PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Friends,
Despite the weather feeling otherwise, fall is sneaking up on us. School is back in
session; most folks have returned from their summer forays; and even the
stores have begun putting out fall clothing and decorations. However, this
September I feel like we have a chance to just savor that summer sense a little
longer. With the High Holidays being a bit later this year, we actually have the
time to think about what we want for the coming year.
Personally, I know I want to really relish the final weeks of our Centennial year.
We planned and talked about this year‐long celebration for so long and now it is
just about over. It has been an extraordinary year; and I feel privileged to have
been president during this time. As part of our planning, we had a chance to
look back at our chapter and the women who played their parts in its history:
passionate, caring women who faced many of the same challenges we have
today and yet took the time to create and be part of something wonderful.
During those years, women got the right to vote, to advocate for civil rights, to
watch husbands and sons go to war; and still they had the optimism to believe
that they could make a difference for our Jewish community and the world at
large, as they witnessed the establishment of the State of Israel.
So, as we enter the final months of our Centennial Celebration, I invite each of
you to participate in making a little bit of history with Hadassah Greater Atlanta.
Be proud to be a part of such a strong, ever-evolving organization that, through
its commitment to “Research in Service to Humanity,” has seen breakthroughs
in ALS, breast cancer research, and so much more, making this world a better
place. Advocate for genetic equality in medical research, and find time to smile
and enjoy friends and family.
You will all soon be receiving your invitations to the culminating event of the
year of celebration – the Centennial Gala, on October 30. I do hope everyone
will be there. After all, we won’t have another centennial for 100 years!

100 YEARS OF HADASSAH ATLANTA:
CENTENNIAL GALA COMING SOON!
Hadassah Atlanta is gearing up for its Centennial Gala Celebration on Sunday, October 30, at the Grand Hyatt Atlanta
in Buckhead. The festivities will highlight how Hadassah is making an impact, not only in Atlanta but throughout the
world, with its groundbreaking medical research, by featuring Hadassah’s latest campaign, “Research in Service to
Humanity.”
The Gala’s three honorees represent Hadassah Atlanta’s past, present and future.
Rae Frank (z”l), represented by Lois and Larry Frank, was a devoted leader and mentor to generations.
Virginia Saul, a dedicated and dynamic past president, for decades has served and continues to serve Hadassah Atlanta.
Renée Rosenheck, an accomplished young Hadassah Leadership Fellow, inspires contemporaries by her involvement.
The evening will begin with a cocktail hour, followed by a kosher seated dinner. Guests will be entertained by the
dance troupe Ingrid’s La Fuega, featuring Cynthia Good, as well as music by Jeni Michelson. Fabulous door prizes will
be awarded from such greats as Neiman Marcus, Giorgio Armani Beauty/L’Oreal, Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem, Jewels
with a Purpose, Fifth Group Restaurants, Dr. Vincent N. Zubowicz, and many more. A photo booth from Button It Up,
the premier digital green screen photographer, will take guests to Israel, using backdrops of the Hadassah Medical
Center in Ein Karem.
Gala Co-Chairs Martha Jo Katz and Linda Hakerem, along with Centennial Chair Phyllis M. Cohen, are creating a truly
memorable evening to celebrate this 100-year milestone. No one will want to miss it!

CENTENNIAL LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE UPDATE
The Centennial Leadership Institute wraps up its inaugural cohort class with final sessions on September 18 and
November 6. Our leadership class members have felt inspired by HMO miracles in service to humanity, challenged by
Hadassah history, engaged as ambassadors, and delighted by meeting leaders beyond our Chapter. They are women
who DO great things. You will see the results of their work at the Breast Strokes Paint Day in the fall.

ONGOING ATLANTA CHAPTER PROGRAMS
GAH Study Group – Jews of the World
Hadassah Greater Atlanta’s Study Group has completed a study of Jews in most of the Muslim Lands; and we have
moved on to study the Jews of the World. We have many more countries to study and continue to meet on the
fourth Friday of the month (or sometimes the 3rd or 5th), from 10:30 AM-12:00 noon at the Hadassah HUB Office.
Our discussions are led by one of our members and are thought provoking and very lively. We also have great snacks
and schmoozing!
We met on Friday, August 26 and discussed the adaptation of the Ethiopian Jews who have settled in Israel during
and since the 1984 "Operation Moses" airlift of about 8000 and the 1991 "Operation Solomon" airlift of
14,000. There are now 3 generations, each with different successes and difficulties. Those who arrived as adults,
those who arrived as children and those who are sabras. We discussed the discrimination many have experienced
and reviewed some individual experiences based on interviews. We also noted Hadassah, HWZOA's current
partnering with Hadassah-Hebrew University Henrietta Szold School of Nursing and JobKatif, an Israeli nongovernmental organization, in Achotenu, a program which has provided Lapan Nursing Scholarships to 18 Ethiopian
men and women to begin a 4-year academic nursing program.
Our next meeting will be on Friday, October 28, from 10:30am-12pm at the GAH Hub Office. The history and the
current status of the Jews of the Republic of Georgia will be discussed. New participants are always welcome. If you

