want to thank everyone who attended the Gala. I’m sure you enjoyed the Platters who were terrific. Those that
missed this event missed a wonderful time and a good start to a fun ’08.
The membership program is off to a good start and we have several new petitions. We should have a
full ceremonial on June 14. April is going to be a busy month; we have SDA April 9 through April 13, WSA April
17 through April 20, Stated Meeting April 21 and of course our annual Circus April 25 to April 27. WSA is in
San Diego this year and if you want to join us please contact David Wehmeyer. I have arranged for an expert on
Terrorism to speak at the Stated Meeting. Please bring your lady and friends for a great dinner and interesting
program. As usual we need all the help we can get for the circus. Please donate some time and come down to
help, ladies are also invited to help.
May is equally exciting. We have the Jr Philharmonic Orchestra performing at the Temple on
May 4 at 3:30 pm. This is a free concert but you will need to contact the Temple for tickets. You may have
as many tickets as you want. We have a trip to Branson, MO, May 10 through 15. There is still time to
sign up and enjoy this great city. We will have a thank you Bar-B-Que for Circus workers on May 18.
Details have not been finalized yet. The Santa Maria Parade is May 31. This is always a fun day.
Future Events: Ceremonial June 14 at the Hospital, the Imperial Session in St. Louis, MO June 29 to July 3. Stated
Meeting and Pancake Breakfast July 12. We will have another interesting program, so don’t miss out. This will take care of the first
six months of the year.
Nobles we are off to a good start. Membership is the key and we need to involve new and inactive Nobles in our activities.
We need you at the ceremonials to send the right message to the new Nobles. Make them feel welcome and invite them to join you
for some of your fun activities. I encourage the Units and Clubs to write articles for the Al Malaikan so other Nobles can see what
you are doing. Other Nobles may even join you in your activities. We need your help to grow.

6th Annual Spring Fling Ceremonial Weekend
aughlin, Nevada was the place to be for Al Malaikah Shrine’s 6th Annual Spring Fling Ceremonial. The Al
Malaikah throng assembled at Don Laughlin’s Riverside Hotel for the fun filled weekend. The weekend really
kicked off as a several Al Malaikahans road the “fun bus” from the Shrine Auditorium to Laughlin.
Thursday evening it was time to have a ball at the “Midnight Bowling Tournament”. There were some pretty
good bowlers and well, some who were “interesting” but, all really had fun and the fellowship was terrific. Our
Potentate is quite consistent and finished off the evening with four strikes in a row! That’s a Turkey? ...... not our
Potentate but three strikes in a row.
Friday morning the Nobility who arrived on Thursday enjoyed a buffet breakfast. The day moved
along to the Ladies River Cruise at 12:30pm.
Friday evening all were treated to the Swing Sisters show in the Starlite Room. These three ladies
were in top form as they took the audience on a trip down memory lane. You felt like you were at a
USO performance. There were several costume changes and lots of upbeat numbers. The trio had a few
members of the audience up and dancing to some old favorites. The highlight of the evening was when
the gals had our Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy who also comes from “down Chicago way”, Illustrious Sir
Hal Justice on stage and teased and serenaded him. By the size of the grin on his face and the blush and
lipstick on his cheek it was obvious he had a wonderful time. I think that everyone there did! This Friday
night show has proven to be a
real treat year after year.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NEW NOBLES
AND THEIR TOP LINE SIGNERS FROM THE
LAUGHLIN CEREMONIAL!
Saturday morning the Al Malaikah Ritual Team performed the
open first section of our ceremonial. Thirty-one Novices were made
Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Our Al Malaikah Band was awesome!
After all the guests and Ladies were excused the award winning
Al Malaikah Stagecraft put the Candidates through the “Muslim Test” in
a fun filled high spirited second section.
The Fezzing ceremony took place at the Star View room just
before the guests assembled for a nice buffet dinner.
After dinner it was time to head over to Don Laughlin’s Show
Room. We were treated to a terrific fun filled lively show by “Riders in
the Sky”. These yodelling cowboys put on a real fast passed evening of
familiar tunes and fun corny well groomed jokes. I know that it was one
of the best shows I have seen in years. This Grammy winning quartet is
very polished and they really know how to play to, and with
the audience. They even introduced an alter-ego or two to
expand the act.

There was lots to do all weekend but still there was time to relax and visit in
the Al Malaikah hospitality room as well. Thanks to all who helped out in putting
the Spring Fling weekend together.
Chief Rabban Ron Bianchi and Past Potentate Glen Christensen put in many
hours setting up the weekend and attending to details. If you didn’t make the trip to
Laughlin you really missed a fun time.

