Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston,
Reese Witherspoon, Benicio del
Toro, Jena Malone, Maya Rudolph,
Martin Short
Contemporary master Paul Thomas Anderson’s (There Will Be
Blood, The Master) hilarious, jubilant Inherent Vice is the first
ever adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel. Set in kaleidoscopic
1970s California, it stars Joaquin Phoenix as a shambolic
private investigator tasked with a curious mystery. Trippy and
convoluted, by turns colourfully antic and dreamily woozy, with
a killer cast including Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Martin Short and
Reese Witherspoon.

Steve Coogan, Ricky Gervais
The final entry in the hit

Dir | Leila Sansour | Palestine /
UAE / UK / USA | 2013 | 90 mins
Documentary
From writer/director Leila
Sansour, this is a remarkable
documentary about Bethlehem –
home to the majority of
Palestine’s Christians and
Sansour’s own hometown.
Returning to document a year in the city as it’s encircled by the
‘separation wall’ built by Israelis around the West Bank, this is a
courageous film taking in the suffering and strength of a Palestinian
community.
Dir: Paul King | 2014 | UK |
Cast | Hugh Bonneville, Nicole
Kidman, Sally Hawkins, Julie Waters,
Ben Whishaw (voice)
Everyone’s favourite ursine stowaway
gets the big-screen treatment in this
handsome adaptation of Michael Bond’s beloved books. A young
Peruvian bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) with a passion for all things
British travels to London, in search of a new home. Lost and alone at
Paddington Station, he’s saved by the friendly Brown family who take
him under their wing.
TESTAMENT OF YOUTH (12A)*

Dir: James Kent | UK | 2014 |
130 mins
Cast | Alicia Vikander, Dominic
West, Hayley Atwell, Miranda
Richardson, Kit Harington
Adapted from Vera Brittain’s
classic memoir, famed for its
vivid portrayal of a generation
lost to WWI, the indelibly moving Testament of Youth stars Alicia Vikander
as the young Vera, showing her as a carefree teenager before the war’s
shattering impact on her and her contemporaries’ lives, futures and
dreams. “Alicia Vikander gives a glorious performance [...] thrillingly astute” ****
Tim Robey, The Telegraph

Vorobyev
Robin Campillo, writer of
Laurent Cantet’s Palme
d’Or winner The Class and

observes some of the bleaker aspects of inter-EU immigration.

performances from Keaton, Ed Norton, Emma Stone and Naomi Watts,
and invested with an endlessly creative spirit, Birdman is a unique satire
and a feast for the eyes and the mind.

Clint Eastwood’s (Million Dollar
Baby) superb, taut film as Navy
SEAL Chris Kyle, the most lethal

over questions of heroism and moral ambiguity, aided by superb turns
from Cooper and Sienna Miller.

Fri 27th February to Mon 2nd March
Dir | Stephen Daldry | USA | 2014 |
114 mins
Cast | Rooney Mara, Martin Sheen,
Wagner Moura, Selton Mello
Stephen Daldry’s (Billy Elliott)
searing film follows three Brazilian
teens who spend their days picking
through litter in Rio’s brutal slums.
Finding something incendiary in the trash, they’re brought into conflict
with corrupt officials. Seeking help from Father Juilliard (Martin Sheen)
and aid worker Olivia (Rooney Mara) they must solve the riddle before
someone dangerous does. Suspenseful, moving, and brilliant.
Dir: Morten Tyldum | UK | USA |
2014 | 113 mins
Cast | Benedict Cumberbatch,

Goode

Film Review: Benedict Cumberbatch is odds-on to be nominated for an
Oscar... 'It’s the performance of his career in what is also the best British
film of the year.' – The Independent *****
