Early admission
Stryker Ann Vosteen (above),
a senior at Chatham Hall in
Chatham, has been notiÄLKVMOLYLHYS`HJJLW[HUJL
to attend the University of
Richmond next fall. She is
the daughter of Paul and
Madge Vosteen of Clifton
Forge, and the granddaughter of Aubrey and Margie
Hall of Urbanna and Lou
and Annette Vosteen of
Williamsburg.
When Emily Edmonds of
Christchurch meets the preschoolers she teaches at Chesapeake Academy, she is likely
to be greeted not with a shout
of “good morning,” but with a
rousing chorus of “buenos dias!”
Edmonds
moved
to
Christchurch in 2013 with her
husband Matthew, who is a
teacher at Christchurch School.
In her first year at Chesapeake
Academy, Edmonds has joined
veteran
foreign
language
teacher Lilith Andersen of
Hartfield to provide instruction
in foreign language to every
student enrolled at the school.
At Chesapeake Academy,
language instruction begins in
Pre-K 3&4 and is part of the
curriculum at every grade level.
Edmonds meets with younger
students through fifth grade and
says that youngsters’ brains are
“wired for language at this age,”
and from week to week they
show marked proficiency.
“The instructional methodology we use is called teaching
proficiency through reading
and storytelling,” Edmonds
explains. The youngest students
begin by learning the Spanish words for numbers, colors,
shapes, body parts and animal
names. Older ones read books
and often act out stories in
which they communicate with
each other in Spanish.
Sixth-graders exchange their
Spanish texts for one with the
enticing title “Latin is Fun.”
“We believe that learning
Latin is especially helpful in
building vocabulary skills and
preparing students for further
study in modern foreign languages and in English,” said
Andersen, who came to Chesapeake Academy in 2007 and
created the Latin curriculum six
years ago.
Andersen, who also teaches
high school Spanish to seventh
and eighth-graders, notes that

the payoff for studying Latin
is apparent almost immediately. “Students returning to
study Spanish more formally
as they prepare for high school
are more adept at making connections among words and
sentence constructions that are
similar in English or Latin,” she
said.
Classes in the upper grades
are a mixture of vocabularybuilding, reading, writing, conversation and cultural studies.

Rotary International’s long
campaign to eliminate polio
from the face of the earth is
nearing successful completion.
Nigeria in equatorial Africa
is polio’s last stand. Through
the efforts of the World Health
Organization (WHO) with
funding primarily by Rotary
International matched by grants
by The Gates Foundation, the
elimination of polio in Nigeria
is predicted in the near future.
The world’s 1.2 million
Rotarians have accepted a new
gigantic health challenge to
eradicate polio. More than 80%
of all sickness in the world is
caused by unsafe contaminated
water. Eight hundred and eighty
four million people worldwide
(but prominently in Third World
countries) are condemned to
drinking unsafe water and
eating food prepared in unsafe
water.
A partial list of the diseases
caused by contaminated water
Dog Friends seeks 501c3 status
includes bacillary dysentery,
botulism, cholera, diarrhea,
hepatitis A, legionaires disease,
malaria, meningitis, polio, salmonella, typhoid and yellow
fever.
Children under the age of 3
years are particularly susceptible to diarrhea. The WHO estimates that 1.8 million infants
and children under 3 years of
age die each year from diarrhea.
To further dramatize this statistic, that’s a child death worldwide every 8 seconds.
Rotary International has
announced as a stated goal to
reduce the number of world
citizens without access to safe
water by 50% by the end of
2015.
All over the world individual Rotary clubs are taking on
as club projects the funding
of expense to dig deep water
wells away from contaminated
surface water and necessary
pumping equipment to make
safe water available in particular localities around the world.
Dog Friends will meet at
Virginia Street Cafe on Tuesday, January 14, at noon with
an attorney who will help the
group make application for a
501-C category with the IRS for
its “Friends for Life” fund.
The attorney who has volunteered to help Dog Friends
is Genevieve K. Dybing of
Topping, a member of the distinguished Richmond law firm
McCandlish Holton.
Friends for Life is already a
tax-exempt organization under
the county auspices and all
donations are now tax-deductible. However, qualifying for
501c3 will help the group
receive grant money.
Dog Friends has now grown
to 208 members. The group is
asking for contributions from
animal lovers in the county to
help them build the county’s
first Dog Friends Park next to
the Middlesex Animal Facility at Cooks Corner. Contributions should be made payable
to Friends for Life and mailed

I want my patients to know that when
they walk through our doors they are
in a place where they will be taken
care of, and that together we will find
solutions to any health issues they may
experience. I always try to put myself
into their shoes. Without empathy and
understanding you cannot deliver quality
care. My goal is to empower my patients
to take control of their own health.

