In last month’s article, I shared some of the “statistical reports”
Management looks at to gauge the overall support of the membership for the
Cork Room. My purpose was to let the membership see how Cork Room
“cover count” has steadily grown…even during the Recession. But…we have
additional research I hope you find interesting as well. Some members have
asked, “Has the revenue increased …or has it decreased?” It’s fair to assume if
cover counts go up, then revenue would also go up. And, in fact, that is true.
It’s also conventional wisdom to assume prices would also go up. After all,
everything else has gone up over the past four or five years…right? In reality,
prices have not gone up, and the average members are spending has stayed
pretty much the same for the past four years.
But, we did not have precise proof, so I asked Frank Scarpello, Director of
Restaurants, to once again go into our revenue reports for the factual answer.
He did a study comparing Cork Room “revenue” to “number of covers”
determining the “revenue-per-cover”. His study, in fact, proved the average
“revenue-per-cover” has not fluctuated much over the past four years.
For example…
In 2007, 48,794 Members dined in the Cork Room…with an average
“revenue-per-cover” of $12.89.
In 2008 (pre-Recession for us), there were 52,410 covers…an increase of
3,616 covers…with an average “revenue-per-cover” of $12.38 (a 4% drop).
In 2009 (definitely Recession for us), the Cork Room served 52,441
Members…virtually the same as the pre-Recession period, which was a good
thing! The average “revenue-per-cover” was $12.25 (a 5% drop from 2007).
Please note these years are our “fiscal year” which begins August 1 and
ends July 31 of each calendar year.
In 2010 (post-Recession, if you believe the government!), 55,444 Members
joined us in the Cork Room, and the average check was $12.70, which is still
lower than 2007.
So, here are the facts…
1. The average Cork Room meal (adding breakfast, lunch and dinner) is
less than it was in 2007.
2. Colonial Members have steadily supported the Cork Room during the
Recession.
So, how was this done? The answer is simple, but getting there required
the teamwork of a lot of managers and staff. Your Cork Room management
team has provided the membership with quality meals prepared by culinary
professionals…a menu with constantly changing selections and variety…service
by friendly and knowledgeable staff…in a pleasant and clean environment…
with pricing to fit every budget. And, as mentioned previously, there will be
no price increases this next year…and the buffets are all priced 20% less than
last year, so come on in!
Alexis Groesch and the Historical Committee are planning a year full of
events and special celebrations during our 75th Anniversary, so stayed tuned as
she makes various announcements throughout the upcoming months.
For example, Committee chair Ben Matheson and committee member
Mike McMahan have created a brand new display in the Hogan Museum (next
to the Living Room) linking Colonial’s most famous golfing member to the
nation’s most famous golf tournament – the Masters at Augusta National Golf
Club. Here’s the story…among the rich traditions and historical markers at
Augusta is a bronze plaque dedicated in 1958 to commemorate Ben Hogan’s
legendary score for four rounds of 274 during the 1953 Masters Tournament.
For decades, Augusta’s Hole #12 has certainly been one of the most widely
recognized and popular gallery locations in professional golf. Along side the
much photographed Rae’s Creek bridge that connects #12 fairway to the
green, Augusta placed the bronze plaque, recognizing the course record Hogan
