Life on campus
From our biggest campus in Mt Albert
to the Northern campus in Albany,
Unitec’s three campuses are all quite
different. The Mt Albert campus is green
and spacious, with lots of carparking,
sports facilities and cafes to catch up
with friends. It’s just 10 minutes drive
to the city, and a short walk to the
nearest bus stop and train station.
Out west, there’s Waitakere with its
modern teaching facilities, right at the
heart of Henderson. Our Northern campus
in Albany is easy to reach from all parts
of the North Shore and the northwest.
All our campuses are 100% smokefree and
they’re constantly buzzing with students
of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds.
There’s always something going on
too – from social events on campus to
action-packed trips out of Auckland
with the Experience NZ programme.
The year starts with the biggest
student orientation event in the
country and finishes with the massive
End of Year Party, with concerts,
film nights, gaming events, sporting
events, BBQs, parties, comedy nights
and Kids’ Days Out in between.
You can join one of the many clubs or
societies at Unitec or even start your own
one. And if you’re after some culture, there
are regular plays and dance performances
by performing arts students, as well
as design and visual arts exhibitions
at the Mt Albert campus galleries.

Welcome to New Zealand (Aotearoa)
A beautiful piece of paradise in the
South Pacific, New Zealand is a country
of contrasts. From tropical forests to
white sand beaches and towering
mountains to bubbling hot springs, the
scenery is spectacular. Then there are
New Zealand’s modern and vibrant cities
bursting with world-class restaurants,
galleries, theatres and museums.
You can ski, sail, hike, sky dive and
mountain bike your way around the
country. Or simply enjoy the relaxed
lifestyle and clean air that Kiwis take
for granted.
New Zealand is repeatedly voted one
of the world’s most peaceful countries
according to the Global Peace Index.
With a population of 4.5 million people,
New Zealand is really diverse. . The
indigenous Māori people were the first
inhabitants of Aotearoa and today
New Zealanders come from all over
the world, including the Pacific Islands,
Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe.
KIWI SPEAK
New Zealand welcomes everyone,
practises all forms of religion, and enjoys
political debate and freedom of speech.
New Zealand was the first country
in the world to give women the vote
and we are proud to be nuclear free!
SWEET AS – YES, THAT’S GOOD
GIDDAY – HELLO
JANDALS – FLIP FLOPS
DAIRY – CORNER STORE
KCHOICE/AWESOME – GREAT!
IA ORA – HELLO/GREETINGS
RANCHSLIDER – PATIO DOOR
SNEAKERS – TRAINERS
TU MEKE – TOO MUCH!
FOOTPATH – SIDEWALK
MOTORWAY – FREEWAY
LOLLIES – SWEETS, CANDY
NO WORRIES – THAT’S FINE
YEH YEH NAH YEH –YES!
Living in Auckland (Tamaki Makau Rau)
The Māori name for Auckland is Tamaki
Makau Rau, which means ‘city of
many lovers’. And it’s true – we love
Auckland and we’re sure you will too!
Some Auckland facts
Auckland is New Zealand’s biggest city –
around one third of the population lives
here, about 1.4 million people. It’s also
the largest Polynesian city in the world.
According to Mercer Quality of Living
survey, Auckland is currently ranked as
the third best city to live in the world!

Unitec offers two general foundation programmes. Each
programme covers a wide range of subjects to give you plenty of
options for what to study next. The courses you pick can pathway
you towards all sorts of different careers. Flexibility is really
important, which is why we offer programmes at different levels.
You’ll be in a class with people at the same level as you, who have
similar study and career goals. They’ll support you to develop
the study skills, confidence and technical knowledge you need
to return to education and improve your career opportunities.
First we’ll sit down with you and find out exactly what you
want to achieve. Then we’ll work with you to select courses
for a pathway that gets you on track for the future you want.

Bachelor of Applied Technology (Marine)
It was very important to me to learn from
people with differing opinions, from people
who had travelled and were from different
parts of the world and this is one of the many
reasons I chose to study marine technology at
Unitec. Since being at Unitec, I have become
totally independent and love to socialise
and meet new people every day on and off
campus. So far this has been the best
experience of my life.

with their tutors, Unitec has definitely
delivered and met my expectations. My
tutors have been remarkable, I have been
able to succeed in ever paper and have
made many dear friends. I have taken this
opportunity to immerse myself into the
kiwi lifestyle and in doing so have seen
and done some pretty memorable things.

