WHAT
TO SPEAK
By Anjuli Zimmermann
You might not know this but we still the alphabet that
the ancient Romans used. The language that was most
common in Rome was Latin. Many of our English
words come from Latin. Even the U.S dime has Latin on
it. If you turn the dime around the words E pluribus
unum is on it. In English it means “out of many, one.”
Several modern European languages used Latin as a
building block as well. Other English words come from
Latin for example the word manual developed from
manus, the Latin word for “hand”. And the Latin word
for animal is anima meaning life, breath, soul. Our
calendar is also influenced by the one made by Julius
Caesar. The names of a few month come from Latin.
The month September comes from the Latin words
meaning “the seventh month”. The first month in the
Roman calendar is March making October “the eighth
month” in Latin. Romans wrote in all capitals letters.
The Latin inscription on the right is on the Arch of
Constantine is the arch to the emperor for the Senate
and the people of Rome. We see a lot of Latin in
English and other languages today.
LATIN
LANGUAGE
By Anjuli Zimmermann
Latin is the main language in Rome. All though
it is not used every much today the romans
relied on the language to communicate with
one another. Latin is the language originally
spoken by the ancient romans, many words
from the modern languages are based on. When
you are in Roman you should speak Latin
because otherwise you will have no way to
communicate the Romans around you. There
are different types of latin. There is Vulgar
Latin which was mostly spoken on the streets
of Rome by the common people. The other type
of Latin is called church latin which was
spoken by the catholic church. It is also a great
skill to have when you are learning other
languages such as English, Spanish, and
French. If you were to go to Rome the Latin
you should speak is the Vulgar Latin because it
is the most common for the people in Rome.
ROMAN
GOVERNMENT
TODAY By Anjuli Zimmermann
Because of the Legacy of Rome there
are many models of the senate, the
republic and counsels today. The United
States of America's form of government
is a republic just like the Romans once
had. After the republic had ended, Julius
Caesar made Rome into a Dictatorship
and was the first dictator. Many
countries now are dictatorships just like
Rome used to be. After Julius Caesar
was killed his nephew, Caesar Augustus
became the first Emperor of Rome and
made Rome an empire. The Romans
influenced many forms of government
that we see today such as the republic,
dictators, and empires.
ROMAN
FORUM By Anjuli Zimmermann
The Roman forum is the center of Roman
public life. Elections, speeches, criminal
trials, and trades were held there. The
Roman forum is where the senate met
and where trades and business was lead.
There was a forum in every Roman city
but the one in Rome was the main forum.
When the Roman Empire fell, the Roman
Forum became abandoned, and so were
many of the monuments and buildings
used in other areas of the city. The
Romans used the forum for about 1400
years from around 800 BC to 600 AD.
Julius Caesar and Caesar Augustus both
had their own forums, but there were still
many more forums too.
ARCHS,
AQUEDUCTS,
AND DOMES
By Amber Nguyen
Roman architecture has been influenced
mostly by the Greek and Etruscans. The
dominant kind of buildings in Rome
were domes, aqueducts and arches. Lots
of these structures affected the modern
world. For example, the aqueducts that
were made in Rome helped the future
generations understand waterways and,
architecture itself. Lots of these types of
buildings were later on taken and
improved by the Renaissance in the 14th
to 17th century. The dome structure was
mostly used in churches; and triumphal
arches were an inspiration for the ‘Arc
de Triomphe’, which was a French
monument honoring the victories of
Napoleon.
AQUA
APPIA
By Amber Nguyen
Aqua Appia was the first aqueduct to be
built in the Roman Empire. Even though
aqueducts were made before by the
Greeks and previous empires, it still
benefitted the world; because the
Romans conquered many lands, and that
helped spread the knowledge to others
countries and it also gave a new start to
the world’s thinking of architecture.
This aqueduct carried fresh water for
about 16 km, and then entered the city
of Rome. Waterways like the Aqua
Appia are made with tough stone that
can keep the water in the course and
safely until it reaches its destination.
Places like this represent the ancient
architecture of the Roman Empire and
will help anyone understand more about
this topic.
ROMAN
ART
By Amber Nguyen
As the Roman Empire expanded, their
culture grew and influenced others as
well. Greco-roman art, a combination of
both the Greek and the Roman,
impacted on lots of modern art and
monuments. The Romans were famous
for their life-like statues which were
used later on as models for other famous
masterpieces. For instance, the statue of
George Washington resembles the statue
of Caesar Agustus. A thousand years
after Rome’s fall, during the
Renaissance period, many great artists
rose and produced great artworks from
the Greco-Roman art style. In particular,
Michelangelo work of the Sistine
Chapel ceilings.
HOW IS IT
ROMAN?
By Amber Nguyen
The Romans believed that gods created
humans and gave them talents. Lots of
their art were paintings of the
connection between the people and the
gods. The paintings carry messages of
worship to the gods like Jupiter, Venus
and Apollo. Some of these god statues
are still standing and well preserved
from the Roman time. Lots of their art
show that the Romans were heavily
engaged in warfare. There are artifacts
of bronze and metal material, and they
show that the Romans were very
wealthy. The patricians in the Roman
time had their homes filled with statues
and morals, making it look like a grand
art gallery. Art from different time
periods can tell us a lot about people’s
lifestyle.
