The team of Doug Hayes,
Danny Inocencio, Rachel Perez
and Mike Shirley proved once
again why you aren’t out of
it just because you didn’t
bowl great on Saturday. They
started Sunday morning in
20th place, but got matched
up better and gradually rose
in the standings…qualifying
2nd. In the first match of the
Baker-style stairstep finals, the
team of Paul Pender, Marshal
Kulow, Kyoko McDonald and
Jimmy McMartin defeated
Gary Dickinson, Doug Barron,
Ashley Hansen and Mike Donahue 221-187. They lost the next
match 234-208 to Rick Minier,
Joe Lecroy, Kerry Moreland
and C.J. Thomas.
In the semi-final, Hayes
and crew squeaked by 216-211
before facing qualifying leaders

Guerrero win World Cup titles

— Team USA's Chris
Barnes put on a dominant performance in
the final round Sunday
as he claimed the 50th
QubicaAMF Bowling
World Cup men's title.
Entering the finals
as the No. 3 seed,
Barnes swept the
semifinal and the final,
2-0, in the best-of-three
format at Sky Bowling
Center. Clara Guerrero
of Colombia won the
women's title.
In the championship
match, Barnes took
down top seed Tobias
Bording of Germany
in consecutive games,
269-248 and 231-216.
Needing two strikes in
the final frame for the
shut out, Barnes tossed
a perfect first shot and came up
light but carried the 8 pin late
for the second strike.
"Over time, I've grown to
appreciate how many great
international players have won
this event in their careers,"
said Barnes, whose wife Lynda
won the World Cup in 2005. "It
was certainly on my bucket list
to come here and win."
In the semifinal, Barnes
took a narrow 215-204 win in
the first game before dazzling
the crowd with a 300-219 win
to secure the win against
Ukraine's Mykhaylo Kalika.
On the women's side, Guerrero won a hard-fought match
against Malaysia's Li Jane Sing,
Chris Barnes
2-1, to take the title. Guerrero
won the first game, 239-234,
dropped the second game,
257-243, and won the deciding
game, 265-211.
"All my hard work and
sacrifices for so many years
are worth it now," Guerrero
said. "This is a very historic
tournament with a lot of great
winners in the past. I really
wanted to be a part of that
select group."

PWBA accepting applications
for host centers, unveils logo
ARLINGTON — The Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA), which will
re-launch next summer, now
is accepting applications from
bowling centers interested in
serving as a host for a PWBA
tournament.
More than a decade after
holding its last event, the
PWBA Tour will re-launch in
mid-summer of 2015 with a
nine-event tour and a new logo.
The PWBA has a three-year
funding commitment from the
United States Bowling Congress
(USBC) and Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America
(BPAA) to support operations
and provide guaranteed prize
funds for the 2015, 2016 and
2017 seasons.
“We want to ensure bowling
centers throughout the country
have the opportunity to host a
PWBA event,” BPAA Executive
Director Frank DeSocio said.
“We have received many inquiries from centers and it will be
important to identify centers
that will partner with us and
provide a great experience for
PWBA competitors and fans.”
There will be a specific set
of requirements for a center to
serve as a PWBA tournament
host, including a minimum of
24 lanes (32 lanes is preferred),
a scoring system that can
provide real-time online scoring and sufficient internet to
handle a live stream broadcast.

