From the Editor
Just read that Lars Larsen and Jysk
(Sengetøjslager) has opened a store in
Djakarta – wonder when we’ll get Danish
doonas in Australia. On the other hand,
the autumn weather has been very mild,
great opportunity to work in the garden or
relax with a good book (and maybe a bag
of Matador Mix) indoors and not worry too
much about warm doonas! Our actors
from Fyn certainly enjoyed the mild
temperatures, their heavy coats remained
packed away during their brief stay in
Brisbane. It was a pleasure showing them
around town, we walked through New Farm
Park, caught the CityCat into South Bank,
went into the Performing Arts Centre,
crossed the Victoria Bridge, visited the
Casino (purely for research purposes of
course), Wintergarden, Post Office (what
have they done to the old building inside?)
and then back to the Powerhouse. They
also went to the Mt Coot-tha lookout and
Lone Pine for the koalas and kangaroos.
Sunday we went for a quick walk through
the markets at Redcliffe, saw the Bee Gees
memorial (not many people know the story
about Redcliffe and the Bee Gees!). It’s
lovely to have Danish visitors and get new
insights into what’s happening in Denmark;
I’m forever surprised how alike we are in
this globalised world.
A thank you note from Christian and Karen Skou:
Our 40th anniversary party was held at the Danish Club on April 5th and we
had a fantastic night. We would like to thank Lone and Søren for all their
help before and on the night of the party! Also a big thank you to
everybody involved with the food. We have had only the very best
feedback, in fact everybody loved the food!! Thank you to Alan too who
not only worked hard in the bar but also was a brilliant photographer and to
Ulla, who created the beautiful flower arrangements.
Such a great venue to have a party. A great time was had by all with lots of
dancing to our favourite band, Chocolate Strings.
Been thinking about cleaning up the yard,
trimming the trees, fixing the picture hooks or
cleaning up around the house?
Call Henning straightaway!
What’s on at the Danish Club?

AGAIN THIS YEAR
SATURDAY 21 JUNE 2014 from 4 pm
“Black Forest” 110 (149) Byrnes Road North, Joyner QLD 4501
This will be a time to celebrate the Danish culture within its Viking history!
There will be food and drink to buy, a raffle and an opportunity to catch up with friends around a
campfire. Then we will move on to a round of Vi elsker vort land by the side of the bonfire ... and
yes, this year it will light!
Some recent work on the track to the site means that those people who need to be dropped down
at the site can be. We ask that parking still be along the road.
So come and join us at our Viking village. Don’t forget to bring along a torch, a comfy chair and
warm clothes. And if you have some Viking garb, then bring that along too!

NEW LOOK FOR THE OLD CLUB
Story and photo by Soren Hoimark
New fascia
The old fascia wasn’t looking too good – some of the timber had
rotted away and despite painting and other maintenance, the
time had come for a change.
Many thanks to Simon Johansen’s company, zctechnical, that
specialises in handling big construction work.
They carried out the work – with the usual help of volunteers,
Alan and Soren for part of the job – and did so on time and on
budget, and I think we can be very pleased by the result.
The old red awning over the main entry was also replaced – it
had passed its use by date and Simon designed a very special and
trendy awning in zinc – look up next time you enter.
We connected the fascia all the way through so we now have a
continuous façade and I reckon the result is very nice!

Study & Stay in Australia?
Your door to the best in Australian Education & Training….
IAE Study In Australia is owned and operated by a Dane – Riborg Andersen – a former teacher and senior
government employee, with a strong background in both Danish and Australian education and training. We
are a professional International Education Agent, with over 18 years’ experience.
Did you know that when Denmark decided that it wanted every senior secondary student to have an
international experience, the Danish Undervisningsministeriet invited Riborg, as the only Australia
representative, to run workshops for Danish secondary schools seeking to establish relationships with
international counterparts, to encourage their students to have an international study experience? Using our
knowledge and expertise, we help Danish (and many other international students) to come and study in
Australia. Do you have family or friends in Denmark wanting to come and study in Australia?
We are here to help.
 For individual students, we can help you to find a suitable school, college or university taking into
account a student’s academic background, family/friendship ties in Australia, their strengths and
interests, budget and aims. We place students into primary and secondary schools, TAFEs and
universities all over Australia.
 For Danish schools, colleges and universities, we can help you to identify suitable partner
institutions in Australia, and develop successful Study Abroad programs. Over the years, we have
established such programs between Australian institutions and schools/colleges in Aalborg, Aarhus,
Skanderborg, Silkeborg, Køge and Roskilde among other places.
Tell us what your aims are, and we can find the best way forward. Did you know Australia now offers a 485
Graduate Visa for students graduating from any 2-year Australian Bachelor or Master’s degree, and wanting
to stay in Australia for another 2 years to work and/or play? Want to know more? Ask us. And the best
news …We do not charge any service fee, as we are paid by the Australian schools, colleges and
universities. We look forward to hearing from you.

