Police re-arrest Meyer
murder suspect
By: Given Sebashe
A Mozambican national, Eddy Chauke, who
was allegedly involved in the murder of Dr Paul
Meyer from Gravelotte, was re-arrested in the
Free State province after he escaped from
Gravelotte police custody in September 2009.
Two other suspects, Nasser Narly and Rogero
Chambane, are still on the run.
According to the Gravelotte police spokesperson, Warrant Officer David Ramoshaba,
Chauke was arrested by the Free State police on
December 24 after he allegedly committed a
crime in that area.
Ramoshaba said the manhunt and the circulation of information about Chauke's
whereabouts helped them put him behind bars
again.
Ramoshaba said that the Free State police
alerted the Limpopo Organised Crime Unit
investigating officers who then brought Chauke
to the Gravelotte police.
Chauke now faces charges of murder, house
robbery, theft and unlawful escape from police
custody.
He briefly appeared in the Phalaborwa Magistrate's Court on December 28 on the escape
charge, but the case was postponed.
He appeared in the Gravelotte Periodical
Court last Wednesday. His case was postponed
to January 19 for his formal bail application.
It is alleged that in February 2009, five men
accosted Meyer and his family at their home
and then drove them to a bush where they
robbed them of their cellphones and two
Toyota Hilux bakkies.
The suspects then allegedly shot and killed
Meyer.
The police managed to arrest four of the
suspects who were all denied bail in the
Phalaborwa Magistrate's Court because they
were considered a flight risk as they all originate from Mozambique. The suspects are
Eddy Chauke, Nasser Narly, Rogero Chambale
and Alex Mabunda.
It is unknown how the three escapees managed to cut the burglar window of their cell.
Mabunda did not manage to escape as he
was locked in a different cell as his coaccused.
Mabunda appeared in court several times
until his case was provisionally withdrawn in
June last year, pending the arrest of the other
suspects.
Suspects kill pregnant rhino
Police in Limpopo are looking for suspects
responsible for the killing of a pregnant rhino
on a game farm in the Hoedspruit area.
According to the police, the carcass of the
rhino was allegedly discovered on the farm on
Saturday when a farm manager was patrolling
the farm.
It would seem as if the rhino had been killed
a few days before. Both the horns were
removed. A post mortem revealed that the
animal was shot with a high caliber hunting
rifle.
No suspects have been arrested yet and
investigations continue.
optrede.

Die gebrek aan sekuriteit laat die vraag
ontstaan oor veiligheid van pasiënte by die
Maphutu Malatji Hospitaal in Namakgale.
is.
"Die vreemde man het die volgende oomblik
baie vatterig aan my begin raak, en het probeer
om my nek te soen. Dit is toe ek vir hom vra om
my asseblief uit te los," vertel Buitendag. " Im
not mad, but I will kill you!" het hy glo haar
toegesnou.
Phalaborwa, is die man gevang toe hy probeer
spuit. "Die gang was vol kinders, bejaardes,
swanger vrouens en siek pasiënte, maar hulle
het nie opgehou nie. Almal was naderhand so
Talle inwoners wonder of die nuwe hospitaal
gebruik?

And they are doing exactly that. Their employees are

that he must admit that they are growing at a very
alarming pace and reasonable care needs to be
exercised in order to manage growth.
"We are employing the services of highly qualified

For the past three years they have been offering
bursaries to students who want to work towards civil
engineering diplomas, quantity surveying diplomas
and land surveying diplomas, but this far they have not
received convincing requests from students.
Only three students can be taken per year and the
criteria for acceptance is very simple.
Priority is given to those who are from families where
both parents are unemployed, those whose parents
earn less than R5 000 per month, or orphans.
Secondly the student should matriculate with flying
colours. The bursary covers all costs except pocket
money and the student must pass convincingly at the
end of each semester.
This year one bursary was granted to Thapelo
Ralepelle to study a BSc course in civil engineering.
Students are encouraged to visit their offices and
contact the HR department for further information.

The top management of Mac P unanimously agreed
while crafting SWOT analyses that a competitor’s
growth is not a threat at all but an opportunity.