Cleft Lip and Palate Patients at Shriners Hospitals for Children Los Angeles
and the Need for Orthognathic Surgery and Orthodontic Devices (Braces)
C
left lip and palate are birth defects that happen while a baby is developing during the 6th to 10th week of pregnancy. The bones and
tissues of a baby’s upper jaw, nose, and mouth normally come together (fuse) to form the roof of the mouth and the upper lip. If the
tissue in the developing mouth do not fuse together, a baby is born with a condition called cleft lip and/ or cleft palate. As a guideline,
clefts occur in approximately 1 per 1,000 births, with bilateral clefts occurring in 1 in 5,000 births.
Typical of cleft patients is the severely pushed back midface as shown in these photographs (even though this particular boy doesn’t have
a cleft); the second image shows his result from orthodontic treatment followed by orthognathic surgery. Shriners Hospitals surgeons can
routinely get the lip and palate closed for children without the use of orthodontic appliances. But it is the severe skeletal deformity that many
of our patients develop following the early surgeries, like this boy, that cannot be corrected without orthognathic
surgery, preceded by orthodontic treatment.
One of the first problems a child with cleft palate can have is difficulty breathing or eating. Kids born with
cleft palate usually have frequent ear infections. That’s because air and fluid can’t pass normally through the
eustachian tubes - the tubes that connect the throat with the middle ear. Dental problems, such as malpositioned,
missing or malformed teeth, also are common in people born with cleft lip and palate. If the teeth don’t line
up properly, a person may not be able to pronounce certain sounds. Speaking clearly is challenging for kids
with cleft palate. The soft palate doesn’t move well enough to prevent air from leaking out through the nose
during speech. This can cause their voices to sound as if they are speaking through their nose. When a child can’t be understood, he is often
perceived as “slow’ and not afforded the same educational opportunities as others born without cleft deformities!
Plastic reconstructive surgeons at Shriners Hospitals for Children use orthognathic surgery to correct the issues related to cleft lip and
palate. Orthognathic surgery is corrective facial surgery where deformities of the face and jaw exist. In most cases of orthognathic surgery,
an orthodontist is needed to plan and prepare a patient for surgical repositioning of segments of facial bones or teeth. Prior to surgery, the
orthodontist will place orthodontic appliances (braces) on the patient’s teeth as shown on the left. If it is necessary to remove any teeth to
help with this alignment, it will be done at this time.
Physicians at Shriners Hospital work as part of the Cleft Lip and Palate Team to develop an individualized
treatment plan for each patient. People with a cleft lip and palate will need several surgeries to repair the
complex deformity. These include cleft lip repair, cleft palate repair, and a bone graft to the upper jaw to close
the bone gap in the gum area. As the child’s face grows further surgery may be needed to adjust the jaw, the
palate or the back of the throat to improve chewing and/ or speech.
Reconstructive surgery, orthodontic treatment, and speech therapy can minimize the effects of a child born
with a cleft lip / palate. Breathing, eating, and speech are also greatly improved, so a child born with a cleft lip
and/or palate may lead a life unaffected by this birth defect. If you know of a child who can benefit from the

There will be greeters to help you if you are not familiar
with the meeting location and to introduce you to the Unit and
Club men from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. Dinner will be served until 6:45
p.m. The program includes the presentation of the LAPD Officer
of the Quarter Award and a guest speaker, who will discuss
terrorism and its local implications. There will be a door prize
drawing, then ladies and non-Shriner guests will be entertained
during the brief and efficient stated meeting.
The menu for this meeting will be tri-tip or chicken,
salad, potato, and dessert. For this special dinner, there will be
a mere $5.00 charge. Reservations area a must so we know how
much food to purchase. Please let us know how many will come
with you to the meeting and their choice of chicken or beef.
The dinner and meeting will be held in the Exposition Hall.

Shriners Hospitals for Children – Los Angeles
Receives Donation of Patient Transportation Vans
he Los Angeles Shriners Hospitals for Children was thrilled to receive two transportation vans February, 26th from the Al
Malaikah Shriners of Los Angeles. “The Chevrolet vans came at the perfect time as the need for the transportation of
patients and families has grown as the number of patients treated at the hospital has been growing steadily.” said Stuart
Wright, Chairman of the Board of Governors
at the hospital. “These additional vans will
provide a safe method of transportation to our
patients who otherwise would have no access
to the care that Shriners Children’s Hospital
provides.”

Hal Justice who presented the donation to
the hospital. The vans each can carry up to
ten passengers and provide the hospital with
a greater ability to transport patients to local
airports, train station, bus station, and subway
station. The gift that the Al Malaikah Shriners
have provided will make the journey for many
families a great deal easier. Gilbert Aronoff
and Clyde Gibble were on hand to represent
the volunteer drivers from Los Angeles who
will be using these new vehicles to provide
free transportation for the hospital yearround.

