CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
Leading with purpose
As the largest and most successful Qatari bank, Qatar
National Bank (QNB) recognizes the need to lead by
example. We are committed to demonstrating how
profitable commercial enterprises can, and must, actively
support the communities they serve.
We believe that successful organizations must always aim
to be the best they can be – and more. If they are to be
effective leaders, they must take their role one step further,
and give generously to the community of people who fuel
their success.
At QNB we do that in many of ways. We actively support
the aspirations of the country’s people – providing financial
support and professional expertise to help achieve their
dreams.
We have carefully assessed our strengths and pledge to
support the Nation in seven strategic pursuits:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Arts and Culture
Economic and International Affairs
Health and Environment
Social and Humanitarian
Sports
Youth and Education
Staff Engagement
Supporting our Staff
I can assure that we have carefully considered how we
can best support the aspirations of the communities and
people we serve. To effectively achieve that goal, QNB
has developed a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
framework that enables it to objectively assess requests
against key priorities, thereby ensuring its contributions
effectively align with pre-defined goals and objectives.

This, Corporate Social Responsibility Report, aims to help
you, our loyal stakeholders, understand and appreciate
how we have, for more than four decades, focused on
ensuring our community and our country meets its full
potential. It also aims to show how we intend, in the future,
to continue to go “Together Forward” fulfilling our social
responsibility commitments to ensure Qatar and its people
fully embrace future challenges and make the world a
better place.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE THAT MATTERS
Main page
QNB, like any successful organization, is focused
on generating profits for its shareholders. However,
in pursuing its business objectives, it is eager to use
its resources and expertise to positively influence the
communities it serves.
The Bank is deeply committed to becoming an
active and valued corporate entity that uses its
influence to make the communities we operate in a
better place to live.
Being a good corporate citizen involves more
than providing financial support to worthy causes.
It includes cultivating an attitude of respect and
care for employees, customers, shareholders and
the people one serves. Empowering individuals,
respecting their personal needs and creating
a healthy, stress-free work environment are all
important elements of QNB’s corporate responsibility
activities.
In this, our first Corporate Social Responsibility
Report, we highlight some of the many activities and
specific causes we have supported in recent years
within each of the six areas we are targeting and
conclude with an overview of the steps we are taking
to ensure the CSR values we uphold are evident in
our daily operations and work environment.
We invite you to join us as we strive to make the
communities we serve, responsive to the needs of
the society. Ordinary actions that come from the
heart generate extraordinary results – and that is
exactly what we seek to achieve through our CSR
commitments.

ARTS AND CULTURE
16
Within Qatar, QNB has aligned its efforts with Qatar
Foundation for Education, Science and Community
Developmant to support cultural pursuits that
celebrate the uniqueness of the country’s Islamic
roots and Arabic heritage. From providing financial
assistance that enables the Foundation to host
enlightening artistic showcases, to evening concerts
that nurture appreciation for classical music, to being
a prominent sponsor of Virginia Commonwealth
University’s annual art exhibition, QNB is helping
elevate appreciation for arts and culture. Highlights
of recent arts and cultural pursuits supported by
QNB include:
Souq Waqif Photo Exhibition in France
QNB was the exclusive sponsor of the Souq Waqif
photo exhibition held in Paris, France in June 2007
under the patronage of Her Excellency Sheikha
Al-Mayassa Bint Hamad Al-Thani, Chairperson of
Qatar’s Museums Authority.
This unique photographic exhibition, organized by
Qatar’s permanent delegation to UNESCO in Paris,
celebrated the traditional architecture of Souq Waqif,
one of Qatar’s most important cultural landmarks,
which mirrors the hospitality and social fabric of the
Qatari people.
6th Annual Doha Cultural Festival
Held in March 2007, this two-week festival promotes
international dialogue and communication among
nations and people. The festival celebrated the art,
folklore and cultural richness of numerous countries,
including China, India, Lebanon, Syria, a variety
of European countries and more and featured an

can truly capitalize on this unique asset and build an
enviable and prosperous country.

