Welcome
Welcome to your guide to all that’s in store at Chapter this
July. This month our Gallery welcomes a new exhibition. Thirteen
Blackbirds Look at a Man (p4–7) is a group show that takes us on
a stroll away from daily life and into an imaginative place that
draws on fairy tales and myth with a good dose of humour.
If you’re envious of all those people heading up to the
Edinburgh festival this summer, worry not, our stage is set for
previews of key shows that will be travelling from Wales. You can
enjoy a plethora of comedy — from Little Wander Comedy
Weekends (p14-15) from the people behind Machynlleth Comedy
Festival and Cardiff Comedy Festival (p17) to the wonderfully
interactive theatrical world of Flossy and Boo’s Curiosity Shop
(p16) — catch them all before they run off to Edinburgh!
Our cinema has a selection of great family films to entertain
the kids during the summer holidays, from Jurassic World (p31) to
the ever popular Minions (p31) and our education officer Matt will
be on hand with Film Activity Days too (p32–33).
It’s a busy month, and we wouldn’t have it any other way!

Thirteen Blackbirds Look at a Man

Exhibition: Sat 11 July — Sun 6 Sep
The artists in this exhibition seek out resonance and
allegiance through myth. Whatever the demands of
contemporary fashion, their work follows an
instinctive urge, to a place where the day-to-day
recedes and allows for the fruiting strangeness of
the imaginative realm.
We live in a complex world in which connectivity once seen as magical - can now be understood in
rational ways. And yet there is always a surplus, an
inexplicable knowledge: mythology supplies a
reservoir of elaboration on these ‘mysteries’. It is a
place where (an) allegorised, complicated series of
events can attempt to demystify the laws of nature

and the universe, whilst remaining fantastically
impervious to reason. It is a domain that embraces
contradiction and caprice and at times the cruelty
and drama of the stories is breathtaking.
These artists commit themselves, entering the space
of the instinctual with some urgency and a handful of
humour. Their works have a quality of unfolding to
reveal ideas of visual mysticism, neo-religious
feeling, or dark import. The characters may originally
have been sourced from real life, Bible stories, Greek
myths or German fairy tales, but all are forged and
formed by allegiance to a particular quality of ‘sacred
narrative’.

Cathie Pilkington creates pieces
from a vast array of materials,
adopting ready-made elements,
which are freely assembled, as
well as incorporating modelling,
carving, painting and other
finishes to her works.

Annie Whiles works with art as a
suspect activity. She is interested
in who magic belongs to, as a kind
of cultural lost property. Her work
refers to an emblematic language,
ceremonial, ritualistic and social
artefacts of affiliation in the form
of woodcarving, hand embroidery,
drawing and film.

Gallery
Sean Ashton is a liar based in
London. Recent lies include ‘Mr
Heggarty Goes Down’, a story
about an academic who uses his
body to test out his philosophy of
radical contingency; and ‘The
Portrait of Cary Grant’, a satire on
a collector of celebrity artworks. In
2007 he published a book of lies,
‘Sunsets and Dogshits’ (Alma
Books), a collection of reviews of
apocryphal artworks, books,
sporting events and other cultural
phenomena.
This exhibition is financially supported by the

of London, and The Centre for Culture and the
Arts at Leeds Beckett University. With thanks to

Our annual burger festival gets an American
makeover this year, as we’ll be combining the calorie
fest with some great beers from stateside. As always
we’ll be serving up delicious specials including
mozzarella stuffed, bacon wrapped beef burgers plus
veggie and vegan options.
To complement the burgers we’ll be doffing our
Stetson hats to the American brewing scene! An
expansive and eclectic brewing culture has emerged
in the USA over recent years and we will be
celebrating Independence Day with beers from Flying
Dog, Anchor Brewing, Left Hand Brewing Co.,
Founders and Brooklyn.
There’ll be live music on the Friday night and DJs on
the Saturday night. Keep an eye on social media and
our website for details.

producers selling scrumptious treats for you to take
home and enjoy. On the first Wednesday of every
month we host some of your old favourites and also
some new stallholders selling chocolates, jams,
speciality breads, Spanish products, Welsh cakes,
wine, gluten-free cakes, tea, honey and homeware.

