Vision Statement For Colonial Country Club
Colonial Country Club is dedicated to being a premier, private, family-oriented country club.
Colonial is committed to maintaining its facilities in a world class manner and investing in its staff, ensuring
that it will be the preferred country club with a local, regional and national reputation for excellence.
From
the Desk of… Michael Lawrence, General Manager & COO
Considering how small our family of Colonial managers and staff really
is compared to many companies, it is always tough to say good-bye to one
of our own, but that’s what we must do with Jayme Valdez! Many Members
have enjoyed the very personalized and attentive service Jayme has given to
those enjoying the Terrace Room and Fairway Lounge for the past nine
months, and she has unfortunately decided to take some time away from the
industry for a while. After discussing this with her family, she will take a
breather and treat herself to some well-earned time off. We wish Jayme well
and will miss her sweet energy and enthusiasm.
Faced with the replacement of a good manager, our Human Resources
Director Celeste Cathey set about looking for that perfect new hire…and
I believe she rose to the challenge.
Please welcome to the Colonial family Mr. Al Paez, formerly the owner
and operator and sometimes chef and waiter of Aventino’s Ristorante,
right off Camp Bowie on Winthrop Avenue. Over the past 27 years,
Fort Worth, and many Colonial members, have enjoyed the intimate and
comfortable dining experience of this neighborhood restaurant that had built
a loyal clientele that enjoyed north Italian “home-style” cooking. As I write
this, Al has already worked with Jayme for a week, learning members’ names
and observing Terrace Room service standards…it seems like a good marriage
so far. Many Colonial members have shared with me their positive experiences at Aventino’s and have said it feels like an old friend is meeting them
at the door.
If you are not aware of the convoluted trip that Al took to arrive in Fort
Worth, let me share it with you for a minute…by the way, his given name is
Alvaro, but only his momma calls him that! Originally from Columbia,
Al migrated with his mother to Queens, New York as an adolescent. Times
were tough as his father had passed away not many years before. But Al was
smart…he made good grades, and was awarded a full Mechanical Engineering scholarship at the University of Tennessee. Like many growing up in

Scott Mahaffey, Michael R. Thomas, Jr.
Queens and the boroughs of New York, Al and the Paez family were
surrounded by wonderful food experiences…while his Columbian mother
taught him the essence of South American cooking, his Italian grandmother
passed along her passion for northern Italian cuisine. And as you know,
northern Italian is famous for taking common food products available to
country people and turning them into culinary favorites.
After achieving his degree in mechanical engineering, he began work
with Lockheed in Fort Worth. His wife and sister-in-law wanted to open a
small restaurant, and Al helped them with the evening cooking and
management. When the first cook left, he took over all the cuisine, and slowly
built the reputation of their restaurant over the next 27 years. About two
years ago, Al was talked by family members into re-concepting Aventino’s
with fewer tables along with a new bar, décor and menu. His timing could
not have been much worse. As you know, restaurants of all sizes (and
especially the smaller non-chain variety) have taken a hard hit over the past
two years, and Aventino’s was yet another loss to the economy.
But what was a loss in the restaurant community of Fort Worth is
certainly a gain for Colonial Country Club. Several members I have spoken
to about Al have shared how he was so personal at Aventino’s and went out of
his way to ensure that his diners had a memorable experience. Our strategy is
to take his naturally easy-going style combined with attention to perfect
service, and combine that with the talent of Chef Michael Morabito’s for
creating the best food in the Metroplex (that’s right…the Metroplex).
Reviews of Aventino’s consistently rated them between four and five stars
with the emphasis on the service. Since the Terrace Room has wonderful
food already, this seems like a good marriage. Specifically, Al’s challenge is to
direct his new team to build upon the Terrace Room’s reputation for
top-quality food…to preserve the best parts of Terrace Room service…and
to fine-tune his service staff to achieve the next level in service at Colonial’s
fine dining restaurant.

Turf Talk
By Scott Ebers, CGCS, Golf Course Superintendent
March is generally the month when the “fever” hits many of us and we head
back out to the golf course. As a result, I generally field the same general
questions; namely, when is the Bermudagrass going to fill in? As I touched on
last month, we have a few new variables to account for this spring I thought
I would review.
