Christmas Carroling
at The C
LOSET
and for our N
eighbors
Let’s put our prayer, “Thy Kingdom come, thy
will be done” into action this Christmas season!
On Sunday, December 11th at 5:30 PM for
an evening of caroling to our neighbors. We
will be inviting those neighbors closest to the
church to participate with us in being ONE
(On Earth) this Christmas! As we sing, we will
be collecting nonperishable food to donate to
WFCM (Western Fairfax Community Ministries).
At the same time a second team will travel
to The Closet, which is opening just for this
occasion from 4-6 PM, for caroling and to
deliver Christmas cookies. When we’re done,
we’ll return to the church for Christmas cookies,
warm apple cider, and hot chocolate!

Operation Christmas Child
Dave & Donna Carlo and Andy & Evette Ross thank everyone who helped with
Operation Christmas Child this year. For all who donated monetarily, packed a shoebox,
put cartons together, packed cartons, wrapped shoe boxes, helped hand out or collect shoe
boxes at Chick Fil-A, bought or prepared dinner, baked goodies, helped cleanup, offered
encouragement, or prayed, your efforts were deeply appreciated and contributed to an
exceptional year. We spread God's word to needy children throughout the globe.
Our church collected 2826 boxes. Those boxes were packed into 168 cartons for an average
of 15 shoe boxes per carton. The efficient packing is important because initially, we can rent
less truck space to transport the boxes to Charlotte and finally, the sea containers that take the shoeboxes to all corners of the
Earth have a finite limit to the numbers of cartons that will fit inside. The more shoeboxes per carton, the more children that
our gifts will touch.
We have not yet received the total shoe boxes for our area (NOVA/DC). Early reports are that all Relay Centers reported
higher numbers this year. We will publish the final number when we receive it.
Remember, each shoe box touches not only the child that receives it, but it also touches that child's family and their entire
community. It not only provides the missionaries an opportunity to show the bounty of Jesus, but it gives each family a
pathway into the church. Those little boxes open doors to education and better health. This is one of the few times that
allows us to have our reach truly exceed our grasp.
7
We will be collecting appropriate gifts throughout the year as items like soap, wash cloths, pencils, crayons, pads of paper,
socks, small stuffed toys, and medium sized toothpaste go on sale and become more affordable. It stretches our dollars and
increases our shared bounty. You can buy those proper gifts over the course of the year to have them ready to pack in the
boxes we send out next year. Just remember these items have to fit into a shoe box along with the other basic items.
Please start saving those shoe boxes for next year. If storing them is a problem, just give them to us. We will hold them until
Collection Week in 2012.
We welcome anyone who wants to learn and participate in this year round endeavor.
God Bless all of you!

Kairos Ministry
caring for our college students
Two care packages have gone out to our 31 college students this school year, one
in the fall and one for Christmas. We ask that you keep our college students in your
prayers as finals are approaching and the pressure to get things turned in and pass
tests can be enormous.
If you see our college students home over Christmas, please make sure to ask them
about their semester. We also ask for special prayers for Kathryn Shaw who will be
having her tonsils removed on Dec. 20. We wish her a speedy recovery and lots of
slurpies or smoothies.
If your college student is not receiving a care package, please notify Benita at
[email protected] so we can add him or her to our list. If you are a college
student reading this newsletter, hang in there and please know that we care. We look
forward to seeing you when you are home for Christmas.

How You Can Help
Many thanks to Sarah, Pat, Betty, Beth,
The Closet is asking for
Richard, Kathy, Chris, Linda, Olivia,
volunteers from all the
congregations during the holiday
Jane, Barbara, Andrea, and Kaitlyn,
season to perform the following
who volunteered in November.
“extra” tasks:
• Label clothing before it is put
out in the store. Labelers are welcome 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Monday through Saturday,
starting November 28. No advance sign-up is required. Work as long as you want,
whenever you want.
• Staff the sales floor for a special sales events for a local business on Wednesday,
December 7 and Friday, December 9. Shifts are 9-noon, noon-3 and 3-6. Volunteers
on the early and late shift would help with re-stocking, merchandising, etc. in the hour
before and after shoppers are in the store. If you are interested, either let me know
your preferred hours/days or Email this information and your contact information to the
Closet’s President, Laura Greenspan, at [email protected].
• Staff the sales floor when the Closet is open for DUMC’s Caroling on Sunday,
December. 11 from 4-6 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering on the sales floor, (not
as a caroler), let me know or Email the Closet’s manger, Aaron Sawyer, at theclosetinc@
verizon.net and cc Laura at [email protected].
In addition to caroling, cookies, and photos with Santa on December 11, shoppers, staff and
volunteers can donate new gloves, hats, scarves, ear muffs and socks to the Embry Rucker
homeless shelter.
Thank you again for supporting this important mission. The Closet’s success is dependent on
dedicated volunteers like you.

