administration.
Dear AISA Students, Parents, and Faculty,
It is with great appreciation, humility, and responsibility that I have
assumed the Head of School position at AISA. I come to this school with
past educational experiences in Texas, New York City, Colombia, and
Guatemala. My wife, Marisol, and I are thrilled to be here and we are
having a wonderful time getting to know the students, school, and country.
One of the reasons that Marisol and I decided to come to AISA was due
to the high level of community spirit and stakeholder engagement. Now that
I have been at the school for a few months, the feeling of community and
culture resonates stronger than ever. I am so pleased when I walk down the
hallways and observe the classrooms to see and hear students, teachers, and
parents collaborating and working together towards a common vision and
goal despite their different backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs.
The 2014-15 school year is a big transition year at AISA. In addition to
replacing Mrs. Amy, who has left AISA after 18 years of service to this
school, our Elementary Principal, Mrs. Deanna Emond, will be leaving the school after six years in Nigeria. As with any organization, the
collective spirit and whole are always bigger than any individual, but their losses have and will be felt for years to come. I am confident,
however, that the school will come out ahead in the end, as changes in leadership allow us to reflect, appreciate, and continue the strong
practices that our former leaders leave behind while at the same time offering an opportunity to further refine and perhaps redefine the
trajectory of certain initiatives.
As AISA heads into it’s next chapter of development, I want to make sure that our school is
staying true to it’s stated mission of academic excellence, critical thinking, self-esteem, social
responsibility, and respect for cultural diversity. During this critical transition year, we will be
working on developing new and refining existing structures to support our mission and will
look to engaging our community in order to move our school to the next level.

preschool.
a new perspective to be seen
Preschool is a wonderful time in a child's life.
The secret to the joy any visitor will witness and
experience when passing through the halls of
AISA's preschool is in the open hearts of the
students. Every single one of the students has a
huge amount of potential and is simply waiting
to break into school. The excitement and eager
smiles are seen and felt by everyone in the
school community. Each teacher lucky enough
to work with this population is eager, caring
and hopes to help each child suceed in
achieving their dreams. From exciting class
activities like story time, science, field days and
PE to class field trips will live on in the minds
and hearts of our preschool students for the rest
of their lives. Even though it's clear that these students
can and will go far in their lives, they would not be
where they are without the love and support of their
parents. It's hard to believe that they will soon leave
the fun and excitement of preschool for the even more
interesting and engaging world of prekindergarten.
The journey of every life has a starting point, and at
AISA, that starting point is in the colorful, vibrant
halls of our preschool. The students start their
educational journeys in a way that keeps them excited
and interested in school for the rest of their lives and
if they're lucky, they will continue the adventure right
here in Abuja at AISA. If not, however, and the
students leave for farther lands, AISA is sure to have
prepared them in the absolute best manner possible.

prekindergarten.
a whole new world to be seen
From show and tell to playing with blocks. The
pre-kindergarten world is full of adventure.
There's never a dull moment once you take a
step into either the pre-k red or blue classroom.
If colouring doesn't tickle your fancy, then
dressing up as your favorite super hero must do
the trick. Creativity, fun and a lively
atmosphere are just few ways pre-k red and blue
can be described. This year, the students
focused on learning how to read and write,
distinguishing shapes and colors,
understanding and articulating feelings, sharing
and caring, introductions to library visits and
the importance of literacy and much, much
more. Then, of course, there is ALWAYS recess!

kindergarten.
when seeing can be believing
Kindergarten introduces children to clue words
and continues to introduce and work with the
importance of cooperation, consideration,
courage, self-control and a super fun
curriculum. Each child is helped each day on
the road to first grade, both individually and in
group situations. One of the most wonderful
things about kindergarten is watching each
unique child grow more completely into who
they are, in everything from reading and
writing to basic geography, Nigerian Studies,
music and art. The creativity of the
kindergarten students is inspirational and they
have shared their projects and work with one
another, teachers and other classes.

first grade.
seeing the world in a new way
First grade is all about tremendous growth.
Students have left the soft, nurturing confines of
the Early Childhood section of AISA and have
ventured out, onto their own, into the big wide
world of elementary school. For students and
parents alike, it is a bittersweet time when
children begin to learn independence and selfsufficency, form unique and lasting friendships
with peers, and begin to navigate the waters of
self-awareness. The students take huge strides in
the areas of reading and writing, helped by
AISA's very own Reading Specialist. They
come into the class decoding small words and
leave composing essays, narratives and even
poetry. They enter counting by ones and leave
with a strong foundation in addition and subtraction
and even some new skills in algebra and geometry.
They are introduced to the scientific method and
begin the year by observing their teachers lead small
experiements. First graders are exposed to so much,
they have regular appointments with specialist
teachers in such subjects as PE, art and music. They
form a deeper understanding of Nigeria and its people
and even recieve lessons on forming their own
character from the school counselor. It is a wonderful
time in their lives. With all this learning going on,
however, it's important not to foget all of the times for
celebrations! From birthday parties to field trips to
national holidays, the first graders certainly know how
to make their classroom into a party!

