possibility, Untouchable has broken box office records in its native
France and all across Europe. Based on a true story of friendship
between a disabled millionaire (Cluzet) and his street smart ex-con
caretaker (Omar Sy), Untouchable depicts an unlikely camaraderie
rooted in honesty and humour between two individuals who, on
the surface, would seem to have nothing in common.

In the mid 21st Century, time travel
has been invented but it is illegal and only available on the black
market. When the mob needs to get rid of someone, they send
their target 30 years into the past, where a ‘looper’, a hired gun
like Joe (Gordon-Levitt), is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich

The third collaboration of
Keira (Knightley) with

Wright, following the awardwinning box office successes Pride & Prejudice and Atonement, is a bold,
theatrical new vision of the epic story of love, adapted from Tolstoy’s
timeless novel by Tom Stoppard. Set in late-19th-century Russia highsociety, the aristocrat Anna Karenina enters into a life-changing affair
with the affluent Count Vronsky (Johnson). The story powerfully
explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart.

When Aurora is hospitalised, she
sends her neighbour, Pilar, to pass
word of her grave condition to Gian Luca, a man of which no one has
ever heard her speak. Pilar’s quest to fulfil her friend’s wish transports us
to Africa fifty years earlier, where Aurora is involved in a forbidden love
affair with Gian Luca, her husband’s best friend. Their moving, poetic
tale is conveyed through the older Gian Luca’s suave voiceover,
combined with the lush, melodious sounds of its heady, tropical setting,
peppered with a soundtrack of Phil Spector songs.
‘A film that knows cinema inside out, and uses it to work pure magic...
If it isn’t the year’s best, I can’t wait to see what that might be.’ Tim
Robey, The Telegraph *****

2011, 102 mins
Samsara reunites
director Ron Fricke and

Magidson, whose
award-winning films
Baraka and Chronos
were acclaimed for combining visual and musical artistry. Filmed over a
period of almost five years and in twenty-five countries, the film
transports us to sacred grounds, disaster zones, industrial sites, and

Samsara subverts our expectations of a traditional documentary, instead
encouraging our own inner interpretations inspired by images and music
that infuses the ancient with the modern.

middle-class Roman (Benigni) who suddenly finds himself Rome’s
biggest celebrity; a young provincial couple drawn into separate
romantic encounters; and an American opera director (Allen)
endeavouring to put a singing mortician on stage.
Sun 14th & Mon 15th October
Dir. Pete Travis, USA/UK/India, 2012,
95 mins
Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby,

The future America is an irradiated
waste land. On its East Coast lies
Mega City One, a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the
chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the cops known as
‘Judges’ who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant
executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Urban) is
the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge,
a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing
reality at a fraction of its normal speed. ‘Showing what the comic book
genre can be at its best.’ – Joe Walsh, Film4 ****

Claire (Ascaride) have their
idyllic and selfless lives
shattered by a crime, they are
forced to take stock. Are their good deeds really good enough? Are the
criminals really all bad? This beautifully performed film earns all its
impressive emotional moments by following them as the couple try to
right themselves; it’s a thrill to see if their innate decency will prevail. It’s
made with a sure and steady hand that never takes shortcuts with its
important message.’ – Phelim O’Neill – The Guardian ****