USBC Hall of Fame class
ARLINGTON — The United
States Bowling Congress Hall
of Fame will induct three new
members in 2015 - all in the
Outstanding USBC Performance
category - after their election
by the USBC Hall of Fame Committee this week.
Four-time USBC Open
Championships titlist Gus Yannaras of Waukesha, Wisconsin,
and two-time champion Sam
Lantto of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, will join some of their
teammates in the USBC Hall
of Fame, while the late Fritzie
Rahn of Chicago, an eight-time
winner at the USBC Women's
Championships, was elected
posthumously.
The committee also slated
seven bowlers for the Superior
Performance national ballot to
be voted on by a panel of USBC
Hall of Fame members, board
members and veteran bowling
writers.
On the men's ballot are
Larry Laub, Lincoln, California; David Ozio and Mark Williams, Beaumont, Texas; Randy
Pedersen, Clermont, Florida;
Mike Scroggins, Amarillo,
Texas; and Danny Wiseman,
Baltimore. Liz Johnson of
Cheektowaga, New York, is the
lone competitor on the women's
ballot.
No one was elected in the
Meritorious Service or Veterans
categories this year.
The induction ceremony will
take place April 29 at the 2015
USBC Convention in Omaha,
Nebraska, and will include
those elected for Superior
Performance.
A look at each of the newlyelected USBC Hall of Famers:
Gus Yannaras
The 57-year-old right-hander
has proven himself as a true
team player, and
he'll now join
three of his Open
Championships
teammates - Lennie Boresch Jr.,
Gary Daroszewski and Dale Traber - in the
USBC Hall of Fame.
Yannaras' success at the
Open Championships includes
Regular Team and Team
All-Events titles in 2009, a
Team All-Events win in 2000
and a Regular Doubles crown
in 1989. He has four additional
top 10 finishes on bowling's
biggest stage.
Yannaras and his Linds
Limited teammates also excelled at the Brunswick World
Team Challenge events, and
his resume includes two BWTC
victories and two additional
top-five appearances.
In Wisconsin, Yannaras has
collected eight state championships and seven city titles,
which helped him into the
Greater Milwaukee Bowling
Association (1998) and Wisconsin Bowling Association (2010)
Halls of Fame.
Sam Lantto
Lantto, a 50-year-old righthander, will be the second
member of his
accomplished
USBC Open
Championships
team to enter
the USBC Hall
of Fame. He'll
join Todd Savoy, who was
enshrined in 2005.
In 31 years on the Open
Championships lanes, Lantto
has earned 11 top-10 finishes
and been a familiar name on
the event's 10-, 15-, 20-year and
lifetime average lists, with a
current career mark of more
than 216. He has two titles to
his credit, Team All-Events in
2002 and 2006.
As a three-time member
of Team USA (1993, 1994 and
2003), Lantto collected nearly a
dozen medals in international
competition, including team
gold at the 1993 Pan American
Bowling Confederation Championships and a silver medal
in team at the World Tenpin
Bowling Association World
Championships in 2003.
Lantto's continued suc-
cess earned him spots in the
Minneapolis Bowling (2004)
and Minnesota State Bowling
Association (2005) Halls of
Fame.
Fritzie (Trettin) Rahn
Rahn, who hailed from
Chicago, was a dominant
performer on the lanes during
the 1920s and
1930s.
Her time
at the USBC
Women's
Championships included eight
titles, third behind her teammate Dorothy Miller, also from
Chicago (10) and Emma Jaeger
of Toledo, Ohio (9).
Rahn earned her first Women's Championships crown in
the 1927 team event, captained
her Alberti Jewelers squad to
team titles in 1928, 1931, 1933
and 1935 and led Logan Square
Buicks to an additional victory
in 1940, before temporarily
stepping away from the game.
She also claimed doubles titles
in 1930 and 1934.
As successful locally as
she was on the national stage,
Rahn collected 11 city championships from 1928-1939 to go
along with four state wins in
the 1930s.

Jason Thomas, who recently
joined USBC as Senior Director
of Digital Media after 10 years
with the Professional Bowlers
Association, also will take on
the role of PWBA Director of
Operations. He was intricately
involved in the redevelopment
of the PBA Tour in 2000, after
it was purchased by three
ex-Microsoft executives.
Thomas will take the lead
on site selections and the
overall production process of
the PWBA Tour and individual
events.
“Jason was brought in
to handle our digital media
platforms but his background
makes him the ideal person
to direct the re-launch of the
PWBA Tour,” USBC Executive
Director Chad Murphy said.
“He knows what it takes to
deliver a product that will be
beneficial to the centers, the
competitors and the fans.”

age of 89.