Father Johnson to be instituted as
rector of All Saints Anglican Church
Morning Bible studies
resume at Zoar Baptist
This Sunday, January 12, at the 11 a.m.
worship service, Father Jeff Johnson will be
instituted as the rector for All Saints Anglican Church in Saluda by Bishop Donald F.
Lerow, Bishop Ordinary for the Diocese of the
Mid-Atlantic States of the Anglican Catholic
Church (ACC). Fr. Johnson has been serving
for two years at All Saints, first as a deacon for
six months, then as “priest-in-charge” for the
last year and a half.
A priest-in-charge is appointed by the
bishop as a temporary measure while the
parish grows and becomes established. The
bishop can move priests-in-charge from place
to place as needs arise. Since All Saints moved
from being a mission to being a full-fledged,
self-supporting parish last June, the congregation has been authorized to call a rector. The
rector is the permanent priest who becomes
responsible for the long-term spiritual growth
and well-being of the parish.
Fr. Johnson remarked, “This is a big day
The Women’s Wednesday
Morning Bible Study and
the Men’s Thursday Morning
Bible Study will resume this
week and continue throughout
the winter and spring months.
Both groups meet at the Zoar
Baptist Church fellowship hall
in Deltaville and are open to
everyone in the community.
Both studies welcome dropins and encourage visitors.
Participants do not need to
purchase a book. These studies
both meet for about an hour.
The Men’s Bible Study is
led by Dr. John Snow, pastor
of Zoar. The group continues to study disciplines of the
Bible and meets at 9 a.m. every
Thursday morning. Group
for All Saints and for me! It is another step of
strengthening our parish with a greater sense
of permanence and direction. Up to now I’ve
served at All Saints at the pleasure of our
bishop. Now, All Saints will have a permanent
priest and I will have a permanent parish home.”
Bishop Lerow and his wife Karolie will be
visiting from Jacksonville, N.C. The bishop
served for 30 years in the U.S. Navy, first as
a Methodist chaplain and later as an Anglican Catholic chaplain. The ceremony, called
An Office of Institution in the 1928 Book of
Common Prayer, dates from 1804. It has symbolic gestures of presenting the new rector with
the keys to the church as well as prayers asking
for the Lord’s blessing on the ministry of the
instituted rector. The institution will be followed
by Holy Communion.
Visitors are most welcome to the institution
and to see the newly-refurbished interior of the
former Centenary Church located in front of the
new Middlesex County Courthouse.

Best wishes for 2014
The board of Hands Across
Middlesex and our many volunteers wish to express our
sincere wish for a happy and
successful New Year to all of
our friends and supporters. It
was a blessed 2013 for us and
we hope to continue our goal of
helping all in need or crisis. It
is, as they say, impossible to list
all of those who have assisted
our mission—all we can say is
God bless you and keep us all
safe and comfortable.
Hands in 2014 will strive
to maintain its many different
outreach programs. The Food
Pantry continues to evolve
with the addition of a nurse
available on pantry days to
answer questions and do blood
pressure checks. Even the cold
months have not deterred our
goal of providing more fresh
produce. With the addition of
the USDA program in 2013,
we are able to continue to provide supplemental assistance
to all qualified families.
The cold weather has challenged our programs in other
ways. We have an ongoing
need for portable electric heaters. Many of our families need
to save on utility costs by lowering furnace temperatures and
then using a portable heater
for the one room they occupy.
Please consider a donation of
a portable heater if you are
able. Additionally, our Clothing Closet, which provides free
assistance to our clients, needs
winter coats in good condition.
All sizes for adults and children are needed.
Many of our programs are
supported by funding from our
twice-monthly yard sales. One
hundred percent of all income
goes directly to our programs
and mission that operates with
all volunteers. Your donations
of household items make so
much possible. A refrigerator
may go to a family without one;
a sofa to another family after a
fire. Many items are sold and
the funding ends up building a
handicapped ramp for a stroke
victim or replacing a broken
toilet in a senior’s home. We
sincerely thank you for your
donations and hope you will
continue to consider us in 2014.
Please feel free to stop by
The Cryer Center on Route
33 at Locust Hill and see what
we do; we are your link to the
community and families in
need. Our hours are 10 a.m.-4
p.m., Tuesday through Friday.
You can also call 758-2044.
Volunteers are always needed.
And again, thank you and
our best wishes for 2014.
In memory of Susan Knapp,
owner of Dobe Run, Saluda, Va.
With gratitude. Rest in peace.
