The new Year 9 Greenways Campus is
on track for its grand opening in 2013.
Over the last two weeks there have been a number of Valedictory
activities: House dinners and breakfasts, a Communion Service in St
Augustine’s, the Valedictory Assembly and associated activities last
Monday culminating on Tuesday with the Valedictory Service in St
Paul’s Cathedral and a Dinner at The International of Brighton. At all of these events
heartfelt tributes have been paid to and by our Valedictorians. It is obvious from the
various events that the Class of 2012 is endeared to the School and by the School. I
commend the Year 12s for the way in which they have left the School and l am sure
we all join in wishing them well for their studies in the weeks ahead and in leading,
what l am sure we would all want, extraordinary lives!
At the Valedictory Dinner our Head Prefects, Tristan Broadway and Tegan Johnson,
spoke eloquently about their journey through the School, what it meant to them
and how the School is seen as their second family. There can be no doubting the
importance of the School in their lives and the lives of their peers. The final roll call
saw all of the Year 12 students on their feet to toast their parents and teachers. Mr
Baker proposed the toast to the Valedictorians. It was a special night, once again,
and l thank those who have supported the Year 12s on their journey through the
School.

Having advised you in a recent Messenger of the appointment of Mr Ben Manifold as our new Deputy Principal - Operations
l regret to now inform you that, due to family reasons, he will not be able to take up his appointment. We will now engage
an Executive Recruitment specialist to fill this vacancy. Ms Frizza, Ms Bradshaw and myself will fill the void in the first semester of 2013.

News from Curriculum
Eight Ways Technology is Improving Education
Studies across the education systems around the world have identified that technology does help students learn by providing them with an education platform that appeals to them, is interactive and develops real world technology skills.
Standardised test scores across the USA showed that students were performing at least as well as they would have without
technology, most performed better. As part of the same study, students began taking more responsibility for their own
learning and teachers became more like mentors and less as presenters of information. Absenteeism also reduced. The
most important finding of this study was that students using technology regularly, and without prompting, employed inquiry, collaboration and technological and problem solving skills.
As reported by Sarah Kessler from the Education Tech Series, Don Knezek, the CEO of the International Society for Technology in Education compared education without technology to the medical profession without technology.
He said that technology is helping teachers to teach in different ways to engage all students. The variety of ways that concepts can now be demonstrated, projects can be researched and assessment can occur has led to an improvement in student performance. Today’s teaching and learning is less about learning facts and figures and more about learning how to
learn, to sort through the masses of information available (and what is correct and what is not) as well as being more glob2
al. Problem solving and creativity are vital skills that our students will need as they enter adulthood.
Mr Knezek identified eight key ways that technology can improve education:

Better simulations and models – digital simulations and models can be used for processes that happen too slowly or
quickly to be demonstrated in the physical classroom.

Global learning – connections with students in other countries can be used to share information from a cultural perspective, as well as being language based.

Virtual manipulatives – the best example occurs in Mathematics, where with the change of a single number in an
equation, a student can see how this may impact on graphs, growth patterns and develop a greater understanding of
the relationship between variables.

Probes and sensors – used to create a graph motion in real time. Used in subjects such as Physics, Physical Education
and sports coaching.

More efficient assessment – our LMS will allow students to complete quizzes and receive immediate feedback.
Teachers can track how a student is going on a longer task/project as well as how much time has been spent on each
element of the project. Plagiarism also becomes a thing of the past as programs identify whether or not the work is
the student’s own.

Storytelling and multimedia – multimedia projects allow for collaboration, as well as the engagement of all the senses when presenting the outcome. Student are motivated that their peers will see the product they have produced.

E-books – the better e-books have models, simulations and visualisations as part of their repertoire. There is still a
way to go with this one.

