From
the Desk of… Michael Lawrence, General Manager & COO
As I sit down to write this column, I can brag
with considerable pride concerning this week’s “soft”
opening of our revitalized and completely renovated Fitness Center.
Member feedback has been extremely positive, and many have looked upon
the renovated facility with awe and perhaps some earnest surprise that it is as
well done as it is. Frankly, I am not surprised that the finished product came
out so well, as there are many Members and staff who have contributed to
this two-year project. Firstly, we wish to recognize the committee leadership
of Jeff Moten and Gale Johnston in their roles as Fitness Committee
Chairs…Jeff from 2006 through 2008 and Gale for this past year. They have
provided the Board of Governors and management with the vision to make
our fitness and wellness program service oriented and rightfully competitive
in this market, as clearly we had lost considerable ground among our fellow
country and city clubs in this area.
After the Board decision was made to proceed with renovation, next
came discussions with Steve Tharrett, an internationally experienced
fitness and wellness consultant who formerly was responsible for all
fitness and tennis facilities within ClubCorp for more than 20 years. Steve’s
proposal for construction, build-out specs and equipment was accepted by the
Fitness Committee and Board, and immediately after this year’s Tournament,
construction began. At this point Bill Ward and his team of hard-working
professionals stepped up to the task at hand. Anyone who has ever done
refurbishment or new construction to an old house or building knows from
experience that there will always be surprises in those old walls! The fitness
center had its share of surprises…some not so good, but a couple were not
so bad, either.
For example, the ceiling was full of old telephone lines, wiring, and cable
left over from many years of Tournaments, and the roof had several leaks
that needed to be repaired…but, the original flooring was (and remains)
terrazzo! This was a major discovery for us because terrazzo is one of the most
beautiful and durable floors ever made…and one that would be very
expensive to recreate today. First, the masons that built our floor constructed

a solid, level concrete foundation 3 to 4 inches deep. Before this layer set, the
terrazzo workers partially embed metal divider strips in the concrete, and in
our floor the dividers are solid brass, the most desirable metal for terrazzo
installation. For the final top layer, the terrazzo masons blended and placed
into each of the panels a mixture of fine marble chips with brown-earth tones
(a predominate decorating color of the 1960’s and 70’s). A lightweight roller
was then used to even out the entire surface, and a diamond-imbedded
polisher was used to polish the floor. Terrazzo floors made in this way have
an impermeable finish, higher strength than other concrete flooring, and less
susceptibility to cracking. This must be true because we have not found any
cracks in this more than 40-year-old floor! Terrazzo flooring was originally
invented by Venetian construction workers who mixed goat milk in with the
marble chips left over from marble carving with clay. The goat milk gave
the floor a marble-like sheen when the floor was wet because it acts as a sealer
and preserves the look.
Many may not have known that the space now called the Fitness
Center was built as a teen and youth activity center in the mid-1960’s…
In the days before the development of University, Hulen, City View,
Sundance and malls, the Bon Bon Room was THE PLACE to hang out.
Competing interests for teens and the emergence of exercise and fitness
centers for men and women warranted converting the teen room into
the Fitness Center, and except for occasional additions in the equipment
inventory, has not had any facility updating since then.
At any rate, Bill’s team set about reworking the facility in preparation for
the equipment inventory as ordered by Clubhouse Manager Markus Rentzing.
In summary, the center can boast the following enhancements…
- the solid front doors were replaced with more welcoming “open” glass doors;
- reception desk in front of the entrance to welcome members;
- members will be greeted, offered water and towel, and introduced to the center;
- director’s desk in the same area to assist the “welcomer;”
- an improved ladies’ room will feature a changing area and day lockers;
- the improved men’s room will also feature day lockers;

