Scott R. Gernander
Head Coach
Fourth Season
Sam Houston State University (2006; M.A. 2008)
Overall: 75-20
In 2012-2013, Gernander guided San
Jacinto College to a 24-6 record and the
semifinals of the Region XIV tournament.
Under his tutelege, Mohammad Lee was
named a National Junior College Athletic
Association (NJCAA) all-American and
all-Region player, while Danny Lawhorn
and Zach Lofton were also named to the
all-Region squad. The 2012-2013 San Jac
team averaged nearly 91 points per game,
and won the Region XIV South Zone,
finishing with a 14-5 conference record.
As a graduate assistant at Sam Houston
State from 2005-2008, Gernander coached
on teams that recorded a combined
66-27 record, and had three 20-win
seasons in the Southland Conference.
After spending a season as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater, Sam Houston
State University, Scott R. Gernander returned to San Jacinto College in 2008 to the
school where his collegiate playing days began to serve as an assistant coach under
his legendary father. After serving the 2012-2013 season as Interim Head Coach,
the younger Gernander was promoted to the top spot in the Summer of 2013.
The saying, “third time’s a charm” proved to be true for Gernander, as he guided his 20142015 team back to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national
tournament in just his third season as head coach. The return trip was the first for San
Jacinto College since 2006, and the 20th overall appearance in the national tournament.
San Jac opened the 2014-2105 season winning six straight before hitting a snag in a trip
to Florida. It then won 11 out of the next 12 games before falling to Tyler in the Region
XIV tournament. However, the NJCAA selection committee recognized the team’s success,
and awarded them one of four at-large bids to the national tournament. Four players
averaged double-digit points for the year, and five grabbed postseason honors. Willie
Mangum was an all-region first-teamer, and Donte Thomas a second-teamer. All-South Zone
honorable mention selections included Jevonlean Jedgeman, Naiel Smith, and Michael
Hunter. Gernander was the Region XIV Coach of the Year with a 28-6 overall record.
In his second season at the helm of the San Jac program, Gernander’s team went 23-8 overall
record, and was the number three seed in the regional tournament. Anthony Livingston,
Carrington Ward, and Richard Benedyth all earned postseason honors. Livingston was
named to the Region XIV South Zone all-conference team and was an all-region selection,
while Ward and Benedyth were named to the all-conference South Zone second team, with
Ward taking home all-region honorable mention honors. The 2013-2014 squad averaged
87.3 points and 44.6 rebounds per game, finishing with a 14-5 conference mark.
The 31-year-old Gernander played as a guard
at Sam Houston State University from 2003
to 2005, where the Bearkats were 31-27
during his time on the hard court. Prior to
playing at Sam Houston, Gernander was a
member of the San Jacinto College men’s
basketball team, where he played on teams
that went a combined 57-12, won two
conference titles, and were national junior
college runners-up. He averaged 8.1 points
per game while at San Jacinto College.
Before playing at San Jac for his
father, Gernander was a first team alldistrict and second team all-region
guard for Coach Boyce Paxton at Sam
Rayburn High School in Pasadena. He
averaged 17.8 points as a senior.
Gernander received his bachelor’s degree in
kinesiology from Sam Houston State in 2006
and a Master of Arts in Kinesiology in 2008.
He married Amanda Crabtree in June of 2008.

Players find success after San Jacinto College
The names Sam Cassell and Steve Francis are often synonymous with San Jacinto College men’s basketball. However, the extent
of successful players reaches well beyond. The list of former San Jac players includes, but is certainly not limited to, Ollie Taylor,
a first-team All-American in 1968 before transferring to University of Houston; Tom Henderson, a two-time All-American who
was the leading scorer of the U.S. Olympic basketball squad that lost a controversial game to Russia in the 1972 Munich Games
(he was also an All-American at the University of Hawai‘i); Ray Williams a first-team All-American that went on to play for the
University of Minnesota (he was also #10 pick in 1977 NBA draft and played 10 years in the NBA); Ladell Eackles, a first-team AllAmerican that was the 1986 national tournament most valuable player (he went on to play at the University of New Orleans);
Boo Harvey, a first-team All-American that led San Jac to a national title; and Omar Sneed, an NJCAA player of the year and firstteam All-American. Some other notable players include:
Steve Francis (1996-97)
Nicknamed “Stevie Franchise,”
Francis played five seasons in
Houston during the early part
of his career, and later again
signed with the Houston
Rockets as a free agent. He
also spent time with the
Orlando Magic, New York
Knicks and Memphis Grizzlies
during his 10+ years in the
NBA. As a member of the San
Jac men’s basketball team
from 1996 to 1997, Francis helped SJC reach the national
title game, averaging 12.5 and 7.5 rebounds per game. He
guided a talented San Jac team to 36 straight wins before
a loss in the National Junior College Athletic Association
(NJCAA) national tournament. Francis went on to play for the
University of Maryland.
Walter Berry (1983-84)
Berry left his mark on the San
Jac men’s basketball program
when he guided San Jac to
a 35-2 overall record and
a national championship
during the 1983-84 season.
He was a first-team AllAmerican during that
championship season and
was named the most valuable
player at the NJCAA national
tournament. That season
he set a school record for blocked shots in a game with 13
against Western Texas, and is second on the all-time scoring
list behind Ollie Taylor. Berry went on to play for St. John’s
University where he was the college player of the year,
earning the John Wooden Award. He was a first round draft
pick of the Portland Trailblazers.
12
Sam Cassell (1989-91)
Cassell enjoyed a fine career
in the National Basketball
Association, and most
recently, in 2008, he added
another NBA championship
to his résumé in what would
prove to be his final season
as a NBA player. Cassell was
with San Jac for two seasons
(1990-1992) and averaged
23.4 points, 7.6 assists and
5.1 rebounds a contest during
an All-American sophomore season. After playing the 199293 season with Florida State, Cassell was a first-round pick
of the Houston Rockets in 1993, where he helped the team
win back-to-back NBA world championships (1993-1994 and
1994-1995). In 17 seasons in the NBA, Cassell scored 15,635
points; grabbed 3,221 rebounds; and dished out 5,939 assists.
Ollie Mack (1975-77)
Mack led San Jacinto College
to the national tournament
in 1976 and 1977, where it
advanced to the quarterfinals
and finished as the national
runner up, respectively. He
was a two-time NJCAA alltournament team honoree,
and was the 1976 NJCAA
national tournament most
valuable player (scored a
combined 110 points in the
tournament that year). Mack
was a first-team All-American in 1977 before playing for East
Carolina University. He played professionally for the Dallas
Mavericks, Chicago Bulls, and Los Angeles Lakers.

San Jac has won national titles in men’s basketball, volleyball, baseball, and, track and field, as well as individual titles in tennis. Along the way, San Jacinto
College has produced numerous All-Americans and Academic All-Americans, solidifying the success of San Jac student-athletes on the court and field and in

San Jacinto College continues to lead in the Gulf Coast through grant-funded partnerships and collaboration with other colleges
and organizations. These funds support student success through academic programs and initiatives promoting college retention
and completion, regional workforce training, scholarships and tuition in various student programs, and create pathways to higher
education and the workforce for middle and high school students.
Whatever path you take, you’ll find a friendly, big-hearted community at San Jacinto College.