Epistemic games put students in real world situations and ask them to solve real world problems. This makes the
learning more relevant, more engaging and more authentic. Creativity is also developed.
Schools need to stay abreast of the developments of technology because they nurture the workforce of tomorrow. Our students need to have the skills to be productive members of a highly technologically driven society. The teacher should not be
the only source of information and our students should understand how to access resources and tools on the internet.
Teachers still remain an important place in the classroom. John Hattie, in his research,
identified that the quality of the teacher is one of the major impacts on student performance. Technology, while a very valuable tool to assist in the education of our students,
needs to remain one of the tools available to us and not the only tool that we use. However, it would be disadvantageous to our students in future years to not provide them
with the skills to use technology to their benefit and in a responsible manner.

News from The Mary Jones Early Learning Centre—Libby Chislett
Term 4 is well under way and the children have had a busy and exciting start to the term.
Our Kindergarten children and their families had a glorious day at Myuna Farm last Friday
where they experienced a touch of farm life first hand. By the look on their faces on returning to school on Friday it was a fun but tiring day. To complement this learning and
the Life Cycles science focus in the Pre-Prep rooms the Middleton family has kindly arranged for the children to watch baby chicks incubating and hatching in the ELC. No
doubt much petting of these chicks will occur before they are retired to the Middleton’s
sunny backyard.
Currently, the Kindergarten teaching staff are meeting and appropriating groups for next
year. The children are carefully placed with staff and other students who the current kindergarten staff believe will enhance
their development the most. Pre-Prep staff are doing the same for the entry into Eblana Prep classes Please remember that
Transition Day for all students staying on at Mentone Grammar is Friday 23 November. Children moving on to other schools
do not attend on this day. Monday 26 November is a student-free day as staff meet with their 2013 students and families
individually.
During this term our Centre will be visited by assessors to ensure that our Centre is working towards the new framework
and national regulations that came into effect this year. You may be randomly chosen by these people to answer a few
questions regarding your experiences here in the ELC. This is the first year this has occurred and will be ongoing to ensure
that all Early Childhood Centres Australia wide are providing a program that meets the children’s needs and involves the
family in the planning of the program; so it is a collaborative process between home and school. If you have any questions
regarding this process please ask your child’s teacher.

Sunscreen reminder: It is very important to apply sunscreen each morning as what might appear as an overcast day in the
morning may indeed be a day where your child gets sunburnt, so please apply each day before leaving home. If you forget
all rooms have sunscreen which you may apply on arrival. Sun hats are compulsory this term.
Don’t forget Grandparents’ Day is next week, we welcome any special adult visitors into our rooms - please advise staff
how many visitors will be representing your family.
Come November, a Christmas feel will descend on the ELC as we begin to prepare for the Christmas Pageant and making
gifts for our families. It is truly a magical time here and one we would love for you to share with us. If you would like to stay
and help the children with these special activities please see staff. Staff will inform you shortly regarding costumes for this
special event.