‘Looking at this picture, it’s an everyday landscape,
nothing particularly striking. It’s 2013, I’m dancing
Rikuzentakata-ondo with Tomoko, Katsuko, Hikari ,
Abe-san and Sugawara-san, standing at the top of
Home For All in Takekoma. J-san takes a photo and
captures this moment in time.
Taking the eye beyond the dance, this is where
Rikuzentakata City stood, a home to all its residents,
the tsunami of 2011 washed away their homes,
a whole city in a matter of minutes; twenty thousand
lives were lost in the Tohoku region. Our media
transmits the news of devastation for only a few
days, there is no longer a strong image to broadcast;
have we already forgotten?
Without viewing from a distance, our arts and culture
slowly, step-by-step reduce our distance of
understanding, like the post man who delivers a
message to our doorstep. When space is taken away,
we realise its importance; dance is related to life and
living is felt.’

Larvae is the story of our external world, reflected
through internal thoughts, feelings, dreams and
memories which we experience throughout our lives.
This dance and movement piece focuses on the
internal changes reflecting our outward appearance,
to build a shape, structure, colour and pattern of the
human body.
Are we looking to or are we looking from? What can
we see as an individual and what can we see as a
group? How do we use that experience for our own
development and wellbeing? Our environment is our
reflection, what are we doing about that? Are we
limited in self–expression? Do we really need a frame
or structures? Are we really independent?
Larvae follows on from dance / movement showcase
M: Brio, which was presented in September 2014 at
the Riverfront Arts Centre, Newport. Larvae is the
second phase of Theatr Ffynnon’s project
Metamorfoza and based on the four stages of human
development.
LARVAE will be performed by nine members of Theatr Ffynnon.

Thousands of veterans’ minds are tormented by the things they witnessed and actions they performed in
the line of duty. Loss of limb is visible; mental pain is not — and so is more easily dismissed. Many try to
hide it because they feel ashamed and, as a consequence, their situation deteriorates. Their family
suffers. Marital breakdown is common. Suicide rates are high.
A heart-rending installation of talking heads, a compelling family saga and an exhilarating duet for two
male dancers. Together, they offer a shocking, darkly humorous and profoundly moving insight into the
significant consequences of taking up arms ‘for Queen and country’.

We’ve all lost something; glasses, keys, memories,
love, loved ones, our way... Are these things gone
forever or have they found a home elsewhere? Hidden
in Cardiff is a world of lost things. In the shadows,
behind closed doors, we await you.
Following a sold-out run in 2014, Hijinx and
Punchdrunk Enrichment reunite to present the sequel
to Beneath the Streets in a new location. This unique
theatrical experience, nominated for Best Production
in English at the Wales Theatre Awards 2015, features
a large cast of actors with and without disabilities.

A spoken word and jazz collaboration between the
Gareth Roberts Quintet and poet clare e. potter (who
lived in New Orleans for a decade).
This hybrid work will explore how spoken word, music
and silence intersect, allowing both performers and
audience to be immersed in what has washed up
from Hurricane Katrina, reflecting on culture, people
and place, loss and healing.
The event will also include a solo poetry set and
original Jazz performed by the award-winning
quintet.

Stand-up comedy from a clever boy. As heard on The

Character comedian Emma Sidi hurricanes through
some serious characters. Dance, words, voices and
grimaces make up this hilarious hour of desperation
and general avoidance of the abyss.

In October 2007 Ray Gravell, a man who for many
embodied what it is to be Welsh, passed away. He
was 56 years old.
Known to millions for his legendary exploits on the
rugby field, ‘Grav’ was and is so much more than that.
An actor, a cultural icon, a father, a husband, a man
with a life packed full of stories that deserve to be
heard once more.
The Torch Theatre Company presents Gareth Bale as
‘Grav’ in a play written by Owen Thomas that
celebrates the man and the legend. With the blessing
of Mari, Ray’s widow, and contributions from his
Welsh and British Lions team mates, this one man
show will explore the life of a man who was as
fascinating away from the rugby field as he was on it.
Directed by the Torch Theatre’s Artistic Director Peter
Doran, ‘Grav’ will remind the world once more of a
unique life well lived and of a man who did so much
more than eat soft centres.

