When L. Frank Baum’s children’s book and American fairy
tale The Wonderful Wizard of Oz came out in 1900 he surely
never foresaw its brilliant future. His creation has become a
cultural touchstone, still reimagined for audiences more than
a century later.
The story of the Kansas farm girl Dorothy who journeys home
from a magic land (with the help of a lion, a scarecrow and a
tin man) while evading an evil witch and seeking a wizard’s
wisdom, has given birth to a bouquet of television, film and
theater versions and is referenced in everything from comics to
commercials.
film in which Diana Ross portrays Dorothy as a Harlem schoolteacher and pop king
Michael Jackson was the Scarecrow.
Now, The Wiz LIVE!
LIVE!,, the newest member of the Oz family, also has given us this
soundtrack featuring the acting and music by the likes of R&B artist Ne-Yo, who
wrote an original song for the show, as well as a cast that includes the superstars
Common and Mary J. Blige and the genre-bending musical goddess Queen Latifah
as the Wizard.
Yes, the Wizard (or Wiz) can be a man or a woman, and one can “Follow the Yellow
Brick Road” or “Ease On Down the Road.” Dorothy and her family can be any race.
The language, the music and the characters of Oz continue on a creative trajectory
that exemplifies a quintessentially American thirst for reinvention and expansion.
Elton John named an album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Road,, little
girls wear ruby slippers at Halloween and little dogs are named
Toto. The 1939 The Wizard of Oz film starring Judy Garland as
Dorothy constantly tops best-film lists, and the contrarian Oz
story Wicked has been on Broadway more than a decade.
Enjoy.
However each new generation comes upon the story, its
endurance and universal appeal lie in familiar themes. Growing
up, making friends, finding the strength (and courage, brains,
and heart) to push through adversity and fear. It is about
discovering that the phrase “There’s no place like home” can
refer to the comforts of family or the joy of finding the essential
truths about yourself or your culture, or whatever else you hold
dear.
after her dog, Toto, as the farmhands prepare the house for the storm. Dorothy lives
with her Aunt Em after the death of her parents, but she doesn’t feel at home there.
Aunt Em lets Dorothy know she is loved and encourages her to figure out who she
is and what she wants from life; Aunt Em will always be there for her ((The Feeling
).
We Once Had).
The latest incarnation of the tale is The Wiz LIVE! a television
event broadcast on NBC on Dec. 3, 2015. The live production of
a theatrical performance, which incorporates special acrobatic
effects by Cirque du Soleil, is based on the groundbreaking
1975 Broadway musical The Wiz
Wiz,, which featured an AfricanAmerican cast and a range of musical styles.
The Wiz took home seven Tony® Awards (including Best
Musical) and furthered acceptance of all-black big-budget
musicals on Broadway. It even morphed into a 1978 feature

Dorothy is separated from Aunt Em and gets caught in the ““Tornado.”” Dorothy wakes
up surrounded by Munchkins and discovers that her house has landed on Evvamean,
the Wicked Witch of the East. Addaperle, the Good Witch of the North, informs her
that she is now in Munchkinland in the good ole U.S. of Oz. The residents of Oz are
filled with gratitude towards Dorothy, but the only thing Dorothy wants is to get
back to her childhood home of Omaha, Nebraska. Addaperle and the Munchkins

a brain and that he believes life’s cards are stacked against them ((You Can’t Win).
She believes that the Wiz could give the Scarecrow the brains he longs for, and they ““Ease On
Down the Road”” making more new friends along the way. They next encounter the Tin Man
who is in desperate need of a heart as well as some oil for his rusted joints ((Slide Some Oil to

see about getting him a heart. They continue their journey and are stopped in their tracks by
the ferocious roar of a cowardly lion with a false bravado ((Mean Ole Lion).
). The Lion joins his
new friends in the hope that the Wiz can give him courage.
The four travelers suddenly find themselves lost as it gets dark outside. Dorothy resists as a
Kalidah attempts to steal her silver slippers. They all end up doing battle with the Kalidah
creatures. Everyone does their part except for the Lion who is too scared to be of use. Dorothy
comforts and inspires him ((Be a Lion)) and they continue on their way. They see Emerald City
in the distance, but first they must get through the treacherous Poppy Fields. The Poppies try
to entrance them and prevent them from leaving, but the Lion takes charge and, in a brave and
clever move, he dances with the Poppies one by one until they discover he has tied them all
up. The Lion has impressed his friends, and they are now all free to head on to the Emerald
City. The Bouncer tries to keep them from entering Emerald City until he learns that Dorothy is
responsible for the death of the Wicked Witch of the East.
Wiz is a fraud and is not all-powerful, but is actually just a magician’s assistant from Nebraska.
The Wiz, in turn, makes the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion realize they had a brain, heart and
courage all along.
With the help of the four friends, the Wiz comes to the conclusion that a solitary existence
hiding behind the guise of the Wiz is no life at all. The Wiz bids the citizens of Oz adieu ((Y’all
Got It)) and offers to give Dorothy a balloon ride back to Omaha. Dorothy realizes that her home
is truly in Kansas, as home isn’t where you live; it’s where you love. Glinda, the Good Witch of
the South, appears and lets Dorothy know she’s been watching over her the whole time, like her
Aunt Em does. Glinda informs Dorothy that the power to return home has been hers all along