A bridge at Makhushane village which is on the verge of collapse due to heavy rainfall.
Rain causes destruction
By: Maria Maleto
Heavy rainfall resulted in destructive and
costly effects after downpours during the festive season, leaving some Ba-Phalaborwa
community members in disarray.
As a result of the heavy rainfall, the water
have increased to a point where it washed
away everything in its path. In Makhushane
village near the royal kraal, a bridge is on the
brink of collapse.
The bridge has not been repaired and it
poses a great threat to commuters and pedestrians.
It is likely only a matter of time before it
crumbles due to the load it carries from buses
and taxis on a daily basis. Attempts to solicit a
comment from Ba-Phalaborwa municipal
spokesperson, Eliot Ramachela, regarding the
bridge drew a blank.
Roads in Honeyville section in Makhushane
were also washed away as a result of the
rainfall.
The rain continued for so long throughout
the festive season that new potholes are appearing in the roads and the old ones are
growing even bigger. Sand has been washed
onto the roads, making it difficult to drive. This
could result in a major increase in accidents.
The potholes are also costing the road users
and some lodge owners a fortune, who state
that business is slow because people are wary
of the potholes leading to the lodges.
During the dry season, many people don’t
realise that their roofs and walls are not in
good shape, and they only notice the costly
leakages after heavy rains such as experienced
this festive season.
Apart from the disarray caused by the heavy
rainfall, residents are at greater risk to be
infected with diseases such as malaria and
other communicable diseases.
The continuous rainfall could also have a
negative impact on the agricultural sector
because top fertile soil is washed away, resulting in farmers producing poor quality and
quantity products leading to starvation, especially for the subsistence farmers who depend solely on their produce.
Whilst this is the case, some believe that the
heavy rainfall is a gift from above as it cleanses
the air and the earth.
The vast amount of rain can also be considered a safety hazard. Parents and guardians
should make sure they guard their children,
especially around rivers and dams and dilapidated buildings.