News from Eblana—Mr John Nolan
Great Achievers
This week in Eblana words of praise included: diligence, wonderful, brilliant, enthusiasm, wise, interesting, discipline, excellent, endeavour and fantastic. I am delighted to present Achiever of the Week Awards to: Justin Pregnalato (Prep B),
Elke Madlender (Prep K), George Fennessy (1OC), Hamish Hughes (2S), Chanel Kilpady (3H), Livinia Stockdale (3L) Callum
Roberts (4HS)and Ruby Parkes (4E).
This week Mrs Watkins awarded the Art Award to Year 4E for excellent group work
shown when working together on the Picasso cow.
Mrs Burgess awarded the Music Award to Year 4HS for its quiet and productive group
work throughout music. This disciplined approach demonstrates a genuine readiness for
Year 5!
Eblana Instrumental Concert—Matthew Cohn
The Eblana Instrumental Concerts are a wonderful opportunity to hear the work the children have been doing in the Eblana Instrumental Program. Our Semester 2 Instrumental Concert will be held on Thursday
8 November 2012 at 3.45pm to 4.45pm in St Augustine’s Church - 90/92 Como Parade West, Mentone.
Students should make their way to St Augustine’s Church immediately after dismissal from classes and assemble in the
“tea serving” area at the back of the Church.
Eblana Chess Team—James Yerondais
Dylan Bradley, Kosta Avanitakis, Blake Rosenberg, Noah Bloch and Ethan Prabaharan worked hard all year and after our
last victory at Pakenham Secondary College these boys received such high accolades that they were awarded a position in
the Victorian State Finals. This was held at Monash University, with over 43 schools participating and 230 students attending from around the State. With our familiar foes Deepdene Primary and Trinity Grammar in the draw, we knew that we
had our work cut out for us.
The boys needed to battle their way through nine games, each game scoring them one point for a victory, half a point for a
draw and zero for a loss. After Round 5 the Mentone Team was sitting at a surprising 14 th position overall. I say surprising
as we have attended many tournaments and, thus far, been unsuccessful. So to have so many schools here that had beaten us in the past we were extremely proud of ourselves. With two schools undefeated, we set our sights on a top ten finish
rather than an overall victory. Confidence running high with excitement we had a rollercoaster final three rounds and finished a respectable 8th position overall.
I am extremely proud of the boys and congratulate them on their fantastic effort and fabulous sportsmanship. Our School
is slowly building a reputable name as an opponent to be respected, not just for our cunning and intelligent game play but for our friendly and playful disposition.
I would like to thank the School and staff for all their support this year and the students
who give up their Friday lunch breaks to play and learn alongside us. A special mention to
Year 12 mentor Thomas Feng for all his wisdom and patience. I would also like to thank
Mr John Nolan and Rev. Michael Prabaharan for supervising, driving and being huge fans
and, of course, Principal Mal Cater for backing the team all year. Without you all these
special times in the students’ lives would not be possible.

News from Bayview— Mr Cameron Lancaster
This week has seen the Year 5 students undertake a Learning Journey to Maldon to conclude their current program of Bike
Education. This is the first Learning Journey beyond Year 7 that I have attended for some time and, while I will leave the
numerous highlights of the Learning Journey to our students for next week’s edition of the Messenger, it did again reinforce
the benefits that accompany such a learning experience for our students. Beyond the obvious benefits of skill acquisition
were the high levels of camaraderie and enhancement of friendships as students worked together to overcome a variety of
challenges, improved levels of confidence and decision making in unfamiliar surrounds, the sheer excitement of attempting
something new and subsequent exhilaration of successful completion and the continued development of trust in staff and
student relationships. What a wonderful addition to our classroom lessons these opportunities provide.
With the final Learning Journeys of the year approaching, I would also like to take this opportunity to record my thanks to
the staff who attend and contribute so significantly to the success of these programs throughout Bayview.

State Short Course Swimming
The State Short Course Swimming Championships were held at MSAC from 31 August to 2 September. Sixteen students
from Mentone Grammar set the required qualifying times throughout the winter months in order to compete in this event.
Georgia Coutts, Molly Ford, Nicholas Georgiou, Justin Green, Frazer Kemp, Stephanie Sanderson-Pearce, Timothy Silvester and Brannan Smith all recorded personal best times throughout the meet.
Top ten places were achieved by Jessica Balleggi, Emily Bresnehan, Nicholas Capomolla, Georgina Gore, Isabelle Koh, Lotus Jeffs, Tyler Rix and Max Williams. In total, this group achieved 20 top ten finishes.
Tyler Rix finished in the top seven swimmers for his age group in seven events, including the 16yo Boys 200m Freestyle
where he collected a silver medal.
Emily Bresnehan competed in three events, finishing in the top half dozen in all of them, including winning the State Title
for the 11yo Girls 100m Backstroke.
Max Williams collected four Gold medals and one Bronze medal. He finished third in the 13yo Boys 200m Butterfly and won
the State Title in the 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 100m Backstroke and 200m Backstroke.
Nicholas Capomolla won five events, capturing the 14yo Boys State Title in the 100m Individual Medley, 200m Individual
Medley, 100m Freestyle, 100m Breaststroke and the 50m Freestyle Event. Nicholas set a new State Short Course record in
the 50m Freestyle with a time of 24.01s.
Congratulations to all of the students who competed in this event and well done on your achievements.

