Gather (5 minutes)
Center Time
You may choose to set up one or both of these creative play centers where kids can
play as they arrive in your classroom. Have helpers in each center to help children
with the activities. Kids can stay in one center or travel to more than one.
Building
Set Up: Set the blocks on a flat surface where the kids can build.
Encourage the kids to work together to build big structures. As the weeks go on,
you could introduce different kinds of building blocks: interlocking, sponge, large
cardboard, logs. There are many kinds of building toys that will intrigue kids.

Circle Time.
When all kids have arrived and have had time to participate in at least one center,
say to the kids, Since we are talking about animals, when I make an animal
sound, we will know that it is time for everyone to help clean up and get ready
for Circle Time. Bark or moo or quack where everyone can hear you.
Circle Time
We’re going to say a rainbow welcome. I am going to call out a color. If you are
wearing that color, pop up and we’ll all say, “Welcome, [Name]. We’re glad
that you are here and wearing red!” Continue to call out colors until everyone is
standing. Look at us! We are wearing all the colors of the rainbow!
Set the tools in front of you. I have brought some things to show you today. Pick
up one of the tools. Who knows what this is? What do we do with this? Let the
kids answer. Continue to show the tools. Pass them around. Some of these tools
are heavy, aren’t they? What do we do with all these things? We build and fix
things, don’t we? The man in our story today is going to build something, too.

Noah’s Ark Storytelling
Give each kid two blocks. When we talk about building the boat, I want you to
pound your blocks together three times to make a pounding noise just like Noah
makes when he builds the ark. God tells Noah that a flood is coming. God is not
happy with people. God tells Noah to build a boat. Clap your blocks.

God tells Noah to build a big boat called an ark. Clap your blocks.
God tells him to build a really big boat! Clap your blocks.
God tells him to build it out of wood. Clap your blocks.
God tells Noah to build it strong to keep the water out. Clap your blocks.
God tells Noah that it should have rooms for all the animals. Clap your blocks.
God tells Noah to build a few rooms for his family. Clap your blocks.
God tells Noah to bring animals and food for a long time.
Let’s read about Noah and the storm in our Spark Story Bible to find out what
else happens. Let’s put our blocks in the basket so we can settle down and listen
to the story.
Take out your Spark Story Bible and open to Noah’s Ark on pages 20-25. Read
the story out loud and point to the corresponding pictures. Look for Squiggles the
caterpillar in each picture. Ask kids what they think Squiggles is feeling or doing.
Encourage them to make a face or move like Squiggles.
Ask the following questions, allowing time for kids to answer:
What did God tell Noah to do? (God gave Noah instructions for building a boat.)
Have you ever helped to build something? Was it quiet or noisy to build it?

Fly or Crawl
Line the kids up. Stand across the room from them. Play a game like Red Light,
Green Light. I am going to call out the name of an animal, and then turn around.
When you hear what animal it is, you are going to walk or fly the way that animal
does, to try to get to me. If I turn back around and see you moving, I’ll send you
back to the beginning. The first kid who sneaks up to me will get to stand here
and choose the animals.

Wood Sculpture
Set Up: Raid your tool box for spare nuts, bolts, washers, large nails, and small bits
of wood. If you don’t have them to spare, go to a local hardware store or building
supply store. Little hardware pieces are inexpensive.
Spark Resources
Lay out all the stuff. Give each kid a paper plate and a small piece of wood for a
base. Help them write their names on the plates. Make sure everyone can reach
some glue. We are going to build today. Look at all the things we can use to make
a building sculpture. You can make anything you want. God gave Noah lots of
directions on how to build the ark. I am not going to give you ANY directions.
Just use your imaginations and have fun and share the stuff, so everyone gets
enough to make a good sculpture. Give the kids time to glue and tape their
sculptures together.

Pass each kid half an apple on a plate. Put a little blob of cream cheese in the cored
part of the apple. Stick the pretzel stick in the cream cheese. Fold the cheese slice
so it sticks around the pretzel to make a sail. You might have to poke the cheese
with the pretzel to make it stick. Let’s enjoy eating our boat snacks. I wonder if
our apple boats would float. Pour a cup of water for each kid, too.

I’m thinking of an animal with spots and four legs that eats the leaves off the
tops of trees because it has such a long, long neck. Who can tell me which
animal I was thinking of? A giraffe. Wow, you are good!
Continue to make up animal riddles as long as the kids are interested. See if the

Everybody spread out a little bit. When I say an animal, I want you to walk,
gallop, swim, crawl, or fly like that animal. There are so many animals. I wonder
where we should start. How about being a horse? How does a horse move? They
gallop, don’t they? Gallop a little while.
Now be a lizard. How does a lizard move? They scamper on four feet. Be a lizard!
Be a seagull. How do seagulls move? They fly, don’t they? Fly like beautiful
seagulls over the ocean.

Have the kids stand in a circle so they can all grab on to the bedsheet. Put the
beach ball in the middle. We are going to make a storm today. Let’s pretend that
the beach ball is the ark. Everybody hold onto the bedsheet storm maker. First
our storm starts out kind of slowly. Wave the storm maker slowly like the first
little drops of rain falling and the tiny wind blowing. Now the rain falls a little
harder and the wind blows a little stronger. Let’s wave a little stronger. It is hard
to keep the beach ball on there isn’t it? Go get the beach ball if it falls off.

