgr. Lawrence Stuebben, all priests residing at
Casa de Padres, spent time visiting with the
students and enjoying a hamburger cook-out.
St. Anthony Catholic High School Class of 2013 graduate Sophia
Rossell was honored with a $1,000 dollar scholarship by the Fort
Sam Houston Spouse's Club. She was one of 22 military dependents
recognized at a recent luncheon at the Bright Shawl. Sophia's father,
Abraham Rossell, is a Major in the United States Army stationed at
Fort Sam Houston.