Construction and Civil Engineering
31
In New Zealand and throughout the world, qualified construction
managers and skilled technical engineers who can plan, cost,
organise and manage construction and engineering contracts
are in great demand. They also need to be able to work together
on big projects like harbours, motorways, bridges, residential
complexes, and public and commercial buildings. Our construction
and civil engineering programmes are designed to meet this
demand, preparing our graduates for “big picture” roles with
high levels of responsibility and equally high earning potential.
When you graduate from Unitec, you will be well-equipped for
such a role – a fact that is recognised throughout the industry.
Start with a programme that suits your qualifications and/or experience, then progress to a level that achieves your goals.

When I arrived at Unitec, I didn’t have much
time to feel lost. Everybody on campus from
staff to students is very friendly and helpful.
The first weeks of studying at Unitec offered
many great events during the breaks or
in the afternoons and evenings. I enjoy
learning from so many different points of
view. Talking to different students and
tutors gives me new approaches that I
had never thought about.

GRADUATE
Ashley Grey
Medical Radiation Technologist, Counties Manukau District Health Board, Radiology Department
Bachelor of Health Science (Medical Imaging) “I originally wanted to be a dancer, but injuries
prevented this. The many x-rays, MRI scans, nuclear
medicine scans and ultrasound scans I had along the
way unlocked a new interest in radiology. The medical
imaging programme at Unitec is a mixture of theory and
practice. It’s hard work – you often spend your holidays
in clinical placements - but the small classes allow you
to build strong relationships with your classmates and
tutors. A proud moment for me was receiving the Unitec
Senior Scholar Award at graduation, which shows
that hard work does pay off! My qualification is 100%
relevant to my job now. Having a clinical placement at
Middlemore Hospital really helped me as I was exposed
to working life as a radiographer from day one. I love that
no day is ever the same. Radiation technologists work
all over the hospital (general, emergency, superclinic,
theatre, screening), and I really enjoy this fast-paced
environment. I don’t know yet where my future will
take me but there are so many opportunities with a
medical imaging degree. I could do postgraduate study in
mammography, ultrasound, MRI or nuclear medicine, or I
could even travel abroad with my degree.”

I chose Unitec because of the hands on nature
of the programme. I felt I would get more out
of my education through a practical approach
combined with a theoretical one. I have learned
so much more than I thought I would in my

(some programmes require work experience and applications
for these will not be assessed until the references are

prospectus or on Unitec website for more details)
Statement of Purpose FAQs
Who can write my SOP?
SOPs must be written by the student applying for the
programme.
Can I copy the SOP or ask someone
else to write it for me?
No - it is very important that you write your own
statement. Do not ask a friend, agent, or family member
to do it for you, and please do not copy paragraphs from
Unitec or other websites. We want to know why you
want to study with us, and only you can tell us this.
Why do I have to write an SOP?
Mainly to help Unitec understand why you are applying
for the programme you selected, and whether it is
likely to meet your needs. The SOP does not affect
whether you meet the general entry requirements.
What do I need to include in my SOP?
» Your name (and your Unitec ID number if you have it)
» The Unitec programme you want to study (we
cannot proceed if your SOP is about another
institution or a programme we do not offer)
» Your motivation for applying – in other words,
› what interests you about this programme or area of study?
› what do you hope to get out of your study?
» Some thoughts about your future plans - you could tell
us about
› further study you might be planning to do
after completing this programme
› whether you want to work in NZ (or in
another country) afterwards
› what kind of work you think you might like to do
Is there anything I should NOT put in my SOP?
Please do NOT include the following:
» Paragraphs or lists of courses from Unitec’s
website (or other websites promoting NZ)
» Paragraphs copied from SOPs other students have written
» You can mention your work experience if relevant,
but full details should go on your CV or resumé
How long does my SOP need to be?
One page(about 3-4 paragraphs) is enough, if you give us
the information we are asking for in these guidelines.

Cross-credits awarded do not usually exceed 50% of the Unitec programme, and may be less.

formally advised of the Programme Committee’s decision in writing. Cross-credits are only applicable to the
