Background of Tamils
Representative Council
In 1959, Thamizhavel G. Sarangapani and a few well known personalities
got together and decided to form a council to unite the Tamils and the
Tamil organizations functioning on a sectarian basis (Hindus, Muslims,
Christians or Buddhists) in Singapore. After a year of hard work, Tamils
Representative Council (Tamilar Pirathinithithuva Sabai) was officially
registered on 1.8.1951.
30 years later, under the leadership of the late Mr. G Kandasamy, the
association was revamped and its Tamil name was changed from Tamilar
Pirathinithithuva Sabai to Tamizhar Peravai and retained the English
name of Tamils Representative Council. TRC now concentrated more on
the upliftment of the educational status of Tamils, and increasing its
membership. TRC also strengthened the financial status and its credibility
to a certain extent.
In 1994 TRC formed the TRC Multi-purpose Co-operative Society to
encourage Indians specifically Tamils on thrift and offer low interest loans
to its members. Another major dream of this society was to have a
building of its own.
In the new millennium, TRC is expected to excel in many areas under the
able, committed, hardworking and results-oriented leadership and the
Management Council. TRC will be transformed into a vibrant, caring and
financially sound organization with a large membership base in the near
future, with the support of all Tamils in Singapore.

Significance of Singapore Flag
The red half of the Singapore Flag symbolizes
the universal brotherhood and equality of man,
while the lower white half signifies pervading
and everlasting purity and virtue. In the upper
left quarter is a white crescent beside a circle of
five white stars. The crescent represents a rising
young nation and the stars embody the nation’s
five ideals: democracy, peace, progress, justice
and equality.

Message
I congratulate the Tamils Representative Council on organising this dinner
to celebrate Singaporeís 35th National Day. This is an especially
commendable accomplishment given that a new leadership team was
elected by the TRC membership only a few weeks ago.
The TRC faces three significant challenges. The first is to ensure that the
TRC, and the wider community that it serves, keep abreast of the far
reaching changes affecting our economy and society. Many have opined
that the 21st century is the era of knowledge and technology. Singapore
has positioned itself at the cutting edge of this revolution. We must ensure
that our community – individuals, organisations and businesses alike - is
equally well-positioned to seize the opportunities presented by this
transformation.
The second challenge is to ensure that our community continues to
integrate effectively with the mainstream of Singapore society. The TRC
is an ethnic-based confederation. Thought it is imperative that we
maintain our cultural and linguistic identity, we must be equally resolute
in our effort to play a meaningful and enduring role within the context of
multi-racial and multi-cultural Singapore. It is a matter of national unity,
social cohesion, and economic necessity.
The third is to work together with the various Indian/Tamil organisations
in the pursuit of common goals. Ours is a small community. We cannot
afford to scatter our limited resources and talent in diverse, if not
divergent, tasks. The key is to focus our energies on issues of fundamental
importance to our community so as to achieve tangible results.
I believe the TRC leadership is more than equal to these challenges.
However, the leadership of any organisation is only as effective as the
support it gets from its members. I therefore urge all members and
affiliated organisations to come forward and give your full support for the
worthwhile efforts of the TRC.
I wish you all a Happy 35th National Day.
Mr S. Iswaran
MP for West Coast GRC

“A Better Home,
A Caring Shelter for All”
Our intentions and goals are clear.
Our mission is basically to upgrade
the everyday quality of life of the
Tamils in Singapore. Tamils, as a
community must feel secure and
confident in themselves - and with
others in our society.
The G. Kandasamy Trust Fund,
started in memory of the late G.
Kandasamy is being re-launched.
We hope more Tamils will come
forward to contribute and
generously support their less
privileged fellow brethren.
The coming years will be more and

Message
It gives me great pleasure as the Chairperson of the Organising Committee, to
convey my first National Day dinner message. This is the first event organised by
the recently elected Tamils Representative Council of which I am proud to be a
part.
The Council will strive to provide initiatives that will benefit the Tamil speaking
community. We hope that not only our children but also every Tamil speaking
adult will benefit from our educational and various cultural activities that we
intend to organise.
Through the work of organising this National Day Dinner, Management Council
members have become closer and we hope through our efforts that this night will
be a memorable one. Further I would like to take this opportunity to thank our
President for his excellent guidance and my fellow Council members who have
worked very hard in making this event a success.
It is my sincere hope that everyone tonight enjoy themselves and will leave with
pleasant memories.
Finally my very good wishes to each and everyone.

The G. Kandasamy E ducation
Tr ust Fund
TRC is relaunching its much-respected G. Kandasamy Education Trust
Fund.
The G. Kandasamy Education Trust Fund was started in memory of a
formidable trade unionist, politician and community leader who passed away
on 20th March 1999. He was also the ex-President and Advisor of TRC.
Though Kandasamy was intensely involved in trade union work, he had taken great
pains to serve the Indian community for over 30 years, particularly in the field of
education.
In 1968 he helped launch the Singapore Indian Education Trust (SIET), to assist
financially needy Indian children in their pursuit of education. Today, hundreds of
students continue to benefit from SIET to complete their tertiary level education.
After the death of the well-known community leader and philanthropist, the late G.
Sarangapany, TRC was rejuvenated by Kandasamy. From 1978 to 1997, for some 20
years, Kandasamy led TRC to serve the needs of the Indian community, especially the
Tamil speaking community.
The main purpose and mission of Kandasamy was to uplift the educational performance
of the Indian children from low-income families. He firmly believed that only through
education could Indian children succeed and attain a higher status in life and society.
He had indeed transformed his thoughts into successful socio/economic action by the
many examples of the work and personal deeds he left behind.
“Work, work hard to serve the needy; to uplift the community” were his constant dreams
and exhortations to all of us. To continue his dreams, to continue with his noble work,
TRC is relaunching the G. Kandasamy Education Trust Fund. Please come forward
and help with your generous donations.
The money will be used to grant scholarships to needy children, as Kandasamy would
want us to do.