NORWAY CELEBRATES 17 MAY – why?
(photo: www.visitoslo.com)
The Constitution of Norway was signed at Eidsvoll on May 17 in the year 1814. The
constitution declared Norway to be an independent kingdom in an attempt to avoid
being ceded to Sweden after Denmark–Norway's devastating defeat in the
Napoleonic Wars.
The celebration of this day began spontaneously among students and others from
early on. However, Norway was at that time in a union with Sweden (following the
Convention of Moss in August 1814) and for some years the King of Sweden and
Norway was reluctant to allow the celebrations. For a few years during the 1820s,
King Karl Johan actually banned it, believing that celebrations like this were in fact a
kind of protest and disregard — even revolt — against the union. The king's attitude
changed after the Battle of the Square in 1829, an incident which resulted in such a
commotion that the king had to allow commemorations on the day. It was, however,
not until 1833 that public addresses were held, and official celebration was initiated
near the monument of former government minister Christian Krohg, who had spent
much of his political life curbing the personal power of the monarch. The address
was held by Henrik Wergeland, thoroughly witnessed and accounted for by an
informant dispatched by the king himself.
After 1864 the day became more established when the first children's parade was
launched in Christiania, at first consisting only of boys. This initiative was taken by
Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, although Wergeland made the first known children's parade
at Eidsvoll around 1820. It was only in 1899 that girls were allowed to join in the
parade for the first time.
17 May is celebrated worldwide.

Zooming in on … Næstved
Næstved is a commercial town on the island of Zealand in Denmark. It has a population of
about 42,000 and is located an hour away from Copenhagen.
This diorama at the Næstved Museum shows Næstved as it
appeared circa 1600. Næstved has roots as far back as 400-500
BC. Archaeological material from this period has been found in
the soil under Næstved, and tells of human life here long before
the Viking era.
In 1135, Benedictine monks received Saint Peter's Church and
surrounding land in order to found St. Peter's Priory. This is seen as the foundation of the
town of Næstved, although the town appears to have existed
already at that time, being both big and important to the region.
Valdemar IV of Denmark (Valdemar Atterdag) shown on a fresco
in Saint Peter's Church in Næstved (Sankt Peders Kirke).
Museums Næstved has a range of museums of local importance.
In the city centre, Næstved Museum offers the full story of
Næstved - from the very first settlements to this day. In
Stenboderne, near St. Peter's Church, a collection of ancient
findings are on show, including pottery, armory and more.
Næstved City Centre The heart of the city has a large pedestrian area. Every Wednesday
and Saturday there's a market in the city centre on "Axeltorv" (Axle Square) - a very old
square, dating back to the founding of the city. The cosy environment with various shops,
the marketplace and a vast variety of cafes is very popular with tourists and locals alike.
Near the sea, with the harbour in the city centre, Næstved was traditionally a city of
industry. In recent years, though, industry in the city centre has decreased, as production
has moved to the outskirts of the city - primarily on Ydernæs.
Novenco is Næstved's largest industry. For more than 60 years, Novenco has been among
the world leaders in supplying HVAC system. The develop and manufacture high quality
heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions for land and marine
applications, along with numerous other products including fire-fighting products and
systems. Sold in 1999 to overseas investors, the company was acquired by a Danish
investment company in 2006.
Holmegaard Glass Factory The history of Holmegaard glassworks began in 1823, when
Count Christian Danneskiold-Samsøe sought permission from the King of Denmark to
establish a glassworks at Holmegaard Mose. However, the Count died in 1823 without
receiving an answer to his request. His widow, Countess Henriette Danneskiold-Samsøe,
decided to pursue the project when, shortly after the death of her husband, she received
permission from the King to establish a glassworks. The factory was to be located in the bog
because there was sufficient fuel there to produce the high temperatures needed for the
glass kiln.
Initial production at Holmegaard glassworks began in 1825. Early on, the factory produced
only green bottles, but Henriette also wanted to produce
clear glass tumblers, and the Bohemian glassblowers were
able to manufacture these. The history of Holmegaard
glassworks is a story of a few small glassworks in a peat
bog, growing to become part of a large modern group
over a period of 185 years. During the 20th century, artists
entered the equation, designing and shaping
Holmegaard’s glass products. This was the start of a long
and proud tradition, and as a result, even to this very day,
some of the best artists in Denmark are associated with
Holmegaard’s glass production.
BonBon Land Næstved is home to an amusement park in
Holme Olstrup, just 10 minutes from the city center. The
park has increased dramatically in size over recent years, and is one of the most visited
sights in all of Denmark today.
Recently, a new feature has been added to the amusement park in Holme Olstrup. It is
called Fantasy World, and used to be located in Ringsted. However, the "world" has been
bought by BonBon Land, and is now located right next to it. Fantasy World features a huge
exhibition of Santa Claus, his home, his workshop and all of his little helpers.
Herlufsholm Kostskole Herlufsholm Boarding School is located in the old Herlufsholm
Kloster, on the banks of the Suså just outside the town of
Næstved. For centuries students have attended the school, which
enjoys a very respectable reputation. Today, the boarding school
attracts students from all levels of society.
It houses various collections of scientific materials.
Gavnø Castle is located on the
island of Gavnø near Næstved.
The castle is known for its
tulips and a large collection of
paintings. Already in the 12th
century there was a pirate's
castle at the island. In 1398,
however, it was purchased by
Queen Margrethe the Ist, who
turned it into a convent for
"unmarried women of noble
rank". Today Gavnø Castle is
one of Denmark's finest rococo castles, where the visitor will find a great many things of
interest, e.g. the largest privately owned collection of paintings in Scandinavia.
The castle has a vast variety of exhibitions during the year. The Gavnø Classic Autojumble is
Denmark's largest exhibition of classic cars, and takes place every summer. Also there is a
Christmas Market in the gardens during two weekends in November.
Kähler Ceramics The history of "Kähler" has its beginning in 1839, when Herman Kähler
took over an old pottery in Næstved, and founded the Kähler ceramic workshop.
For centuries, the Kähler ceramics has been world renowned for its high quality and unique
designs, and the pottery has been on the cutting edge of Danish ceramic art for more than
100 years. Every piece of Kähler is still handmade.
The old pottery is still located downtown Næstved on "Kählersbakken", a ten-minute walk
from Axeltorv Square in the city centre.

