FOUNDERS AND OWNERS OF DESIGN AGENCY
SOURCE, TREVYN AND JULIAN MCGOWAN, SHARE
THEIR FAVOURITES WITH US
Trevyn and Julian McGowan are the founders and driving forces behind
Source, a design agency representing the best South African design
talent, showcasing them around the world. With an acute sense of style
and an uncanny ability to pick up on the latest trends, this pioneering
couple gives us an inside look at what gets their hearts racing.
The one indulgence I’ll never forego is Trevyn McGowan: really good
wine. We have such incredible wine in this country that to drink
anything less than fantastic just doesn’t make sense. I especially like the
Badenhorst Family Wines from the Swartland region. The grooming
staples I am never without are TM: Shiseido pressed powder, Bobbi
Brown lipstick and a Mason Pearson hairbrush. Julian McGowan: Fresh
Sake Hair Cream. Without it my hair looks like a hat. My all-time
favourite gadget is TM: my 17-inch MacBook. Sad to say, it is always
within a hand’s reach. JM: My Panasonic PT-AE4000 HD projector. The
single object I would never part with is TM: my Gregor Jenkin
industrial diamond wedding ring. My favourite drinks are JM: Amstel
and coffee (this is a tie, not a mixer). The restaurant I frequent most
often is TM: Ocean Basket. I live near George and have five children.
Your personal style signifier? TM: My Cydwoq shoes — handmade
heels from California. JM: My boots from n.d.c made by hand. The last
thing you bought and loved? TM: Conrad Botes and Paco Pakdoust’s
Haunted rug for Southern Guild. JM: A four-metre Gregor Jenkin dining
table. Your favourite timepiece? TM: My TAG Heuer that I have had
since 1996 and have never felt the need to replace. JM: My engraved
Rolex Datejust. It was a gift from Trevyn. An unforgettable place
you’ve travelled to in the past year? TM: Design Miami, to exhibit
Southern Guild with Gregor Jenkin. It is an incredibly beautiful city with
a huge amount of culture, alongside the better known glamorous side.
JM: We had a fantastic family holiday in Swaziland last year. The book
on your bedside table? TM: My notebook, Captain Underpants, Mr
Gum, and A visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan (Pulitzer 2011), of
which I get to read half a page at a time. JM: Blink by Malcolm Gladwell.
I love all his books The last meal that truly impressed you? TM: I have
just been to Dubai for the first time and had a truly fantastic lobster meal
with a French Chablis in a cosy booth in one of the earlier grand hotels,
Awtar at the Grand Hyatt (www.dubai.g rand.hyatt.com). JM: Reuben Riffel
cooking for 300 people at the Rand Club for the Southern Guild Design
Foundation last year. The thing you are eyeing next? TM: A Tiaan
Nagel dress for my next opening, a Kerry Evans portrait, and about that
watch... JM: A black PVD Bamford Rolex — I suspect I will be eyeing it
for ever (www.bamfordwatchdepartment.com). The one thing you will
always find in your fridge? TM: A lot of milk, dozens of jars of pickles,
spices and pastes that somehow only get opened once, and a steady
flow of leftovers. The best gift you’ve received recently? TM: A new
pair of drop earrings by Marchand van Tonder, to replace the ones that
had been stolen, as I got dressed for a special event. JM: A bronze zebra
by and from Otto Du Plessis. And the best one you’ve given? TM: A
LEGO Mindstorm NXT 2.0 — I don’t think I have ever witnessed such
unadulterated joy. JM: Those earrings. The place that inspires you and
why? TM: The beach in the early morning. It is the only 45 minutes
when I am on my own in an otherwise crazily busy day. JM: Our farm in
the Klein Karoo. No computers, no cellphone, no TV, just family time. A
recent special find? TM: East Head Café, at the heads in Knysna
(044 384 0933). The last item you added to your wardrobe? TM: Two
Superella dresses — I couldn’t choose between them. Favourite city
and why? TM: New York. My husband and I fell in love there, and feel
like we are that age again whenever we go back. It is everything a city
should be: intelligent, cultural, glamorous and exhilarating. JM: It’s the
ultimate city, all others pretend.