they’ve come for, the Wiz tells the Tin Man he is lucky he can’t feel, as it means he won’t know
pain. Tin Man tells the Wiz everything he is missing out on by not having a heart ((What Would
).
I Do If I Could Feel).
The Wiz informs the four friends he will grant their wishes as long as they do something for him
first: kill the Wicked Witch of the West! Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and the Lion build up the
nerve to face this incredible challenge together ((We Got It).
).
Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West, has imposed a “corporate takeover” of Evvamean’s part
of Oz and enforces her will on the people. Her not-so-sunny disposition is quickly apparent
(Don’t Nobody Bring Me No Bad News).
). Evillene learns that Dorothy and her friends are on
their way to kill her. She dispatches her Winged Warriors to capture them and bring them to
her. They are forcefully put to work in Evillene’s lair and their fate is looking very grim. As
Evillene threatens Lion with a knife, Dorothy grabs one of Lion’s water buckets and throws the
water in the Wicked Witch’s face. The water destroys the witch – her dark hold on the Winkies
and other underlings is now broken. Everyone rejoices as it’s ““A Brand New Day.”
The friends head back to Emerald City only to find out they’ve been banned. They trick the
Bouncer into leaving his post and they seek out the Wiz once again. They quickly discover the

2. The Feeling We
Once Had
Aunt Em
Put your arms around me,
Child like when you bumped your shin
Then you’ll know I love you now
As I loved you then
Though you may be trying sometimes
And I’ll need you
And you’re not there
I may get mad
And turn you away
But Lord knows I still care
And if I make you sad sometimes
But you cannot ask for more
I see your feelings show
Than can come from me
I am different than you are
But one day I’ll look around
And one day you’ll see
And you will be grown
You’ll be out in the world
If I lose my patience with you
Such a pretty little girl
And suddenly start to scream
It’s only because I want you to be But you’ll be out there on your own
You’ll be on your own
Everything I see in my dreams
And I’d like to know that it’s there And I’d like to know that it’s there
The feeling we once had
The feeling we once had
Don’t lose the feelin’
When you know that you can,
When you know that you can,
You can come to me
You can come to me
Whenever you’re feeling bad
Whenever you’re feeling bad

5. Soon As I Get Home
Dorothy
There’s a feeling here inside
That I cannot hide
And I know I’ve tried
But it’s turning me around
I’m not sure that I’m aware
If I’m up or down
If I’m here or there
I need both feet on the ground
Why do I feel like I’m drowning
When there is plenty of air?
Why do I feel like frowning?
I think the feeling is fear
Here I am in a different place
In a different time
In this time and space
But I don’t want to be here
I was told I must see the Wiz
But I don’t know what a wizard is
I just hope the Wiz is there
Maybe I’m just going crazy
Letting myself get uptight
I’m acting just like a baby
I’m gonna be all right
Soon as I get home
Soon as I get home
In a different place
In a different time
Different people around me
I would like to know
Of their different world
And how different they find me
And just what’s a wiz,
Is it big?
Will it scare me?
If I ask to leave
Will the Wiz even hear me?
How will I know then
If I’ll ever get home again?
Here I am alone
Though it feels the same
I don’t know where I’m going
Out here on my own
And it’s not a game
And a strange wind is blowing
I am so amazed
By the things that I see here
I don’t want to be afraid
I just don’t wanna be here
In my mind, this is clear
What am I doing here?
I wish I was
Home
What d’ya know? A yellow brick road!
6. You Can’t Win
Scarecrow & Crows
You can’t win
You can’t break even
And you can’t get out of the game
People keep sayin’
Things are gonna change
But they look just like
They’re stayin’ the same

And you’ve only got yourself to blame
You can’t win, child
You can’t win, child
You can’t break even
And you can’t get out of the game
You can’t win
The world keeps movin’
And you’re standin’ far behind
People keep sayin’
Things’ll get better