In early spring the Bermudagrass greens up initially by using the energy it
has stored over the winter in the stems and rhizomes of the plant. Like a hibernating bear, the grass lives off its stored energy reserves until it can begin
“eating” or photosynthesizing later in the spring. As a result, the plant is not
really in full recovery mode and growing actively until temperatures, especially
nighttime temperatures, remain warm. This is why a protracted frost/green-up
cycle or a late freeze can exhaust the plants carbohydrate reserves and set it back
a week or two. It is also why keeping traffic off emerging green grass is perhaps
more important than protecting it in the winter when it is completely dormant.
This spring, we have three things complicating the predictability of spring
Bermudagrass green up: the pythium outbreak of last fall, the first low teen cold
snap in 10 years, and the wet winter we are having thus far. The most obvious
sign of the pythium outbreak of last fall is darker (wetter) looking turf in the
fairways. We had an unusually wet fall as a prelude to our unusually wet winter,
and the combination is not generally good for Bermudagrass. I am fairly
optimistic that while these areas may come out later and weaker than the
surrounding areas, I don’t think we will lose turf permanently. I am a little more
worried about the effects of our first good winter cold snap of a month ago. I am
almost certain we will see weaker Bermudagrass emergence this spring,
especially in areas like approaches, collars and any shaded area on the golf course.
And to further complicate matters, the constant rain and wet soils dramatically
increase the chance that plants weakened and damaged by the cold snap will
experience some rotting and decay from staying too wet too long. In short, while
not wanting to alarm anybody, and in realizing the hazards of prediction on a
golf course, I am more than a little nervous this year about the spring Bermudagrass green-up. By next month we should be getting a handle on this, and
unfortunately, if we do see significant winter kill, it will be apparent to all.
In early March, non overseeded tees are usually at their weakest stage as they
have been divoted up for five months without repair and they often look like
there is not much grass underneath (especially the par 3’s). Again, this year may
very well see some weaker tee emergence than last year, especially the shaded
tees, so we may do some select sodding on tees. There is a new dwarf Bermudagrass that is supposed to be more shade tolerant than 419 that I am trying to find
enough of to sod the persistently bad area on No.1 tee.
As usual, March will be a busy month, and by the end of the month we will
be putting in long hours and madly preparing for spring member play and the
tournament. Here’s hoping the rainy pattern will end and we avoid a late cold
snap. A late cold snap this year might well be devastating.
Dates to keep in mind: DryJect aerification and sand injection on March 8.
The DryJect machine injects sand four inches into the profile, so we can
actually modify the greens profile over time in a more desirable direction.
I became an even bigger fan of this technology this summer during our restoration. When we cut into our profile now to plug or do some repair, we always see
white “holes” filled with newer sand, the DryJect injection sites. This is a very
impressive demonstration of how much new sand is actually injected into the
profile, as “our” holes we make were not visible at all. This process does take
a bit more time, so we may be finishing up some holes on Tuesday March 9.
Regular aerification and topdressing will, like always, follow on March 15.
Remember, these dates are predicated on good weather, and if we miss a
Monday or two because of rain, we will have to make it up sometime during the
week and do the best we can in play. As always, your patience is appreciated.

In Full Swing
By Dow Finsterwald Jr., PGA Head Golf Professional
In Memoriam
The Board of Governors, members, and staff of
Colonial Country Club
extend their sincerest sympathy to the families of:
Jack Maloney, Jr.
Marian Millican
After one of the “longest” winters I can remember, the start of spring
promises to be a welcome sight. Grass will be turning green, tournaments
will be more abundant, and your golf shop will be full of those pretty colors
most of us like to wear. These reasons and the desire to improve your game
should encourage everyone to come out and see us (we have been awfully
lonely with all the poor weather).
December, January, and most of February have been very slow months
because of the weather. Normally we play roughly 4500 rounds in those
months, this year we are on pace to play about half that, which means we still
have some winter apparel that needs to be sold. We will price all winter items
to sell with discounts up to 60%. Come on out and help us make room for
all the spring apparel due to arrive any time.
This month the Bermudagrass makes its biggest transition of the year
with everything greening up (maximum fertilizer and temperatures
approaching ideal growing temperatures). To help the Bermudagrass
establish itself properly it is necessary for everyone to obey the cart signs,
ropes, and avoid worn or thin areas to the extent possible. With each of your
efforts, playing conditions will be improved for all members and guests.
