brilliantly crafted horror. She’s Jesse, an aspiring model in L. A. who
becomes trapped in an amoral Hollywood of glamour, exoticism and
depraved ultraviolence. With Jena Malone, Christina Kendricks, Bella

George Clooney stars in the Coen brothers’ delightfully eccentric
adventure. In Depression-era Mississippi, three men on a prison chain
gang – Everett (Clooney), Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson) and Pete (John
Turturro) – embark on a Homerian odyssey when, still in shackles, they
make a run for their lives. Wistfully comic, beautifully filmed and with a
stunning country soundtrack, it’s a wonderfully atmospheric,
rambunctious ride.
SWEET BEAN (PG)
Sun 11th & Mon 12th September
Dir: Naomi Kawase | Japan| 2015 | 113
mins | Japanese w/English subtitles
Cast: Kirin Kiki, Masatoshi Nagase,
Kyara Uchida
Naomi Kawase's (The Mourning
Forest) Sweet Bean is a graceful, delicate and absorbing drama. Sweet bean
paste is the filling of the dorayaki pancakes that Sentaro (Masatoshi
Nagase) sells from his bakery every day. A lonely and remote man, Sentaro
cooks with skill but little enthusiasm. Then he hires eccentric 76-year-old
Tokue (Kirin Kiki), who brings with her a new, secret recipe for bean paste,
and together they cook; gradually sharing stories about their lives.
Gorgeously shot and wonderfully performed, Kawase balances elements of
tragedy against those of hope and wisdom in this gentle, unassuming but
profoundly affecting tale.

Sat 17th September
Dir: Woody Allen | 1977 | USA | 93
mins
Cast: Woody Allen, Diane Keaton,
Tony Roberts, Carol Kane, Paul
Simon, Christopher Walken
Described by director Woody Allen as a “major turning point”, the
effervescent, masterful and multi Oscar-winning romantic comedy Annie

contemporary director. Allen plays neurotic comedian Alvy Singer,
contemplating the joys and anxieties of modern love as he falls in and
out of it with aspiring singer Annie (a brilliant Diane Keaton).
JULIETA (15)*

Dir: Pedro Almodóvar | Spain | 2016 |
96 mins | Spanish w/English subtitles
Cast: Emma Suárez, Adriana Ugarte,
Michelle Jenner, Rossy de Palma, Inma
Cuesta
Julieta finds Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar (Talk to Her, Volver) in
austere, reflective mode. Based on short stories by Nobel Prize-winning
writer Alice Munro, it follows Julieta, a woman of fifty-five as she writes
to her estranged daughter and in doing so re-explores the secrets of her
past. Starring Emma Suárez and Adriana Ugarte, this is eloquent, richly
resonant filmmaking on Almodóvar’s favourite theme: the interior lives
of women.
GARY NUMAN: ANDROID IN LA LA
LAND WITH Q&A (15)
Sun 18th September
Dir: Steve Read, Rob Alexander | UK/
USA | 2016 | 85 mins
Documentary
A story of love, loss, music & eyeliner. The godfather of electronic
pop, Gary Numan, appears in this insightful documentary following his
move to Hollywood. At the end of the ‘70s, Numan was one of the
world’s most innovative artists, before personal problems brought him
to a long period in the wilderness. Filmed with candour, warmth and
humour, Android In La La Land explores Numan and his family on the
brink of a new life. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the
film's director. Visit www.hbph.co.uk for more details.

mins | Spanish/Arabic w/English

Rokh, Hiba Attalah
Acclaimed Palestinian filmmaker Hany Abu-Assad (Paradise Now, Omar)

Gazan wedding singer who became a worldwide TV sensation in 2013.
Growing up in battle-scarred Gaza, Muhammad dreams of musical
stardom. In his twenties – now struck by tragedy, and desperate to
transcend the troubled place of his birth – he enters Arab Idol, hoping
against all odds to win.
CAPTAIN FANTASTIC (15)*
Fri 23rd to Sun 25th, Tues 27 th, Thurs 29th Sep (Elevenses)

Cast | Viggo Mortensen, Frank
Langella, Kathryn Hahn, George
MacKay
Tues 13th September
Dir: Dylan Reeve, David Farrier | New
Zealand | 2016 | 92 mins
Documentary
This sensational New Zealand
documentary is a fascinating,
disturbing exposé of a story stranger than fiction. Journalist David Farrier
stumbles on a mysterious online competition for ‘endurance tickling’.
Intrigued, he investigates but to his surprise, comes up against fierce
resistance to his questions – only increasing his interest in getting to the
bottom of what gradually reveals itself to be a truly twisted tale.
ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS (15)*
Fri 16th September
Dir: Mandie Fletcher | UK / USA | 2016
| 90 mins
Cast: Jennifer Saunders, Joanna
Lumley, Julia Sawalha, Jon Hamm,
Cara Delevingne
A hilarious feature-length riff on Jennifer Saunders' chaotic PR 'guru'
Edina Monsoon and her former model pal Patsy (Joanna Lumley) as they
cause an unfortunate, supermodel-based incident. With Ab Fab stalwarts
June Whitfield, Julia Sawalha and Jane Horrocks and a host of cameos
from Jon Hamm to Dame Edna Everage, it's fantastically funny.
ASTERIX AND OBELIX: MANSION OF
THE GODS (CERT TBC)
Sat 17th & Sun 18th September
Dir: Louis Clichy, Alexandre Astier |
France/Belgium | 2014 | 85 mins
Voice cast: Jack Whitehall, Nick Frost,
Jim Broadbent, Catherine Tate, Harry
Enfield
The latest in the inventive comic book animation series is set in the year
50 BC and sees Gaul entirely occupied by the Romans, save one last
village. Julius Caesar (Jim Broadbent) has a cunning ploy to charm the
barbaric Gauls, but hasn’t banked on Asterix (Jack Whitehall) and Obelix
(Nick Frost).
Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises,
The Road) stars as an idealistic father in the charming, eccentric Captain
Fantastic. In the lush wilderness of the Pacific Northwest, Ben
(Mortensen) is raising his six children in Thoreau-esque seclusion until a
family crisis forces them to re-enter normal society. Reminiscent of Little
Miss Sunshine in its study of a dysfunctional family finding its way,
Captain Fantastic is a delight from start to finish.
SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS (PG)*
Sat 24th & Sun 25th September
Dir: Philippa Lowthorpe | UK | 2016 |
100 mins
Cast: Gwendoline Christie, Kelly
Macdonald, Jessica Hynes, Andrew
Scott, Rafe Spall
A beautifully realised adaptation of Arthur Ransome's enduring children's
novel, Swallows and Amazons is an inspiring, rambunctious and nostalgic
summer adventure with a first-rate cast including Gwendoline Christie,
Kelly MacDonald and Rafe Spall. Set over an idyllic summer holiday, it
sees the four Walker children and their sailing rivals the Blacketts,
running amok in their boats in the stunning Lake District.