Flossy and Boo have run away from the circus to set
up their very own travelling Curiosity Shop, traversing
the globe and collecting stories, songs and trinkets
for their little cart. See their amazing (and rather
unbelievable) tales! Hear the extraordinarily wellcrafted-and-never-at-all-silly songs! Behold the
extraordinary characters they have met along the
way! With live original music, physical theatre and
comedy, Flossy and Boo’s Curiosity Shop is an

Edinburgh Fringe!

Trespass carries on from where Mark’s previous show
100 Acts of Minor Dissent left off. It’s his usual odd
mix of theatre, stand up, a dash of journalism,
activism and a dollop of mayhem. No one knows
where this show is going to end up so join him on the
journey.

Phil Jerrod
Phil Jerrod began his stand-up career underneath an
Angus Steakhouse in 2012. Since then he has failed
his PhD, walked out of his job in publishing and been
entertaining audiences up and down the country with
his elegant rants on the often unfathomable
problems of modern life. Recently nominated for the
Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year Award 2014.

MC Clint Edwards
Clint Edwards is an award-winning stand-up who has
supported Rhod Gilbert on tour, written for numerous
television and radio shows, including Never Mind the
Buzzcocks, and is the current studio host for Dave
Gorman’s Modern Life is Goodish.
Bethan Roberts
Since turning her hand to stand up in 2012, Bethan
has enjoyed a number of successes, including being
crowned the winner of the What The Frock Newcomer
Award in 2013 as well as winning the Welsh Unsigned
Stand Up Award in 2014 and most recently being
crowned the Bath New Act Award winner earlier
this year.
Robin Morgan
One of the strongest acts to come out of the Wales
in years, Robin’s quick wit and natural charm,
coupled with a wicked streak have made
him a firm crowd favourite. An established comedy
writer for radio — including the News Quiz, the Now
Show, Newsjack, and numerous programmes for BBC
Radio Wales.

Charlie Baker’s instant likeability and charming
delivery style has earned him a reputation as
‘a superior take on the modern showman’
(The Guardian). He is a popular face on TV panel
shows having appeared as team captain on shows
including A Short History of Everything Else (Channel
4), two series of Never Mind the Buzzcocks (BBC2) and
Rob Brydon’s Christmas Special (BBC1).

Ted Shiress: I am not Sting
Wed 15 July 7.30pm
Ted Shiress is definitely not Sting. Or any other Rock
Star for that matter. Rock Stars get laid. Ted does not.
Expect him to rant and moan about this and other
frustrations for the Cardiff Comedy Festival.
Ted’s unique comic stylings will be complemented by
Dean Burnett — an ACTUAL Doctor of neuroscience
who moonlights as a comedy writer and stand-up
comedian.
The evening will also premiere a brand new episode
from Ted’s web-series Cynic. In which he plays
himself — and not Sting.

A computer virus has been created, so powerful it
could annihilate the World Wide Web. Judi Stench,
head of Mi69, calls on James Bondage for help, and
with the aid of his secretary, Miss Moneyshot, agent
Double D from the Thai Secret Service and the
brothers Brigyn (Welsh pop duo), Bondage has 60
minutes to find whoever’s responsible, and save the
web.
No Wê, is a new club show by BAFTA award winning
writer Barry ‘Archie’ Jones. It will tour Wales, before
closing in the Montgomeryshire and the Marches
National Eisteddfod this August.
Huw M is Welsh composer and performer Huw
Meredydd Roberts who is joined by Lucy Simmonds on
cello, Bethan Mai on vocals and accordion and Iolo
Whelan on drums and percussion. Together they play
a mix of original melodies and borrowed Welsh folk
songs, with influences from across the globe,
creating haunting, intelligent music.
Stuart Maconie on BBC 6 Music referred to Huw M’s
first single as a “Stunningly beautiful piece of music”.
His second album, Gathering Dusk, was short-listed
for the Welsh Music Prize.
For this gig at Chapter, Huw M presents songs from
his third album (to be released in the autumn) his first
on the wonderful I Ka Ching label. For this release,
Huw has been working with The Marshall Sisters from
Cardiff to blend early Gospel with Welsh Folk, and a
good dollop of poignancy, heartbreak and hiraeth.

