Public Speaking: Ms Hicks
Congratulations to Kelsey Cotton (Year 12) who won the overall Club Award and Public Speaking Award for the Lions Club Youth of the Year. She now has the opportunity to move to the
next level and who knows she may even be a National winner travelling to the UK representing
Australia! The selection process involved being nominated, completing a very detailed application form, facing three judges in an interview as well as presenting a speech at the Lions Club
Annual Dinner.
AGIDEAS- International Design Conference: Ms Fuerst
Each year Melbourne is fortunate enough to host this amazing design conference.
AGIDEAS offers a FUTURES night that is aimed at senior school students. The evening’s program will include 10 designers
from a wide range of careers who will discuss their work, accompanied by a huge colour PowerPoint. Students who have
attended this in the past have acknowledged how insightful the evening has been for them. This is a marvelous oppor-
tunity for students to understand the broad range of careers on offer in the area of Design. Past speakers have included the
designer of the Cube building for the Beijing Olympics, the Concept artist for George Lucas, international stylists, Hollywood
set designers, architects, landscape designers and so on. If you are a student in Years 10, 11 or 12 and considering a career
in Design, this night is for you. On this night there are also information stalls held by universities and TAFEs. Futures night is
on Wednesday 23 May at the Melbourne Convention Centre. The cost is $40 and payment can be made at Main Reception.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the Head of Visual Arts, Robyn Fuerst at
[email protected] or call 95813234.
News from the Library: Ms Novak
It’s official! The National Year of Reading has been launched at Mentone
Grammar!!
In the presence of our Patron MGRA, George Ivanoff, and with the assistance of Principal, Mr Mal Cater, the ribbon was cut and the balloons released to herald the beginning of a year filled with events, activities and a
myriad of programs all aimed at encouraging and inspiring members of the
Mentone Grammar School Community to read, read and read some more!
A throng of students, teachers, parents and visitors, including local librarians and teacher librarians, joined MG library staff and our Patron MGRA,
George Ivanoff, to celebrate the launch of the National Year of Reading at our school. To the background music of the MG
Brass Band, a host of new books just begging to be selected for purchase and an opportunity to win one of the many door
prizes, visitors to the GFL, our senior campus library, were able to enjoy a delectable lunch while listening to words of welcome from our Head of Library, Miffy Farquharson. Explaining the impetus behind our year long program at Mentone
Grammar, Miffy said:
As part of our response to the creation of the National Year of Reading, the library team created a badge, a Brownlow for readers if you will, that aims to identify those members of our community who love to read and who are
proud to show it. Our MGRAs, Mentone Grammar Reading Ambassadors, will receive their badge today, and I trust
that they will wear their badges with pride and passion.
George Ivanoff is the author of more than 50 novels and fiction titles for children, avid blogger, Old Mentonian, “Friend and
Ambassador” of the National Year of Reading 2012 and our very own Patron MGRA. Describing experiences from his own
childhood and his engagement with reading at Mentone Grammar when he was young, George also mentioned books that
had inspired him to read and later to become an author. The key message presented though was “It’s never too late”. It’s
never too late to get hooked on reading, to engage with reading and to nurture a love and passion for reading.
In this, the National Year of Reading at Mentone Grammar, our Library Team together with our MGRAs, hope to ignite this
passion in each and every member of the Mentone School Community!
International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is March 8 and we are having a special breakfast to celebrate at Mentone Grammar, featuring
Sam Lane from Channel 10 Before the Game and The Age. Come along and support this exciting new event, enjoy a delicious healthy breakfast with friends and family (bring your mum, grandmothers, aunties, sisters, cousins!) and support a
great cause – ‘UN Women Empowering Women in the Pacific’. Organise a table of your friends or family. Everyone of any
age or gender is welcome. Go to www.mentonegrammar.net for details and to book online. If you have any good ideas or
would like to get involved in some way with organising the breakfast, please contact Mrs Mayer in Marketing (upstairs Frogmore House).
94 Year 9 Program
The 94 class recently had some surfing lessons and one of the students, Patrick Nguyen, penned the following poem in
his journal to describe the experience.
SURFING
The tide was low,
the waves were down.
The sea was calm,
but not a frown.
All the boys were out for fun,
There was some surfing to be done.
It was only the very first day,
but it seemed as though we’ve been surfing since May.
The day was intense,
skill level quite high,
no-one heard moaning,
"its so cold, I'm gonna die!"
Overall it was fun,
surfing was sweet,
The privilege of surfing,
is always a treat.

A chance at a grand final berth for the Mentone Grammar 1st XI added an extra spring in our step for this week’s game.
This week we were drawn to play Assumption at Assumption, the longest trip in the AGSV. After a 7am two-hour bus
trip the boys were excited to take on last placed Assumption, however, we knew they are always a hard task at Home.
We lost the toss and were sent in to bat on a wet wicket. After a solid opening partnership of 26, Mentone continued to
lose wickets at key points in the game leaving us 9 for 100 off 42 overs. Fraser Maclaren opened the batting and batted
superbly for a well made 50. But a great 10th wicket stand between Rob Tunbridge and Tom Zanca added 40 runs leaving us at a respectable 140 which was something to defend. Some big hitting by Rob Tunbridge at the end left his score
at 38 and gave his confidence a boost.
Mentone had the perfect start with Will Carvill collecting his first wicket on the second ball of the innings. Early wickets
continued for the away side leaving Assumption 6 for 42 at the half way mark. Mentone kept bowling well, however, a
few good partnerships still gave Assumption a sniff. Some more good batting left the home side needing 20 to win from
eight overs with two wickets in hand. However, a great last spell from spearhead Rob Tunbridge and all-rounder Jake
Bloomer got Mentone over the line by seven runs. A dropped catch and a few missed run-outs allowed Assumption to
get much closer than what they should have. The best bowlers included Will Carvill (3 for 23), Rob Tunbridge (4 for 32),
Nick Huttley (1 for 17) and Jake Bloomer (1 for 26).
Along with this season-defining win, we need to win our next two games to cement a grand final spot. We need to keep
a level head as Peninsula and PEGS are always good cricketing schools and most importantly we need to play our best
cricket.
1st Tennis vs Assumption
The boys came out after a long break from holidays fresh and ready to pick up where they left off. With the debut of
new star Ben Myles, the team looked better than ever to run over the struggling Assumption team. Once again, leading
by example were the young guns Ollie Florent and Anthony Tamborriello winning comfortably in their doubles matches. After the doubles round was done and dusted, the boys had a comfortable lead of 8-0 going into the singles. Alex
Babanine got off to a strong start but was challenged throughout the whole match and eventually became the victor, 84. Debutant Ben Myles showed his stuff winning with ease in his very first match of a good looking career at Mentone.
As the boys come up against PEGS in the next round they will need to be at their best if they are to overcome arch rivals
and also title contenders. Preparation and commitment will put the boys over the line, if they are up for it!
Final Score Mentone 16, Assumption 0