Arlington as well as Secretary
on the Monday Seniors League.
He was a coordinator for the
USBC National tournaments
and always took at least 10 to
as many as 25 teams every
year. He also took teams to
the Southwest tournament in
Wichita as well. He always encouraged every league bowler
to participate in their city and

Thoughts on your big night?
I had 3 spares and two of them
were ten pins, typical Cowtown!
A lot of SASBA bowlers bowl
in the fun competitive doubles
league. The previous week, Sam
had bowled 300 against me, so
it was nice to return the favor
the following week.
What ball did you throw?
Storm Paradigm
Who drills your balls? That
ball was drilled by Larry
Reynolds.
What is your all-time
favorite bowling ball? I love the
Paradigm and Brunswick Zone
What is your all-time high
average? 228
How long have you been
bowling? I can’t tell you, it’s too
embarrassing. My dad was in
the military in Guam and we
used to bowl duck pins a long
time ago.
Who is your favorite pro
bowler? Norm Duke followed
closely by Chris Barnes. I like
Norm’s finesse and how he
slaughters the competition.
Most memorable bowling
moment? Hopefully it hasn’t
happened yet.
What lessons has the game
taught you? Humility and
patience. It has nothing to do
with the bowling ball and the
arm swing, it’s the 4-6 inches
between your ears.

worked hand in hand to
provide fair and consistent lane
conditions at USBC championship events.
The companies recently
agreed to extend their partnership to make Kegel the official
lane maintenance provider for
all USBC tournaments through
December 2016.
Kegel has provided lane
maintenance equipment and
supplies as well as technical
and on-site support for USBC
events since January 2006.
This includes more than a
dozen tournaments each year
from the youth to professional
level.

Junior Gold Championships

Grip and Master will move to
Indianapolis in 2016 and the
2017 tournament will be held
in Cleveland.
Sites for the Junior Gold
Championships previously were
announced but with Cleveland playing host to a major
national convention in the
summer of 2016, concerns were
raised about the availability
and cost of hotel rooms for
Junior Gold competitors. Those
concerns necessitated swapping
the Junior Gold Championships
host city sites for 2016 and
2017.
“We appreciate that the
host cities and centers were
agreeable to the change,” said
USBC Executive Director Chad
Murphy. “Junior Gold continues to grow each year and we
want to make certain we have
appropriate accommodations
available for the competitors
and their families.”
In 2016, the Junior Gold
Championships will take place
July 16-22 in Indianapolis with
Woodland Bowl, Western Bowl,
Expo Bowl, Southern Bowl and
All-Star Bowl serving as host
centers. Indianapolis also will
host the Bowling.com Youth
Open Championships from July
14-31.
For 2017, the Junior Gold
Championships will take place
July 15-21 in the Cleveland
area. Freeway Lanes of Parma,
Game of Mentor, Game of
Wickliffe, Roseland Lanes and
Yorktown Lanes be the host
centers. The Youth Open will
be contested July 13-30.
The Junior Gold Championships features the top
youth bowlers in the nation
competing for national titles in
six divisions – U12 boys, U12

Proceeds from auction will
benefit IBMHOF in its mission
to preserve the history of
bowling.

The American Forces
Network, a non-commercial
television service made available by the U.S. Department
of Defense, will continue to
air PBA telecasts to more than
a half million active duty,
uniformed personnel based in
175 locations around the world,
thanks to the renewal of an
ongoing agreement with the
PBA.
PBA programming will be
provided to AFN at no cost,
PBA Commissioner Tom Clark
announced. The subscriptionfree cable and satellite television service and can be viewed
by U.S. military personnel
located on U.S. bases and
installations outside of the U.S.,
including on ships at sea.
“Without the ongoing
support of the PBA, other sport
leagues and various contributors of televised content in all
genres, our nation’s troops
would not be able to watch
quality programming from
home while serving their nation abroad,” said AFN spokesman Andy Scott.

first time I reviewed this a few
months ago, but it is about the
life and times of the one and
only Ernie Schlegel.
Not only to you get to read
how the PBA and USBC Hall
of Famer learned how to bowl
under pressure for thousands of
dollars, but also a rare look at
the people in and around that
slice of New York life in the
1960s.
They were characters, all of
them in one way or another.
One Finger Benny, Tony Sideweight, Bernie Bananas and
others in bowling late into the
night at such places like Maple
Lanes, Leemark Lanes, and
Manhattan Lanes in Brooklyn,
Philadelphia’s Jimmy Dykes
Lanes, Federal Lanes, and a
handful of others.
The good ones made more
money on a few nights action
then a 9 to 5 day laborer.
Sometimes faced with physical
violence, they at times got
bruises, cuts, broken bones
throwing a loaded ball, or at
times faking a heart attack to
escape a hotly-contested match.
They all happened, some more
than once.
Beyond that is how Schlegel
won two memorable TV finals
matches, his first tour win in
1980, and the 1995 TPC-Randy
Pedersen match, featuring a
surprising twist of irony. And
it’s not what you think, either.