By assuming a leadong role in a range of regional
and international symposia focused on banking,
finance and economics, QNB aims to help increase
global understanding of the Middle East and
North Africa (MENA) region’s financial activities
and opportunities. It achieves this objective by
supporting and participating in regional and global
events that focus on sharing knowledge with
members of the financial community at large.
Over the past three years, some of the key highlights
of its activities in this area included:
10th IIF Meeting of Middle East and North
African Bank Chief Executives meeting
(February 2007)
Under the auspices of His Excellency Yousef
Hussain Kamal, Minister of Finance and Chairman
of QNB, QNB played host to finance leaders
from across the Middle East and North Africa
in an important meeting held to discuss issues,
opportunities and challenges for the region’s banks
and financial institutions. Organized by QNB and the
Institute of International Finance, the exchange of
views at this meeting imbued a sense of confidence
in the role of financial services firms, official
institutions and regulatory authorities, in working
together to forge a modern financial architecture in
the region.
Second Annual World Islamic Infrastructure
Finance Conference (November 2007)
As sole sponsor of the Strategic Shari’a Open
Forum at the 2nd Annual World Islamic Infrastructure
Finance Forum, held in Doha in November
2007, QNB Al Islami clearly demonstrated its
commitment to actively implement its corporate
social responsibility doctrine. The participation of the
Deputy Chairman of QNB Al Islami’s Shari’a Board
added an important and valuable dimension to the
program’s discussions and deliberations.

QNB believes a healthy population is a happy
population and the cornerstone of its success. In
collaboration with Hamad Medical Corporation, the
governing body on national health care, QNB has
sponsored several medical conferences.
Conference of Comprehensive and Integrated
Care for Diabetes (April 2007)
QNB sponsored this conference held in Doha in April
2007, which was organized by the Qatar Diabetes
Association. The incidence of diabetes in the GCC
region is relatively high as compared to other regions
and the conference featured international experts
and medical specialists who can help diabetics
understand their illness and play a productive role in
the community despite it.
Conference of the Arab Federation for the
Visually Impaired (August 2007)
QNB was a sponsor of this event, which was held
in Doha in August 2007. Representatives from 20
Arab countries participated, as well as various Qatarbased social organizations and a representative of
the Arab League. The event sought to develop the
parameters and identify Doha as the headquarter
of the first-ever Arab Federation for the Visually
Impaired.

Conference (November 2007)
QNB was the platinum sponsor of this four-day
event organized by the Hamad Medical Corporation
and held in Doha in November 2007. The
conference attracted the participation of numerous
local and international experts from around the world
who deliberated on the best screening techniques
for newborns to help support healthy, safe deliveries.
QNB Cyclofun
During May 2006, QNB organized QNB Cyclofun,
a community leisure event that promoted healthy,
active living. A 4-km span of the Corniche Road
was cordoned off to motor vehicles and reserved
for the use of families and individuals keen to cycle,
skateboard, roller-blade or walk. QNB donated
more than 140 bicycles of various sizes for use by
participating families. QNB’s Executive Managment
along with employees of the bank demonstrated the
bank’s support for this event by participating in the
event’s activities.

QNB also recognizes that a healthy environment
supports healthy living. Consequently, it encourages
its employees to be environmentally conscious in
their daily activities and it enthusiastically employs
a ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ approach to its own
activities.
A Flower for Each Spring
For eight consecutive years, QNB has been a
proud sponsor of the annual Flower for Each Spring
program organized by The Friends of Environment
Center. The program includes a range of fairs and
exhibitions promoting environment-friendly practices
and a series of field trips that introduce youngsters
to Qatar’s flora and fauna in its natural habitat.
Did you know?
• QNB is an active supporter of the Ministry of
Interior’s Traffic Week campaign and its road
accident prevention activities and encourages
staff to obey the rules of the road to ensure long,
healthy and productive lives.
• QNB is supporting the efforts of Friends of the
Environment Center to index and categorize
Qatar’s entomological fauna. It is estimated
that only one-tenth of Qatar’s flora, fauna and
insects have been indexed prior to this activity.
The project will include photographing the
full collection of specimens to form part of a
comprehensive atlas that will document the rich
variety of insects, flora and fauna indigenous to
Qatar.