had achieved five years earlier. This was a special monument for a professional
sportsman, as there are only two other bronze plaques in situ at Augusta…one
for Byron Nelson at Hole #13 and another for Gene Sarazen at Hole #15.
Through the efforts of Mr. Matheson, the management of Augusta arranged
for an exact replica made in the same bronze alloy by the same foundry at 80%
of original size to be commissioned for the enjoyment of Colonial’s membership.
Such a request had never been made before so consequently several months of
negotiation were required between Augusta’s management and Mr. Matheson
before the 80–pound plaque was finally delivered to Fort Worth. At that point,
Mike McMahan contributed to the completion of the project with the custom
construction of a specially lighted display cabinet, which now holds the plaque.
Augusta contributed a photo of the original plaque were it lies next to Rae’s
Creek bridge. Speaking on behalf of the Historical Committee, Ben Matheson
and Mike McMahan, all members are encouraged to view this newest addition
to the Hogan Room and enjoy the connections of your club to the rich historical
heritage of golf.
We also have accolades for the Historical Committee and their continuous
involvement and leadership in the creation of Colonial’s 75th Anniversary book.
Over the past couple of years the Committee has worked with Houston golf
historian and author Fran Trimble on collecting an impressive collection of
articles, interviews and photos telling the many different tales of Colonial’s
past 75 years. Golf is more often than not the topic of discussions, but
the Committee has also focused on the Club’s heritage of the many tennis
championships once played here…the diving competitions hosted at our
pool…and the fact Colonial was at the center of Fort Worth’s social calendar.
Many Members may not know the current Clubhouse was actually rebuilt
following a fire that destroyed the original clubhouse in 1953. Also included in
this commemorative piece are rare photographs of Colonial’s founder, Marvin
Leonard, with Ben Hogan. This coffee table sized work, will be available for
purchase in the golf shop beginning in December, just in time for Christmas. It
is an excellent opportunity for Colonial Members, young and old, to re-discover
Colonial’s rich contributions to Fort Worth society, and the incredible weaving
of this club into the historical fabric of professional and amateur golf.
Finally, I would remise if I didn’t thank our Colonial Legends’ Dinner
committee for a job well done bringing back our newly resurrected annual
Legend’s Dinner, recognizing the great champions and contributors of golf.
This year’s honoree, Mr. Lee Trevino, won the Colonial Invitational in 1976
and 1978 and was the fifth golf great to receive Colonial’s “Distinguished
Sportsman Award”. Returning after a hiatus of sixteen years, this year’s
event inscribes Mr. Trevino among a short list of golf legends, including Ben
Hogan (1989), Byron Nelson (1990), Harvey Penick (1993) and Gary Player
(1994). Attendees enjoyed an incredible menu created by Chef Morabito, who
delighted every palete with his version of chicken fried lobster tails partnered
with the best tasting tenderloin in the state. The culmination of the evening
was listening to Mr. Trevino share his first-hand experiences of the professional
golf circuit during his championship period in the 1970’s and 1980’s. If you’ve
ever heard him speak, you know everyone greatly enjoyed his story telling,
still vibrant and full of energy and impish delivery. The Committee is already
begun working on next year’s event, and we know it will continue to grow as a
event you will want to attend.

