A Look Inside The Newest Wolf Den
KWLI (Willie)/Denver has gone up in smoke
after 10 months of “Wide Open Country.” The CBS
Radio outlet is now “92.5, The Wolf -- Denver’s New
Country Choice.” Although not used as a liner or in a
promo, a station press release promises “the best new
country music artists of today and the brightest new
stars of tomorrow.”
The music is decidedly current and promoted
with liners including “A new breed of Country
has arrived,” “More new Country” and “Fewer
commercials and more new Country.” During a 90minute Aircheck session in Monday afternoon drive,
four of 22 songs were pre-2000: Tim McGraw’s
“Indian Outlaw” (1994), Collin Raye’s “I Can Still
Feel You” (1998), Faith Hill’s “Wild One” and Alan
Jackson’s “Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow.”
No sign of songs that had been in Willie’s library,
like Stevie Nicks & Don Henley “Leather and Lace,”
John Cougar Mellencamp “Jack & Diane,” Neil
Young “Heart Of Gold” or Doobie Brothers “Black
Water.”
The Wolf aggressively promotes “40-in-a-row
Wolf-a-thons” -- which are 40-minute music sweeps,
not 40 songs in a row. It plays 40 minutes of music,
takes a break, plays two more songs -- leading with a
mid-90s cut -- takes a break, and then launches into
another 40 minutes of music.

Chart Chat
Royce Risser and his MCA promo team are
smokin’ -- they’ve held the No. 1 slot for three weeks
now. George Strait’s “Give It Away” held the top
spot for two weeks while Josh Turner’s “Would
You Go With Me” hit the pinnacle this week. This
is Turner’s second consecutive No.1 and a sure sign
that Josh has “turned the corner” on Country stardom.
And, the MCA folks also nabbed the top spot on
this week’s Aircheck Adds list with “It Just Comes
Natural,” the title track of George Strait’s new CD
that is due in stores 10/3.
Keith Joins Country Aircheck
We’re proud to welcome Kelley Keith to the Country
Aircheck staff as Coordinator/Design & Administration.
Keith brings a degree in graphic design, and has also
served as an intern at Warner Bros./Nashville. She can be