March gets started with a Men’s Member-Member, March 6-7; the
format is a two-man scramble. We will shotgun the field at 8:45 A.M. on
Saturday and 1:30 P.M. on Sunday. A new concept this year is being able to
obtain information concerning each event through your personal email. That
information will be comprised of tee times, pairings, and results. This should
ensure everyone is kept abreast of each event. The only requirement is that
you provide us with your preferred email address and you will receive
your latest handicap updated every two weeks plus the aforementioned
information regarding each tournament. On March 26 we have the second
Member–Guest with shotguns at 8:30 A.M. and 1:30 P.M. These events are
very popular so sign up fast.
Golf is a game that requires continued learning to improve or even stay
at the level to which you are accustomed. Even the finest players in the world
take lessons every week. Instant results are rare but long-term results are
almost guaranteed. Take one lesson a month and spend a couple hours a week
working on your changes, and I promise your friends won’t recognize you
and you will be walking home with the cash. As you know each one of your
pros is trained and very capable of helping you to get to the next level (even
me). So if you are not happy with the way you are playing, give your favorite
pro a call.
Let’s all get ready for an event filled spring and do our part to keep the
course in as good of shape as possible, even it means taking an extra couple
of steps. Please do not be shy in letting us know what we can do to make this
the best club it can possibly be. Play well and keep swinging!

SPRING GOLF & FITNESS EXPO
SATURDAY, MARCH 20
DRIVING RANGE & PRACTICE FACILITIES
It appears as though our winter hibernation is coming to a close
and the staff at Colonial is pleased to announce the perfect
solution for your transition back into the golfing season.
On Saturday, March 20, representatives from the Pro Shop and
Fitness center will be hosting the Spring Golf and Fitness Expo
from 10:00 A.M.-2:00 P.M. at the driving range and practice
facilities. Manufacturers representing Titleist, Cobra,
TaylorMade, Nike, Ping, Cleveland, Callaway, and Mizuno
will be on-hand at the east end of the driving range with the
latest and greatest golf equipment. In addition, your
Colonial Fitness staff, along with special guest Brad Davis,
will be stationed at the “Irons Only” range tee to offer
golf specific fitness advice for 2010
Join us for this great day of fun that will also include raffle prizes,
competitions for children, and a food and beverage station at
the driving range. ALL members are encouraged to attend
this complimentary event and reservations are not necessary.
We hope to see you there!!!
ROLLS
AND
RULES
Ladies on the Links
By Jerry Wilkins
During the long stretch of bad weather, the golfers made the most of
it. Golf was played when weather permitted and on Playdays when we could
not play, we had our “Rolls and Rules” meetings with head Golf Pro Dow
Finsterwald, Jr., who answered questions concerning the golf rules. These
sessions were very informative and insightful. Thank you, Dow, for your
help and thanks to the pro shop for sending out hot chocolate on a cold January day to four golfers who were desperate to play.
The CWGA Board, chaired by Susan Gaston, met and finalized plans
for the Golf Clinic (Tuesday-Thursday, March 9-11) and the Opening Day
Scramble (Friday, March 12). Susan stressed she wants to make this a good
year for all our golfers. If you are a golfing member and would like to join
the Colonial Women’s Golf Association, please contact Susan Gaston.
The complimentary golf clinic is open to all levels of golfers and we
urge you to attend. Whatever your handicap, if you are new to the club, or
are beginning to play, there will be something for your individual needs. We
hope you will participate and take advantage of this free instruction. Again,
the clinic is March 9-11, 1:00-2:00 P.M. Call the golf shop for more
information. You may attend one, two or all three days...your choice. The
9-Hole Scramble completes the week on Friday, March 12. This is always
a fun season opener, followed by lunch, rain or shine.
We have a great association and want to welcome any and all new
golfers. Please check with Terry Marquardt who is in charge of the 9-Holers.
This flight is a great place for beginners or those who do not want to or have
the time to play 18 holes. Terry is perfect for this job and will be very
helpful and encouraging. You may email her at [email protected] to
learn more about the clinic and the Opening Day 9-Hole Scramble.
During this week, all the new golf apparel should be in so check out the
pro shop to see the exciting new spring colors and styles. A new look will
help you get in the mood and be ready for an exciting golf season.

Bill Ward’s team is in the process of installing soundboards behind the
ballast mounts in the indoor tennis facility to help alleviate the humming
noise many of you have noticed since we installed our new lighting this past
year. We hope this will help tremendously and we appreciate everyone’s
patience during this process!