Thanks to Danish Art & Cultural Exchange (DACE), the Jorck Foundation in Denmark
and the Dannebrog Foundation, Melbourne, we had the pleasure of a live performance
in Danish at the club last Saturday 10 May 2014. The actors were both on stage for
just over two hours (with one intermission). The play is based on their correspondence from the age of 7 and through their words and the actors’ interpretation we are
drawn into their worlds which challenged them, defined them, and finally defeated
and made them.
Jytte Kvinesdal and Steffen Rode have performed the
play at Odense Teater and on tour throughout
Denmark. They created an intimate performance for
the audience in Brisbane and we thank them for their
great initiative in coming to Australia. Their tour now
continues to Sydney and Melbourne.
Instead of flowers on the opening night, the club
presented Jytte, Steffen and Irmelin (their daughter
and sound technician) with hats as a thank you for
their visit. We hope the hats will survive their travels
and remind them of Brisbane.

Project New Kitchen
The kitchen renovation has nearly completed and we’re looking forward
to showing it off at Café Danmark on Friday 23 May.
As you can see from the photo, we doubled the size of the kitchen by
removing a wall, and after finishing the new part, we continued with
the update of the old part of the kitchen.
The breakfast bar was removed as this was always a bottleneck, and
we also removed the other old cupboards and have replaced with new
and will now also have a dedicated sink for hand wash away from the
kitchen cleaning area.
Prior to the renovation we also had to prepare coffee in the cleaning
area which really wasn’t practical and this will now have its own
dedicated area where the fridges used to be located.
Without the breakfast bar, the kitchen has now been opened up wide,
so we can place the 2 new mobile counters to suit our requirements on
the day, and we look forward to fine tuning the new set up.
The kitchen renovation happened with funding from the Gambling
Community Benefit Fund which distributes proceeds from gambling
through a Government committee. A representative for the
Queensland Government, our local member, Robert Cavallucci, will join
us for Café Danmark to officially hand over the cheque for the
renovation.
The club is of course very grateful for this grant and we look forward to
thanking Queensland Government.
Our kitchen rules!
Kitchen update Nearly there, waiting for delivery and/or installation of final bench
top, taps and electrical outlets. Reported last month that old dishwasher had
suddenly stopped (technician called and $200 later he found that the plug had
dropped out  - at least it’s still going). Sliding drawers from old kitchen
cupboards have been reused in the bar for glasses.
Fascia and awning at the entrance Completed
Membership 1 new membership
Events Looking forward to Skt Hans bonfire with Saga Vikings on Saturday 21
June. Otherwise fairly quiet with few event bookings over winter.
Beer, snaps and licorice Will be testing new supplies of Pingvin Blanding, Poletter
and Toms Bridgeblanding. Soren reports that the Christmas brew is particularly
good this year.
Money The first ten months show a surplus of approx. $18,000.
We can advise on freight Australia wide!

For mere
himmelske agerdyrknings urtebog, ”Pen Tschao”, at lakridsen er en
magisk plante, der genskaber ungdomskraften i aldrende mænd. I dag
Begge startede
Senere i 20’erne kom blød

Sarah also runs workshops especially for kids.
Sarah has a bachelor degree in Textile Design and Garment Construction
(Haandarbejdets Fremme in Copenhagen). Teacher training is an integral part of
this degree. Her area of expertise is garment construction (design, pattern making
and sewing), textile printing and embroidery. Through the years she has worked
in various fields of the fashion industry and theatre world where she has gained
extensive experience. Having a firm technical background has provided her with
the ability to relate experimentally and critically to textile materials; to be
confident with all the tools and tricks of the trade and facilitate
this knowledge for cultural or educational purposes. She has
used these skills for all kinds of adventure; e.g. her own label
in women’s fashion (Hubsch Copenhagen) and accessories
(Minutiae Melbourne), catwalks shows, photo shoots, theatre
productions, sewing high end couture and teaching both
adults and children. Beside this she enjoys yoga and baking
sourdough bread! Being creative and offering this to others in one form or
another is her real passion – Welcome to The Createry!