Ease on down the road
Come on and, ease on down
Ease on down the road
Don’t you carry nothin’

Ease on down the road
Pick your right foot up
When your left one’s down
Come on, legs keep movin’
Don’t you lose no ground
’Cause the road you’re walkin’
Might be long sometime
But just stick with me
And you’ll be just fine

Just to find your courage gone
But just know that feelin’
Only last a little while

You just stick with me
And I’ll show you how to smile
Dorothy, Tin Man

8. Slide Some Oil to Me
Tin Man
Slide some oil to me
Let it slip down my spine
If you don’t have STP
Crisco be just fine
Slide some oil to me
Hit my shoulder blade
All y’all
That don’t have to lubricate
Sure have got it made
Slide some oil to me
Let it slip down my side
Standing here in one position
Sure can make one tired
Slide some to my elbows
And my fingers, if you would
Come on, slide some oil to me, girl
Ooh, does that feel good
Slide some oil to my feet
Look! I have toes again
Come on and slide some oil
To my knees
And let me see if I can bend
Slide some oil to me
I’m beginning to feel fine
Come on and slide some oil
To my throat
And let me lubricate my mind (3x)
Slide some oil to me
I’m beginning to feel fine
Come on and slide some oil
To my throat
And let me lubricate my mind (2x)
My mind, let me lubricate my mind

11. So You Wanted to
See the Wizard
9. Mean Ole Lion
Lion
Say what you wanna
But I’m here to stay
’Cause I’m a mean ole lion
You can go where you wanna
But don’t get in my way
’Cause I’m a mean ole lion
You’ll be standin’ in a draft
If you don’t hear me laugh
And if you happen to come around
Better hope that I don’t frown
’Cause I just might knock you down
’Cause I’m a mean ole lion
Don’t you know I’m ready to fight
I’ll turn your day into night
’Cause I’m a mean ole lion
And if you’re half-bright
You’ll detour to the right
’Cause I’m a mean ole lion
All you strangers better beware
This is the king of the jungle here
And if I happen to let you slide
Don’t just stand there, run and hide
Now, you just caught my better side
’Cause I’m a mean ole lion
I’m a mean ole lion
A mean ole lion
10. Be a Lion
Dorothy
There is a place we’ll go
Where there is mostly quiet
Flowers and butterflies
A rainbow lives beside it
And from a velvet sky
A summer storm
You can feel the coolness in the air
But you’re still warm
And then a mighty roar
Will start the sky to cryin’
Not even lightning
Will be frightening my lion
And with no fear inside
No need to run, no need to hide
You’re standing strong and tall
You’re the bravest of them all
If on courage you must call
Then keep on tryin’
And tryin’
And tryin’
You’re a lion
In your own way, be a lion
Lion & Dorothy
I’m standing strong and tall
Strong and tall
I’m the bravest
You’re the bravest
Of them all
Of them all
If on courage I must call
I’ll keep on tryin’
Tryin’
And tryin’
And tryin’
And tryin’
Keep on tryin’
I’m a lion
In my own way
I’m a lion
Be a lion
Dorothy
Yes, you are.
The Wiz
So you wanted to meet the Wizard
Let me tell you
That you’ve come to the right place
Shall I make you a frog or lizard?
You should see
The strange expression
On your face
If the way I come on is frightening
That’s the way I felt
Like coming on today
Have you ever been
Kissed by lightning?
Let me tell you
That will make you go away
I fly, and the magic of my power
Takes me higher
To a level where the clouds
Turn into fire
In the warmness of the fire
I feel fine
Just keep your eyes open
And the magic you will see
It will whistle on the wind
As it emanates from me
It’s a strong and true vibration
You can feel it on your skin
Now come and take my hand
And we will dance upon the wind
So you wanted to meet the Wizard
12. What Would I Do
If I Could Feel
Tin Man
Woh woh wohwoh
What would I do
If I could suddenly feel
And know once again
What I feel is real
I could cry, I could smile
And I might lay back for a while
Tell me what
What would I do
If I could feel
What would I do
If I could reach inside of me
And know how it feels
To say I like what I see
Then I’d be more than glad to share
All that I have inside of here
And the songs my heart might bring
You’d be more than glad to sing
And if a tear came to my eye
Think of all the wounds they mend
And just to think
The time I could spend
Being vulnerable again
Tin Man, Dorothy, Scarecrow & Lion
Tell me what
What, what would I do
Tell me what
What, what would I do
Woh, tell me what
What, what would I do