Adult Sunday School
NEWS FROM THE GLEANERS
In November, the Gleaners Adult Sunday School will begin a
John Stott study entitled The Radical Disciple-some Neglected
Aspects of Our Calling. Led by Mark Sullenberger, we will look
at 8 ways Christians too often tend to conform to the patterns
of society rather than demonstrate the distinctiveness that Jesus
asks of us.
If you would like to join our lively group, we meet in the library during the
Sunday School hour. If you would like a copy of the book it may be purchased
at www.cbd.com for $8.99.

Affair at dranesville 20 Dec 1861
N
By mid-December 1861, nearly 5 months of
relative quiet had passed in northern Virginia
since the Union defeat at First Bull Run in
V illage of
July. Except for the Federal disaster at Ball’s

Bluff in October, no significant engagement

The Federals, under Maj. Gen. George B.
McClellan, a superb organizer, drilled daily
in their camps on the Virginia Hills opposite
Washington, D.C. 25 miles to the west at
Centreville, Gen. Joseph E. Johnston’s
Confederates also trained.
With the approach of winter, both
McClellan and Johnston wrestled with
logistical problems. Food and rations for the
men and forage for the thousands of horses

and mules were a constant need. 5 days

before Christmas, both armies sent foraging
Based on map accompanying Brig Gen. Ord’s report on the battle
parties for hay. Both sides selected the same
area-the lush farmland west of Dranesville,
a town about midway between Alexandria and Leesburg on the Leesburg Turnpike.
At daylight on December 20, the Confederates foraging party, composed of virtually every wagon in Johnston’s army
rolled out of Centreville, 16 miles south of Dranesville. Brig. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart, with 150 cavalryman, 4 infantry regiments,
and an artillery battery, accompanied the wagons as an escort. Almost simultaneously Brig. Gen. E.O.C. Ord left Camp
Pierpont with 5 Pennsylvania infantry regiments, a battery of four cannon, and a squadron of cavalry. Ord had been ordered
to capture Southern marauders and confiscate forage from loyal Confederates.

Having only 12 miles to cover, the Federals entered Dranesville
first, about noon. Scattering a few Confederate horsemen, the Union
troops occupied the town. An hour later the 1st Pennsylvania Reserve
Rifles spotted Stuart’s approaching force to the south. Lt. Col. Thomas
L. Kane, commander of the Rifles, knew the terrain and quickly moved
his regiment to a hill near the intersection of the Leesburg Pike and
the Georgetown road. Kane deployed his soldiers while informing Ord
of the oncoming Confederates. Stuart’s approaching troopers soon
exchanged fire with the Pennsylvanians.
Ord and Stuart, both uncertain about the situation, hurried
their trailing regiments forward. The Union brigadier deployed 3
regiments on the right of Kane, south of the turnpike, keeping the 10th
Pennsylvania and the cavalry squadron north of the road. The Federal
battery unlimbered beside the 10th, soon sending its shells toward the
deploying Southerners. Stuart meanwhile, aligned his 4 regiments in
the woodlands opposite the 4 Pennsylvania regiments. His artillery
unit halted behind the infantry and replied to Ord’s gunners.
The infantry action began when the 9th Pennsylvania accidentally
stumbled into the 1st Kentucky, who had already mistakenly exchanged
volleys with the 6th South Carolina. Stuart then attacked with the 11th
Virginia and 10th Alabama. The Confederates cleared the woods
and drove toward Kane’s soldiers, many of whom occupied a 2-story
brick house. A 30-minute fire fight ensued, with the Confederates,
suffering more. Stuart then shifted the 11th Virginia to the right, but
the regiment passed across the front of a concealed company of the
10th Pennsylvania, whose slicing volley staggered the Virginians,
sending them back into the woods.
Stuart, with his attack repulsed and certain the wagons were
safe, ordered a withdrawal about 3 o’clock. Masked by the smoke
and woods, the Confederates extricated themselves without additional loss. Stuart 194 casualties; Ord lost only 68. The next
day both commanders returned to their camps.