Gymnastics Success
On Sunday 21 October Charlotte Pate (Year 5) competed for the first time at the Victorian Gymnastics Championships Qualifier in Geelong. She was a National 5A competitor and was very
proud and excited to achieve qualification at the event. She will now compete at the Victorian
Gymnastics Championships Final on 11 November on all four apparatus.

A Lifetime of Memories
This week we also celebrated with eight graduating ‘lifers’ - students who
have spent their entire school lives at Mentone Grammar. Before leaving
they visited the Mary Jones Early Learning Centre to share morning tea with
some of their former Kindergarten teachers, Ms Marie Hanson, Mrs Jillian
Watkins and Mrs Nicola Hamilton.

The students in Years 9 to 11 are rapidly approaching their final examinations which commence on Monday 19 November
for Years 10 and 11 and Wednesday 21 November for Year 9 students.
With only three weeks to go all students are encouraged to prepare study programs to ensure that they prepare themselves
as thoroughly as possible for the challenges ahead.
Sport
Tennis: Jack Lazogas
The eagerly awaited 2012/13 Sports Season had finally arrived with Mentone travelling to Albert Park to play Ivanhoe
Grammar School. The departure of Year 12s: Taylor Ward, Alexander Babanine and Alex Kalyvas left the team with big
shoes to fill. However, three debutants were introduced for Round 1: Trent Jones, Kane Frances and Glen Thai-Chan. Mentone started strongly with seven out of the eight doubles matches being won, with a special mention to Anthony 'Tambo'
Tamboriello and Oliver 'Ollie' Florent who defeated the number one Doubles pair from Ivanhoe! The success in the Doubles relieved some of the pressure on the new boys going into the Singles. The brilliant form of William Dutt, Ben Gilliver,
Tambo and Ollie, clinched an emphatic victory for Mentone. Final result: Mentone 11 sets defeated Ivanhoe 5 sets.

Table Tennis: Mr Dayton
A most encouraging start to season 2012/13 with a strong win over 2012 Runners-Up Premier Team Peninsula. We met
Peninsula twice last season and were beaten on both occasions, so this victory was a particularly satisfying one. Captain
Timo Maher won all three of his matches. Vice-Captain Aaron Mahoney also did well to win two out of three matches. Andrew Ji and Lachlan Ward both contributed two wins each whilst strong support was given by Nick Weldon with two wins
as well. We need to look at different combinations in our Doubles as Peninsula won two out of the three matches in that
area. Our 2nds went down fighting to Camberwell Blue – 5 rubbers to 10 and the 3rds lost to Ivan 14 rubbers to 1.
Cricket
The First Cricket Team has been training hard in the lead up to the season including practice matches against the Old Mentonians, Victoria Police and The Crusaders which gave students vital experience under match conditions. Highlights of those
games included:

Solid batting by Jake Bloomer (43), Damien Johns (25) and Josh van Cuylenburg-Reimers (27) which gave us the
foundation for a competitive total in the match against the OMs. James Grant, Nick Henricks, Damien Johns, Josh
van Cuylenberg-Reimers and Kane Wilson all bowled well against the powerful OMs batting line up.

Good batting by Captain Jake Bloomer (35) and Ryan Stringer (28) and a fine spell of bowling by Daniel Borys (2 -12)
were features of the match against Victoria Police.