Me No Bad News
Evillene & Ensemble
Now, when I wake up in the afternoon
Which it pleases me to do
Don’t nobody bring me no bad news
’Cause I wake up already negative
And I’ve wired up my fuse
So, don’t nobody bring me no bad news
Oh, if we’re gonna be buddies
You better bone up on the rules
’Cause don’t nobody bring me
No bad news
You can be my best of friend
As opposed to payin’ dues
’Cause don’t nobody bring me
No bad news
Well, no bad news
No bad news
No bad news
No bad news
Now, don’t you ever bring me
Don’t you bring me
No bad news
No bad news
’Cause I’ll make you an offer, child
That you cannot refuse
So, don’t nobody bring me
No bad news
Now, when you’re talkin’ to me
Don’t be cryin’ the blues
’Cause don’t nobody bring me
No bad news
No, don’t you bring her no bad news
You can verbalize, vocalize
But just bring me the clues
But don’t nobody bring me
No bad news
Bring the message in your head
Or in something you can’t lose
17
No bad, no bad
No bad, no bad news
But don’t you ever, ever bring me
No bad news
Don’t you bring her no bad news
If you’re gonna bring me something
Hoo
Ah, make it something I can use
But don’t you bring me
Don’t nobody bring me
No bad news
Oh, no bad news
No bad news
No bad news
No bad news
Now, don’t you bring me
No bad news
No bad news
’Cause I’ll make you an offer, child
That you cannot refuse
So, don’t you bring me
No bad news
Oh, don’t nobody bring me
No bad news
If you’re gonna bring me something
Now, bring me something I can use
No bad, no bad, no bad
No bad news
But don’t you ever bring me
No bad news
Don’t you bring her no bad news
’Cause I’ll make you an offer, child
That you cannot refuse
So, don’t nobody bring me
No bad news
I said, don’t nobody bring me
No bad news
I said, don’t nobody bring me
No bad news
Don’t you bring me (7x)

The Wiz
All
I got to leave
Just for us
So I’ve packed my bag
Scarecrow & Ensemble And I’m goin’
Everybody wake up
I got a date
19
Wake up
So don’t you ask me to stay
’Cause I’m showin’
You were always ready
For new wizardry
You must have thought
That miracles came easy to me
Take what I give you
And put it up on a shelf
’Cause now it’s time
For this here Wiz
To wiz on himself
And I’m wizin’
Give me a reason
Why I should stay
And I’ll judge it
My mind is made up
So nothin’ you say’s
Gonna budge it
Y’all copped a whole lot of
Magic from me
But this the greatest magic
That you’ll ever see
If you blink more than one time
The kid will be gone
And you will have to hook up
The rest on your own
And do you know
What I think about that?
Your work’s cut out for you
It’s not about ifs, buts or ands
’Cause when I leave this town
I’m leaving it all in your hands
I packed all my clothes and
I packed up my power
I’m leavin’ this place
In less than one half an hour
If you look up in the sky
You’ll know just who it is
It’s not a bird or a plane
It’s just a little ole Wiz
And guess who’s on after that?
Citizens
Y’all got it (3x)
The Wiz
Talkin’ ’bout leavin’ here
Citizens
Y’all got it (3x)
Talkin’ ’bout leavin’ here
Y’all got it (9x)
17. Believe in Yourself
Glinda
If you believe
Within your heart you’ll know
That no one can change
The path you must go
Believe what you feel
And know you’re right
Because the time will come around
When you say it’s yours
Believe that you can go home
Believe you can float on air
Then click your heels three times
If you believe oh,
Then you’ll be there
Believe in yourself
Right from the start
Believe in the magic
Right there in your heart
Believe all these things
Not because I told you to
But believe in yourself
Believe in yourself
Believe in yourself
As I believe in you
18. Home
Dorothy
When I think of home
I think of a place
Where there’s love overflowing
I wish I was home
I wish I was back there
With the things
I’ve been knowing
Wind that makes the tall grass
Bend into leaning
Suddenly the raindrops that fall
Have a meaning
Sprinkling the scene
Makes it all clean
Maybe there’s a chance
For me to go back
Now that I have some direction
It sure would be nice to be back
Home
Where there’s love and affection
And just maybe I can convince time
To slow up
Giving me enough time in my life
To grow up
Time, be my friend
Let me start again
Suddenly my world’s gone
And changed its face
But still I know where I’m going
I have had my mind
Spun around in space
And yet, I’ve watched it growing
And if you’re listening, God
Please, don’t make it hard to know
If we should believe
The things we see
Tell us, would we try and stay
Or should we run away
Or is it better
Just to let things be?
Living here in this brand new world
Might be a fantasy
But it’s taught me to love
So it’s real to me
And I learned that we must
Look inside our hearts
To find a world full of love
Like yours, like mine
Like home