2nd grade.
the spotlight is on
AISA's second grade is an energetic, enthusiastic and engaged
group that is eager to learn and above all, love to laugh and
have fun. In this grade, the students continue to incorporate
technology into their work, watching interactive videos like
BrainPop and enjoying the SmartBoards in the classrooms and
the interactive quizzes and games they provide. The students
love to cheer whenever they get a point or an answer right on
these. In fact, they love scoring points so mch that they help
each other with the answers, further illustrating what a
fantastically cooperative group they are.
The second graders also turn themselves into great scientists
in class by learning about different habitats, plants, wildlife,
environment and dinosaurs. They always ask questions and
carry out experiments. Also they love to use graphic organizers
to create stories and solve mathematical problems.
The display of fantastic attitudes towards learning have
shown the entire AISA community that the future will be
bright for this energetic group of second graders as they
prepare their way for third grade.
Second graders take their enthusiasm into every aspect of their
learning, from art classes, where they learn to draw and paint and
capture the world around them creatively, to PE, where they gain
their dose of exercise and learn all about the body and how to
keep it healthy and active, to music, where they discover various
ways to create songs and dance. In library, they further their love
of reading and enjoy moments where they can both read with one
another, and be read to by their beloved librarian. By this time,
students are able to choose their own age-appropriate books and
bring these home to incorporate reading into all aspects of their
lives. AISA helps to instill good habits of mind and soul that
students will carry forward with them for the rest of their lives. So
the next time you find yourself near the doors marked "2 Red"
and "2 Blue," you don't have to wonder anymore about why so
much laughter and joy emanates from those rooms. At AISA, our
second graders are crazy happy to be here, learning every day.

3rd grade.
uncovering clues everywhere, seeing is believing
This year's third graders have demonstrated
creativity and proved they are forward thinkers
by stepping out of their comfort zone to write
poems, act like pirates, make connections to
texts and themselves and the world and read for
understanding about various topics.
Throughout the year they have built a
foundation and applied critical thinking and
problem solving skills. Some highlights this year
have been creating power point presentations,
journal writing, visiting various areas around
town, and forming companies to manufacture
and sell.
Not only are third graders responsibile
citizens, but they are also highly creative. A few
examples of their creativity could be spotted when
students wrote poetry, created art in class, read,
discussed or wrote about creation myts, or
reproduced artwork from famous artists. Students
loved having the opportunity to turn on their creative
side.
As we near the end of the year, we look back and
reflect on the ways in which this marvelous group of
third graders have been able to unlock the mysteries
and sail through a year of learning and selfexploration. They have developed into well-rounded
individuals with the world at their feet. And,
consdering their awesome show at events such as
Sports Day, they are certainly a force to be reckoned
with!

senses sharpened, sights are set
Memorable moments from this year's fourth
grade classes include some fabulous birthday
parties, intense soccer matches during recess,
creating and presenting projects on family
history and several science experiements. We
also learned a great deal about women's history
and the Civil Rights movement in the United
States and how those relate to Nigeria and the
rest of the world. The students have embraced
this year with the enthusiasm and good nature
that teachers, assistants and specials alike have
grown to understand and envision this
particular group of students.
Whether while reading class novels, dancing
and singing in the various performances the
classes present, participating in Sports Day or having
a party, fourth grade is definitely a year to remember.
This year, students continued to grow and blossom
through PE classes, the library, after school clubs such
as Mad Science, Soccer, Swimming, Baking, Young
Designers, and Engineers club and all of the other
things AISA has to offer. Throughout all of these
events, fourth grade now has a chance to look back
and marvel at how they have been able to unlock the
mysteries of life in preparation for setting sail into
fifth grade. These students see where they are going,
their senses are sharpened and their sights are set on
the final year of elementary school, after which they
will leave the nest of their school forever for the big
time.

