Dear Friends of Olbrich Gardens,
We are happy to report that Olbrich Botanical Society (OBS) met its budgetary goals in 2013
and want to thank everyone involved in helping us reach those goals.
In 2013, in partnership with the City of Madison Parks Division, HGA Architects, Engineers, &
Planners completed a study of Olbrich Botanical Gardens’ facilities (http://www.olbrich.org/
about/expansionproject.cfm). Many of you participated in 5 public meetings and provided
input to the planners. Thanks very much for your input and ongoing support.
We hope you enjoy this annual report. We are including selections from the Young Writers
Camp, held for the first time at the Gardens during the summer of 2013, and some wonderful
comments from visitors.

• Media Partners: In 2013, Olbrich received $87,932 in donated advertising and promotion –
promoting both special events and garden visits.
• Olbrich participated in: National Public Gardens Day, Wisconsin Museums Week, Smithsonian
Museum Day Live, Travel Green Wisconsin, Madison Museums Collaboration, Wisconsin Science
Festival, NatureNet, Wisconsin Science Alliance, and Wisconsin Invasive Species Council
“Invader Crusader” awards ceremony.
• 620 people attended the Madison Public Library’s summer reading program end-of-season family
celebration at Olbrich on August 6. The OBS Education Department facilitated a hands-on seed
planting activity as part of the event.
• Olbrich is proud of its volunteers! With 25,883 hours by 602 volunteers, and an 88% retention
rate, Olbrich had a remarkably successful 2013 volunteer program! These overall volunteer rates
are practically identical to the previous year’s volunteer rates. 329 Olbrich volunteers contributed
more than 25 hours in 2013. 23 Olbrich volunteers contributed more than 2,000 hours during
their volunteer careers. Olbrich’s volunteer program is VERY stable. This allows staff to depend
on volunteers to get needed work done. While there are changes in jobs, changes in schedules,
and changes in abilities, the volunteer program delivers the assistance Olbrich needs every day.

Olbrich Botanical Society and the City of Madison Parks Division
partner in the operation of Olbrich Botanical Gardens. In 2013, the
City of Madison spent $1,526,768 in operating expenses for Olbrich
Botanical Gardens which was offset by $259,487 in revenue, resulting
in a net expenditure of $1,267,282. In addition, the City of Madison
Parks Division funds capital maintenance for Olbrich Botanical Gardens.
In 2013, the 1991 Garden Center Building received a brand new roof
at a cost of $1,133,966, as well as a public restroom addition that
provides fully-accessible facilities for a cost of $298,521.

People in the Gardens
Olbrich counted 250,701 visitors in 2013, who entered between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm or
participated in events. Visitors who take advantage of evening hours between April and October are in
addition to this number.
• Rhapsody in Bloom 2013: Guests enjoyed the Kentucky
Derby theme, ‘Run for the Roses’, at Olbrich’s annual
garden gala. The community was generous with 36
business and individual sponsor tables! Thanks to the
Rhapsody in Bloom committee members who secured most
of the auction and raffle items. Revenue was higher than
ever!

• The Children of the Rainforest program celebrates the cultures of rainforest regions around
the world while educating visitors about the connection between plants and people.
With support from Children of the Rainforest sponsor William Wartmann, Olbrich was pleased to
offer various community groups free admission to this program and 85 individuals were able to
attend through those partnerships. The 2013 season featured performances by Ballet Folklorico
Mexico of Milwaukee and Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago.

Teaching About Plants and Gardens
• 463 adults and 39 children enjoyed free Outdoor Garden Strolls during the summer.
• 2,106 local and regional students participated in the K-5 Explorer School Programs.
• In collaboration with the Madison School Community & Recreation (MSCR), approximately 150
grades 1-3 students from 6 MSCR sites participated in the Children’s Kitchen Garden School
Program.
• Youth & Family Classes: 80 classes (for ages 2 – grade 12) were offered; 956 people registered
for these classes.
• Adult Classes: 125 classes were offered; 2,472 adults registered for these classes.
• Sunday Herb Garden Docents – On Sunday afternoons during the summer, 10 Madison Herb
Society members partnered with Olbrich’s volunteers to welcome, engage, and delight visitors
as they experienced the Herb Garden. This education commitment by the Madison Herb Society
continues a 31-year partnership with Olbrich.
• Olbrich participated in the WI Science Festival 2013: Curiosity Unleashed, September 26-29,
2013. Olbrich facilitated What is a Rainforest? family program and offered docent-guided outdoor
and conservatory garden strolls.
• As part of Olbrich’s membership benefits package, we started giving members “first notice” of
classes before the general public. Approximately one week prior to public distribution of class
information and availability to start registering, we sent an email notice to members and gave
them access to online class registration.