Near violence at
council nominations
By: Maria Maleto
There were more tears of sorrow than of joy
for members of the Zakes Ngoasheng ANC
branch in Namakgale at Mhalamhala Primary
School on Sunday during the nominations of
possible councillors for the next local government elections.
The branch also elected a new Branch
Executive Committee (BEC) wherein Eliot
Ramachela was ousted by Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality councillor, TJ Malatji as the new
chairperson of the branch.
Over 200 members of the branch witnessed
political tensions (ideological conflicts)
between the ousted and the newly elected
leaders to the extent where violence nearly
broke loose outside the hall.
According to an inside source who wished to
remain anonymous, "there were more hierarchical disputes than cooperation in making
the elections a success. This could be the
scramble of the Zakes Ngoasheng branch,
because of the divisions that now exist due to
the elections. This was supposed to unite and
strengthen the branch, not the opposite."
Amongst others elected to the new BEC are
Caroline Hlatswayo as the deputy chairperson,
Percy Maphanzela as the secretary, Solly Mongale as deputy secretary and Mary Mojapelo as
treasurer. Ten additional members to the BEC
were also elected.
The Proportional Councillors nominees are
Rose Popela, Dinko Selala, Stella Mathebula,
Xoli Legau, John Matlou, David Maake, TJ
Malatji and Mary Mojapelo. The screening
committee and the community will attempt to
work hand in hand to ensure that suitable
candidates are elected as councillors.
Some of the basic requirements to be considered for councillorship are to have contributed to the ANC and the community vastly,
as well as be willing and able to go the extra
mile in service delivery, serve people with
dignity and integrity, and have good leadership
and people skills.
ANC Secretary General, Gwede Mantashe,
advised that people should be elected not
because one stands to benefit when they are in
power and because they are well-known, but
only because of their contributions to the ANC
and the community.
Another source who chose to remain anonymous also indicated that people ended up
feeling obligated and intimidated to elect
certain persons because they had to vote with
a show of hands.
"No one wants to be an outcast; they should
have chosen the ballot paper method of voting
where our democratic rights would have not
been violated. What happened to the spirit of
"Ubuntu" and togetherness amongst South
Africans, wherein people worked together in
order to make the country a peaceful and
progressive place to live in?" asked the
source.
Bek-en-Klou onder beheer
Police arrest 11 suspects
DIE Bek-en-Klou padblokkades in die
Gravelotte omgewing is amptelik opgehef.
Streng veiligheids maatreëls is toegepas
sedert die uitbreek en verkeie rolspelers is
onlangs vereer vir hulle bydrae tot die
bekam-ping van die siekte.
Lulekani police arrested 11 people over the
past week for various criminal activities.
One male was arrested for rape, two for
assault with intent to cause grievous bodily
harm, one for crimen injuria and one for
hunting without a permit.
One male was arrested for violating the road
traffic act, two for public drinking, one for
resisting arrest and a male and female for
common assault.
With all the rain the area has been privileged to witness over the past few weeks, comes a silent
killer. Malaria is breaking out in the region and doctors are warning people to take more
precautions whilst travelling, or even just while staying home.
Doctors warn against malaria
By: Melissa Albert
Due to the immense amount of rain that the
Ba-Phalaborwa region has experienced over
December, and with more rain still expected,
mosquitoes are breeding at an alarming rate.
Doctors in and around the area wish to
extend a malaria warning to the public.
Malaria kills over one million people each
year, most of whom are children under the age
of five. Each year there are over 300 million
clinical cases of malaria - five times as many
cases as TB, AIDS, measles and leprosy combined. Malaria is responsible for one out of
every four childhood deaths in Africa.
There are four kinds of malaria that humans
can be infected with. These are P. falciparum, P.
ovale, P. vivax and P. malariae.
P. falciparum is by far the most dangerous.
Unfortunately, it is also the most common.
The general symptoms of malaria include:
High fever, chills, shaking, extreme sweating,
fatigue, discomfort, headaches, muscle ache,
nausea and vomiting.
If you show any of the above mentioned
symptoms, please consult your doctor as soon
as possible.
Preventing malaria is always simpler than
curing the virus once it has been contracted.
Here are a few simple ways you can protect
yourself and your family.
You should do whatever you can to keep
from getting bitten by mosquitoes. If you can,
sleep in a room with screens on the windows
and doors. Use a mosquito net over your bed. If
possible, spray the net with permethrin, a spray
that repels mosquitoes. During the evening,
wear light-coloured pants and shirts with long
sleeves.
It's important to protect yourself with a bug
repellent spray that contains no more than 35%
of a chemical called DEET. Avoid going outdoors without protection in the evening, when
mosquitoes are typically more active. Medicine is also available to help prevent malaria.
Stay safe during the next few months as this is
the time of year that mosquitoes are at their
most active.

A mob from Mashishimale
Mosemaneng village attacked
ANC Mopani Regional Executive
Committee (REC) members at
Leswene Centre on Sunday, alleging that they are being taken
for a ride by the ruling party.
The mob, made up of about 300
villagers, prevented the delegation from entering the venue, resulting in a lot of pushing and
insults.
The mob claimed that the REC
is trying to divide Makhushane
and Mashishimale villages, even
though the two villages are part of
the same tribe.
"They want all the councillors
to come from Makhushane. Are
they telling us that we are dumb in
Mosemaneng? We are never considered for jobs in the municipality. Enough is enough. We do
not want them on our soil again,"
said an angry villager.
The
Phalaborwa/Hoedspruit
Herald attended an urgent Branch
Executive Committee (BEC) meeting of the Matome Malatji Branch
in Makhushane, where it was alleged that the mob was organised
by Mpiko BEC members: Triphinah Sekwela, Lisca Mojela and
Julia Nkoane.
The branch secretary, Freddy
Machete, said that he was reliably
informed that certain members,
who are Ward and PR councillor
candidates for the municipal elections, called the media to come to
the ANC meeting without getting
permission from the secretariat.
Machethe said that they dealt
with the matter ‘hands on’ and
their initial findings where that the
aforementioned members acted
in a manner that was against ANC
principles.
Elsewhere, TJ Malatji and Percy
Maphanzela convincingly beat
Elliot Ramachela and Erick
Hlungwani for the chairperson
and secretariat seats during the
Zakes Ngoasheng Branch leadership elections held at Mhalamhala Primary School in Namakgale on Sunday.
The elections took place under
a huge presence of Namakgale
SAPS officers after the branch
failed to elect a new leadership on
six occasions, as both camps accused each other of manipulating
membership.
Malatji and Maphanzela's victories are viewed by many as a
downfall to the camp opposing
the current ANC Ba-Phalaborwa
sub-regional leadership.