5th grade.
ready to be seen ... in middle school
By fifth grade, AISA students are eager to move
up and into the wide world of middle school.
Though they have a brief period of time in sixth
grade, where they are taken under the wing of
the Middle School Transition Coordinator, this
change is one of the most monumental and
sometimes frightening shifts of their lives.
However, for this particular group of students,
the only focus seems to be on the excitement of
being seen in middle school.
This year was packed with fun and
excitement for the students, from science lab
experiements to trips to the library to long
games during reccess and lunch. Students read
novels in class, both with teachers and during
Silent Sustained Reading, individually, performed
experiments, learned about history, math and
Nigerian Studies an danced and sang during Nigeria
Day. If there is one way to describe this group, it is
"excited." They are not frightened like so many
students during this phase of life, but rather, they are
ready and eager to move on to coursework at AISA
that includes Pre-AP coursework as students move
from basic elementary curriculum to begin the
journey towards a College Prep education.
Fifth grade teachers and assistants agree: there is
nothing to worry about with this group of kids as they
spread their wings and fly to the other end of campus,
or elsewhere, in their educational journey.

highschool superlatives.
To be an athlete, you must have
endurance, strength, energy, and
sportmanship. Tarik Popoola (12)
and Annissa Aamoun (9) have all
those qualities. With any sport,
they try their very best to perform
the task given. "Tarik plays every
sport except for swimming and he is
good at them. Annissa is good at
everything (basketball, soccer,
american football, volleyball, etc.)
They are both hardworking and
athletic."
The life of a party is someone

big impression that he's a
teacher's pet. Let us not be
haters and admit that we've all

One of the several opportunities that AISA boasts to participate
in communal sports is becoming a member of its resident swim
team. Coached by Mary-Lou, Ellen Johnston, and Caroline
Nielsen with a season runtime from October 3rd to November
2nd, AISA’s swim team practiced and perfected their skills to the
best of their abilities in order to participate in both WAISAL and
the home meet this year.
This year’s annual WAISAL tournament capped off three
weeks of hard work for AISA’s swimmers, an event that drew
students from a variety of schools to compete in Accra, Ghana.
Though AISA won mostly bronze medals, one distinguished
swimmer – Ekemini Ekarika – won a gold medal for her talented
backstroke.
The swim team also enjoyed a substantial number of
individual victories during the home meet in November, going
head-to-head with a variety of schools, including ICS, DSN,
Regent, and the French School. Every AISA swimmer managed
to get at least one silver medal, with a few lucky athletes winning
several more, commemorating the vast improvement the team
saw compared to their performance in the WAISAL tournament.
"Swimming tends to draw a motley mix, but especially
overachievers,” says sophomore swimmer Henry Eckrich, as
competitive swimming requires a variety of physical and mental
strengths, including endurance, self-discipline, and, most
importantly, focus.

swimming can start early, all the way from kindergarten on up. Part of the appeal is,

is, of course, the winning spirit that pervades all AISA students from the littlest

Both girls and boys soccer teams at AISA are at the top of the
game each year, and the 2014-2015 school year was no exception.
The highlights included the 2014 AISA Invitational Tournament in
which both the boys' and girls' teams played very well and took
that opportunity to prepare for the prestigious WAISAL
tournament which took place in Dakar, Senegal this year. During
the trip, students were able to visit various landmarks in the city,
play dozens of games with students hailing from all over West
Africa, visit local restaurants and try new things. The teams
enjoyed their time in Dakar as they played the sport they all love
and made tons of new friends. They all look forward to being a

play well and exhibit their skills but clinch the trophy.

Clothes, toys, musical instruments, books, and food were all donated in spades
this year, just like all others. Donations are made using orphanage boxes situated
around the campus, located in 3 parts of the school. Parents and students dig deep
to give to this worthy cause, and on top of this, student members go out to

Bake sales and multiple fundraisers to raise money are held throughout the school