SOCIAL AND HUMANITARIAN
30
Some believe that the measure of one’s true worth
can be found through an examination of their
attitudes towards those who are less fortunate. At
QNB we are inclined to agree.
The harsh realities of the desert climate required
our ancestors to care for each other in the struggle
to survive. United in camaraderie, our forefathers
conquered a harsh and difficult terrain. We continue
to follow that tradition as we forge ahead into new
territories that challenge us to unite as a nation
to meet success. Together Forward we march,
upholding the values of caring for those who cannot
care for themselves.
Much of our support to social and humanitarian
causes is directed through Qatar Foundation for
Education, Science and Community Development,
the government agency that we align closely with to
meet the needs of the less fortunate in our society,
and elsewhere.
Reach Out to Asia (ROTA) Campaign
In December 2006 QNB donated a portion of the
proceeds it reaped through the QNB Asian Games
commemorative credit card to support survivors of
the tragic earthquake that devastated communities
throughout the Indian subcontinent. Each time a
QNB patron used the card, 0.5 % of the purchase
value was donated to the Reach Out to Asia (ROTA)
campaign.

QNB Volunteer Award
In collaboration with Qatar Foundation’s Social
Development Centre, a non-profit organization
dedicated to helping those in need, the Bank
launched the QNB Volunteer Award. The award
itself was instituted as social commitment to those
organizations and individuals in various sectors who
undertake volunteering activity and celebrate their
efforts. The program, which includes an annual gala
charity dinner, during which community volunteers
are publicly recognized and acknowledged for
their generous spirit, aims to promote the value of
volunteer efforts their humanitarian contributions and
encourage corporations, institutions and individuals
of all ages to give generously of their skills, time and
resources to help those in need.
The First Step Program
The Social Development Centre’s First Step Program
helps Qatari women prepare to become active
participants in the workforce. If offers an array of
rehabilitation and orientation activities and relevant
training to support the development of effective
job skills, including sound interpersonal relations
and solid English and Arabic language skills. We
considered it pertinent to support a programme that
aims at promoting enterprise development among
Qatari women who will contribute to the national
goal of providing employment opportunities to
Qataris in the private sector and also will lead to the
effective economic and social participation of Qatari
nationals in the development of their nation.
“We at the Social Development Centre aim to
make a positive difference in our communities.
QNB’s ongoing support enables us to lend a
helping hand through development programs that
are giving people hope and confidence.

School Bags For Qatar Charity
QNB contributed 1000 school bags to Qatar
Charity for destitute children to be used in the 2008
academic year. Educational programs rank high
among the activities of Qatar Charity since acquiring
knowledge, according to Islam, is a duty for every
Muslim. As a result, Qatar Charity sponsors needy
students so that they can complete their education.
Close to a 1000 students benefit from this program.
QNB works closely with Qatar Charity to ensure they
may continue the noble work they have undertaken.
Art that Gives
QNB organized a two-day children’s painting
extravaganza at the Doha City Centre during Eid in
2007. The Bank then purchased each completed
painting. The funds collected were shared among
five local charities: Qatar Diabetes Association,
Qatar National Cancer Society, Qatar Society for
Special Needs, Qatar Society for Orphans and the

nurtures the development of young athletes through
support of national bodies that represent various
sporting interests. In addition, the Bank routinely
supports local championships and competitions for
community sporting events.
SPORTS

Traditional Sports
QNB is proud to help ensure Qatar’s traditional

the country and its people to move forward with
confidence. In this domain, QNB has provided
exclusive sponsorships of horse racing and camel
racing championships. Through its support of
traditional sports, QNB is helping to simultaneously
preserve and herald the Bedouin culture, which
Qatar and its people are deeply rooted within.

QNB directs a significant amount of support to
youth and education. From scholarship support
to The Learning Center School, a non-profit
educational institution devoted to offering services
to academically challenged students, to prestige
sponsorship of Virginia Commonwealth University’s
annual Tasmeem Design Conference since 2004 and
similar educational support, the Bank is committed
to encouraging Qatar’s youth to be the best they can
be.
Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar
(VCUQ) Scholarships
Since 2003, QNB has inspired academic excellence
among students studying Interior Design and
Graphic Design at Virginia Commonwealth University
Qatar’s School of the Arts. QNB is helping to remove
potential barriers to academic success by offering
scholarship recipients an opportunity to pursue their
studies. Many of QNB sponsored students at VCUQ
are currently employed at some of Qatar’s most
recognized institutions.
Inspiring Creativity in Youth
In 2007, QNB extended its support to enable Carol
Henderson, faculty member of the US-based North
Carolina Writers’ Network and consultant to conduct
writing workshops with talented young writers and
thinkers at Qatar University in Doha.
Encouraging Youth Sport Participation
In March 2006, QNB sponsored the Children’s
Taekwondo Championship, which attracted teams
from Qatar Foundation’s The Learning Center School
and the Falcon Taekwondo Academy. All participants
received a QNB medal for partaking in the event,
and winners were awarded a Young Investor