father have been marked for pursuit and Silas aims to
cash in. A dreamy, violent debut from Beta Band
musician John MacLean, interspersed with incredible
performances and bleak humour.
Donato is a lifeguard in Brazil who saves German
tourist Konrad from drowning, but fails to save his
other friend. The intimacy of their shared experience
sparks a relationship and Donato leaves everything
behind, including his ailing mother and younger
brother, Ayrton, to travel back to Berlin with Konrad.
Once there his journey for love soon turns into a
deeper search for his own identity and, eight years
later, an unexpected visit from Ayrton brings all three
men back together as they struggle to reconcile the
pain of loss and longing. A touching examination of
lives lost and found.

year old orphan named Stet ends up at a choir
school. Completely out of his element, he finds
himself in a battle of wills with a demanding
choirmaster who recognizes a unique talent in this
young boy as he pushes him to discover his creative
heart and soul in music.

might fight back. This is a tightly wound thriller,
with Milland oozing suburban menace.
When the daughter of Simon Crawford, a successful
barrister, is killed in a hit and run accident and the
police are unable to find the culprit, Crawford swears
that he will find the driver and take revenge. However,
his fury sees him embroiled in a mystery where the
clues lead him closer to home than he ever expected.

Greene.

A loose group of West Coast musicians trained on movie scores
and jingles were asked by Brian Wilson to provide backing for Pet
Sounds due to their “spirit and know-how” and the wrecking
crew was born. Over the next decade the riffs, licks and
flourishes that became the iconic west coast sound was
provided by the band. Some wreckers like Glen Campbell and
Leon Russell became stars but many like the director’s father
Tommy Tedesco remained in obscurity, uncredited in best-selling
albums by Sonny and Cher, The Monkees, The Byrds and Simon
and Garfunkel. A fun and moving tribute to the men behind the
music, who rode the cultural wave.

Bassanio asks his friend, Venetian merchant Antonio,
to lend him money to finance his courting of Portia.
But since Antonio’s wealth is tied up in seafaring
business ventures, he borrows the cash from
moneylender Shylock. Thanks to simmering racial
tensions, there’s no love lost between the two men.
Shylock insists on a bond stipulating that if the debt
is not repaid by an agreed date, he will take a pound
of Antonio’s flesh. Then news arrives that Antonio’s
ships have been lost at sea.

Michael’s arrogance gets him caught up in a game of
cat and mouse with Christian, who is keen to exploit
his curiosity. Based on a real life situation with a
nuanced set of performances this is a fascinating
tale of hubris.

A five-day musical theatre extravaganza. This weeklong summer school for 8–12 year olds will explore
the world of Disney’s Frozen. Participants will learn
the songs, recreate the scenes, and develop new
and existing performance skills. So if you love Frozen
and you love acting, then this is the summer school
for you! Participants will be working towards an open
performance at the end of the week in Chapter’s main
Theatre space.
A packed lunch and an extra bottle of water will be required
each day.

Summer Animation Workshops for young people
on the Autistic Spectrum.
Mon 3 + Mon 10 + Mon 17 + Mon 20 Aug 10.30am,
12.30pm + 2.30pm each day
Due to the high demand and popularity of these
excellent hands-on, practical workshops for young
people on the autistic spectrum, we are running an
extra twelve workshops this summer. Places are
limited for each workshop and spaces will be
allocated on a first come first served basis. The
workshops offer each participant the opportunity to
embark on their own learning journey, whilst
developing new and existing skills in a supportive,
social environment. No experience of animation is
necessary, so if you’ve taken part in one of our tenweek courses before, or are looking to create an
animation for the first time we’d love to see you here!
£12 per session or £40 for 4 sessions (1 per week)
