The NJHS helped Mrs. Fraley and Mrs. Gore plan and set up the carnival. There were games, face painting, inflatables, cotton candy, candy apples, cake walk, and many other activities. The carnival was a reward for getting school of excellence. We asked two students per grade. We asked Ryan Jenkins and Cheyenna Sword from 6th grade if they both enjoyed it. Ryan liked the cake walk. Cheyenna liked the Basketball shoot. In 7th grade we interviewed Taylor Hall and Austin Riddle. They both enjoyed it, and both liked the basketball shoot. We interviewed Makayla Schwab and Rose Kidd. Makayla and Rose said they enjoyed their time at the carnival. We hope we can excel in our performance for next year. VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PAGE 3 IT’S ALL GREEK TO ME! While in ancient Greece, 7th grade students have learned about Greek mythology, which included the myth of Medusa, as can be seen by their masks here, as well as, performing the play of King Midas and the Golden Touch, and learning some of the differences between versions of Hercules. Also, in ancient Greece, vases were used for everything. There were big ones, small ones, and “gianormous” ones! They were usually red and black in color and had pictures depicting items from their daily life. These vases are called amphoras and each student produced one that represented what they like to do. One day in class, we had a couple of very special guest speakers, all the way from ancient Greece: Alexander the Great and the ex-king of Persia, Darius. Occasionally we had the honor of witnessing Alexander granting one final interview, before his death, in 323 BC. As all ancient Greeks know, the main event in any Greek’s life would be participating in the Winter Olympics. The torch runner this year was Gavin Jenkins, to get our Olympic games started. Events included puzzle solving, stress apple basketball, rubber band shooting, and cotton ball catapulting. First and second place winners received a gold or silver medal for their efforts. At the closing ceremonies of the Olympics, the citizens of Ath- RHMS ROCKS JR GARDEN CLUB The Rock Hill Middle School Rocks Jr Garden Club won the Autumn Harvest regional contest, earning a blue ribbon in Ohio’s Region 10, which includes, Pike, Adams, Scioto, and Lawrence counties. The award qualifies RHMS—MD units for the State Junior Garden Club Beautification Award. The regional director, Sue Thomas visited the students during the last garden club meeting and has nominated the Rocks Junior Garden Club for Outstanding Jr. Garden Club of the year award. The flower display theme was “Think Pink” in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. ens, Sparta, Ephesus, Troy, Corinth, and Olympia were served by their slaves, at a Greek feast of bread, grapes, olives, fig newtons, dates, and grape juice. After Christmas break, students will be getting their passports ready, to travel back to ancient Rome, where we will learn that “all roads lead to Rome.” You can check out our progress at the Rock Hill website, for the Middle School, under Academics, and Mrs. Stevens’ website. Pictures are taken and posted regularly, there. It was in front of the whole Middle School and consisted of four Christmas songs. They performed at the Elementary School on December 18, 2012. The seventh and eighth graders that partici- pated worked extremely hard to make sure their audiences enjoyed the music. They thoroughly love performing in front of people to show people what they can do, as well as showing people their talents in playing music. We were assessed after reading ten chapter sets and compared the movie and book by writing an essay. PAGE 7 TOMAHAWK TIMES PAGE 8 NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY On November 9, 2012 Rock Hill Middle School held the “Carnival of Excellence” for the second year in a row. The NJHS members helped work the booths that were set up along with Mrs. Fraley, Mrs. Gore, and many others. The carnival wouldn’t have occurred if it weren’t for the help from the adults, staff, members, etc. Thank you for your help and support of our academics. The carnival was a success. The students had a great experience because of the variety of booths there. On Sunday, November 18, 2012 the NJHS along with the NHS did a “Rake and Run.” The purpose of the “Rake and Run” was to find people who wanted work done on their homes/yards and once those people were found, the NJHS and NHS went and raked leaves in their yards and pulled unwanted weeds. It was a great and humble experience for the members. Be- cause of the help from the NJHS members, Mrs. Fraley, and Mrs. Gore, in the “Carnival of Excellence,” they were rewarded with a field trip. They went to Giovanni’s and the Lawrence County Museum. The Lawrence County Museum recently put in a “Time Capsule.” The Time Capsule is going to be opened in twenty-five years, and someone is going to read everything that was put into it. They are allowing people to donate things to put in the capsule. Therefore, the NJHS wanted to donate a few items due to the field trip they had. They put