Turf Talk
By Scott Ebers, CGCS, Golf Course Superintendent
I think of September and March as bracketing the three major seasons on
the golf course: the good, the bad, and the ugly (play Sergio Leone music
here). March through September contains the hardest work and the longest
hours. In March, we are ramping up for spring, which always brings a steady
increase in hours and effort to get the golf course “filled in.” Fertilizer fills the
air and sod trucks begin arriving as we strive to repair any of the Bermudagrass that did not make the winter. March also ushers in the spring member
golf season, followed by the Crowne Plaza Invitational preparation, and the
tournament itself. March through May completes the “bad,” and it’s not
really bad, it’s just a lot of work over a long period of time.
What comes next is ugly, sort of. After the last ounce of adrenaline is
drained out of our bodies by the final day of the tournament, we get to wake
up the following Monday and fight through the toughest single week of the
year, the post tournament week where we tear down the tournament infrastructure, put up all the fans, aerify almost everything in sight, and try to put
it back together again for the weekend. But of course, that is just one week
of ugly... we might call that week “unattractive leaning strongly towards ugly
under the wrong circumstances.” What follows is the truly ugly, the summer
Bentgrass season where we slog through three months of hot and sunny, hot
and wet, hot and dry, and sometimes if we are lucky - hot, wet, dry, and sunny
all in one day; in short, all the elements that make up our glorious Texas
weather. This is the truly ugly, and every summer is ugly with Bentgrass, even
on a relatively cool summer like 2007, which was more pet bulldog ugly… if
it’s your dog you can convince yourself that it’s more cute than ugly, but that
still don’t make it purdy. (Please don’t send me cute pictures of your bulldog!)
The weather in September is transitional. The first part of the month is a
lot like summer, and I am sure we all remember Labor Day weekends that get
into the 100’s. Inevitably, however, we are transitioning from the ugly to the
good and this can be as dramatic as the jaw dropping make-over that you really
have a hard time believing is the same person. For sometime in September, the
first good, sweet, clean, cold front makes its way down through the heartland, and we go from 100 to 85 degrees for a high temperature and even
better, the low goes from a sultry 80 to a crisp 62 degrees. Suddenly we live
in the land of the “good.” If you happen to be out on the course on such a
morning and you hear singing or yelling, do not be alarmed, it’s just me
ushering in the, “I can start breathing again season,” closely followed by the
“Hey, this job can be kind of fun season” which often lasts through the dead
of winter up till March, when we begin again the, well… you know.
So… here’s to the arrival of the “good,” may it find us early in September
and hang around for a long, glorious fall season.

MATCH PLAY
Saturday-Monday
September 5-7
Surely everyone has had enough summer. I know Scott Ebers and his
staff are still trying to stave off the effects of one of the toughest summers.
We in the golf shop have felt the effects, as well, but now that summer is
in our rear view mirror, it is time to focus on the upcoming fall
tournament schedule.
You will probably run into some bentgrass repair work on the greens
this month. Fortunately it is confined mostly to the edges so it should not
affect your golf game much at all, but please be courteous if you run into a
maintenance worker repairing an area.1427 Also, try to avoid walking on any
newly repaired area if possible so it has time to establish well.
With the arrival of the first cold front (hopefully really soon) comes fall
golf at Colonial.
From the middle of September until the middle of December, the golf
course is in its best shape. We have the Roland Harper Match Play
Championship September 5-7, and the Senior Club Championship
September 25-27. The Mixed Foursome will be played September 20 at
1:00 P.M. and the C.W.G.A. Ryder Cup will be contested September 24-25.
The Roland Harper Match Play Championship serves as a qualifier for
the Maxwell Cup. The winner and runner up of the Championship Flight
and the winner of the First and Second Flights will be eligible for this year’s
Maxwell Cup at Prairie Dunes. With all these activities there is no reason not
to come out to the club.
With very little play in August there is an excess of inventory in the pro
shop. The only way to get rid of it is to discount it until it is gone, so plan
on discounts ranging from 30-70% off. Thanks to everyone’s patronage this
past year we had one of our best merchandise sales years in several years.
Have a great fall golfing season and we look forward to seeing you on the
course and in the shop.

DEADLY GOLF TRAP…
MIXED FOURSOME HOT TAMALE RESULTS
Jim and Bob are golfing. Jim slices his ball deep into a wooded ravine and
climbs down in search of it. Jim spots something shiny. As he gets closer, he
realizes that the shiny object is an 8-iron in the hands of a skeleton lying near
an old golf ball. Jim calls out to Bob in an agitated voice, "Hey Bob, I got
trouble down here." Bob calls out, "What's the matter, Jim?" Jim shouts back,
"Throw me my 7-iron. You can't get out of here with an 8-iron."