The batting highlights in the match against a strong Crusaders team, which included former test cricketer Merv
Hughes, were an undefeated 50 to opener Josh van Cuylenburg-Reimers, 28 to Jake Bloomer and 21 not out to
Ryan Stringer. Ben Earney bowled well in his return from injury to capture 2 for 26. Fraser Maclaren also bowled his
legspin with great control.
Mentone had its first AGSV game against Ivanhoe on the weekend. With the majority of last year’s premiership team finishing school this year we had nine students making their debuts for the First XI: Fraser and Damien Johns, Daniel Borys, Ryan
Stringer, James Grant, Kane Wilson, Nick Henricks, Abhijid Das and Lachie Fryer.
Mentone started the game disastrously on a wicket that had a bit of life in it collapsing to 4 for 17. In a gutsy display against
a very good bowling attack Mentone managed a respectable 176 thanks to contributions from Jake Bloomer (55), Fraser
Johns (22), Daniel Borys (40) and Kane Wilson (21). A couple of careless run outs cost us an even more competitive total.
Mentone’s bowlers toiled hard on what had become a much better batting wicket, however, Ivan hoe passed our score with
6 overs to spare. James Grant was the pick of our bowlers with his opening spell of six over, where he picked up a wicket for
a miserly two runs, being particularly impressive. He was well supported by Jake Bloomer, Josh van Cuylenburg-Reimers,
Damien Johns, Fraser Maclaren and Kane Wilson.
First Badminton Mentone v Peninsula
Last Saturday the First Badminton Team, consisting of Allen Ling, Arwel Lincoln, Gabriel Brazil-Cornish and James Xu, faced
a strong Peninsula side in the first round of the Summer AGS competition. Having lost three Year 12 players from last season, the team realised it was going to be a tough game.
Nevertheless, Mentone started strongly with Allen and Arwel winning the first two singles. Arwel is commended for an outstanding performance in his debut for the First Badminton, winning a very hard fought victory in a tough game that went to
three sets. All members of the team played with determination and enthusiasm. Peninsula, however, fought back to take
the third and fourth Singles and, in the deciding second Doubles, Mentone succumbed in another close game. The final
score saw Mentone defeated by 2 Rubbers, 4 Sets, 201 Points to Peninsula 4 Rubbers, 8 Sets, 254 Points.

Sailing Team
The Sailing Team had a great start to the season, winning three out of our four races. Even after losing our captain, Anton
Sasson, we were lucky enough to gain a new member - Molly Ford. Molly (my younger sister) being brand new to the tactics
of teams racing was fairly nervous to begin with but helped to pull the team through, helping us lead to win against St
Michael's Grammar School, Haileybury, and Toorak College, losing only to St Leonard's College after not being able to recover from a bad start. After a good last season and a strong start to the new season back, we seem to being showing great
potential for the rest of this year.

AGSV Athletics 2012
In September, the Mentone Grammar Athletics Team competed against the other AGSV schools at the new Lakeside Stadium at Albert Park. It was a fantastic carnival which was for the first time run with the boys and girls competing alongside
each other throughout the day. This created a great environment for all team members to get behind each other and support their teammates throughout the day. In what is always a tough season immediately after winter – the majority of the
squad worked very hard to improve on their personal bests across a variety of events.
This season Mentone Athletics Club got involved with the Mentone Grammar squad and provided expertise coaching across
the various disciplines. This addition saw many improvements and the students benefited enormously from their assistance
not only on the final day but right throughout the season.
The day was approached with great enthusiasm and the students should be proud of their performances as both the Boys’
and Girls’ Teams improved significantly in 2012. There were some excellent efforts across the different events and age
groups on the day. The Top Three finishes are listed below:

Although we acknowledge these individual results, special mention should go to all of the Athletics Team for representing
Mentone Grammar to the best that they could. The improvements made across both teams were significant (Boys improved
by 37 points, Girls improved by 25.5 points) and the future of the Mentone Grammar Athletics team is looking bright. The

Sport Arrangements for Term 4 Summer 2012/13
Welcome to the 2012/13 AGSV Summer Sports Season. Mentone Grammar is conscious of how important the role of sport plays in the physical and social development of young people. It is our aim to provide as many games as possible for all students to experience competitive
sport. Training has already commenced this term and the first round of Boys’ Sport was played on the weekend. Matches for the Boys’ competition will be on Saturdays 27 October, 10 and 17 November. Matches for the Girls’ competition will be on Saturdays 10, 17 and 24 November. Students are expected to attend training sessions every week during the season and to be available to play on the dates mentioned
above.