NJHS members Maria Carrion, Lara Firetti, Vivica Ozueorah show their playful side
This prestigious society was
established in 1929 by the National
Association of Secondary School
Principals (NASSP). Their objective
for creating this organization for 7th,
8th, and 9th students was to
recognize and celebrate students’
academic achievements, while helping
them to develop other characteristics
essential to becoming good citizens of the world.
NJHS is founded on five important ideals and standards, which are:
Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Citizenship, and Character. Students
who get admitted into NJHS, after a rigorous screening and selection
process, are considered role models and are encouraged to remain so all
through life. The world needs selfless people who would go out of their way
to be of service to others, and this is what this society stands for. NJHS
goes beyond an honor role, it extends to stepping out to assuming
leadership, investing time, making sacrifices, rendering service, giving to
community, respecting people and the environment, caring for others, and
generally being a good citizen.
As NJHS AISA Chapter adviser, I have been working with the students
since 2013 and I have seen the positive effect that this society has on the
members over the years. Being a member of this leading educational
organization has great advantages. Members are honored and respected
everywhere they go. They have better chances of being admitted to other
schools or higher institutions. Their curriculum vitae looks better.
Membership in one chapter is accepted in any other chapter in the world.
Admission to NHS, which is the high school arm of the society, becomes
easier. I strongly recommend this society to all students who aspire to stand
out and make a difference in this decaying world.

Art at AISA this year has been busy and productive. Several new projects
at every level and constantly changing exhibitions in the lobby have
demonstrated student creativity. There have also been two exhibitions at the
UN headquarters. The highlights this term have been the linocut prints from
the African Themes class and the lovely boxes designed, built and decorated
by students in the Introductory class. The lizards made from found natural
materials by Gr. 6 students were effective. A school without vibrant arts
programs is only half alive. It's about more than right-brain activity. Art is life
affirming and helps provide a school with 'soul'. It also provides students with
balance in their education - no matter their tertiary choices.

all the flavor of AISA onstage
AISA is well known for the flavor of its talents, from
artistic abilities to the ability to utterly crush it on the
soccer fields or in volleyball. However, one area that
the school has truly distinguished its artistic
capabilities is in the arena of the stage. From
ingeneous costume design to completely unique and
gorgeous sets, the AISA community understands that
one area worth pulling together is that of theater. In
the 2014-2015 school year, the community presented
Alice in Wonderland, to packed audiences from all over
the city. As usual, this play did not fail to produce
thunderous applause all night long.

AISA's history.

A huge element of AISA’s well-earned reputation includes its belief in prioritizing
education at all costs, especially when less-than-favorable situations call for
flexibility. On August 22nd 2014, an unexpected outbreak of Ebola in Nigeria forced
the government to shut down all schools for weeks on end. For most other schools,
any and all academic proceedings would have ground to a halt. But with the help of
an online platform called Moodle, the teachers and staff members of AISA still
managed to actively communicate with the students working at home.
Karolina Zelvyte (12)
According to Moodle.org’s “About” page, “Moodle is a learning platform
designed to provide educators, administrators and learners with a single robust,
secure and integrated system to create personalized learning environments.” Until
school resumed on September 22nd, quasi-regular classes were carried out through
forums and chat rooms as well as via email and Turnitin.com. Overall, Moodle
proved a general advantage when it came to having some form of school in session,
but as helpful as it was during The Month of Darkness, it was not without its fair
share of critics.
An anonymous survey sent out to AISA students in October rapidly gathered a
slew of dismal responses. Complaints about the overall two-week experience of
Moodle ranged from the adverse effect it had on student productivity to the
Chris Esomo (12)
disorienting difficulty in teacher-student communication. “I wasn’t prepared for
online schooling… I felt like I was pretty much struggling to teach myself,”
complained one nameless contributor, while another conceded that “I was more
productive at home, but Math and Chemistry were hopeless.”
IT director Paul Ericksen seemed impartial, if not highly aware of how laborious
it was to virtually support the entire school for weeks on end. “That first Friday on
Moodle was probably the most stressful day I’d ever had here,” he admitted. “After
that, though, everything was just fine.”
Just as school continued after the Ebola scare in the flesh, Moodle continues to be
an active tool both used in the classroom and at home. Many may dispute its
usefulness, but few can deny the essential role it plays in keeping everyone in touch. Temi Alabi (11)

Sports day held the hisses of the Black Mambas, the whistles of the Blue

teams showed off their beautiful posters and super dance moves as they
enthusiastically performed cheers in the Multi-Purpose Hall before kicking
off the real competition on the field. The middle and high school students
were separated as they went through a set of different rigorous activities
which included the exciting water tower, three-way soccer that featured
participants from each team, dodge ball, short and long distance races and
the highly anticipated tug-of-war. Points were given on the basis of

AISA students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds,
political viewpoints, and miscellaneous walks of life. The
one thing that unites us all is the reality of life coming with
a unique set of challenges and opportunities that we must
face as we learn and grow. This is how AISA students face
all the little minutae making up the grand “it” of life.
