Country Music, Baybee!!!
Stating the obvious to be sure, but there is no shortage
of distraction in Las Vegas. The last Southwest flight out
of Nashville Sunday night was a boisterous who’s who
of artists and industry types bound for a perpetual party.
And despite the flashing lights, crowded gaming tables
and overflowing MGM Grand watering holes that greeted
them, the country crowd is never more than one song, one
voice away from being reminded why we’re all here.
Such was the case Monday morning as Warner. Bros.’
Joanna Cotten stood before some of Country radio’s
highest profile decision makers and introduced herself.
Opening the Albright & O’Malley radio seminar with
video of a bluesy live club performance, the Memphisnative then took the stage with piano accompaniment and
unfurled a soulful, expansive and dynamic voice while
singing her ballad “Keep The Faith.” The goose bumps and
the standing ovation lasted well past the song’s conclusion,
and the title offered a mantra for the week.
Whatever the concerns of this business and no matter
how many “country friendly” celebrities cross the ACM
stage tomorrow night (5/15), the fortunes of this show,
this format and this industry ultimately rest on the music.
Thank goodness.
No Spoilers Here
The music carries on tonight at the New Artists Party
for a Cause, while the main event kicks off at 8pm ET
All In: Approximately 30 people participated in the first annual

tomorrow (5/15) on CBS: The 42nd Annual Academy of
Country Music Awards. Faith Hill has already announced
she’ll be debuting new music, “Lost,” the first single from
her upcoming hits collection. And there are other special
musical moments planned that, for reasons that will soon
become apparent, we can’t divulge in advance. But trust
us, it’s better this way.
WWI Remote Control
About 30 stations took part in Day One of Westwood

when the doors opened at 10am, one of the first artists
to make the rounds was Arista/Nashville’s Carrie

Gretchen Wilson, Montgomery Gentry, Rodney Atkins,
Little Texas, Craig Morgan, Lonestar, Trent Tomlinson,
Jamie O’Neal, Taylor Swift, Josh Turner, Jake Owen,

A&O Good To Go
The Albright & O’Malley gathering imparted volumes
of useful information for radio and just about anyone
else in the media business. Three distinct segments
covered the evolving nature of media, the central tenets of
storytelling, and finally a look at a broad country listener
perceptual study. Jaye Albright pointed to MySpace,
YouTube and the blogosphere as indicative of how people
are “trading, sharing and collaborating in telling stories,”
pointing in parallel to the rise of “listener built” stations.
Mike O’Malley described the S.O.R.T.A. benchmark for
storytelling: Stand Out, be Remembered, be Talked About.
And the No. 1 “takeaway” from the 7,000-participant
study was that the vast majority (65%+) of Country radio
listeners are “very satisfied” with their Country stations.
The study should be up on the A&O website later in the
week: www.albrightandomalley.com.

John Anderson Easy Money (Warner
Bros./Raybaw)
Anderson’s latest offering, produced
by John Rich, hits the stores chock
full of superstar support—Willie
Nelson and Merle Haggard join him
on “Willie’s Guitar” and Keith Urban
throws in his signature guitar solos.
Anderson co-wrote six cuts, but fellow artists Rich,
James Otto, Shannon Lawson, Julie Roberts and Marcel
Chagnon also nab writing credits.
Little Texas The Very Best Of Little
Texas Live And Loud (Montage)
The band makes the most of their
Montage debut with a live greatest
hits album featuring their best known
songs—“Amy’s Back In Austin,” “Kick A
Little,” “What Might Have Been”—but
they also reintroduce themselves with
the new song, “Hello Again.” They close out the album
with a rousing cover of the Beatles’ “Get Back” going
straight into signature song, “God Blessed Texas.”
Gretchen Wilson One Of The Boys
(Columbia)
Wilson describes her third album,
the follow-up to All Jacked Up as her
diary set to music, which it might
be considering Wilson co-wrote nine
of 11 tracks. It’s filled with raging
honky-tonk tunes – “You Don’t Have
To Go Home,” “There’s A Place In The Whiskey,” as
well as songs that show off her sensitive side like “To
Tell You The Truth” and “Come To Bed,” her duet with
John Rich.