‘Wheelathon’
for Wheelchairs for Kids
Bayview Oval, Bayview students
9am – 3pm Friday 2 November
Wheelchair Wheelathon!
On Friday 2 November from 9am – 3pm, there will be a
Wheelchair Wheelathon on Bayview Oval to raise money
to buy specially designed wheelchairs for children in third
world countries. All Bayview students will be taking part in
a relay style event, tag team style. In addition to raising
money for a very good cause, we are hoping that students
will learn a little about the challenges of life in a wheelchair. All funds will go to Rotary Club of Mordialloc who
will then buy the wheelchairs for Wheelchairs for Kids
(www.wheelchairsforkids.org). There will be a sausage
sizzle run by Rotary with the help of students. A great opportunity for the school to support our community. Families are invited to come along and watch their children
complete the Wheelathon any time during the day.

Dear Parents,
This week in Oshc we have made
Cupcake flowers, hand print
flowers and butterflies. We have
enjoyed making things out of our
cardboard boxes with lots of great
inventions being created.
We are also busy preparing for our
Halloween party by making ghostly
and spooky decorations. We are
looking at the history of
Halloween from its’ beginnings.
Our Halloween party is scheduled
for next Wednesday afternoon
31st. of October.
As we are now heading towards
Summer and the afternoons are
longer, we will be spending more
time outdoors. It is important that
the children bring a hat for outside
play. We have a hat box where the
children can leave their hats with
us in order to avoid forgetting to
bring one from their classroom.

NQF Update
In line with the changes due to the rollout of the
National Quality Framework, we have implemented
a new system of programing and reflection. On the
sign out table you will now find a reflection book with
a page for each week of OSHC. The children are
encouraged to write their feedback on the various
activities they participate in as well as any
suggestions for future activities they would like to see
as part of our program. We would like to encourage
the children to use this book as much as they would
like so we can continue to provide activities that they
will enjoy.

Education Maintenance Allowance - information for parents
currently receiving EMA
Changes to the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) for 2013:
The EMA continues to help families on lower incomes with financial assistance to cover the cost of
educational expenses including textbooks, stationery, uniforms and excursions for their child up until the
age of 16.
From 2013, the Victorian Government is restructuring the EMA to better target financial support to families
on lower incomes. Payments made direct to parents will be increased for eligible recipients at all year levels
up to age 16, with an additional increase for parents with students in Years Prep and 7 in recognition of the
additional costs at these transition points.
In 2013 the annual EMA payment for families with children in primary school (years 1 -6) will receive a
payment of $150. Families with children in secondary school (Year 8 up un til the age of 16) will receive an
annual payment of $250.
The School Start Bonus which was previously received by EMA families has been discontinued as a
separate payment from 2013. However, additional funding has been incorporated into the EMA meaning
that parents of children in Prep and Year 7 will receive boosted EMA payments of $200 and $300
respectively in those years.
From 2013, the EMA will no longer be paid 50/50 between the parent and the school. The 50% school
portion of the EMA will no longer be paid to schools on behalf of parents. However, $62 million over four
years will be redirected to the State’s most needy schools to assist families on lower incomes. These funds
will form part of the school Student Resource Packages to be allocated at the local level.
New EMA payment option
From 2013, on the EMA application form you can choose to have your EMA payment;

Paid by direct deposit (Electronic Funds Transfer) into your nominated bank account or

Paid by cheque which will be posted to the school for collection or

Paid to the school to be held as credit which you can use towards education expenses
The introduction of the new payment option to have the EMA payment directed to the school provides
parents with extra flexibility to assist with budgeting towards education expenses.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for the EMA in 2013, you must:

be either a parent or guardian of a primary or secondary school student up to the age of sixteen;
and

be an eligible beneficiary of a Centrelink pension, allowance or benefit within the meaning of the
State Concessions Act 2004* or be a Veterans Affairs (TPI) pensioner or be a temporary foster
parent.
* i.e – the parent/guardian must be the holder of a valid Health Care Card or valid Pension Card.
The eligibility criteria must be met as at 29 January 2013 (Instalment One) and 15 July 2013 (Instalment
Two).