When the USBC and BPAA
announced the return of the
PWBA, many industry observers were pleased, knowing the
top female bowlers would like
another option rather than just
the U.S. Open and the USBC
Queens events.
On the Sunday, October 26
edition of the Castle Lanes/
Spare Time Bowling show
on Milwaukee’s SportsRadio
105.7 FM The Fan, host Steve
‘Sparky’ Fifer had a few questions on several of the details
disclosed in the October conference call and press release on
the proposed nine-event PWBA
tour.
His first point was about
sponsors, asking why any had
not been secured yet. There
were the obvious ones, beer
and soft drink companies, as
well as others geared toward
women.
Fifer’s biggest beef for our
friends at 621 Six Flags Drive,
was with live-streaming versus
using a broadcast outlet for the
finals.
“This whole live-streaming
thing, why? Why are you livestreaming? I have DirectTV.
Do you have any idea of how
many television stations there
are in this country, any idea?!?
I’ve got a ton of them, most
of which I never knew even
existed. You can’t find a channel, not a single channel, that
would broadcast these events. I
don’t believe you tried! I don’t.
I don’t think you tried. I think
you just said hell with it, we’re
just going to stream it, and go
forward.”
Fifer and co-host Dwight
Albrecht then filled in listeners
on something only insiders
had known about until now, a
bowling-based reality show.
“I had one (TV production
company) come at me. (Castle
Lanes owner and show title
sponsor) Phil Ontko had one
come to him. They were actually in his bowling center to do
a reality bowling show.”
Then, Fifer emphatically
capped off his Dennis Milleresque rant with this wrap up.
“As I’ve stated before, and
I’ll tell you again, now listen

something. You can follow
around three of four of the
women (bowlers). The deal is
this, your reality show airs,
then after that our show airs.”

These quotes
were taken out of
the 12:00 to the
27:00 mark of the
podcast. Fifer did
mention at the end
of the segment he
had reached out with interview
requests to talk about the
PWBA Tour for this show, but
was turned down.
On the following week’s
show November 2, award-winning blogger and USBC Hall of
Famer Jeff Richgels mentioned
he had been approached by
a production company about
finding interested individuals
in a bowling-based reality
show.
Even some very high average bowlers I know have been
approached by a production
company about becoming the
subject of a reality show. There
are a couple of twists in that
scenario that the production
company is convinced would
get viewers, but as of this
date, have not found a cable or
satellite television station who
agrees.
Based on what I have heard
from my sources, a probable
premise would more than
likely be closer to what the
HBO shows, NHL’s ‘24/7 To
The Winter Classic’ and NFL’s
‘Hard Knocks’ spotlight. The
NHL program shows the two
teams preparations for the annual January 1st outdoor game,
while ‘Hard Knocks’ profiles a
NFL team in training camp.
The first question that may
come to mind is how attractive
is a show like this? ESPN.com
hockey writer Scott Burnside
wrote in a September 15th
column the following.
“The NHL will announce
later this month that they
have partnered with emerging
premium cable provider Epix
to produce and air the popular
reality hockey series that
precedes the Winter Classic
outdoor game, multiple sources
told ESPN.com.” Ratings have
not been too bad for those so
far.
Think we are a little ways
away from heavyweight Hollywood production companies
wanting to make four-week
shows leading into the World
Series of Bowling, the U.S.
Open, or even the Tournament
of Champions.
But, you never know. As you
remember in last week’s TBN,
Publisher Tony stated ESPN’s
Peabody award-winning 30 for
30 documentary film series
crew was in and around this
year’s World Series of Bowling
getting footage for a future
chapter in the film series.
Critics give The Worldwide
Leader in Sports in Bristol,
Connecticut, a hard time for
taking sports too far into the
entertainment realm. But
bowling, cutting edge for
network television forty to
fifty years ago, would have to
go through what is a Rip Van
Winkle effect. It’s been away so
long from mainstream media,
the landscape has completely
changed into something that
was never even dreamed of
before the nap at the base of
the tree.
So could the reality show
angle be the hook to get the
PWBA to a cable or satellite
outlet?
Production companies think
so, but so far, stations don’t.