Now, let’s make it a really big, wavy storm. The ark is rocking all over the place.
It must be really rough in there! How long can we keep the ark on the sheet?
I think it is time for the storm to die down. The waves are getting smaller and
smaller. The wind is blowing slowly, slowly. The beach ball ark comes slowly to a
stop and all the people and animals inside are glad to be at rest.

instruments quietly.
They hear the rain. Pitter patter. Then it gets louder and louder. Play your
instruments louder!
The thunder roars. The lightning strikes. The storm rages on and on. The rain
pours down. It is so loud that the animals can hardly sleep. Play really loudly
now!
Noah and his family are very busy taking care of all the animals. But they still
hear the thunder and lightning. They still hear the storm. Stop!

Give each kid a coffee filter and some markers. Help them write their name on
the filter in pen in a small area. Let’s think about the rain falling on Noah and
the animals as we color on our coffee filters. There was water everywhere.
They could only see water when they looked outside. They could not see any
land. Color your coffee filter everywhere, just like the rain and water that were
everywhere for Noah and the animals. Now we are going to add even more
water. We’ll take turns spraying a little water on our coffee filters to see if they
don’t look even stormier! Remember, they only need one or two squirts! (More
than two or three squirts may make them too wet to dry in time.) Set the drippy
projects somewhere safe to dry. If you flip them, they will dry quicker so kids can
take them home.

Noah’s Ark
Week 6
(Genesis 6—9)
Gather (5 minutes)
Center Time
You may choose to set up one or both of these creative play centers where kids can
play as they arrive in your classroom. Have helpers in each center to help children
with the activities. Kids can stay in one center or travel to more than one.
It’s a Zoo!
Set Up: Lay out the animal print fabric or bedsheets. Set the animals, books and
puzzles on the fabric where the kids can play with them. You can use stuffed,
plastic, or any kind of animals.
Let the kids enjoy playing with the animals you brought. They will make up their
own games. Have fun watching them enjoy walking, talking, and interacting like the
animals. Encourage kids to work together on puzzles and games.
Coloring Center
Provide copies of Coloring Page Noah’s Ark F, blank paper, and markers or crayons
for each kid. Be sure to write their names on their drawings before they move to
Circle Time.

Scout your room to make sure that you have lots of colors for the kids to find. Have
some crayons in your pocket just in case.
God sent Noah a rainbow. That rainbow has all the colors in it. I think we can
find all those colors in our room today. Let’s start with red. Everybody stand up
and let’s go put our hand on something red. We’ll wait until everyone has a hand
on something red. It is okay to share your red thing with someone else. Two or
three people can touch the same red thing.

Now let’s try to find something orange. Wait while the kids find something
orange. Continue to find things that are yellow, green, blue, and purple.
We have found things that are every color. We have found a rainbow. We’ll be
talking about rainbows all day today.
Prayer Time
Let’s pray like animals. Everyone choose an animal and make the sound their
animal makes. Has everyone thought of an animal? Help kids who can’t think of
one. Let’s practice our animal sounds. Let the kids practice. When we get to the
end of the prayer, let’s say amen like animals.

Noah’s Ark Storytelling
Give each kid a streamer. These are our rainbow promise wavers. They remind us
that God makes promises to us. Let’s wave our rainbows when we talk about the
promises.
Spark Resources
One day, God talks to Noah. God tells Noah to build an ark. God promises to
take care of Noah and his family if Noah will obey and build a big ark. Wave
your streamer. God promises that they will be safe. Wave your streamer. God
tells Noah to put two of each kind on animal on the ark. God promises that the
animals will be safe on the ark. Wave your streamer. God says that a storm will
come but promises that the ark will not tip over or sink. Wave your streamer.

Spark Story Bible
Supplies
God says that the storm will last for a long time. But God promises that the
storm will not last forever. Wave your streamer. The storm lasts as long as God
says. Then the storm stops. But there is still so much water that Noah cannot
get off the ark. God promises that the water will go away. But it will take a while.
Wave your streamer. The water does go away just like God says. God keeps
promises. Wave your streamer. God sends a rainbow to remind Noah that there
will never be another flood like this one. Wave your streamer. God sends the
rainbow to remind us that God keeps all promises. Wave your streamer.

What did God promise? (Answers will vary depending on which promise kids choose
to mention.)
Have you ever seen a rainbow? How big was it?

Fingerprint Rainbows
Set Up: Draw an arch on the white paper. Draw smaller arches making a rainbow.
Make a photocopy for each kid. Wet the paper towels so you are ready to clean
fingers.
Spark Resources
Give each kid a white paper rainbow and help them write their names on their
papers. Make sure everyone can reach an ink pad and a wet paper towel. To save
time you may want to use just a few colors in your rainbow. Sometimes you can get
ink pads with more than one color. God promises to love and care for us forever.
God sent a rainbow to Noah to remind us that there will never be another flood
like the one that Noah and the animals experienced. We’re making rainbows so
we remember God’s promise, too. Show the kids how to put their fingers in the ink
pad and then on the paper. Make sure they clean fingers before they change colors
and at the end of the project.

Set Up: Wash and prepare the fruit and put it in the large bowl.
Supplies
Have the kids take turns stirring the fruit salad. We’re having rainbow fruit salad
today. Why did God send the rainbow? (to remind us of God’s promise never to flood
the world again) I can see every color in the rainbow in our fruit salad. Which fruit
is yellow? Which one is red? Which fruit is your favorite color? Which fruit is
your favorite taste? Now that the fruit salad is all mixed, let’s eat it all up!

Good-bye Time
Build a tower with the blocks. It’s almost time to say good-bye. Before we go,
let’s take down this tower. Each of us can take down one block and put it in the
basket. Let’s all share something we talked about today as we put our blocks in
the basket. For variation, you could share a favorite animal on the ark, something
from home you would bring if you went on the ark, something you would miss
doing while you were stuck on the ark, or a favorite color in the rainbow.

Dear God,
Thank you for being like a very big umbrella. Thanks for keeping us safe.
Amen.
