- the rare and endangered Blue Whale.
Spot these incredible creatures from many

Forest
The Ludlow Tuart Forest is the only natural
stand of Tuart left in the world. Take a

Experience Geographe Bay Wineries & Breweries
“Tantalising tastes, brilliant bouquets ...
... be sure to Savour every drop!”
The Margaret River Wine Region has become one of the great
wine-producing regions of the world, but it doesn’t stop there
with the emergence of some equally impressive boutique breweries.
Wine Varieties
The Mediterranean style climate means
vineyards are not affected by extreme
summer and winter temperatures creating
perfect growing conditions for a range of
grape varieties. The region is perhaps best
known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and
Cabernet blends, but it is also the producer
of some of Australia’s best Chardonnay.
Varieties such as Shiraz and SemillonSauvignon Blanc blends have gained
increasing attention in recent years and
there is a host of new varieties emerging
such as Mourvedre, Grenache, Sangiovese
and Voignier.
Wine Tasting
There are over 120 wine producers in the
region, most of which have Cellar Doors
allowing you to taste their range of wines.
Cellar Doors range from small, rustic affairs
to impressive feats of architecture and
design. Tasting wines is easy once you know
how – just follow the basic guidelines of
swirl, sniff, sip and savour. Don’t be afraid to
ask the cellar door staff to take you through
the tasting and explain the wine to you.
Margaret River Wine Region
14 www.geographebay.com

Many wines are only available at Cellar Door –
a point worth remembering if you are
looking for something unique to take home.
Breweries
Dotted in amongst the vineyards are equally
impressive boutique breweries producing
hand-made traditional style brews with
Indian, German and English influences. As
well as the traditional lager, there are some
more experimental styles to tantalise the
tastebuds including chocolate and chilli beer!
Winery and Brewery Tours operate daily,
so be sure to book your seat today!
If you are not sure where to start, or are
looking for a safe and fun way to explore

Experience Geographe Bay Culture and Heritage
“Journey Back inTime ...
... you’ll be captivated
for hours!”
Visit sites of historical and cultural significance and immerse
yourself in times gone by as you uncover the fascinating past of
the Geographe Bay region.
Early Settlement
Settled in 1834, Busselton is one of the
earliest settlements in Western Australia.
Evidence of this rich history can be seen as
you make your way around the Busselton
townsite.
Built in 1856, the heritage listed Courthouse
Gallery is a ‘courthouse meets art house’
experience. As part of the ArtGeo Cultural
Complex, the Courthouse Gallery offers
colonial architecture featuring original
courtrooms and gaol cells mixed with
contemporary fine art and gifts.
At the other end of town, St Mary’s Church
stands. Built in 1844 of limestone and
jarrah, it is still a place of worship for the
Busselton community.
The Busselton Museum, run by Busselton
Historical Society volunteers, is a great find for
those interested in photographs, furniture,
clothing, farm machinery and butter and
cheese making equipment from days gone by.
Historic Homesteads

family the settlement comprises a
magnificent homestead (1859), and earlier
house (1837) which was later converted into
a dairy, plus a kitchen, stables, blacksmiths,
teacher house and school. These buildings
have all been restored with many original
items and furniture on display.
Closer to Margaret River is Ellensbroook
Homestead, built in 1857 by Alfred and
Ellen Bussell, with the lovely Meekadarabce
Falls walk nearby.
The region’s Aboriginal culture and
pioneering past is bought to life.
Aboriginal Culture

Start the morning in Busselton with a
leisurely walk along the newly refurbished
Busselton Jetty (reopening April 2010) – at its
end you will find the Busselton Jetty
Underwater Observatory (see page 44) where
you can discover life under the sea, without
getting wet! Descend 8m below the waters
surface and uncover an awe-inspiring “forest”
of vividly coloured corals, sponges, fish and
invertebrates. Lunch on the Busselton
beachfront and then spend the afternoon
playing on the shores of Geographe Bay.
Have a game of beach cricket, build a
sandcastle or just relax and enjoy the view.
Day 3 Busselton - Perth
This morning it’s off to Wonky Windm ll
Farm and Eco Park (see page 46). Feed pigs,
ponies, alpacas, emus and many other

Parents can enjoy tastings of preserves,
jams, marmalades, table olives and extra
virgin olive oil or simply take in the tranquil
rural surroundings with a devonshire tea as
the kids play on the lawn. Sadly, it’s time to
head home!