Schumacher Library
Olbrich’s Schumacher Library staff and volunteers hosted 4,817 library users and
answered 2,070 garden and gardening questions. In addition, Olbrich’s library staff
started a free book discussion group for readers to come together to discuss books
about plants, gardens, nature, and the environment. In 2013, the library discussed
Second Nature: A Gardener’s Education by Michael Pollan and The Brother’s
Gardener by Andrea Wulf.

Bolz Conservatory Exhibit
Plants of the Dinosaur Age
November 2, 2013 – March 2, 2014
What would plant-eating dinosaurs have eaten
when they roamed the earth 225 to 65 million
years ago? Their plant diet was very diverse
and many of the plant species they consumed
during the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous
Periods in which they lived are still alive today.
Some of these plant species have evolved over
time, while others have changed very little since
the days they coexisted with the dinosaurs.
Visitors discovered these Mesozoic Era plants
and saw plant species up close in the Bolz
Conservatory, including figs, breadfruit,
ferns, palms, and cycads during this exhibit.
They learned about some of the plant-eating
dinosaurs that roamed the Earth millions of
years ago. In addition, Olbrich Education
developed and facilitated related adult and
family classes.

Greater Madison Writing Project
• Olbrich hosted the Greater Madison Writing Project’s (GMWP) Summer Teacher Institute,
which immersed the participants in the outdoor gardens, writing, reading, and teacher-inquiry
workshops to help them incorporate writing throughout all academic content areas and to be
teacher-leaders for cross-curricular writing in their schools.
• In collaboration with the Greater Madison Writing Project, Olbrich Gardens co-hosted the first
annual Young Writers Summer Camp for grades 3-8 from August 5-8, 2013. Using Olbrich’s
gardens and conservatory as inspiration for writing, the young writers met each day in writing
groups led by experienced writers and teachers to improve their writing skills and to produce a
finished piece of original work that was published in an anthology.

2013 Interns
Olbrich Botanical Society employed 12 Interns in 2013 in the following departments:
Horticulture (outdoor gardens), Conservatory (indoor gardens), Education, and Special Events.
Olbrich’s Special Event Intern, Kara Gugel, assisted with the following events:
Rhapsody in Bloom, An Outdoor Garden Gala
Over 500 guests annually attend this fundraising event, which plays a key role in the Olbrich Botanical
Society’s effort to raise over $1 million each year to help operate the Gardens.
This year guests enjoyed, ‘Run for the Roses’, a Kentucky Derby theme. The Special Events Intern assisted
with event preparation, execution, volunteer management, guest check-in, and event dismantle.
Olbrich’s Home Garden Tour
This annual fundrasing event showcases private home gardens in the Madison area and consistently
draws 800-1,000 attendees. The event supports Olbrich’s educational mission to inspire and teach
homeowners a variety of gardening practices.
The Special Events Intern assisted in event preparation, execution, and event dismantle, along with
training and managing volunteers at the home garden sites.
Olbrich’s Blooming Butterflies Event
Based on mission-related educational principles, excellent execution, a fascinating topic, healthy net
proceeds, and outstanding community support, Olbrich’s Blooming Butterflies averages 25,000 annual
attendees for this 26-day event. Visitors include families of all ages, day cares, summer camps, bus tours,
and school, senior, and church groups.
The Special Events Intern assisted in event preparation and daily execution, and she collaborated with
the Conservatory and Education staff and interns to help manage the event.
Conservatory/Greenhouse Intern, Alyssa Studer:
The Conservatory/Greenhouse Intern worked directly with staff in the conservatory and greenhouses
to gain valuable practical work experience in plant maintenance. She participated in all aspects of
environmentally responsible horticulture and sustainable practices during the course of the internship and
was immersed in innovative conservatory and production greenhouse maintenance practices.

Education Interns, Brienne Tingley and Marie Norris:
The Education Interns worked together to implement the summer Children’s Kitchen Garden
Program for families and school groups. The Education Interns were responsible for providing
high-quality learning experiences using curriculum provided by Olbrich Botanical Gardens. The
Interns oversaw the day-to-day function of the Children’s Kitchen Garden programs by providing
direct instruction to children ages 2-10 years of age.
Horticulture (Outdoor Gardens) Interns, Kate Berry, Michael Dziennik, Diannelle Erot, Ida Paige,
Sarah Thomson, Rinnie Rodenius, Maria Jonietz, and Rachael Witt:
Horticulture Interns worked in every square inch of the display gardens and learned from all of
Olbrich’s expert horticulture staff. They gained valuable, practical experience working with every
type of plant from annuals and aquatics to vines and trees, as well as learning to use equipment
and tools and work with and supervise dedicated volunteers. One intern, Kate Berry, also assisted
one-half time with the Children’s Kitchen Garden to make sure that it was maintained to Olbrich
standards. This year all of the interns had the opportunity to work in the City of Madison Parks
with the Beautification Project, as well as planting and caring for the planters on Madison’s
bustling State Street. (The Madison Parks experience was budgeted separately from the Olbrich
Gardens experience.)