Webster’s defines “family” as (1) a group of individuals living under one
roof and usually under one head: household; (2) a group of persons of common ancestry: clan; (3) a group of people united by certain convictions or a
common affiliation: fellowship. This time of year is always centered around
family and activities the family can do together. At Colonial, we celebrate
our family at the Club year-round and look forward to celebrating some of
the more traditional family events with you in the coming months.
Ladies, we are excited to welcome back Amy Goodson, CPA Faculty Member and Ben Hogan Sports Medicine Dietician on Wednesday, November
17 from 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM for our Ladies’ Luncheon Series. Ms.
Goodson will discuss how to enjoy the holidays and still keep our girlish
figures! NOTE: Starting in January 2011, the Ladies’ Luncheon Series
will move to the third Wednesday of each month. Be sure to watch for more
information on the exciting speakers scheduled in the new year!
This month, we celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 25. In an effort to accommodate our membership,
we have additional reservation times for our annual Thanksgiving Buffet 11:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 1:00 PM and 1:30 PM
in the South Wing and Terrace Room and 12:00 PM in the Cork Room.

Also, this month we welcome Annye Townsend of Willow House
(formerly Southern Living Home) for our Ladies’ Night Out on
Thursday, November 4 from 6:30-8:30 PM. Make plans to
enjoy a few cocktails with your friends while you look at some
great home furnishings. Remember to take this opportunity to
start your holiday shopping!
Another family tradition at Colonial is the annual Santa Brunch. On
Sunday, December 5 we are hosting Santa and Mrs. Claus, along with
some of their special workers, for a special buffet. Reservations are available
at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM in the South Wing and Terrace Room and 12:00
PM in the Cork Room. Again, reservations may be made online at www.
colonialfw.com or at the Front Desk.
It’s never too early to make plans for ringing in the New Year
and this year is no different. On Friday, December 31 we
have several different New Year’s Eve celebrations planned.
Our “Early Bird” celebration in the Cork Room from 5:008:00 PM has been very popular and with the menu Chef Morabito is creating, I know reservations will fill quickly. Members will enjoy a three-course
menu, with choice of entrée, from $25.95++ - $34.95++/person. For
those members who want to enjoy a quick evening together, the Terrace
Room will be open for reservations between 6:00-9:00 PM with a special
a la carte menu. Finally, last year we brought back the “Ringing in the
New Year” celebration in the ballroom and received a great response. This
year’s event from 7:30 PM – 1:00 AM for $90++/person will feature casino games (from 7:30-9:30 PM), live entertainment by Mars Hill, amazing
food stations throughout the evening and an open bar! Of course, all of our
celebrations will include a champagne toast and favors. We look forward
to ringing in 2011 with you!
Back by popular demand is our Concealed Handgun Class with Sgt.
Keith McGuire of the Fort Worth Police Department. Sgt. McGuire will
be here on Wednesday, November 3 from 5:00-9:00 PM and Saturday,
November 6 from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM for $95/person. Members and
their accompanied guests registering for a new license must attend both
classes, however, those that are renewing their license ($80/person) only
need to attend the Saturday class. We are also offering a boxed meal for
$10++/person/day for those interested.
Last month, we started the “18th Deck Social” which was very well received. These socials are open to all of our members and a great way to
enjoy the Club. Make plans to attend our next event on Friday, November 19 from 5:30-7:00 PM. Reservations are not required. For our Junior
Members, make plans to attend this month’s Young Member Social on
Wednesday, November 17 from 6:00-7:30 PM.

As I celebrate my one year anniversary here at Colonial I look back on all of the accomplishments
we have made.
Monday Fitness Center hours were extended. We are now open an additional 2 hours
closing at Noon on Mondays. Eight new Group Exercise classes have been added to our schedule.
We now offer everything from Zumba to TRX to yoga and Pilates. Our Fitness Staff continues to
grow! All of our staff are certified through various national organizations and are highly qualified
to help you adhere to your fitness program. Come by and visit our personal training staff to
help you maintain your personal goals over the holidays. Colonial Performance Academy (CPA)
began in January with the goal of connecting members to local fitness, medical and nutrition
professionals in an effort to improve your health and wellness. To date we have held 5 different
workshops covering everything from improving your golf swing to nutrition tips on the run. We also
have a steady group of golfers personal training with Brad Davis, our Titleist Performance Institute
certified golf professional. CPA Faculty members Randall Hunt and Robert Clark have been busy
establishing the most effective training program I have seen, and it is all happening at our Fitness
Center! Through their company Athletic Apex, Robert and Randall have assessed, trained and
improved the physical conditions of 20 Colonial Members and staff to date, with new clients each
day! Through their signature programs Tennetics, Golfnetics and Bionetics, Colonial Members are
improving their performance in golf, tennis and personal health and wellness. Stop by the Fitness
Center and meet these two very talented gentlemen and how they can help you!
CPA activities for 2011 are already in the works so stay tuned for details! Fitness workshops
for members were held throughout the year. 120 These workshops addressed specific training
equipment in the Fitness Center and how to use it properly and safely. Lastly, we have begun to
inject fitness related program enhancements to regular club activities. The swim team participated in
circuit training during their regular practice sessions. We also added a fitness class during Sports
Camp this summer as part of their regular schedule.
All of these activities and services have affected the growth in our Fitness Center and Group
Exercise attendance in a very positive manner and have helped us work toward one very important
goal: to help all members of Colonial connect to the Fitness Center in a personal way and to
improve your health and wellness through quality programs and services that focus on adherence.
We are hosting Meet the Trainer Days this month to connect you to our Personal Training
staff here at the Fitness Center. A personal trainer will be available for questions/advice and to
demonstrate different exercises on specific days and times throughout the month. Please call the
Fitness Center for dates and times.
Yoga for Men, a six-week yoga series developed especially for active men, will begin the first
week of November. Lauren Doeren, our new yoga instructor, will be leading this class. Please call
the Fitness Center for more details or to register.
Don’t forget!
The Fitness Center will be open Thanksgiving Day from 7:00 AM to 12 Noon. As the
holidays approach, it gets harder to keep up with your daily exercise activities. Maintain an average
of 5 days per week of 20 – 30 minutes of exercise and you’ll make it to New Year’s Day feeling