Grade 8 Fransies enjoy fun with their seniors
These new Grade 8 learners from Frans du Toit High School proved that they will do anything
to make sure that their new matrics love them, even if that meant walking around with a face

This new Grade 8 learner of Frans du Toit High

in partnership with YouTube.
Contributors whose submissions were
chosen are credited as co-directors, and 26 of
them have been invited to attend the world
premiere of the film on Thursday, January 27,
as part of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.
Viewers worldwide are invited to tune into
the live stream on youtube.com/lifeinaday for
their only chance to see the film before it
comes out on YouTube, on DVD, and in
theaters in 2011 (in certain regions). Following
the premiere, festival director John Cooper will
moderate a global Q&A with Macdonald and
the 26 filmmakers. For viewers who will be
unable to tune in at 18:00 MT, the film will be
re-broadcast on youtube.com/lifeinaday on
January 28 at 19:00 local time, and subtitled in
25 languages.
The 26 contributors invited to attend the
premiere span the globe from Egypt to the
Ukraine. Their film clips capture a wide array
of life experiences, including a Korean man
who has been cycling the world for 9 years, a
young mother battling cancer, a Russian freerunner making Moscow his playground, and of
course, Bismeyer's ‘Elephants swimming by
moonlight’.
SKOLENUUS
PHALABORWA HERALD - Vrydag 14 Januarie 2011
Some of the learners from Sebalamakgolo High School in Namakgale
who also passed Grade 12: Kgaugelo Monyela, Naomi Molapo and
Jafta Malatji (back).
PAGE 9
These learners from Sebalamakgolo High School received their matric
results on Thursday. Candy Mphakane and Reshoketswe Ramosa
qualify to enrol for diplomas. Mphakane wants to study cost management accounting, while Ramosa intends to venture into the human
resource field.
A learner from Meridian College in Phalaborwa, Tshepo Sekome, was jubilant when he
received his Grade 12 results on Thursday.
Meridian College’s matrics perform well
Prospective students who passed their Grade 12 at Sebalamakgolo
High School. Dimakatso Chokwe and Suzan Rakgoale received their
results on Thursday.
By: Given Sebashe
The excitement and mood of the festive season was put
aside on Thursday by thousands of 2010 matriculants who
anxiously awaited their results at their various schools.
The 2010 matric exams were very challenging, with the
lengthy teachers’ strike and the World Cup disruptions.
But despite these challenges, many of the matriculants of
Ba-Phalaborwa performed well.
An overwhelming 81% pass rate was achieved by
Meridian College in Phalaborwa. The school has improved
from 72% which was recorded by the class of 2009.
One of the Meridian matriculants, Tshepo Sekome,
attained university entrance and qualifies to enrol for a
degree. "I am intending to study BCom
accounting at the
University of Limpopo," said Sekoma.
Another excited
learner,
Innocent
Hoërskool Frans du Toit is aangewys as een
word.
Mabuza, could not contain her excitement as she was
given her results.
She is amongst those who qualified to further their studies
at tertiary level. Mabuza qualifies to enrol for a degree and
she has already been admitted to study law at the University of Johannesburg.
Elsewhere, Sebalamakgolo High School in Namakgale
dropped from a 91% pass rate in 2009 to 77,4%.
The school had 155 learners registered to write the Grade
12 examinations. According to the school principal, Kosyn
Pilusa, learners who failed struggled with history and
geography. However, other learners passed well and will
be going on to tertiary level.