particular interest in the history of the Jewish people in a particular country.

Training Wheels: Al Galgalim
Come join us as we go around the year “al galgalim” (on wheels)
From Shabbat and Rosh Hashanah through the year to Shavuot, we’ll have fun
learning about the Jewish holidays!
Training Wheels/Al Galgalim, a Jewish family education program created by Hadassah, lets parents, grandparents and children
(ages 3-5) become partners in discovering the joys of being Jewish. The curriculum activities include songs, stories, crafts, games
and holiday foods, all of which enable adults and children to experience together the pleasures of celebrating Shabbat and the
Jewish holidays.
Training Wheels meets nine times throughout the year on Sunday mornings 10 am to noon and is led by trained Hadassah
volunteers. Give your family a precious gift of heritage that can last a lifetime! The program is about families – parents and
children – participating in Jewish rituals and spending quality time together. If you have friends you think might be interested in
Training Wheels, feel free to forward this information to them.
We are now accepting reservations for the 2016-17 year. There is no charge for the first session; but reservations are a must, as
space is limited.
Grandparents are invited to bring their grandchildren, or perhaps to give a membership in Training Wheels for parents to use
to take children to our sessions.

GROUP ACTIVITIES
Hadassah Greater Atlanta is comprised of many groups. Although the chapter sponsors a number of programs including the "Check It Out®” breast health awareness and education program for teens and the Marian F. Perling
Chesed Student Awards - most of our day-to-day activities are conducted at the group level.
Hadassah Greater Atlanta women, while members of the chapter, are generally affiliated with a group. Our groups
are roughly organized according to age and location, though all members are welcome at any Chapter or Group
meeting. No matter your preference, at least one of Hadassah Greater Atlanta’s groups is right for you.

Health Professionals
President: Ellen Sichel
The Health Professionals group has members who hail from all over metro Atlanta and range in age from 24 to 65
plus. Our members are affiliated with the health professions as nurses, physicians, pharmacists, audiologists,
speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, public health workers, radiology
technologists, social workers, electrologists, dental hygienists and professionals in other allied health fields. Our
programs are health oriented and timely with member or guest speakers sharing their expertise and experiences
on health issues of interest to our members.
Sunday, September 18 – IMPROVING THE HEALTH OF MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT: Mysticism: Numerology and Kabbalah. An
exciting and interactive program led by newest Health Professionals member Gloria Packer, numerologist and founder of the
newspaper Aquarius, along with Shirley Chambers, director of the Kabbalah Center, and other professionals. Find out why
numbers are so important in Judaism and how they impact our spiritual, mental and bodily health. Starting at 1 p.m. at the

Metulla members reside in Dunwoody, Roswell, Norcross, Alpharetta, Duluth, Cumming and Suwanee. Programs

Please remember that you can order JNF trees through Hadassah. Trees are now $18 each and may be ordered
through the Hadassah Greater Atlanta office by mail (with check payable to “Hadassah”) or by phone (470-482-6778)
with a credit card. Our office offers a generous price-break ($36 instead of $54) for a three-tree certificate.

Women’s Crisis Loan Fund
JIFLA (Jewish Interest Free Loan of Atlanta) recently launch its Women's Crisis Loan Fund. This Fund, supported in part by a
recent grant from the Jewish Women’s Fund of Atlanta will serve as a safety net for women facing financial obstacles as a result
of losing their independence and capacity to fulfill their potential as professionals, citizens and mothers. In many cases, women
who are newly divorced, have had family reversals or health issues or are single mothers often find themselves in a temporary
financially challenging situation and are particularly vulnerable. Nicole Wiesen, MSW, has joined JIFLA as a volunteer as
Community Resource Specialist. She is licensed as an LCSW in Florida and California and will focus on intake and consulting in
matters related to the Women’s Crisis Loan Fund. More details.