I’d like to take this opportunity to speak about the Bionetics program
we have through our Fitness Center. Those of you who attended the workshop in August were educated in how limitations in our body due to lack
of strength and/or flexibility can affect our tennis swing, our movement on
the court and our ability to recover and avoid injury. Since that workshop,
I have enrolled in the Bionetics program and fully attest to its effectiveness.
I have been amazed at how much stronger I feel after just a few workouts
and what it has not only meant to my tennis game, but also to my overall
health on and off the court. I strongly encourage all of you who are serious
about improving your game to enroll in this program through our Fitness
Center. You will notice a difference in how much stronger you feel on and
off the tennis court.
Congratulations to Colonial members Rudi Toler and Cathy Hayes
whose USTA Senior 3.0 team won the Texas Sectional tournament in Tyler
and will be representing Texas at the USTA National Championships in
Indian Wells, CA. We are all proud of you and good luck!!!

KiDS KoRNER
Thank you to all our kids who participated in the QuickStart Tennis
Tournament on October 30. We had a great turnout and several of our
juniors were exposed to this exciting and fun format. If you are not familiar
with QuickStart tennis, it is a USTA sponsored program designed to make
tennis easier for kids. Matches are played on smaller courts with lower nets
and large, foam balls which slows the game down and makes it very easy for
them to rally. This is a great way for your child to learn this wonderful sport
and have a great time doing it!
We will be offering a Holiday Tennis Camp for juniors December
28-30 from 1:30-3:30 PM each day. This camp will be open to juniors 8-15
years old (8-10 yr. olds and 11-15 yr. olds). Please call the tennis shop for

With daylight saving time ending on November 7, golf in the morning makes more sense. November starts with a very exciting event, followed by our most popular one-day guest day the following Friday. The remainder of the month is wide open for member play. When not playing the
course, come by and check out the large selection of fall and winter apparel
just in time to find that perfect gift for the special person in your life.
This year we are going to revisit the Men’s Colonial Ryder
Cup. On November 5-7, we are going to play a Ryder Cup style
event with Matthew Blake and myself as team captains and the
format mirroring the real Ryder Cup. This event will begin at 5:30
PM Friday in the 19th Hole with a team draft. On Saturday we
will have tee times starting at 9:00 AM. The matches will play
nine holes with a best ball format and nine holes with an alternate
shot format. On Sunday we will shotgun at 12:00 PM and have
individual matches. The entry deadline is 4:00 PM on November
4. Each day we will have beer and snacks for all contestants. The
entry fee is $50 per person.
On November 12, we have the Fall Guest Day, the most
popular men’s event. This will shotgun at 12:00 PM and be limited
to the first 60 teams. Please contact the golf shop if you have not
received your entry and we will sign you up. The drawing for teams
will take place on November 5. The cost of the event will be $150/
person and includes lunch, beer on the course, carts and prizes.
Finally, the Turkey Shoot Mixed Foursome will take place
on November 14 with a 12:30 PM shotgun start. Contact the golf
shop to sign up.
With very few activities happening on the course, this is a
great time of year to invite one of the Pros to join your foursome.
We would really enjoy the invitation and love to get to know you
better - maybe even give you a couple of tips while we are out on
the course. With so many new members it is hard for many of us to
remember names. Playing a round of golf with you helps us get to
know each other better.
As the Holiday season quickly approaches, it’s time to think

being able to restrict carts to cart paths like many golf courses do all winter
and spring, roping off sensitive areas is the only way to protect the turf at
Colonial. Please keep in mind, the areas we protect will provide you with a
better lie than you would otherwise find if it were not roped off, especially
next spring, when the weather is great and everybody is itching to play golf
but it is still too cool to actively recover Bermudagrass. We have made a
lot of strides over the last few years in lowering ropes and making corridors
for walkers to make the roping more player friendly, but at some level, the
aggravation of the ropes is a function of the job they are designed to do,
to restrict you from entering a sensitive area.
Leaf pick-up: With the amount of trees we have, leaf pick-up is a
two month task which requires a lot of constant attention. You never
know more clearly how many trees you have until they start dropping
their leaves (seemingly all at once!). This year, we appear to have a bumper
pecan crop, so you may want to be extra careful under pecan trees that you
don’t launch one unintentionally with your golf ball. It will be difficult
at times to find your golf ball amongst all the leaves and tree debris, but
we will be sweeping through the golf course with sweepers and blowers as
quickly as possible. Please be patient with us while we tackle these annual
rituals of fall. Thanks.