Promoting Careers in the Financial Sector
In December 2007, QNB participated in the Qatar
Career Day, which was held under the patronage of
H.H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani. Considered a
major milestone in the history of educational events in
Doha, this event witnessed remarkable presence in the
wing dedicated for Qatari banks, where important QNB
officials offered guidance and answered all the inquiries
of those who wish to pursue a career in the bank.
In the same vein, the bank hosted a QNB Career
Day to inspire Qatari youth to choose a career in the
banking and finance sector. The Bank continuously
demonstrates at various community events how
working in this sector contributes positively to the
growth of Qatar’s economy and the professional and
personal growth of individuals.
Supporting Qatar University
In November 2007 QNB announced it would provide
QR1.8 million in funding to Qatar University to enable
it to meet its mission. The funds will help the University
develop educational curriculum to attract students
interested in pursuing banking careers and finance the
renovation of Ibn Khaldoun Hall, the University’s main
lecture hall. QNB is also working in close alliance with
Qatar University to encourage Qatari youth to consider
a career in the banking and finance sector through a
scholarship program and similar incentives.
“Qatar National Bank has been a generous supporter
of VCU Qatar since it established its presence in
Doha. They were one of the first companies to
recognize the excellence of our graduates and
the quality of our programs. We are honored by
their participation and look forward to a mutually
beneficial partnership”
- Christina Lindholm, Dean of Virginia Commonwealth
University Qatar (VCUQ) - Academic Year 2006 - 2007

Encouraging QNB staff to support the communities in
which they live is an integral part of QNB’s Corporate
Social Responsibility strategy. Whether it is by
providing opportunities for employees to volunteer their
efforts to support community events or encouraging
them to donate to officially sanctioned charities, QNB
believes it is important that its team is part of the
solution.

STAFF ENGAGEMENT
Below are examples of the activities we support and
encourage our staff to get involved in – for their own
good, and the good of the community.
15th Asian Games Doha
In December 2006, more than 150 QNB employees
volunteered time and energy to staff QNB’s hospitality
suite located at Sport City, Sponsor Hospitality Village
on the Corniche and at the Qatar Sports Club. The
Hospitality Suite and Kiosks extended a warm Arabian
welcome to international media, spectators and visitors
to Doha during the Asian Games extravaganza.
QNB Football and Cricket Teams
QNB integrated its support for sports in its Staff
Engagement program by the formation of a football
team and a cricket team that participated in various
leagues in Doha, such as the first Companies and
Institutions Indoor Football League. Both teams
comprise of players from various departments of the
bank.
Qatar Clean & Green Campaign
In collaboration with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs
& Agriculture (MMAA), QNB employees actively
participated in the seventh annual “Qatar Clean &
Green” campaign. The campaign features a range of
activities that promote a clean, green nation, including
beach cleaning, tree-planting and the distribution of
information encouraging citizens to ‘live green’ and
keep Doha clean and free of litter.
In May 2007, QNB was honored during a special
ceremony for its contributions to this national
campaign which continues to expand.

SUPPORTING OUR STAFF

Our employees are our most important assets and we
value and respect their contributions to our success.
By implementing a proactive human resource strategy
that is grounded in international best practices, QNB
fosters a healthy work environment that enables it to
attract and retain talented and qualified employees.
We promote teamwork and an open-door
management policy that encourages two-way
communication among employees and management
and we celebrate the successes of our staff at an
annual Staff Dinner at which we honor individuals and
teams for their exemplary achievements, dedication
and commitment through our Staff Appreciation and
Recognition (STAR) Program.
QNB also offers Individual Career Development
support to all employees, promoting lifelong learning
and offering advice and guidance on how to acquire
valuable leadership skills that will enable them to
reach their full potential. The Bank’s Qatari Top Talent
program focuses on grooming dedicated Qataris
for senior management roles in the QNB Group.
Furthermore, an extensive electronic self-managed
learning program will soon be implemented; offering
more than 30 programs a month and complements
the Bank’s new Learning Resource Center which is
expected to open in the first quarter of 2008.
The Bank employs international recruiting support and
human resource services to address its employees’
needs and a Center of Excellence to focus on learning
objectives and appropriate compensation and benefits.
These efforts ensure the QNB Group will remain a
valued and sought after employer now and well into
the future.