March means league seasons are here and USTA and Interclub is in “full
swing!” Courts will be relatively full on Tuesday and Friday mornings so if
you are thinking about coming down to play, please call the tennis shop for
availability. We are thrilled to have (5) USTA teams playing out of here this
spring and hope to continue building on those. If you are interested in playing, please call the tennis shop for information on how to get involved.
As a reminder the No Racquets No Jackets Dinner is being held
Thursday, March 4 at 6:00 P.M. in the Terrace Room and will be followed by
the always fun Colonial Karaoke Night! If you would still like to attend, please
call the tennis shop to make your reservation and select your menu option.
The annual Pro-Am event will be April 9-10. Please mark your
calendars for this fun event. We will be offering our usual divisions this year:
Women’s 3.0, Women’s 3.0-3.5, Men’s 3.0-3.5 and Men’s Open. Sign up and
play with area pro’s for an entire day on Saturday. Friday evening will be the
Pairings Party and we will also be providing food and drinks all day Saturday.
Prizes for 1st place will be awarded in each division.
We will also be having a Margarita Mixer for our adults on Friday,
April 16. We will be using our NSTA (No Serious Tennis Allowed) format so
no matter your level sign up for this fun event!
Please watch for more information regarding a Tennis Expo, which will
involve swing analysis and fitness tips guaranteed to help your game!

By Alexis Groesch,
Special Events Manager
As I am sure you have noticed 2010 is off to a great start at Colonial with
our member events being very well attended and with more exciting, new events
coming up. Last month’s Egelhoff Wine Dinner was very well attended with
almost 60 members in attendance. Valentine’s Day, despite falling on a Sunday,
saw the same number of members enjoy an evening of dinner and dancing.
I believe this success can be attributed to creating exciting events, with food and
entertainment equal to or greater than the incomparable Colonial standards.
And the exciting news is these events and activities will not be decreasing any
time soon. Entertainment Committee Chairman Dr. Lee Anderson has put
together a great collection of members that represent each of our demographic
groups here at the club and everyone has one goal in mind. . . to make
Colonial Country Club our members’ first destination when looking for
something to do, whether it is for the family or themselves.
I am excited about our Ladies’ Luncheon Series and the speakers we have
scheduled for the upcoming months. On Thursday, March 11 we have
Sherree Bennett of the American Heart Association here to talk with us
about getting everyone heart healthy in 2010. On Thursday, April 8 we have
Melanie Barse Gobril of Barse Jewelry to share with us the story of how she
started Barse, where she gets the materials to make the jewelry, and give us an
opportunity to do a little shopping afterwards! We will take a short break in
May for the Crowne Plaza Invitational and then on Thursday, June 10 we will
celebrate the month’s birthstone with a return visit by Mike Brennan and
Ursula Imhof of “Love the Pearls.” Finally, we all love our homes to smell
wonderful, whether it’s like fresh roses, warm vanilla cookies, or a tropical
paradise. Join us on Thursday, July 8 with Kerri McCune of “Scentsy” the
newest rage in wickless candles and fragrances!
You have probably already read Dow’s article and noticed the promotion for
our first “Spring Golf & Fitness Expo” on Saturday, March 20 from
10:00 A.M.-2:00 P.M. This special event is open to ALL of our members,
Social and Resident alike. We will have food and drinks, but the best part is it
doesn’t cost anything to attend. We will have the top eight golf equipment
manufacturers here, including Titleist and Nike, along with a special Fitness
Station. Brad Davis, a personal trainer and TPI (Titleist Performance Instructor) will be on hand to talk about the best exercises and stretches golfers can do
to stay in the best possible shape. We will also have a putt-putt and chipping
contest on the putting green for our littlest members. We look forward to
seeing you out here.
12
Juniors – come celebrate the start of spring at this month’s Junior Member
Mixer on Thursday, March 25 from 6:00-7:30 P.M. This is a great opportunity to enjoy a casual evening at the Club getting to know your fellow members.
Easter is right around the corner, which means Peter Cottontail will be here
soon! Bring your children and celebrate at our annual Easter Egg Hunt on
Saturday, April 3 from 10:00 A.M.-12:30 P.M. The celebration starts with an
Easter egg hunt on the front lawn for our littlest members (through 12 years
old), followed by a small petting zoo, several different activities in the Clubhouse including cookie decorating and a DJ. We look forward to seeing you!