“In Memoriam” Website Is Increasing

ince their introduction just a few months ago, the “Get Well” and “In Memorium”
sections on the Al Malaikah Website is enjoying success on a daily basis. We have
reported on over 40 Nobles and Ladies who are under the weather and would like to
receive calls, cards, etc. And, 38 who have passed away and we’ve given funeral, memorial
information, etc. on these. And, most important, this has been done on a timely basis.
It is so gratifying to call or send a card to someone who isn’t feeling well, or, be

First Lady’s Legacy Lives On
Through Scholarship Program
I
n July 2007, First Lady Helen
Lemieux announced her
fundraising program, “Research
– Straight to the Heart,” which will
provide scholarships for a summer
internship program for medical and
allied health care students.
After years of battling cancer,
Mrs. Lemieux passed away Jan. 1. Her
legacy lives on through the various
events and projects at Zenobia Shriners
and Shriners of North America that she
was involved with, as well as her many
contributions – such as her First Lady’s
program – to Shriners Hospitals for
Children.
Mrs. Lemieux believed that
research, with its potential to improve
medical treatments, will become an
increasingly important component of
Shriners Hospitals’ mission. She also
recognized the critical need to attract
excellent medical professionals to
Shriners Hospitals.
The fundraising program
will assist in these areas by giving
participants the opportunity to work
in Shriners Hospitals for Children’s
research facilities. The
scholarship program will
increase medical students’
awareness of the exciting, important
work being done at Shriners Hospitals
and, ideally, entice them to become
part of our team.
Initially, the internship will
be offered to medical students. The
interns will be supervised by senior
staff at a Shriners Hospital and be
part of a structured training program
emphasizing research being done in
our facilities. Based on experience
gained over time, the program may be
expanded to include students in allied
health care fields who will participate
in rehabilitation research at our
hospitals.
A Continued Presence
Mrs. Lemieux wanted the program to
operate similarly to an endowment
fund, with continued presence and
growth, eventually supporting a
significant number of interns. This
long-term approach will allow even
more future medical professionals to
become part of Shriners Hospitals’
efforts on behalf of children.

continues to make visits throughout
his Imperial Year, he asks that in lieu
of personal gifts, nobles and ladies

people’s symphony will return to our stage for a star-studded afternoon of music. Illustrious Harold
Justice, Potentate, and the Al Malaikah Shrine are hosting the Concert Spectacular so that all guests

Master of Ceremonies for the evening will be Wink Martindale. Highlighting the event is an
array of stage, screen and television stars featured conducting the orchestra in the hilarious Annual

HAROLD L. JUSTICE THE 110TH ILLUSTRIOUS POTENTATE OF AL MALAIKAH SHRINE
I
llustrious Harold Justice was raised in Chicago Illinois, as
a young man he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, which
brought him to California. Upon successful completion of
his Marine Corps service, he entered the Los Angeles Police
Department, where his leadership skills were recognized.
Through a meritorious career, of twenty years, he rose to the
rank of Division Commander. Upon retirement from LAPD,
our Potentate pursued an exciting new career in Corporate
Security serving as Chief of Police of Upton N.Y (the
Brookhaven Federal Labs) and most recently he retired as the
Director of Corporate Security for Farmers Insurance.
He earned a Masters Degree in Public Administration
from Pepperdine University. Hal is married to his lovely wife
Irene; between them they share four grown children and six
grandchildren. Harold’s son Joel is a member of Al Malaikah
Shrine.
Hal became a Master Mason in 1974 in Progressive
Lodge 572 (now Alhambra 322) where he served as Master in
1981. He was proposed for Shrine membership, in 1989, by a
fellow LAPD Commander and Past Potentate, the late Willard
Vausbinder. His Masonic affiliations consist of the Pasadena
Scottish Rite; the Al Malaikah Koppers where he is still an
active member serving as Captain in 2002. He a member
and/or a past President of the Peace Officers, Kern
County, Pasadena and Past Masters Shrine Clubs.
In 1994 he became a member of the Royal Order of Jesters,
LA Court 84.
Stu Wright PP, recognizing Hal’s organizational
skills selected him to serve as General Football Chairman, in
2000. He was appointed to the Progressive Divan in 2002 by
Illustrious Sir Merl Seastrom; Ken Judd PP selected him as
his General Circus Chairman, where under Hal’s competent
leadership the circus generated outstanding profits for the
Temple budget. In 2004 Hal continued to provide leadership
to Al Malaikah serving as chairman for various Temple
functions. He was chairman of the Chief Rabban’s fundraiser
which proved to be a very successful event for fun and profit.
2005 found him chairing our first annual Smoke Out and he
continues to make that event more successful each year. Hal,
an outstanding ritualist, participates with the Shrine Degree
team traveling to various Masonic Lodges to put on third
degrees on behalf of Al Malaikah Shriners.
Hal’s professional affiliations include the American
Society for Industrial Security, the Insurance Security
Association, the International Security Managers Association,
The Southern California Fraud Investigators Association,
the Chief Special Agents Association and the FBI National
Academy Associates.
For fun and entertainment Hal enjoys the Shrine,
travel, and family.