in the “Tomahawk Times” that was released earlier this school year. In addition, they donated our “Student Handbook,” a Rock Hill Redman pennant, and a “scroll” that had the NJHS members’ names and how they thought the world was going to change in twenty-five years. I guess we’re going to see if the members were right in twenty-five years when their thoughts are read. The NJHS also held a bake sale to raise money for the Lawrence County Museum. The NJHS had a peanut butter drive with the NHS at the high school that started November 8, 2012. This drive was to help local food pantries obtain a staple/needed item. To get more peanut butter than that of the NJHS and the NHS, the Middle School decided to have a contest between all of the homerooms. The homeroom that earned the most jars of peanut butter from the students received a pizza party. The contest and requirement of the NJHS members was very effective. There were about 402 jars of peanut butter from the drive. The NJHS thanks you for all of the peanut butter that was turned in. Mr. Kidd’s homeroom won the contest. The NHS at the high school started a “Clothing Closet” to help students, kids, and/or families in the school district. To contribute in some way, the NJHS members were to bring in an article of clothing to donate. They also used their money to buy some necessities for the “Clothing Closet.” After the tragic event in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14, 2012, the NJHS felt it would be appropriate to make a pledge. The pledge would hopefully act as a remembrance for the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary. They were to do an act of kindness. Once their deeds were done, the members were to tie a white ribbon into a bow and place it in a basket. Because there are 26 members in the NJHS and that’s the number of victims in the shooting, it seemed like the right thing to do. It was not just for the members but also for the Rock Hill Middle School as a whole. The victims will not be forgotten. Earlier in the year, there was an Ohio State raffle hosted by the NJHS. The raffle was to raise money for a foundation called, “The Shriners.” All the proceeds were given to the foundation. The NJHS donated $264.00 to each hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio and Lexington, Kentucky. VOLUME 5, ISSUE 2 PAGE 9 SCIENCE FAIR It is science fair time again. Students in grades 6-8 will be working on science fair projects or research papers. The 8th grade students are not required to do science fair but if they do not, they have to do a research project. Students will work on their projects on their own. If students need help they can see Mr. Scythes before homeroom, during lunch or enrichment, and after school. All 7th grade students are required to complete a science fair project following the scientific method. If they set up at science fair they will receive 25 bonus points. They began working on their projects in early November and will be working on parts in class and at home as well. They are expected to have the experiment on parts of the projects done by the time they return from Christmas break in January. The complete projects will be due by January 16. All 6th grade students are required to do a project but the science fair is optional. Students will have to do their experiment at home but they will do the typing of their papers at school unless they need more time. If students need help they can see Mr. Sark during his planning 1st block or during lunch. 7TH GRADE SCIENCE Halloween brings the perfect time to explore dry ice and its properties. Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide. It is the gas that we exhale during breathing and the gas that plants use in photosynthesis. Through demonstrations and hands on activities, students watched as the solid changed directly to a gas (sublimation) without going through the liquid stage. The solid just seems to disappear when left laying on the table. We also found that dry ice, water, and dishwashing liquid can make some interesting bubbles that vanish into a puff of smoke when busted. An important safety lesson learned was that dry ice is 109 degrees Fahrenheit below zero and must be handled with gloves and never your bare hands. Students will set up for Science Fair on Tuesday, January 29, 2013. The science fair will be Wednesday, January 30, 2013. If we are out for snow, the science fair will be the next day we are back in school. The projects will be judged that morning and the awards will be announced at the assembly that day at 2:00 pm. For those students who qualify to complete at county science fair, forms must be filled out on January 30 to be submitted to the county board office. The Lawrence county Science fair will be Thursday, February 7, 2013 at South Point Middle School. RHMS QUIZ BOWL TEAM RHMS students who qualified for the 2012-2013 middle school quiz bowl team participated in the academic competition involving weekly matches with other Lawrence County middle schools (including Ironton City Schools and Ironton – St. Joseph Catholic Schools.)