Weighty Matters
Welcome to your newly renovated Fitness Center.
If you haven’t already stopped by for a visit or a workout, we hope you make
a special trip just to see what is new and exciting. Brand new to the Fitness
Center is Star Trac treadmills and bike with integrated TV’s and I-pod
connections. We also have new PreCor Elliptical EFX’s, also with their own
built in TV’s. Our strength training line is by Free Motion and we compliment those individual pieces with a Smith machine and dumbbells.
Our new, private pilates room is equipped with two (2) reformers and an
EXO chair. Not only will you workout in style, but now you can change
comfortably in the updated bathrooms which include lockers for daily use
and a private changing room. All of this would not be so fantastic to use if
it wasn’t for the behind the scenes renovations such as a new AC and sprinkler system, and tinted windows. Thanks to Bill Ward and his crew for all
their hard work tearing down and setting back up. We will soon begin work
on the Fitness Studio, turning it into a designated group exercise room with
new flooring, sound system, mirrors and storage for equipment. Classes will
continue to meet in the clubhouse until completion of this project.
Boot Camp will still meet in the Fitness Center. We hope to see everyone
soon and if you need help getting started, don’t hesitate to call and make an
appointment with a trainer. We’ll be happy to set you up on a workout
designed to fit your needs.

Thank you to all those kids who participated in the Junior Exchange play day with
Mira Vista and Rivercrest on Friday, August 14. These events are a great opportunity for our
juniors to get some valuable match experience and have a great time doing so! Please watch
for upcoming play days with area clubs.
As a reminder, we are hoping to kickoff the QuikStart program in September and want
to stress the importance of this program to anyone interested in getting their kids involved
in tennis. This program is designed for kids 6-10 years old and allows them the opportunity
to start playing tennis quickly. Mini courts are created across the court and foam balls are
used in an effort to make the game much easier to play and thus more enjoyable for the
kids. Don’t miss out on a great program to build your child’s motor skills and confidence,
in addition to developing their tennis skills! Please call one of the tennis professionals for
more information regarding this wonderful program if you are interested.2130 Volunteer
parents are needed as well so if you are willing to assist we would greatly appreciate it.