Meet Your New 2nd Ceremonial Master
red Bernhardt was born in Waterbury Connecticut, and
moved to California at an early age. Graduated from
La Puente High School. Fred and his lady Paula have
been married for over 47 years and have lived in Glendora,
California for most of the time. They have four Daughters all
of whom were members of Job’s Daughters, as was Paula,
and 4 Grand Daughters, 4 Grandsons and 2 Great grandsons.
Fred is a retired non-degreed Design Engineer with 40 years
plus hands on experience in the electronics industry.
Fred’s inspiration and desire to join the Masonic
fraternity resulted from his first two Daughters joining Job’s
Daughters under the relationship of Paula’s Grandfather, and
when the next two Daughter’s wanted to
join, Fred wanted them to join under his
Masonic relationship.
Fred’s Masonic career began
in 1976 when he was raised a master
mason in Glendora Lodge 404,
Glendora, CA. and has served the
lodge as Marshal, Jr. and Sr. Deacon, Jr.
and Sr. Warden and then Worshipful
Master in 1980, Chaplain
two years, Officers Coach
for two years and is
currently serving
as Secretary. He
received the
Hiram award in 2003. Fred also served as Associate Bethel
Guardian for Bethel 251 in Glendora for two years. He
joined Pasadena Scottish Rite, Al Malaikah Shrine and Citrus
Shrine Club in 1988 and served Citrus Shrine Club as Klown
Director twice and Club President in 1993. He has served
Al Malaikah as Regional Shrine Club Director, Assistant
Director of Shrine Clubs, Regional Membership Director,
President of the Clown Unit, Temple Clown Director, Circus
Committee, Football Committee, Outer Guard, Director of
Shrine Clubs, and Temple Marshal. Fred joined the Pyramid
Patrol in 2000 and is currently a member of the Oasis Patrol
where he served as Commandant of Units and Captain of
the Patrol in 2003 and 2005, and President in 2007. Fred
was appointed to the Divan as 2nd
Ceremonial
Master in 2008 by Illustrious Sir Hal
Justice.
Fred is also
a member of the
Shrine degree
team, which
is well known
for conferring
third degrees
and promoting
Masonry through
out Southern
California.

he annual Al Malaikah Shrine Circus and Carnival arrives at the Shrine
Auditorium in Los Angeles for it’s 83rd Anniversary Friday April 25 thru 27,
2008.
The Shrine Circus is a local institution with seven performance over three
days, and features the traveling Circus Gatti, live and on stage at the Shrine
Auditorium 665 W. Jefferson Blvd. Los Angeles. The Circus Gatti has
been thrilling audiences for over 40 years. It combines an
entourage of elephants, horses and exotic felines, as well
as
trapeze artists and other daredevil acts.
Enter the Midway on 32nd St. and
Royal St. One hour before the show
starts and the fun begins with rides,
face painting, carnival games, a giant
slide, a merry-go-round, food and many
more exciting activities. Then on to the
Circus in the comfort of the giant Shrine
Auditorium.

Ron’s Ramblings
A
l Malaikah has proudly sponsored
a Circus for the past 82 years.
This April will be our 83rd. I
have supported and worked the circus
ever since I joined Al Malaikah, this
year will be no different. This is one of
the fun things we do as a Shriners.
When you see the kids with that
big smile on their faces it makes you feel
so good that we have sustained the event
for 83 years. I would like to know how
many other events have lasted so long
in the Los Angeles area, let alone any
that have put so many smiles on so many
thousands of kids faces over the years.
The big part of our success lies in
the effort that is put forth
with all of the Nobles
that work for several
days and countless
hours. I talk to
men and women
that have attended
our Circus in
years past and
are now bringing
their children and
grandchildren to
enjoy this wonderful family event.
So when your feet get tired and
you start getting grouchy think of the joy
you are bringing the kids both now and in
future memories.
Our Mommies and Daddies
program is another way the Nobility and
their ladies contribute to the Circus. To
those that contribue I say a big thank
you.
Let’s rest up and get ready for
April 25, 26 and 27.