Remember to make your reservations for Easter Brunch early, as this
holiday usually sells out quickly. On Sunday, April 4 we are offering three
seating times for our members and guests: 11:00 A.M. and 1:30 P.M. in the
South Wing and Terrace Room and at 12:30 P.M. in the Cork Room for
$32.95++ for Adults and $16.95++ for Children 4-12 years old. The buffet for
children 3 and under is complimentary. We look forward to celebrating with you!
We are excited to welcome Bart O’Brien of the O’Brien Estate Winery in
Napa for another special wine dinner on Wednesday, April 7 at 6:30 P.M. The
O’Brien’s have such a love for wine they have created the “Romance Portfolio”
made up with Romance, Seduction and Attraction. Bart’s Seduction wine has
also received 92 points from Wine Enthusiast. Be sure to make your reservations
early and invite your fellow members to join you in your love for wine!
Our Culinary Theme Night is taking a break this month, but for April
break out your bibs and don’t forget your beads. That’s right, we are bringing
back the very popular Crawfish Boil on Thursday, April 22 at 6:30 P.M.
with Jay B and the Zydeco Posse bringing the sounds of Zydeco music back
to the Club.
Spring is almost here, and after this chilly winter, it will be nice to get back
outside. We have some great events coming up. I look forward to seeing you
around the Club!
From the Desk of…
continued from page 3
If you haven’t enjoyed the Terrace Room lately, you’re missing something special…I promise you.
And in closing…for several of my columns, I have promised several new
capital projects, and House Chair Rob Doby has helped push through some
new projects that will have gotten underway by the time you read this, with
several more on the way. Specifically, the infamously unreliable steam room
in the Men’s Locker Room is being replaced…actually, the steam boiler
and pipes infrastructure is being totally replaced, and the steam room proper
is receiving a facelift. The “rubberized” tile flooring in that area will be
replaced with non-slip tile designed for wet areas, and at the same time, new
“rain forest” shower-heads will be installed for a better experience. And, as
I have written about earlier, the renovation and conversion of the
Outrigger Pool dining room into a Fitness Studio was also approved.
See you around the Club…

A Little Vineyard History…
From 1928-1978 the Costello family ran a plum orchard on the 40 acres of land now known as O’Brien Estate.
In 1994 the vineyards were attacked by the Phyloxera louse and re-planted in 1995 to 22 acres of Chardonnay
and 11 acres of Merlot. The vineyard has since been re-grafted from its original configuration of
33 acres of Chardonnay to its current configuration of 15 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, 4 acres of Cabernet Franc,
9 acres of Merlot, 4 acres of Chardonnay and 1 acre of Sauvignon Blanc. The average yield is approximately
2.5-3 tons per acre; the vineyards are substantially farmed without the use of pesticides or herbicides,
following organic farming practices with the exception of the type of sulfur used for mildew control.

Dear fellow members:
A couple months ago, I included in this space a letter inviting all our members, especially the
new ones, to serve with me and other members as volunteers for our PGA TOUR event. After
all, we were reminded at our New Member Reception earlier this year that our prestigious
PGA TOUR event is one of the main reasons you joined this great club. Several of you have
contacted me and been placed with committees. Thank you! For those of you still thinking
about it, please know that it is not too late to get involved.
We recognize the demands on everyone’s time with career and family, but our Tournament
Committee welcomes the opportunity to add members to our incredible volunteer team.
What a tremendous opportunity this is for you to learn the amazing amount of work and
coordination that goes into such a world-class event, and to increase your membership pride
in this tournament even more. We will find an opportunity that fits your schedule. If your
goal is to ultimately become a Tournament Committee member, this is the first step in that
journey. If your goal is to enjoy camaraderie with fellow members while contributing to the
success of your club’s event, we welcome that, as well.
Our tournament is unique in that it is conducted by the host club and our members. This structure ensures that we have the most respected and dependable Tournament Committee on Tour.
The PGA TOUR, its players, sponsors, our community and fans recognize this commitment.
I would be happy to meet with interested CCC members, individually or in
a group, in order to summarize different volunteer opportunities and find the
right fit for each individual. Please contact Tracy Childers at the Tournament
Office (817) 927-4277 to schedule a meeting. I look forward to hearing
from many of you!
Sincerely,
Chuck Scherer