beginner ladies. The winner will advance to San Antonio

Calendar…
By Alexis Groesch,
Special Events Manager
Yep. . .I mentioned it in last month’s article and now it’s official . . .summer
is over and school is back in session! Have no worries, though, there is plenty
happening at Colonial in the coming weeks and months to keep all of us busy!
On Monday, September 7, we will celebrate Labor Day and all the workers in this country. . .and in this city! We will also celebrate the end of summer, as the pool will close until next year. Bring your family and friends to the
pool and enjoy a special buffet, live music with DJ Mikey B and some great
fun with pool games.
For those ladies who were not able to attend June’s Ladies’ Luncheon with
Mike Brennan and “Love the Pearls,” I have some exciting news for you. . .On
Thursday, September 3, Mike will be back with the largest
selection of pearl jewelry in one location at one time (at prices of up to 75%
off retail, of course). He will start the evening with a presentation of
“An inside Look into the Pearl World.” So, invite your significant other and/or
friends and enjoy dinner and a fun evening at the club learning
about one of the oldest gemstones. And of course, our complimentary gift
to all of the ladies who attend. . .and pair of black pearl stud earrings!
Speaking of the ladies, be sure to make your reservations for this month’s
Ladies’ Luncheon Series. On Thursday, September 17, Dave Lieber, the
“Watchdog” of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and author of “Watchdog
Nation” will be here to tell his story of “Moving to Texas: Is the Bark Worse than
the Bite?” This will be a great afternoon. . . I look forward to seeing you there.
Don’t forget about Entertainment Night in the Terrace Room. Food and
Beverage Manager Jayme Valdez has booked Colonial favorite, harpist Gonzalo Mata on Friday, September 25 from 7:00-10:00 P.M. Be sure to make
your reservations early and enjoy another fantastic performance.
We have also made a few changes in the Terrace Room that will take
effect this month. Birthday Night, which has historically been celebrated on
Thursday’s, will now be celebrated on Saturday’s! This is a great opportunity
for you to bring your spouse, significant other, or family and have a special
evening at the Club without having to hurry home for work the next day. In
addition, we have moved Karaoke Night, which was hosted on the first
Thursday of the month to the first Friday of the month. Again, another great
opportunity to enjoy an evening at the Club and not have to rush home for
work the next day.
Finally, be sure to mark your calendar for our next two upcoming
Culinary Theme Nights. On Friday, September 18 at 6:30 P.M. we will
have our “Beale Street Blues Barbecue” with live music provided by blues
band Revolving Door. Get a group of friends together and join us for an
evening on the patio with some great barbecue and some serious blues music!
Be sure to bring your pipe and detective’s cap when joining us on
Thursday, October 29 at 6:30 P.M. for our “Murder Mystery” Culinary
Theme Night. Invite your friends and join special guests as the Murder
Mystery Players for a very exciting and mysterious evening at the club. . .
and see if you can decide “whodunit.”
And of course, we can’t forget that September marks the start of football
season. . .which means tailgating parties. If you haven’t had a chance to visit
the website to check-out our 2009-10 Tailgating Menu, please be sure to do
so. Chef Morabito has made several changes that are sure to make your
12
tailgating party the place to be! Contact Director of Catering Julie Brauer
to book your party.
As always, I look forward to seeing you around the club!
From the Desk of…
continued from page 3
- the reception area features solid bamboo flooring;
- completely new, state-of-the-art aerobics and resistance machines;
- all new Smith Machine and free weights with Mondo flooring;
- new double-paned energy efficient “e-glass” for all windows;
- new ceiling and energy efficient lighting;
- conversion of the manager’s office to a reformer pilates room;
- new carpet on the steps leading to the locker rooms below;
- air conditioning vents were moved from the center of the room to
“wash” the windows…this prevents drafts and is more energy efficient.
Having a great facility is certainly something to be proud of…but that
is not the end of the story. General managers in the club business like to say,
“it’s not the brick and mortar…it’s the people”. That’s one way of saying
that great service, and not necessarily state-of-the-art equipment, makes the
difference between a positive experience and one that is best soon forgotten. To that end, we have some work to do. You can expect to see new
service standards over the next few weeks in the Fitness Center…more on
that will be shared in future columns.
In closing on the Fitness Center, the Club saved many, many dollars due
to the broad talents of Bill Ward and his team…painter and sheetrock
installer Charlie Smith…and Robert Antis and Mark Beverly performing
general construction duties in demolition, HVAC, electrical, carpentry,
punch list finishing, with assistance by Tommy Stewart (who was primarily
taking care of other Clubhouse projects). Thank you again, Bill, Charlie,
Robert, Mark and Tommy!
The first capital project for the next fiscal year that will be presented to
the Board will be the refurbishment and renovation of the 19th
Hole…House Committee Chair Dr. Lee Anderson and the members of
his Committee approved the draft of management’s plan to renovate the
flooring, ceiling, and bar area of the 19th…replacing the current tables with
the same table as in the Cork Room…adding televisions with new satellite
feeds…installation of new window treatment…and complete refurbishment
of the bar area as was done in the Fairway Lounge. Similar renovations of
the Ladies Locker Room and the Golf Shop should follow in the spring.
By now, you have all noticed the new blue spacing lines in the Member
parking lots…specifically the pool and south lots closest to the Clubhouse,
and the “horseshoe” spaces surrounding the front lawn, have been painted
“Colonial” blue. The program was approved by Dr. Anderson and the House
Committee and then the Board with the intention of providing Members
with enough parking during those times when guests of other Members
might be taking spaces close to the Club. Our valet have been trained to
valet Members and guests in the far south parking lot, and not within the
blue spaces, and Catering Director Julie Brauer will inform catering events
of the restricted parking. Of course, Members may park within either blue,
or white, lined spaces. It may take a little while for everyone to “get the
word”, but we are optimistic that this new program will help…see you
around the Club!