November is a month where tasks on the golf course transition from
the growing season to the winter season. Some early winter season work
you will be seeing:
Tree work: Six years ago we started an aggressive tree trimming and
maintenance program that has been scaled back significantly the past few
years. We went through the entire golf course once, removing malformed
“replacement” trees and limbing up the large native trees so they are less
prone to wind/ice damage and we can grow some grass underneath them.
At some point in the future, we are likely to scale back up and do some
more extensive limbing up and trimming, but we will try and do all of it
this fall/winter with our staff. That being the case, some level of contact
between golfers and trimmers is inevitable, so please be aware of their presence and be cognizant of them being aware of you. Please keep in mind if
they stop trimming for every group of golfers that pass by, they will not be
nearly as productive as we need to get through as many trees as possible.
Please be patient with this vital part of tree maintenance.
Roped off areas: One of the most persistent sources of turf damage at Colonial is cart traffic, especially from December thru April when the warm
season Bermudagrass cannot repair itself. Sometime in November, and
continuing into winter and spring, we will restrict carts to areas that can
handle the most traffic. I know how unpopular the ropes are, but without

A moment in History...
AN ALL-TIME GREAT PULLS
THROUGH IN THE END
In 1976, the annual PGA Tour event at Colonial returned to its “Invitational” roots.
For two years prior, the club hosted special full-field events, including the 1975 Tournament Players Championship.
Champion from the 1967 Colonial, Dave Stockton led things off with a superb 67
to take the lead, along with the hot Hubert Green, who had won three events in a row
earlier that year. Right behind them at 68 lurked ’73 champion Tom Weiskopf, the
great Don January, and the ever-popular Lee Trevino. A five-time major champion,
Trevino had been struck by lightning the previous year. The resulting back injury threatened his career.
During the second round, Trevino caught fire and shot a brilliant 64 to take the
lead. Hot on his heels though, was Texan Miller Barber, just one shot behind. Barber had
fought his way back from a double-bogey on the very first hole Thursday. “My ball hit a
cart path and bounced all the way to University Drive,” he explained later.
Trevino’s second round featured birdies on six of the last seven holes, and a course record 29 for the back nine. In fact, for
the two days he was one-over-par on the front side and nine-under-par on the back side. Having flown his approach to 18 just
five inches from the cup for a tap-in birdie, Trevino could clearly smell his first victory since the scary lightning accident.
The Merry Mex actually re-shafted several of his clubs Friday night, then proceeded to shoot a third round 68 and claim a
54-hole tournament record of 10 under par. That spotted him a three-stroke lead over Barber, while no other player was closer
than five strokes. Having never won in his home state of Texas, the chance at a Colonial victory carried extra special significance, and pressure. Trevino had held the 54-hole tournament lead at Colonial once before, in 1970, but failed to close the deal.
“There’s extra pressure on me,” he admitted. “If I win this thing, I may do a 1½ dive into Crampton’s Lake.”
In fact, Trevino struggled Sunday, and actually lost the lead after a double-bogey on the 12th hole, his second of the day.
“At that point, I thought I had lost the tournament,” he admitted later. “I’m not the best player when I’m in the lead. I start
playing conservatively.”
A strong wind took a toll on the entire field, and only eight players broke par that day. Calling Colonial the “toughest golf
course in the world when the wind is blowing,” Trevino kept fighting. After 15 holes, he was tied for the lead, and a birdie on
the par-three at No. 16 gave him a one-stroke victory.
The golf world rejoiced – Trevino was BACK! With his game and confidence returned, Trevino went on to win eight more
times, including the 1980 Tournament Players Championship, the 1984 PGA Championship – and another Colonial.
